[Q] Purchasing Advice Needed

hi all,
im after some of your advice as to the best tablet, im going to ask in the Transformer and Galaxy forums as well, but id like your opinions on what is the best tablet to buy, obviously you guys are using the Xoom already, and are happily modding the hell out of them, so you may have experience with the others as well.
i am trying to find somewhere which has all 3 which i can look at side by side, but in the UK im pretty much left with Pc world/Currys.. so i thought id do the next best thing and talk to people who have/use them.
i have narrowed my choices to;
Motorola Xoom,
Asus Transformer
Samsung Galaxy 10.1
if possible can you let me know what your experiences are like with any of them.

There are already quite a few threads in General and in Q&A touching on the comparsion between these tablets. There's been pretty frank discussion of pros and cons, but as you'd expect on a Xoom forum, most passionate cooments were pro-Xoom. Check them out...you will need to go back a few pages in both sections, but it makes for some lively reading.
Good luck with your decision-making process (but buy the Xoom!)

The Xoom is quite heavy so if you want to hold it with one hand for a minute or two, it isn't the right tablet. It's built really durable but the weight factor is a big con for me. It also has really good specs, just look at reviews on youtube on the tablets. Also, make sure you see all your options! Many of these tablets are getting a price reduction via coupon so find them first so you save a hundred or two.

The Xoom isn't the heaviest tab, but it is the best built. Those others incorporate a lot of plastic and flex a lot if squeezed. There are some issues with all of them, some are related to build quality/quality control, and others are more subjective.

I purchased my Xoom from best buy 2 weeks ago at the time of purchase I had a play on the Asus and Acer. I chose the XOOM on the back of the better build quality and feel. Yes it is that little bit heavier but it feels better. I also thought about the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 to match it with my Galaxy SII phone but the lack of an sd slot was a big let down for me. Since then Google have purchased part of Motorola which should mean that the Xoom should be supported for a long time to come.

I've had my Xoom since Feb 24th at 11:12 a.m. & it's hands down the best to me.I love it.I played with the Samsung 10.1 in the store a few weeks ago & wasn't impressed.All it was was thinner..The screen on it didn't blow me away as some people in the 10.1 forum suggests.Me & my Xoom have been thru a lot together

Just come through the same problem as you and narrowed it down to the xoom, for build and expansion and the galaxy tab, for screen and light wieght.
The deciding factor was the price, pc world now do the xoom for £329 wifi or £400 for 3g. I couldnt turn down an offer like that and havent looked back since yes the xoom is a little heavy but I like that! And the screen is fine too, not as bright as the galaxy tab or as vivid colours but long as your not comparing them back to back you'll never notice it tbh.

I think the Xoom's colors are more natural, if more subdued. I had a chance to compare my Xoom vs. a Galaxy Tab 10.1 yesterday and the GTab's screen is certainly vivid! Very good for some things (movies, games), but as an artist, I like to see my work and others' work in a more natural color palette. YMMV.

Very true and feel the same myself and was the same reason I went for the desire HD rather than the gallaxy s but some people see bright and think its better, its all down to personal taste I suppose

Definitely the xoom. Its built better then other tabs and has some great support as well.
I couldn't be happier.
The sound beats all other tabs and the display may not be as bright but its ultra responsive. The transformer had a nice responsive screen as well but build quality was subpar.
Like others said before this tablet has a subdued color palette which is great.

hmm i hadnt thought about the vivid colour schemes..
im tempted to wait a bit longer to see what comes out in the next wave of tablets, though im unsure the price of the current best bunch is going to fall by much.

If cost is not a concern, (i guess there isn't a large varience in price anyways), I would advise the galaxy. It is in general just a bit more refined than the xoom. But if you want the hdmi, standard USB, slightly better cameras and more dev work, you can't go wrong with the xoom...

Galaxy Tab 10.1 or 8.9?

Hi guys, I was wondering which screen size is optimal for the GT - the 10.1 or 8.9?
I intend to use my tablet for content creation (docs etc) as much as content consumption. So would the extra 1.2 screen real estate make much of a difference?
Which one do you personally prefer and what are the reasons (easier to hold, more portable etc)? Thanks

The portability isnt much different since neither can fit in your pocket.
I like the bigger screen, its a more optimal tablet size in my opinion. (It's been said by others to be the "perfect size for a tablet")
The dev work for the 10.1 is MUCH greater (ROMs, Apps, Support).

