Galaxy Tab 7.7 on the way

Saw this yesterday. Looks like the 7.7 appears to be on the way.
For those of you like me who have recently picked up the 7.0 plus... What are your thoughts on this? I am happy with my 7+ but the 7.7 is what I was originally waiting for.

Like you I was strongly attracted to the 7.7 when I was in the market to buy. At that time, no word when/if we'd get it here. And imports were $600 and up. Bought the Gt 7+ and have not looked back since.
Gotta say yes, the larger screen (not by much ), AMOLED quality (very nice) and slightly faster processor makes a very attractive package.
But....
Our community here is growing (not light speed but still), we have root and CWM (thanks gary9d), more than a few recognized devs are following here and there are a selection of cases/sleeves with more on the way.
Who is to say the aftermarket accessories manufacturers will embrace SO MANY different "flavors" of GTab (7.0, 7.0+, 7.7, 8.9, 10.1 and perhaps an 11.0?) I'm doubtful myself.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but there are quite a few more upgrades on the 7.7 over the 7.0 Plus. Bigger battery (5100mAh vs 4000mAh), thinner, lighter, 64GB option, and as you mentioned better display all around - Super AMOLED Plus, higher resolution at 1280 x 800, and larger at 7.7 inches. The only sacrifice really is that it's ever so slightly taller and wider in dimensions, and probably will cost a bit more. I wouldn't underestimate the number of people holding out for the 7.7, I think the dev community will be strong, and I suspect it will have support for CyanogenMod 9.
Although as with all electronics something better will always be just around the corner, as rumors are swirling of a Galaxy Tab 8.3 in the works (Super AMOLED Plus, quad core 1.5GHz, Ice Cream Sandwich), so if you decide to stick with the 7.0 Plus no one is stopping you from enjoying it to the fullest!

You're right, thanks! I forgot about the battery.
Quite right that there's always "something better" just around the corner. If one were to wait for the next best thing, one would never get anything I suspect. As long as whatever you gets does what you want, it's all good.
It's can be a crap-shoot on community support. Samsung devices have the reputation for quality hence usually a good following. That said, I believe that people who gravitate to forums like this tend to be more tech-centric than the majority of tab users. I do wonder though as I read several articles (trades and users) praising the 7+ but somewhat negative mentions about the price. I am curious just how high Android tabs will be able to fetch. Granted, it's my belief that even the $499 iPad is over priced by at least $100 but I wonder if the $400 price point might be the "sweet spot" for full-featured tabs regardless of size? I'm not a "gamer" so my power needs are modest.
This is my first Samsung tab and I am impressed. But so many screen size choices? Price and not so much screen size/features, I suspect, will drive many sales. Witness B&N and Amazon. I confess I am sure I'll be comparing at BB the 7.7 and other screens when it hits!

Isnt the 7.7 going to be starting at $600? The upgrades look good but im not sure if its an extra $200 good.
The 7.0+ is already a damn good tablet.

Well we still don't know what the official prices are going to be, the sites that are offering pre-orders are pretty much just making up their own prices. I have heard however the official price in Australia will be $579 for the 16GB and $649 for the 32GB, and that's in AUD. Looking at the iPad 2 prices in AUD they are almost identical, and we don't know if these prices are for the WiFi or 3G/4G model, but I would suspect the 7.7 will be between $450-500 for the 16GB WiFi model in the US.

Can't wait to see it and compare it with my 7+. Size is my main concern, 7.7 is quite long and wider. If a device is too big, I cant really bring it out whenever I like. Not So useful and convenient like 7 inch tablet too. I once had a larger tablet and I almost left it everyday at my home, sold it at last. Anyway, 7.7 is worth waiting.

Hi. Im new to this part of xda. And this is somewhat bothersome news as I just bought my plus today. First tablet in some time that made me think wow. I have an ipad now. Owned the Transformer and Dell Streak 5 and 7. I was going to wait until spring.g to see the new XOOM, ipad3, and TF Prime but decided after seeing this I thought this could last awhile before going down in price.

I don't think the upgrades from the 7.7 are worth it.
It will be really disappointing if we never get any good roms... But I'm mostly happy with root as it is.

