Update to KitKat or Not? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After seeing many different comments. I wanted to get a general idea on whether to update LG G2 to 4.4.2 Kitkat or stay with the 4.2.2 JellyBean version?
I mostly think about the OFFICIAL Kitkat release, NON-ROOTED.
I have seen people talking about battery and bluetooth battery drain problems on the new update... So which one is better?
Thanks.

Got better for me when I updated, and or was pretty dang good before

For me is KK better and faster yes have some problems with battery drain and bluetooth but if you flash any custom rom you resolve this problem i use custom rom and custom kernel and i not have this problem and i not use bluetooth everyday so my battery is pretty good so update to KK and be happy

Kitkat it is. It is the most updated and it is there for a reason: to fix Jelly bean's flaws. :fingers-crossed:

If you HAVE ROOT or NOT HAVE anyway update to Kitkat because is better

Oh no. One of the reasons why i ditched my nexus 4 for lg g2 is because nexus 4 had bluetooth connection issues with my car. Looks like it has to do with google 4.3 and 4.4+ roms no matter what phone you have. I have heard only sense and touchwiz didnt have this issue in KK. As i drive a lot, i need this feature. Looks like 4.4.3 fixes bluetooth - hope we get it for lg g2.
Other than that only things you will loose going to KK is
flash wont work with stock browser even if you use hacked flash player - works with dolphin+jetpack though.
stock browser inverted rendering wont work - dolphin night mode is great though.
Battery drain difference between the versions are minimal. I tried both in my nexus 4. If you experience a drain, it might be due to play services. some versions keep the location services running even if you turn off the location. I use appops to turn it off and i get good battery in KK.
What kind of issue you have with bluetooth? Not connecting? or not auto connecting with paired devices?
Edit: Bluetooth working fine for me with kitkat stock. Same car with which i had problems with nexus 4, works with lg g2.

it's the other way around, actually. it introduced endless amount of "flaws" to the almost perfect LG's JB builds.

I decided to stick with the stock rooted jb as it came with the phone. If it ain't broke.......and I've found nothing to complain about.

I'm really thinking of going back to JB. Battery was heaven on there. I used to go 30 minutes SOT before it dropped to 99%. Now, after 12 minutes it drops. Battery life is not bad but once you taste batter, well, who doesn't want to stay at better. I just underclocked to 1.5Ghz for the day to see battery usage. First time underclocked with any device.

Hey guys, ive tested both. I would say battery on JB is better but overall speed is improved in KK (a least it feels like that).. so it just depends on your preferences..
(But i like the statusbar a looot more in KK)

Battery and speed is better for me on Kitkat.

Would you recommend Android 4.4.1 over 4.3?

UPDATE: would you recommend Android 4.4.1 over Android 4.3 on the Nexus 4? Why? Why not?
Okay, a little title change here. So I'm hearing some good things on 4.4.1, so let me ask you a few questions, even if it may be too early at this point:
- anyone who didn't recommend 4.4 before feels like 4.4.1 is major step forward?
- how's battery life, especially in regards of wakelocks and unexpected drainage? Does wakelockdetector work now?
- how's 4.4.1 performance compared to 4.3, both stock, is it definitely snappier?
- how's camera performing to 4.3, how's photoshere stitching?
- anyone running it WITHOUT factory reset and 4.4 & 4.4.1 installed over 4.3, experiencing zero problems?
Thank you!

Okay I guess it's a question I want answer to, but I posted in the General cause more than a simple answer I look forward to a positive discussion on the matter - is 4.4 stable, app-supported and bug free enough right now to easily recommend the update, would you rather suggest to wait until bug fixes or would you flat out say avoid it?
I added a poll to get a statistical look of the Community's take on this so others can check where 4.4 stands now on the Nexus 4 according to XDA.
Of course, KitKat is a great update. It's the best Android version yet and I love where Google is going with it.

obviously yes, the 4.4 google nexus update is awesome, dunno for other devices ( in future ). by the time samsung launches it, it will be full of bugs, ala 4.3 for s3
I think everyone who has an unlocked bootloader should for sure. Definitely needs to be ran for a couple days to get a feel for it. If you want customization you'll most likely go back to 4.3 as 4.4 rom's don't have very much. (yet)
Performance and UI changes (if there..) are nice. On the other hand there are too many bugs to recommend it. Also, and this does not apply to many, battery life of my N4 sucks after some days on KK. No, there is no bad app. Ask my bbs stats