I haven't had a play around with a 8.9 but 10.1 will be much cheaper. And I read tons of uni research fairly easily on my 10.1
But then the 8.9 might have voice/dialer features. I much prefer 10.1 screen to the sony tablets smaller screen.

After seeing the 8.9 at Best Buy, I purchased the 10.1.
1.2" might seem negligible but IMO you'd enjoy more on the bigger screen (aside from the theoretically better screen quality of the 8.9).

lol i had two tabs open, one with the 10.1 16gb wifi model and one with the 8.9 3g 16gb model. you guys convinced me to go for the 10.1 (plus the fact that its 200 bucks cheaper here lol). bought it, cant wait to receive it now. thanks!

The 8.9 is actually cheaper, but not by much. As for the dialer, that remains to be seen. Video and articles from May said it was going to have a dialer but people that just bought them say it's either not present or inactive. Other than screen size and location of the speakers, the internals are the same between the two. I played with a 8.9 and own a 10.1. I liked the feel of the 8.9 but I like the bigger screen on the 10.1 as I use it a lot for video, surfing, and reading. I've been waiting for a 10.1 3G from the UK for over a month. They're receiving stock on Monday and it'll ship out the same day. All the 32GB & 64GB 3G's have been pushed back for over a month in the UK and units are just now being received from Samsung. They'll have the latest firmware. It'll be intersting to see if any updates were made that impact the dialer (or anything else for that matter).

Oh I thought it would sellat a higher price. I think I read somewhere there was going to be a ridiculous markup especially for the UK (me). Regarding dialer update, I tend not to hold my breathe for manufacturer updates. But i would not mind being pleasantly surprised.

I've had my 8.9 since Wednesday and I must say I am enjoying it better than I thought I would. Had the 10.1 Toshiba Thrive and returned it after a few days. Browser seemed alot slower on it and had a tendency to "hiccup" when scrolling. The textured back of the Thrive I feel in love with due to its easy grip, however after holding the device for an extended period because if its size began to feel very heavy and brick like. My Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 feels great, not to mention its easier for me to type than on a 10.1 screen. The additional 1.2 of real estate may not seem alot however for me anyhow it makes all the difference when typing.

I actually replaced my 10.1 for 8.9, i like the 8.9 size, easier to hold in bed and on sofa and i think easier to type on with two thumps.... Portability was the main reason....

Same here, I like the feel of the 8.9, can hold with one hand and not tire. I also own the Acer 10.1 and compared to size, 8.9 is great.

I just bought the 8.9 and I am delighted to 10.1 and me too much (the taste and color) I do not regret my choice at all

i just got rid of the 10.1 to replace it with 8.9 but i'm going to wait for the 7.7 instead

I just got an 8.9 Friday. I held it at Best Buy and fell in love. I didn't need it at all since it became my 6th tablet (I have a problem, I know.); but I was so floored by holding it, I could not resist. I think how special this form factor is somewhat lost on people who don't own 10 inch tablets. I was completely dismissive of this product from looking at pictures and seeing it was not much smaller than the 10.1, but then I held it. The first thing that came to mind was Jobs' comment that the reduction in weight and thickness made the iPad 2 a categorically different experience from the original. I have an original iPad and have held many iPad 2's and never felt that way about them. I feel that way about the 8.9 in comparison to the other tablets I have.
My recommendation to anyone thinking about this product is to go hold one for at least 15-30 minutes. Change orientation a few times. Type on the keyboard in portrait orientation. If you plan on using your tablet on a surface with a keyboard case or dock, then get the 10.1. If you plan on holding the tablet on the couch or in bed, get the 8.9. It disappoints me that so many bloggers/journalists are treating tablets like flat screen TVs in price/size discussions but don't go into the nuanced discussion that even exists when choosing a TV size (room size, viewing distance, wall mount vs stand).
We'll see what the 7.7 brings to the discussion, but right now 8.9 is my favorite for holding. I use my original 7 as my phone so I don't really consider it part of the tablet discussion and the Galaxy Note seems better suited for phone duty. I don't think 7 is a compelling consumption or creation size unless you have the need to always have the device on your person.