Anyone who wants to sell The Galaxy Tab 7.7 can write me an PM! But I want it this year in Germany I would Pay 1000 Euros Cash!!!

I am very attracted to the 7.7 personally. Have an 8.9 that I'm planning on selling very soon. (Tegra 2 just plain sucks compared to Exynos frankly), and though it's a nice form factor, it's not for me. No phone calling ability is a big downer too; I like being able to swap my SIM card between my original Tab and phone depending on the situation.
Have the Note too, but not sure if I will keep it or not. Waiting to see what ICS will be like on it. Could be amazing, or could just be "meh." If it's not that much better, may sell my Note too and just stick to an SGS2/7.7 combo.
Then again, CES is right around the corner, so maybe it may be worth waiting longer still depending on what else may be coming out for 2012!

My main reason for buying the 7+ is because it's quite versatile. I don't want to be lugging around a phone, tablet and laptop with me along with their respective accessories and chargers all day so I opted to buy the 7+. This means I can use my ultraportable for serious computing (negating the need to carry the charger), and the tablet for all my communication needs plus some light gaming, reading or browsing.
So it doesn't have the largest battery, or the best resolution, or the latest and greatest processor; but, it's got a large enough screen to comfortably read eBooks, browse the interwebs, and pretty much everything else. It's got decent enough performance (better than decent, actually) to handle all the apps I want + sd card expansion. And most importantly (for me), it doubles as a phone.
I know I look silly when I take calls on it, but I'm okay with that. Like the famous philosopher Jagger once said 'you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you get what you need'.
I love the 8.9 and initially wanted to get that, but in the end telephone capabilities and sd card expansion won out over a larger,more gorgeous screen.

Do you have a non wifi version? I got my 7+ yesterday and cant find a dialer on it

I am pickinmg my 7.7 wifi up tomorrow from **** Smith in Australia - can't wait, been wanting a tablet for ages. I had originally ordered a Transformer Prime until Amazon canceled the order. But this is the tablet I really wanted.

I don't know. I mean, I was planing to get the 7+ near the end of this month. I know that the screen and whatnot is better or the 7.7, but I seriously don't know if I would like the better screen or use the maybe bit more charge from it having a bigger battery to spend $200 more then what I was planing on spending.

I'm afraid that 7.7 might still have the Black stains/blotches on the screen, just like in S II. When viewing on dark room.

So no specific release date or price? If its not much more in price than the 7 plus and coming out fairly soon id like to return mine and wait for the 7.7

On the fence about getting the new Note 10.1 2014 Edition

I am in love with this tablet. It checks on pretty much everything that I'm looking for. But one thing is holding me back from jumping the gun on October 10..... the price.
550 for a 16gb and 600 for a 32gb sounds like a no brainer. But I feel that it's a no small pocket change to drop on a tablet. I know the screen is crazy good and the s pen makes it head and shoulders over what's currently available. But I keep on trying to justify the reasoning for the 600 price tag.
I believe the thing that I keep going back to is the lack of tablet optimized apps for Android. Don't get me wrong, I've been pro android since the htc hd2, and I been through my share of samsung devices (got the note 2, 1st day it launched) . But I also had the original galaxy tab 10.1 and chose to get it early and paid the premium for it. Then it seemed within less than 4 months, the price dropped and continued to do so. And even though it was great for consuming videos and browsing the web I felt like the majority of the apps just didn't either scaled properly to the 10.1 form factor, or they weren't as polished as the iPad apps are.
I waited last week, to see what Microsoft was going to do with their newly redesigned surface pro 2, but it failed to excite me unlike the new 10.1 note is doing. If I could dual boot jellybean and windows on the surface pro 2, i'd probably look into that.
Maybe things have changed for the better on the tablet side for Android apps. But i ultimately ended up giving the tablet to my grandfather so he could Skype his grandkids and watch football. I just want to see what you guys's reasons were for being excited and early adopters and paying the premium price for early adoption.