I also have to say my battery life sucks now that I'm on 4.4.
Not sure what it is but I got 12 hours TOTAL. Not even with a lot of use. Most of the time the screen was off and I didn't much use it. That's compared to a full day of life when I was on JB.
I'm wondering if a factory reset would help it.
I'm running KRT16O on my phone and loving it. However, it appears I was one of the lucky ones. No bugs, no bootloop.
KRT16S is obviously not ready for rollout. It's been soft-bricking devices like crazy it seems. I hope Google halts the OTA and fixes this. Until then, I'm sticking with 16O.
Hold off and wait.
So, there are plenty of bugs here, lags on the lock screen, lags in the applications, applications which still doesn't working, camera is making very bad pictures and so on - take a look to android 4.4 bugs forum.
I am back to 4.3 and waiting for 4.4.1.
No, i don't recommend 4.4 on the nexus 4 yet.

Recommended. I'm on KRT16S with no problems whatsoever. Great fluidity and no bugs.
I think 4.4 has some good news, but not worth it. I was using paranoid ROOM with linaro franco kernel and i`m ready to get it back on my device.
krt16s
KRT16S is very good image,my phone is full apps and all working without problem,i use nova last beta 3 launcher and working realy fast,i dont like GEL icons(too big for me),battery is great, after 10 hours stand by time 4-6 %, ,on screen i think is wery good, betther than 4.3....no FC,no lags, everything work fluid and fast....
i flash with FB,and after flashing factory reset....
It's significantly better than 4.3 IMO. I personally clean flash for every major update after taking a backup, and I'm having absolutely no issues. UI is extremely smooth, no bugs with tethering or anything of that sort and battery life has actually improved.
I'd recommend a clean flash if you have the time, just to be thorough.
I would definitely recommend it. Performancewise...it has never been better imo! I don't experience any of those bugs mentioned above. Smoothness is just amazing.

Wow, quite difference experiences... so it appears there are bugs, but not for everyone...
How's that ART thing on the Nexus 4? Is it too experimental at this point to be of everyday use?

I switched to ART immediately upon updating last week. It runs great. I've only had a few bugs(Timely takes about 10 seconds to open). Beyond that, I like it. I let my friend who is using CM 11 on his GNex try it out last night and he was impressed with the performance.
If you get KitKat to install without soft-bricking, you're going to have a good experience IMO. However, due to the risk of bootloop, I cannot recommending the update at this time in good conscience.
4.4 is the best android version so far, and with ART is amazingly smooth!
Sure - I have been using since a day after Google released the factory images and I didn't have a single problem with it. I also flashed zip for transparent nav bar in the lockscreen and installed Nova launcher beta and everything is as smooth as butter
Well, i'm not using ART so far because I don't like to use a hacked lib or an outdated app to be able to use all my apps with it.
That aside, KRT16S has been awesome so far, battery life has improved, the UI is much smoother and with ApexPro 2.2.0 beta 1 the interface has the same transparency as GEL (Which I uninstalled already. I don't like the kiddie-sized icons, it looks too toy-like).
On KTR16S ... Battery is worse than KTR16O which is worse than 4.3 for me... My experience with ART was not great, but probably because my phone is almost full of files and got full (system and free space for storage) after a long time to optimize...after that I didn't notice a better performance and missed some of my apps so returned back to dalvik ...but I would recommend KitKat....I like GEL and about its size icons I changed DPI than got great for me

I'm sorry I still carry some noobage... install without soft bricking, what do you mean by that? I'm waiting for the OTA but still undecided whether to install when it arrives. Speaking of, if it does, can I install it over 4.3 keeping my apps & settings? I'm unrooted and not planning to.

performance v50018 vs 20a

I installed the new official rom v50020a and are disappointed with performance especially in games. That performance was superior v18a. This rom seemed to me the most powerful than all roms, since the battery is emptied very quickly, especially in stand by. In AnTuTu benchmark 18a give almost 27,000 and v20a less than 24,000. In Real Racing 3 feel the difference. V50020a is final rom for OTA? Performance and battery worse than the first official rom. I think I'll go back to 4.2.2.

If the v18a was superior, why not go back to it instead?
The problem is that the rom v18 of battery empties very quickly in standby. I have to install a custom rom based on v18 with another kernel.

What do you call 'very quickly'? I found it emptied slower than with 4.2.2 in standby with WiFi on.
I set the wi-fi to be turned off when the tablet is in stand by. It is among the settings after installing a new rom.

I don't, but that is not my point. What do you call losing charge very quickly?
I overdid it a little with unloading the battery. Battery runs exactly I was wi-fi settings on standby.