I feel the exact same way. Thanks for the great review of this device. I fell in love with mine the moment I held it. It just feels right in the hands. With my Toshiba Thrive 10.1 (which I promptly returned to Best Buy), it got tiresome after a little while of holding it. The 8.9 is an awesome tablet as-is, but I know as soon as we get a dedicated forum and some of the most awesomeness and dedicated devs to take their time and crank out some of the hottest ROMS this Tab will become even better.
And you hit it dead on with the similarities to flat screens I myself have noticed how some have compared tablets to TVs. There's just no comparison because I sure as heck aint gonna hold my 42" flat screen in my hand and compare it to a tab...LOL.

I purchased the 10.1 too, but I sometimes feel it was heavy.

Since I like to get more for my money (about $64 an inch) I chose the 10.1.
All jokes aside, I want the biggest screen I can get. It doesn't make any sense that smartphones are making screens bigger yet we want our tablet screens to get smaller. The 7.7 Tab just sounds ridiculous when compared to getting the GTab 10.1.

Having had time using both, I ultimately went for the 8.9 3G. I can confirm for sure that does NOT have a GSM dialer (present inside root, but not active to the user). That said, it's not that big of an issue for me. Pairing up GroveIP with my Google voice works just fine for the odd tablet based phone call. Besides that, the 8.9 teamed up with my trusty SGS2 makes for a pretty fearsome combo on-the-go.
As for th 8.9 itself, it just feels better to hold in my opinion. It has a much more solid construction and premium feel. Browsing the web in portrait is such a joy, especially when thumb-typing is made just that little bit easier. Speaking of which, this whole post was typed up on my 8.9
The rubberized back of the 8.9 is awesome btw.
I will admitted that I was very tempted to wait for the 7.7 and/or the Note, but for now, I'm very happy with my 8.9/SGS2 duo.

My galaxy tab 10.1 from Egypt has black rubbrized back also . and you are right it is much more better than the shiny cheap white back

Is it really worth it over the 7 plus?

I´ve been thinking about getting a tablet lately but I cannot make up my mind about getting either the 7 Plus or the 7.7. I can get the 7 Plus here in Brazil for around us$400 and the 7.7 for us$750 (almost DOUBLE the price!). I know the super amoled screen must be an incredible joy to watch movies but is the screen on the 7 Plus bad? I used to have the Atrix and I hated how faded the screen looked when watching movies when compared to the GSI amoled screen. I now have a GSII and the screen is just perfect.
Other than the screen is there really anything else that can justify the price difference? I mean, the 7.7 has a little bit more memory and a little bit more battery time. I´m having a hard time paying almost double the price just for the amoled benefit.

Well, for that price difference it's not worth it IMO. However, the screen size and quality is definitely a plus for the 7.7. You would say it's only .7", but it makes a pretty big difference.
And think about it: are you really going to watch that many movies on a tablet? I have the 7.7 and am very happy with it, but I think the 7 plus does the job as well for less cash. At the time I got mine there weren't any decent options in the 7-8" range in Romania, but if I had to buy it now, I would think twice.

I have a 7 plus I will probably sell. For me:
1. The increased screen size and resolution really makes it worthwhile
2. Having integrated LTE was just too good for me to pass on.

By itself, the 7.0+ is certainly a great little device that you can get for a reasonable price now.
But, compared to the 7.7 the screen on the 7.0+ just suuuuuucks. It makes a huge difference in user experience.

The resolution is what sold me on the 7.7. Coming from an N7000 I was not willing to go back to a lower resolution plus I remember hating the Gtab 7 1.0's resolution for web browsing back when I had one.

I tried the 7 Plus for about two weeks. I liked it, it did what I needed, but switching between that and my Galaxy Nexus really made the screen quality show. I also hated that when I downloaded apps they would most always be set to the phone app vs tablet because of the screen resolution. Changing the density didn't fix this at all. After trying a second time with a Tab 2 this passed Sunday, I gave up and ponied up for the 7.7. I can say i'm happy, even with paying nearly 3 times as much as I had for the 7 Plus or Tab 2.