Well for some, myself included, this is a luxury item and think the slight increase in price from last years model isn't that bad. For your money you would be buying the best tablet available (imo) and it will be quite the beast for your daily consumption, and it will also last for years. Its really a laptop without the keyboard that has much better battery life and is more portable in the scheme of things. I'm not a laptop person and rather a tablet for the things I want to do.Since Android is taking tablets serious these days its gotten and will be much better in the future since its proving to not be a niche item any longer. I'm really anxious to start seeing reviews in the next week or so in the meanwhile..... I guess you have some deciding to do and I just wanted to chime in.

I too am not a laptop person. I was taken back a little bit by the price when it was announced. I was hoping for the 32GB to be around $550. For me the extra $50 is ok for all the extras it comes with. But really what it boils down to is how much I use my current tablet.
My current tablet is the HP Touchpad with Cyanogenmod Android ICS installed. I am a desktop fanatic and was completely blown away by how much time I shifted from my desktop to the tablet. I am a news junkie and a Reddit.com reader so I get tons of use out of a device that is, in my opinion, perfectly set up for internet consumption.
All in all, I love the 10 inch tablet form factor and use it for hours every day so I feel the price is justified for me.

I really am liking the extra features that Samsung has added on top of Android, such as being able to run two apps side by side. After having the last two Transformers (Prime and Infinity) and having a ton of issues with their performance, this is will be the best premium tablet on the market, and that comes with a price. Sure you can get a laptop for that price, but if a tablet fits your needs better, it'll be hard to top this tablet. If you need to save some money, wait for the next Nexus device. If this tablet isnt in your budget, don't feel pressured to get the device. It is better to be straight financially than to stress over a luxury item.

i think even if the S-pen is bad, as long as that technology is in the tablet, you can use something like the bamboo FEEL by wacom to supplement the S-pen usage

This a premium product, it's going to be priced accordingly. I was honestly expecting $700, it's coming in under my expectations. This is a steal at this price.

Just make sure you get a microSD card, as the note, and most phones and tablets in general, only have a microSD slot, not a full SD card slot.

I think that is a little high priced by mabe $50 bucks. I have owned dozens of android tablets since version 1.5 and I have a nexus 7 2013 edition. I am looking forward to this one would have liked at least 64gb. I also have an ipad 4 that is the 128gb version it was $799 plus $99 insurance plus $40 case plus tax = about a grand. I love the apps on ios but i know you can do more on android. I would like to see android tablet apps like iOS apps and 128gb and up android tablets to be able to install lots of apps on as apps are only instalable on internal memory. I know I overpaid for my ipad but I don't think the price would be far off with a comparable memory spec android tablet.

Thats why there are different specifications and different price points... To serve the masses..

if you dont use the spen much id recommend something like the lg tablet coming out. Great size and specs with way less cost. Lots of tablets to fit almost any price range exist.

The new kindle is also 8.9 inch screen, sd 800, awesome screen and ppi, and much cheaper. The coming nexus 10 will have great specs and a 10 inch screen and will be cheaper. The tf701 infinity will be out soon and has a 10 inch screen, tegra 4 a d gorgeous screen res and ppi and will be cheaper. Those are the most popular. There are others you can google.

At the rate ASUS is going they will not be releasing the new infinity until 2014. Joking aside....I hear rumors its pushed back to mid-November though...something must be wrong. I'm not going to wait any longer for ASUS.

Where did you get price info for the tf701?? Because the tf700, at least at launch, was priced on par with the note 10, and that price didn't include the keyboard **** either, which case about $150 or so more.

I was researching and following the new Transformer tf701 for a bit and I think the consensus was that it would be $399 for just the tablet and $499 with dock for the base model but I'm not 100% on that and I think its unofficial...I could be wrong though

I have not heard pricing myself, didn't think pricing or availability had been said yet, at least not in any of the major news outlets or Asus website.

this price is on par for what i paid for my TF700 tho, so i'd believe it.

Note 8.0 or upcoming LG G Pad 8.3?