Did you notice any difference on the screen brightness, gamma values and 7 spots on the bottom?
Jessooca said:
The battery life is actually better,by nearly 2 hours. I have tested and ran it for 5 days, it's all about your settings. If you have the screen on 50% one day or 65% another day it's always going to fluctuate.
Theres no complaints about the battery life with 18 here, easily I get 2 hours more. Some days 4.

The fix for Watching Amazon Prime is in a thread by, i believe it was Surviveland....
Make sure that you have UNinstalled the flash player installed in your device if you have one installed first and then install the hacked one for compatibility reason.
1) Download Dolphin Browser from the Play Store
[/B]You MUST have Dolphin Jetpack on in the settings to enjoy it.
As far as I have noticed, Dolphin Jetpack better solves the compatibility with flash player, such as crash issue & freeze issue in full screen.
2) Download the hacked flash player HERE: http://goo.gl/MuU9SU
If your device refused to install apk outside Google Play, you need to change your settings in your device (Settings> Securities> Unknown resources) to allow installation of apps from unknown sources.
3) Make sure that the flash setting in Dolphin Browser (Click Menu>Settings>Web Content>Flash Player) is on.

Just bought a T-Mobile G2, had some questions regarding Development.

I'm a little confused about which forums and roms to follow for my particular model. Seems to be no original development for this version. Do the G2 forums have Roms that are universal with both the d801 (T-Mobile) and others (800, 802, etc...) thanks

Had a question. I should be receiving my g2 tomorrow and I'm hung up on which rom to go with.
Most important features to me are camera & battery life.
In your experience, if you have any... I was looking at either running Pac Rom, SlimKat, or Mahdi rom.
Do you think I'm better off with a rooted stock based rom, and if so which one of those would you recommend.
I'm coming from a Nexus 5 on SlimKat and a Note 3 on jellybeans
Thanks

I'm assuming you've ran AOSP ROM's before so you know what that's like. So for me I came from a Nexus 4, I'm as much of an AOSP fanboy as you'll ever meet. The second I got my G2 I rooted it and flashed SlimKat. SlimKat is an amazing ROM, probably the best AOSP ROM for the G2, with Mahdi a close 2nd. It was almost perfect to be honest, the battery life was amazing. I could get 2 days with a charge and about 6 hours of on screen time. Now the ONLY draw back was that the camera sucked balls in comparison to stock LG ROM. While it worked fine 80% of the time, sometimes it was laggy, switching from FFC to rear would hang up, and shutter speed was slow. Quality was decent but not amazing for the pics. And this was the issue with any AOSP ROM.
Because of that, I went ahead and upgraded to T-Mobile's official 4.4.2 KK ROM and it has been very good. I use xposed to do a little modding, but ran it full stock for a week so far and I really like it. With NOVA launcher I'm having no problems, the camera is a tons better than AOSP. The cam app itself has some cool features and the quality plus shutter speed is so much improved. But of course there's a drawback... Battery life isn't as good as AOSP. I'm getting about 1/3 less than what I was used to. But one thing that's not really talked about on the G2 is how ridiculously fast this thing charges. I plug it in at like 10% left, leave my room for about 20 mins, come back and it's at like 58%. So because of that, the lessened battery life doesn't bug me. I still get well over a day on a full charge though, which is a HUGE upgrade in itself compared to my Nexus 4 where I had to charge 2-3 times a day.
Anyways, sorry for the mini rant. If you have another questions, feel free to ask! I've only had this G2 for 2 weeks, but finally getting the hang of the "what to know" for the device.

Man.. That's no rant Lmao that was more than I could have asked for.
I love aosp as well... My note 3 was on VZW so locked bootloader means no go.
My Nexus 5 was nice but the battery was terrible.
My other gripe was the as you said, the camera quality.
Can't believe they still haven't gotten that down yet. I saw that Google might be releasing a stand alone camera app and I believe opening up the api.. So I bet that will help for devs.
The only reason I'm hesitant to run the stock rom is bc coming from touchwiz, I'm not looking forward to that type of heavy hidious skin again.
Do they have a rooted, debloated stock 4.4.2 rom yet?
Thanks again for the help. Trying to hit the ground running with this phone

Man.. That's no rant Lmao that was more than I could have asked for.
I love aosp as well... My note 3 was on VZW so locked bootloader means no go.
My Nexus 5 was nice but the battery was terrible.

My advice is to run stock for a week and see how you like it. LG ROM is not bad at all, especially since I expected it to be very bad since I dislike TouchWiz so much.
Yes there's a stock debloated ROM, but newer G2's (like mine) can't run it. Only the official one works. just have to wait for root and recovery to come for KK.