First of all if you are looking for 7+ then I suggest you wait a bit until Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 announced. Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is a step down version of 7+, but you really want to compare it before making your decision.
Nevertheless, if budget is not your major concern then go for 7.7. It worths every penny you spent.

There is a huge difference, battery and screen are the biggest. It is best to go to Fastshop and see for yourself. They already have the hard cover at the online store.

Tab 2 7 is already out. I've already bought and returned one from Best Buy. The 7 Plus feels better in hand IMO. ICS is obviously nice.

It mainly depends on your use case. Where I live, the prices are even worse and the difference is even more marked, yet I went for the 7.7 instead of the 7 plus.
The screens made a difference for me as I use it to rate my photography and the 7 plus simply does not do the same job as the 7.7 when it comes to color and tone accuracy. The 7 plus is not bad, but it's nowhere near close.

The 1280*800 resolution on the 7.7 compared to the 1024*600 on the 7 Plus makes a huge difference. The original Galaxy Tab 7 had a screen resolution of 1024*600 and I would not buy anything with that resolution now. Also, the 7.7 uses Super Amoled Plus which is another great advantage. If you can afford it go for the 7.7.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I think I will wait for a while and see what the market has to offer. With all the quad core devices out there I feel that maybe the 7.7 is a bit overpriced (specially when compared to the yet to be launched Toshiba 7.7 tablet...which is a quad core with a super amoled screen...plus a mini usb port).

I had the 7+ for about 3 days and took it back and picked up the 7.7 for about $125 more. Well worth the upgrade for that price, but nearly twice the cost, I doubt I'd do it.

Resolution (1280x800), Super Amoled screen, 5100mAh battery (last long!), lighter in weight (eventho it is bigger!), Faster processor (1.4MHz) and so on.

Absolutely worth it, that extra resolution on Super Amoled Plus is sex for my eyes. I had the original GT, the Tab Plus, and when i got this to try out due to having LTE I couldn't bring myself to send it back.
I guess it's a different story if you are budget limited.

This tablet is freakin' awesome. Its fast, great battery life, gorgeous screen. Honeycomb is the only drawback

I got my Asus TF700T yesterday. Im gonna sell it & buy a Note 10.1

I am a Note II owner and love the phone. Then I really felt like buying an Android tablet. I went and got me Asus Transformer Infinity yesterday & boy Do I regret!! I just put an ad to sell it 100$ off price just to get rid of it & get a Note 10.1 !
Here's what pissed me off. Its a ***** to get the bootloader unlocked. You gotta use Asus unlocker tool & their servers dont respond. its been 48 hrs almost and still no luck.
Theres like only 1 or 2 costume roms available for it and for that this needs to be unlocked.
What pissed me off most that it had only 1gig ram. I thought since it was pricier then a Note 10.1 then its probably at least the same specs.
And damn is it laggy! I guess it could be the ICS' fault and that the JB for it will be smoother but right now it cant be compared to smoothnes of my Note phone at all!
The charger connector is also not standard mini usb which sux and the keyboard for it is too pricey!
One thing I was really looking for was to play Tegra 3 games on it & of the 5 games I tried only 1 was not buggy!
anyways... from what Ive seen from the Note 10.1 dev forum it looks just as promising as my NoteII.
so if anyone here thinks I am making a mistake or something I missed plz let me know.
donno why I even bothered buying this. I was so happy with my Note2. It would have been logical to get another galaxy product!
It was an expensive lesson I even ordered a screen protector for it which costs 30bux inc shipping!

I think you're making the right decision, but....
You should know that the Note 10.1 also doesn't use a mini-usb plug. It's also proprietary.