Hey everyone.
Im gonna sell my Nexus 10 because its too big for me. I cant play games or surf the web comfortably. I use my tablet a lot everyday, much more than my phone, so I need it to be comfortable.
I think 8 inches is the perfect size for tablets, so Ive decided Im not gonna buy the Nexus 7.
So this leaves me with the Note 8.0 or the upcoming LG G Pad 8.3. This one has a 1080P screen and Snapdragon 600 (which Im not sure if its better than the CPU in the Note 8.0).
Both have 4.2.2, 2GB RAM, microSD slot, etc.
Do you guys think I should go for the LG because of the higher screen resolution or for the Note 8.0? It also has better materials, with the back being aluminum instead of plastic. It also has something similar to Multiwindow and another positive is the on screen buttons, much better suited for a tablet than capacitive and hardware buttons of the Note.
I must add I will have absolutely no use for the S Pen. I dont care for that and dont need it, so this will not factor in favor of the Note. Maybe I could even go for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

Sounds like you're in my situation. I sold my N10 due to the lag and size and got myself a Note 8. I thought I'd like the stylus more than I do, so I barely use it, even while browsing the Web. I plan to sell my Note 8 for a G Pad once it releases due to the better internals and screen. If you don't care about the stylus, just wait for the G Pad.
The only thing I'll miss about the Note 8 is the multi window feature. It's so nice for meetings if you need two apps open or need to take notes while viewing a PDF.
EDIT: stay away from the tab 3. It sucks.

I think a lot depends on what you will use it for. If you take notes I have to say the Note 8 is a great tablet. The LG looks pretty sweet, not sure the 600 is a step up from the 54xx in the note.

I'll be using it mainly at home.
For note taking I normally use the Swype keyboard, so I don't really have any use for the stylus.
The full HD screen of the LG is a huge plus, but there's still no word when will it be available everywhere and at what price.

I know nothing about the LG, but the 8 inch tablet is the perfect size. I much prefer the Note 8 over the Nexus 7.

Yeah. I think 7 inches is too small to use for hours every day at home.

LG G Pad 8.3 to be available October 14th in Korea and other markets by the end of the year.
Price: 510$.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

What about LTE and using this as a phone replacement. I am leaning toward Note 8.0 because I like the idea of using it with a smartwatch.

The Snapdragon 600 is better than the SoC in the Note 8. In fact, considerably so. It is the same SoC as in the Galaxy S4, and benchmarks significantly higher than the Note 8, especially for video. Real world usage though, I don't notice much of a difference, if any. Perhaps it would not be ideal to push a 1080p display though.
If you have no use for the S-Pen, why would you even consider the Note 8? It is only worth the price if you have an actual use for the pen. Unlike the iPad Mini or the Nexus 7, it is not a tablet for the general public, and was never meant to be.

I just sold my note 10 and got the 8, the LG I read has no promised updates, the note 8 is promised key lime pie.. I love my note

I don't agree with the statement saying the Note 8 was not intended for the general public. Thats complete nonsense.
The cpu in the Note 8 is also faster than the Snapdragon. Its the gpu that isn't as fast.

I'm selling my Note 8 for the G Pad. The G Pad has better internals, better screen, better design and materials. I don't use the S Pen nearly as much as I thought I would so there's no point in me hanging on to this. Besides, I'd just put CM on the G Pad, so updates don't matter from LG. If you put CM on the Note 8, you'd be missing 90% of the features.

I'm in the market for a new 8" tablet as well and the only android tablet that currently fits that criteria is the Tab 8 or Note 8.
I'm very interested in the G Pad 8.3 as well but the thing is there any indicator that there will be developers developing for it here in XDA? I don't think LG's software is any good and I'd love it if any AOSP roms are available it.
Edit: wops, didn't realise this is a Note 8.0 forum. Thought it was a place for general discussion. Explains my comment that is not related to the Note 8 at all. Sorry

You don't have to agree, but given it's price point as compared to the nexus 7 and ipad mini, I'm right. It was never intended as a mainstream tab and will never sell nearly as many units as the other tabs I mentioned. If you have no use for the pen, there are cheaper tabs out there.

i agree that the note 8 isn't targeted to the general public. the price and features make it a more concentrated device made for those who need or want the spen and wacom digitizer. a gen pub device price would have fallen in line with other devices. add the fact that promotion on most note products isn't very prevalent.