I should add that the phone is coming to me with TWRP 2.7 and Paranoid Android latest Beta 3 nightly. Would it be possible for me to flash the stock debloated?

Oh okay, then good chance you can. Just flash it through TWRP and if you don't get white lines then you're good to go. Worse case scenario, you just wipe and reflash something else. Also, flash the KK radio before flashing the official KK ROM.

OK cool. With a phone with an internal battery.. How do I shut down and/or boot back into recovery manually?
Also.. Is the kitkat radio a T-Mobile specific radio listed in T-Mobile Android development?

I'll link you to the radio thread when I get home. When phone is off, press and hold the power and volume down. Then press press power button twice after you see the white fastboot screen.

[INFO] Comments about last update 4.4.4 Xperia Z

Hi everyone!
Just got the 4.4.4 from Pc companion.
It seems ok! Fast and smoother than 4.4.2
Battery drain is just ok but was better on 4.3 version.
RAM is occuping a lot for some apps:
Settings ~140MB
Google keyboard ~50MB
Facebook -113MB
Google search 56MB
New xperia live wallpaper ~100MB !!!????
Do you notice the same or similiar things??
I still notice temperature is increasing easily when looking on web, facebook, youtube after a while.
I still think 4.3 version (.101) was the best for battery and less heating on back cover.
I also tought "Move to SD" option was coming but nothing!
How you doing with this new update???
Aosp its the best option for me

Notification sometimes is partially opened and there are still problems with music but less than was on 4.4.2. Performance ok
The lag is finally gone, the Phone is really smooth.
Battery life definetly improved
Google location battery issue is finally solved.
There are still sound problems, the sound lags from time to time.
Overall, very pleased with the update
It's butter than the 4.4.2 specially buttery life but I still prefer paranoid android
I don't know you guys but with 4.2.2 and 4.3 this phone was awesome but now I can see he doesn't like this s***
that much...
Notification bar is not always so smoother and temp is going up easily. Maybe I should try to flash with flashtool.
Then if nothing is better i'll go for Cyanogen or an old stock update.
Please tell what you think after days and if you find issues!
There is one pure aosp but not on xda due some blabla, pabx one. In cm11 rootcloack is not working anymore. Pabx rom is the fastest and stabe for me, combined with snaphdr the photo quality is the same like in sony rom.

Only Battery Performance have been changed for me . . .
Love This Update!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally Bluetooth works with car controls. Couldnt use my steering controls or phonebook since 4.1. Phone very fluid and fast.
Hey guys, I know it's not the right thread, but I have one quick question.
I'm about to unlock my BL and would like to install some custom rom, aosp or cm based. So can someone recommend me some, with a lot of features, like double tap to wake etc... Feel free to pm me if for some reasone it's inappropriate to post it here...
Help is very appreciated, thanks.
Is it just me or is the default white balance settings not that great in this update:?
I came from KMV from what I can say between AOSP and Sony Stock ROM is that stock rom no matter what will always have the best battery life but in terms of security fixes AOSP :3

So STOCK ROM are best for battery? I would like to try CM11 but battery life is very important for me. What you think?
Ok
I just flashed it today and after few minutes flashed other non stock ROM
It was disappointing... In other pages saying WIFI IMPROVED but it wasn't
I've faced a WiFi problems like dropping and no internet access while I'm actually connected. Same as other stock ROMs
The speed was great. Battery life was ok
But the WiFi is a huge problem for me. That's why I flashed custom ROM....

I dunno bro but my home WiFi is pretty weak. So I got drop outs but it's perfectly fine on custom ROMs
Maybe it's yes better than 4.4.2 but my home WiFi is weak and that's may be the reason
But I can say it's need little improvements

Google wallet tap and pay works on this update as HCE is finally enabled. I'm using it on a c6606 with the generic ES update on it.
What?

I flashed the generic es version of the 4.4.4 update onto my wife's c6606. I had previously read that NXP HCE support was added into android after 4.4.2. When I opened up wallet, I was asked if I wanted to set up tap and pay. It now works, though I'm sure all the general wallet restrictions apply (us only...).

Do not make a thread without a decent title. Threads with a title like yours tends to get deleted upon sight.
You will need to find what is causing the lag.
Also as for battery it has alot less to do with the kernel as it does with what you have installed in your device and how you use the device. Samething goes for lag.
Also as stated lollipop us known as the Vista of android releases.

First off watch the swearing unless you want a one way ticket to bansville.
As for the title that can be edited.
For a ported rom what did you expected. It's an is it made for the device so you will take hits in places.
I have no issue with battery life. I use an aosp based rom and get 2 days on a single charge.