Don't waste your money.
The Note 10.1 didn't have ANY ROMs out when I bought mine,
and technically there still isn't any official JB for my N8013.
I would wait.
The Note 10.1 is not perfect, no tab is. Based on your post,
you seem to be a hasty kinda buyer cuz you seem to not
research your purchases beforehand. Keep in mind:
The Note 10.1 also has a proprietary non-standard charger/connector.
The few available docks if you want one are rare and pricey as well.
The TF700 has a far better display (by ppi)
The Note 10.1 is not tegra 3 but exynos quad.
Samsung is NOTORIOUS for taking forever to push updates

That's a bit of an overstatement?
No one is saying the Note 10.1 is perfect.
Well, about the lag, the Note 10.1 doesn't lag at all - yes, I'm not saying this just because I own one, it's because it doesn't lag at all.
It's fast and fluid, and with the correct use, it will blaze at an amazing speed.
It has already many custom ROM's available and it's hack-friendly. Samsung releases the open-source very often for their devices.
Oh, and about the updates, Samsung was actually quick to bring in Jelly Bean. It makes your Note 10.1 be twice as fast (in some cases).
You can also have a plethora of keyboards (non-OEM) that are cheap, and some even turn to be covers as well.
All in all, it's a pretty nice buy, but if the non-standard charger/connector is a no-GO, then it's a don't buy this. This tab uses the proprietary connector.

+1 on that add also the multiwindow option /svoice /airview /front stereo speakers and n8000 model can do gsm calls and allot more, i used note II for like a week before buying note 10.1 and personally i think spen on 10.1 is some what more senstive and more ergonomic, something to note also the spen can work as a mouse in web browser to review links, etc and scroll

I got my Note last Friday and can say that I love it. The quad core and 2GB of RAM keeps it fast and responsive, something I can't say about my first gen Android tablet that this replaces. I'''ll upgrade my Android phone next year once I see which LTE may come to my area; however, I know it will have similar specs to the Note.

Here's what pissed me off. Its a ***** to get the bootloader unlocked. You gotta use Asus unlocker tool & their servers dont respond. its been 48 hrs almost and still no luck.
Theres like only 1 or 2 costume roms available for it and for that this needs to be unlocked.
What pissed me off most that it had only 1gig ram. I thought since it was pricier then a Note 10.1 then its probably at least the same specs.
And damn is it laggy! I guess it could be the ICS' fault and that the JB for it will be smoother but right now it cant be compared to smoothnes of my Note phone at all!
The charger connector is also not standard mini usb which sux and the keyboard for it is too pricey!
One thing I was really looking for was to play Tegra 3 games on it & of the 5 games I tried only 1 was not buggy!
anyways... from what Ive seen from the Note 10.1 dev forum it looks just as promising as my NoteII.
so if anyone here thinks I am making a mistake or something I missed plz let me know.
donno why I even bothered buying this. I was so happy with my Note2. It would have been logical to get another galaxy product!

I'm done with ASUS, too...
TF700 has a superb display, and thats about it...mine was laggy,too. OTA wouldn't work, so i did an unlock using ASUS's unlock-tool, tried to update with TWRP and downloaded update.zip - would't work either but kept the tablet in a bootloop. ASUS of course refuses warranty because unlock, tries to charge me repaircosts 90% of a brandnew device - come on guys, kidding??? Sold the keyboard, bought the note 8010, fast and smooth with root and Team Union Jelly Bean...an expensive lesson for me, too...

I'm not bashing the Note. I have the phone and the tab as well and love both.
I'm commenting on the op's qualms about the choice he made, which he regrets.
All I'm saying is the op obviously didn't do any research before buying. Some of the
stuff he hates about the Asus TF are also present with the Note. Which means he
is still making the same mistake of not researching.
The reason I said he should keep it is cuz he seems to be guilt-tripping over a perfectly
good purchase. That and he's going to sell his perfectly good tab and be out $100 bucks
because of it.
And you're making a point of there being cheaper docks for the Note 10.1.
Cheaper dock options are also available for the TF700.
And no, the note does NOT have LOTS of ROMs but dev is heading there. On that subject
I was saying that if he waits, dev will get better for the TF.There are ~20 custom ROMs
on xda for the TF700 and less than ten for the Note 10.1. Two or three for the WiFi only devices.
I still also maintain that Samsung drags its feet when it comes to updates.
The TF had JB since October. As of writing this there still is no JB for the N8013, no
leak, no official. Asus is in fact known for their frequent updates.
The tab has quality control issues as I well. I had to return the first one I bought since
the screen was defective. If you read up, this very forum will confirm that I was not alone
in this. Some report lag with the software. Asus is well known for having poor quality
control though.
With all that said, I considered both tabs when buying, did my research and bought the
Note. I love the one I have now and don't regret it at all. It is amazingly good despite any reviews
saying this or that is better.