I've just ordered my G Pad for 314€ with postage in price. The other candidates were the Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 ME302C (with Intel) for about 340€, and Ainol Novo 9 Spark for 250€. The MeMO Pad is a bit too big for me. The Spark has meaningless high resolution (aka Retina) and it's just an "Ainol"... you know... sh!ty components and stuff.
The ideal tablet size would be somewhere about 8,9"-9", so the LG's G Pad with 8,3" is the closest to it. And for it's price it offers some really nice HW and build quality. I just hope the ROM cookers and devs will like it too
About those W8 8" tablets, I dont know, I don't really trust W8 is enough multimedial and optimized for use on tablets. I prefer Android

I'm still happy with my purchase and the deal I got on it ($259 USD via Newegg). The Samsung Pro 8.4 is the only one that makes me blink. Faster chip, good. Marginally larger battery to deal with the screen, bad. Touchwiz, higher resolution screen, meh. The G Pad, for its meager shortcomings, offers a heckuva lot of bang for the buck, at the price I got it anyway. Not regretting it!

Lol yeah I missed that deal I live in New jersey so payed tax $300 so if it's around $300 -$350 I would be all for it lol. My gpad comes tomorrow so well see I guess. It should have pretty good development support and accessories.

I feel the same. The 8.4 inch display model is pretty sweet.. Pricing may be a bit higher, so again.. I wouldn't buy it just cause of that. And the 3 hardware buttons on the front is a no go. It's old and I don't like it as much as having a blank screen where it's just me and the screen/movie/book.. The over all design looks good ol' fashion Samsung. Looks sturdy and has kindof a Galaxy S2 feel to it. The S2 was the best mobile phone I've ever had. Damn a lot of stuff happened back then. But yeah, looks like a decent tablet. But I think I'll be quite happy with the G Pad still, since it does have what I'm looking for in a nice, cheap package and decent build quality.

The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa CPU is a new gen processor which samsung tries to make it use all eight cores at once. If a tablet with that chip comes out it will surely be very powerful and definitely better than gpad.

As long as Samsung uses a home button i will never buy again.I'm very happy with the pad.

The new Touch Wiz looks really awful. I don't even know what they're thinking. It's like they want it to work and look like Windows 8 but don't want to use Windows 8. Personally I wouldn't touch the new tabs with a 10 foot pole.

I am an owner of note 10.1 2012 ..... I am looking up to
Change my tab as there is no updates for it at all ... Till now it is on version 4.1.2 and it is 100% guaranteed now after these pro tablets unveiled there will be no updates for the older devices ... I wont buy any of these new pro tablets because of the price firstly and in the future they will be thrown to the dust like my note 10.1 now ..... Also i am thinking of getting lg g pad 8.3 but no software updates like my current note and lack of dev support keeps me away

I'd be very surprised if the 8.4 was less than $399. I'm sure Samsung considers it to be fully equivalent to the newest iPad mini. Samsung used to compete on price but no more. When I bought my first plasma TV in 2007 Samsung was a much better deal than Panasonic or Pioneer. When it came time to buy another one last year I thought Samsung was too expensive and bought an LG I'm very happy with.

Quite simply, I am going to switch to a Tab Pro 8.4 as soon as it is available.
It has a way better display, it has NFC (which I miss), it's way more powerful (G Pad is pretty slow), it has a polycarbonate back (I dislike the faux leather, I would much rather have a rubber back like the Nexus 7 2013 or the old Samsung HyperGlaze but anything is WAY, WAY better than effing METAL!!!!) and the Samsung one is the best version of Android around (MultiWindow *alone* would do it for me).
I can't wait to get my hands on it.
P.S. Actually, the ONLY reason I am interested in mid-sized tablets (8"/8.5") is WEIGHT.
Anything beyond 350/400 grams is simply too heavy to be ergonomic and truly comfortable for extended use.
The new Samsung Tab Pro 10.1" is 469grams and I am planning on trying it out with the intention of switching back to a 10.1"...
Ideally, my perfect tablet would be something like the Note Pro 12.2" but would weigh no more than 400 grams with an all-day battery life... (which is, of course, not technically possible. YET).