I've had both and the Note is a better choice (for me at least). A lot less lag and more options. I have the OG note for my phone and have it running stock android. I much prefer touchwiz on the 10.1. Multi window is awesome and I actually use the IR blaster a lot more than I thought I would. Lots of cool features that vanilla android doesn't offer. I vote Note

Others are trying to keep up his work but picture "Otto Pilot" from the movie Airplane. Asus has done little or no marketing for the TF700 and it's just sort of floating out there. Asus’ Q3 sales of 10.1" tablets was actually down year-over-year.
Here's my elevator conversation summary of the three most talked about Android tablets:
Note 10.1 - It's the most complete tablet available (any OS) and has unique features like multiview, inking via a Wacom digitizer with palm rejection, S-Note, and a slew of Samsung developed features not available elsewhere that make it a joy to use. It's powerful, has JB (kind of), has great sounding front mounted speakers, gets above average battery life, and has a great display with decent (for Samsung) color accuracy, good contrast, and is nicely bright. There are two downsides and they apply mostly to consumption-only buyers. The 720P display isn't as good on text and computer generated graphics as higher PPI tablets and all the things that make the Note great at creation and productivity add a lot of complexity for people that aren't going to use those features. The N10 is a great consumption device for the price. And that's about it.​

It has no 5GHz Wi-Fi, uses single channel memory (the Note and N10 are dual channel), has 1GB of RAM, has IO issues that Asus has made famous, and is built using outdated components that, in a lot of cases, are from second-tier manufacturers (EG: AzureWave Wi-Fi radios). Asus' QC is dreadful, their repair center in TX horrible, and to unlock the bootloader you agree to completely void your warranty. There are a couple of things that are unique and, IMHO, the only reason people should be looking at a TF700. They are: the keyboard which also extends battery life, expandable storage, and the Super IPS display that makes it great for outdoor use. Someone only looking for PPI is better off with a N10.​
So, as someone above said, no tablet's perfect. Of the three, I think living with the Note's perfectly acceptable but lower PPI display involves the least amount of compromise. For someone wanting/needing a higher PPI the N10's a decent choice and a good value. For someone who has to have a keyboard and/or higher PPI and expandable storage there's the TF700. But based on it and Asus' history, declining sales, and price, you're probably better off leaving Android and buying a W8 tablet.

I would really like your opinion on why you think the n8013 in the US has not seen the JB update and why there seems to be not even a peep about it. All promotion of the note 10.1 happens only on the Samsung Mobile International Facebook Page, including the big Christmas vid, but not word about the 10.1 on the Samsung Mobile USA page. It is like the product vanished.

Because HTC, Motorola, and Samsung all suck at managing device updates. Before I got my N2 two weeks ago I was using a Teg3 One X. In an official press release with quotes from their CEO HTC said the Teg3 One X JB roll-out was going to be in October. Taiwan (HTC's home country) got a JB update in October that was so bad the roll out was stopped for the rest of the world. It started again two weeks ago and only five regions out of over a dozen have received it. In between, regional HTC offices have been providing inaccurate and conflicting updates on what the JB schedule really is.
Back to Samsung. Having nothing to do with updates Samsung's s/w management process is a cluster f-k. A single device can have over twenty four "current" versions of s/w running on it because Samsung creates unique s/w for each region a device is sold in. A good example is that while rolling out JB to the N8000 they were still releasing 4.0.4 ROMs in certain regions of the world. So there are newer ICS ROMs than there are JB. HTC rolls out a single version of "current" s/w that all of their devices globally (except specific Asian markets) get updated to within the span of a few weeks. So HTC's managing two versions (global and Asia) of s/w per device while Samsung's managing dozens. And the complexity this creates makes Samsung's update process overly complex and difficult for us on the outside to track and make sense of.
So, the short answer to your question of "where's the N8013's JB update?," is that it's stuck somewhere in Samsung's plumbing waiting to be deployed. It's fun to talk about reasons for delays like patent issues and the like but I really think it’s just Samsung being Samsung. The OG 8.9 on AT&T just got ICS last week after the rest of the world received it in August. Go figure.
The upside is that Samsung's s/w is versatile for end-users to manage with Odin so that when a newer ROM comes out for a different region you can just use that with no repercussions. My Brazilian N2 is running a Panamanian ROM and my also Brazilian Note 10.1 is running a British ROM. At some point soon either someone on XDA or Samfirmware is going to post a complete MD5 file for the N8010. Once that happens every 8010/3 user can update to it using Odin without the current complexity of loading a new ROM followed by using recovery to update it to JB from SD. Look at it this way; at least we have some options. The poor folks waiting on HTC and Motorola just have to wait.
This is kind of old but makes the point of how complex Samsung's s/w managment process is. This is a list of ROMs deployed just for the N8000. Kind of scary.

Compatibility
Portability
Which are two sides of the same coin. You must use Samsung's connector
which limits your options for peripherals, unless you get an adapter. Even
then the lack of a separate HDMI port and the fact that you can't charge via
your PC's USB port (not enough current) are annoying. And you can't use your
devices chargers which means one more charger to carry around.

small price to pay for the dogs bollocks of android tabs, I have been putting off buying waiting for decent specs with micro sd, bought a nexus 7 & took it back next day, felt like cheap plastic crap! I would love to see a review for the note 10.1 based on a price of £268 which is what I paid after cashback, im sure it would get editor's choice awards across the board!

You can charge on a PC's USB... Just reeeeeeeeeally slowly.... Best to leave overnight to charge in this instance, but I have been using it before and charging at the same time...

False, I got a Samsung original desktop dock (stand, charge and audio out) for € 20 (in Italy) and it works with practically all of the Samsung 7" and 10" tablet lines.

False, Asus has been one of the best ones for their tablet line but Samsung is not bad at all when you compare it with all of the others and has actually been pretty good with their smartphones.
I run the official JB on my Note 10.1 3G and should get the official JB update on my OG Note very soon.
What he should keep in mind is:
- the Note 10.1 has 2GB RAM (a killer spec for how I use it)
- MultiWindow
- the 3G version is one of the handful of 10" tablets in the world (all of them Samsung AFAIK) that have full GSM call and message capabilities (another killer spec for me)
- it has the S-Pen (I don't use it all that often but when I need it it's VERY useful)
- very good and loud stereo audio
- Touchwiz and Samsung added SW, services and personalizations
- I don't know how it would do with games (I don't have a single one installed on my mobile devices) but on everything else the quad-core Exynos is the fastest and smoothest Android tablet I have ever seen.
- very good battery life
- one of the very best non-HD displays
- light and with a PLASTIC back (I HATE metal bodies!!!!)
- it has an IR blaster and you can use it as a smart remote

On the fence about getting the new Note 10.1 2014 Edition

I am in love with this tablet. It checks on pretty much everything that I'm looking for. But one thing is holding me back from jumping the gun on October 10..... the price.
550 for a 16gb and 600 for a 32gb sounds like a no brainer. But I feel that it's a no small pocket change to drop on a tablet. I know the screen is crazy good and the s pen makes it head and shoulders over what's currently available. But I keep on trying to justify the reasoning for the 600 price tag.
I believe the thing that I keep going back to is the lack of tablet optimized apps for Android. Don't get me wrong, I've been pro android since the htc hd2, and I been through my share of samsung devices (got the note 2, 1st day it launched) . But I also had the original galaxy tab 10.1 and chose to get it early and paid the premium for it. Then it seemed within less than 4 months, the price dropped and continued to do so. And even though it was great for consuming videos and browsing the web I felt like the majority of the apps just didn't either scaled properly to the 10.1 form factor, or they weren't as polished as the iPad apps are.
I waited last week, to see what Microsoft was going to do with their newly redesigned surface pro 2, but it failed to excite me unlike the new 10.1 note is doing. If I could dual boot jellybean and windows on the surface pro 2, i'd probably look into that.
Maybe things have changed for the better on the tablet side for Android apps. But i ultimately ended up giving the tablet to my grandfather so he could Skype his grandkids and watch football. I just want to see what you guys's reasons were for being excited and early adopters and paying the premium price for early adoption.