Pretty Slow? Try CM 11, Stock is slow. Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.
I am sort of disappointed that the G Pad is no longer the best 8 incher but it's still pretty great so its fine...

I doubt I will bite. I like my LG 8.3 GPE a lot. Samsung does this to me every year: announce something that captures my imagination, I'm intrigued, I convince myself it will be at a palatable price point, and then finally delivers something I consider too expensive and doesn't hit the sweet spot for my tastes.
I do own a Galaxy Note 10.1, and I love it. But the 2014 edition left me a bit cold.
I doubt I will dip into these waters again, probably just upgrading to a new Nexus 10 when the timing feels right.

I'm very happy with my G Pad and won't switch. If the Samsung 8.4 was available a couple of weeks ago at a competitive price I would have taken it, simply due to previous experience with both LG and Samsung phones. I like the idea of hard buttons on the bezel - means more screen space. There will also be more development on the Samsung tablets.

The G Pad with CM11 or the G Pad GPE are surely faster but you would have to give up, among other things, Knock On, the IR Remote and full SDcard support and those are huge deal breakers for me.
True, LG's ROM is most certainly slower and laggier than stock Android but it's also way more feature complete (which is probably also *why* is slower...). Features that I do use.
Besides the ones just mentioned, there are dozens of things like Quickmemo, the overlay apps (QSlide), the keyboard with the numbers row, the volume and brightness sliders and on and on...
Switching from G Pad to Notepro 8.4 seems useless to me.

I also forgot to mention that notwithstanding pretty much identical size and weight, the display is sensibly bigger on the Tab Pro as it's not only 0.1" physically bigger but it also doesn't have virtual buttons taking up screen real estate.
So, far from "useless"... The money I will lose selling the G Pad and buying the Tab Pro is really a very small price to pay for such a big upgrade.
P.S. I am not dissing my G Pad, still like it a lot and still think it's the overall best mid-size tablet on the market right now.

I have no intentions of switching as i really love this lg. I also suspect that these new Pro models will not be cheap. For my uses the lg is plenty fast and smooth. And since a tablet is just entertainment for me, there is only so much any tablet is worth and i bet these new Samsung tablets will exceed that price.

What Rom will it come with? I've learned to only buy with Qualcomm cpus because they get the best long-term support. There's a chance that the Qualcomm ones are only for lte support....

You said switching to a notepro 8.4 would be a small price to pay, but you have no idea how much its going to cost. I bet at least 400.
BTW, knock on works just fine on CM 11. IR support is missing, haven't tried a SD card. Is it not going to work? Oh, and be sure the new bloated "pro" touchwiz will be slower than the lg rom.

Galaxy Tab A 10.1 32 GB 2016 or 17 or 18??

Hi All,
Terribly confused - am looking to try Android again after years of being iOS, want to get mid range tab, so the 10.1 A looks about right.
But....Whats with all the 2016, 2017, 2018 after the model numbers? Does it matter, is there any difference?
I am looking at a 32GB Black 2016 10.1 Galaxy Tab A, its showing as the 2016 version, will that be ok?

Samsung hasn't updated the Tab A tablets since about 2015, and it shows. Ancient slow CPU. Only 16GB storage. Models other than 10.1 do not even have FHD resolution. You might as well buy Amazon Fire HD/HD 10, at least they're cheap.

Oh I didn't know that Samsung has finally increased the internal storage from 16GB to 32GB. That's basically the only improvement since around mid-2015. However, these tablets still come with ancient A53 CPUs built on 28nm process and no FHD screens except for the 10.1 model (2016), but which strangely does not have stereo speakers in landscape mode. I guess we all must enjoy watching a widescreen video when sound is firing from just one side. It basically remains very low end hardware. I don't know what's Samsung thinking.

Tablets don't usually have the same high end specs that phones have. And most people are just browsing the internet/facebook/instagram/etc. They really don't need the top end soc's. Especially when you compare a ~$200 tablet with a phone that is ~$800+. People don't understand how much the display costs.