Well for some, myself included, this is a luxury item and think the slight increase in price from last years model isn't that bad. For your money you would be buying the best tablet available (imo) and it will be quite the beast for your daily consumption, and it will also last for years. Its really a laptop without the keyboard that has much better battery life and is more portable in the scheme of things. I'm not a laptop person and rather a tablet for the things I want to do.Since Android is taking tablets serious these days its gotten and will be much better in the future since its proving to not be a niche item any longer. I'm really anxious to start seeing reviews in the next week or so in the meanwhile..... I guess you have some deciding to do and I just wanted to chime in.

I too am not a laptop person. I was taken back a little bit by the price when it was announced. I was hoping for the 32GB to be around $550. For me the extra $50 is ok for all the extras it comes with. But really what it boils down to is how much I use my current tablet.
My current tablet is the HP Touchpad with Cyanogenmod Android ICS installed. I am a desktop fanatic and was completely blown away by how much time I shifted from my desktop to the tablet. I am a news junkie and a Reddit.com reader so I get tons of use out of a device that is, in my opinion, perfectly set up for internet consumption.
All in all, I love the 10 inch tablet form factor and use it for hours every day so I feel the price is justified for me.

I really am liking the extra features that Samsung has added on top of Android, such as being able to run two apps side by side. After having the last two Transformers (Prime and Infinity) and having a ton of issues with their performance, this is will be the best premium tablet on the market, and that comes with a price. Sure you can get a laptop for that price, but if a tablet fits your needs better, it'll be hard to top this tablet. If you need to save some money, wait for the next Nexus device. If this tablet isnt in your budget, don't feel pressured to get the device. It is better to be straight financially than to stress over a luxury item.

i think even if the S-pen is bad, as long as that technology is in the tablet, you can use something like the bamboo FEEL by wacom to supplement the S-pen usage

This a premium product, it's going to be priced accordingly. I was honestly expecting $700, it's coming in under my expectations. This is a steal at this price.

Just make sure you get a microSD card, as the note, and most phones and tablets in general, only have a microSD slot, not a full SD card slot.

I think that is a little high priced by mabe $50 bucks. I have owned dozens of android tablets since version 1.5 and I have a nexus 7 2013 edition. I am looking forward to this one would have liked at least 64gb. I also have an ipad 4 that is the 128gb version it was $799 plus $99 insurance plus $40 case plus tax = about a grand. I love the apps on ios but i know you can do more on android. I would like to see android tablet apps like iOS apps and 128gb and up android tablets to be able to install lots of apps on as apps are only instalable on internal memory. I know I overpaid for my ipad but I don't think the price would be far off with a comparable memory spec android tablet.

Thats why there are different specifications and different price points... To serve the masses..

if you dont use the spen much id recommend something like the lg tablet coming out. Great size and specs with way less cost. Lots of tablets to fit almost any price range exist.

The lg g pad should be released soon and has an 8.9 inch screen, sd 600, and magnificent screen and ppi, and much cheaper. The new kindle is also 8.9 inch screen, sd 800, awesome screen and ppi, and much cheaper. The coming nexus 10 will have great specs and a 10 inch screen and will be cheaper. The tf701 infinity will be out soon and has a 10 inch screen, tegra 4 a d gorgeous screen res and ppi and will be cheaper. Those are the most popular. There are others you can google.

At the rate ASUS is going they will not be releasing the new infinity until 2014. Joking aside....I hear rumors its pushed back to mid-November though...something must be wrong. I'm not going to wait any longer for ASUS.

Where did you get price info for the tf701?? Because the tf700, at least at launch, was priced on par with the note 10, and that price didn't include the keyboard **** either, which case about $150 or so more.

I was researching and following the new Transformer tf701 for a bit and I think the consensus was that it would be $399 for just the tablet and $499 with dock for the base model but I'm not 100% on that and I think its unofficial...I could be wrong though

I have not heard pricing myself, didn't think pricing or availability had been said yet, at least not in any of the major news outlets or Asus website.

this price is on par for what i paid for my TF700 tho, so i'd believe it.