But there is a still serious problem with the progression of the "Tab A" series. Even low-end smartphones for 200USD can have decent specs and performance. I recently picked up an Honor 6X smartphone (under 200USD, at Best Buy), and it has 1080p screen, good camera, and CPU that's built on 16nm process, resulting in great battery life and good performance. The new version, Honor 7X, has even slightly better specs and the same price. On the other hand, The Tab A tablets cost 200USD or more, but most them have only HD (720p screens) and CPU built on ancient 28nm process. Almost no updates to spec since 2015.
If anyone hasn't checked, these days Amazon sells tablets with such specs for under 100 bucks. Such tablets are so mundane that Amazon offers four and six-pack boxes of them. An Amazon tablet with 1080p screen and much better CPU costs about 150USD tops (Fire HD 10). Amazon's software is allegedly crap, but you can install a Google Playstore on it and use it like any android tablet.
My main question is, where is the Samsung Tab A2, A3? Isn't it about time Samsung offers a cheap tablet with modern specs? The astonishing thing is that Apple's iPad 2017 model has MSRP of 320-something, and is often on sale under 300 bucks. There is a rumor that Apple will introduce a 260 dollar iPad this year. And what's going to be Samsung's answer to it? The same Tab A from 2015?

OK, we get it....You don't like Samsung tablets. You also just spent the entire first paragraph comparing the tablet to a smartphone. It's still a good solid tablet that will suffice for the majority of tablet owners and will outlive many times over some of those throw away 100 buck tablets.

It seems like you need to read my previous post again. I have made a comparison to competing tablets. The comparison to smartphones came as an answer to a guy who seemed to imply that I complain that a 200 dollar Tab A tablet is not as good as an 800 dollar smartphone. Well, in response to him, I gave him an example of a 200 dollar smartphone that slaughters ALL Tab A tablets that exist today (well, except the screen size).
It's still a good solid tablet that will suffice for the majority of tablet owners and will outlive many times over some of those throw away 100 buck tablets.

It's like saying that 2010 iPhone 4 is still great and will serve its owners for many years more. Now, I don't know what qualifies for the definition of a "throw away" tablet, but from your words I guess you think that if a tablet costs 100 bucks it must be throw away? Ok. But how does it make you feel that the Samsung Tab A tablets have specs of a 80USD throwaway Amazon tablet? I mean seriously, you would throw away a cheap Amazon tablet, but you wouldn't throw away a Samsung Tab A tablet even though it has the same hardware specs but costs about two to three times more?
If you would like to see a fair comparison to tablets, how about Lenovo Tab 4 Plus 8/10? 1080p screen, CPU built on a modern process. Price is about the same. Lenovo gives you a 2016-2018 technology. Samsung is selling you a 2014 spec tablet for a ridiculous price. I don't really know why ANYONE today would buy Samsung Tab A when something like Lenovo Tab 4 (same price, but much better specs), Amazon Fire (same specs, but much cheaper), or Huawei Mediapad M3 exist. Hell, like I have ALREADY mentioned before, even Apple's 2017 iPad slaughters the Samsung Tab A tablets.
I think the main question now is, will Samsung eventually update the Tab A series, or will it just sell off the remaining stock and then cancel the brand? I mean seriously, does this question not linger in anyone's mind? The damn thing hasn't been updated, except cosmetically, since about 2015. My conclusion is that Samsung will abandon this line and will only continue with the more expensive Tab S line.

The Lenovo Tab 2 Plus clocks in at EUR 50 more than the Tab A 2016.
That makes the Tab A 2016 still the best value/money tablet with broad dev support in 2018, like it or not.
You will be shocked to learn that there are folks running the latest 2018 software on 2013 hardware and it's completely sufficient for their use cases.

As an owner of Amazon Kindle Fire, and after reading Akopps's initial reply to this thread, I felt obligated to point out the glaringly obvious - it would be ridiculously foolish to buy an Amazon tablet as an alternative to a Samsung tablet - you cannot install Google Play Store, therefore you cannot install many apps without circumventing Amazon's setup.
