The new 8.9" Samsung tab Vs. the 7" Galaxy Tab

From today's announcement, it looks like the 8.9" tab looks very thin and probably light.
Since most people here thought the Xoom size is too big and the 7" is more portable, what do you think of the 8.9"
Would the 8.9" be able to fit the jacket's pocket to be portable?
Would you prefer 8.9" over the 7" ?
Not only that, it will probably have honeycomb.
We will know for sure on March 22.

looking forward to seeing it in person. Hopefully the price can compete with the ipad, otherwise I'm not going to purchase it.

8.9 will be the perfect traveling Tab for me...I have 7's and one 10inch Tablet right now, and the 10 is just a bit too big for my needs, 7 too small.

That's the problem with technology, there is always something better.
You buy something today and tomorrow something more advanced comes out.

I like the 7 inch for reading.

New is not always better.
I've always had this mindset that 7 inches is the perfect size for a tablet. Maybe its because of my small Asian hands, but I fibd the 10-inch tablets too wide. I can't comment nor speculate anything about the 8.9-inch Tab because I haven't laid my hands on it yet, though.

I sold my Galaxy Tab and I miss it dearly. The 10" form factor has always seemed too big. I thought I was going to buy something new right away but I have not. :-(
In regard to the 8.9", at least the LG-Slate is no better than a 10" tablet (in size). Check out a video comparison between it an the Xoom. They are almost the same size. The Slate just has a whole lot more bezel and smaller screen.
I went to Best Buy last night to possibly pick up a HTC Flyer, but I did not see anything significant enough about it to justify the inflated price. Cool device, though.
That said, I may be on the lookout for another Tab here locally! The Tab did everything that I needed fairly well. I think I got caught up in the hype of everything new that was coming out.
As someone stated, new isn't always better.

Apparently the 8.9 tab will have a stock phone with in the firmware. Has anyone seen anymore demo's of it since the original promo. When will it be available in the USA. From what I saw for the frequencies, it looks likes the ATT world will be the candidate.

For me it depends if it will be Samsung's Exynos or Tegra2. If it's tegra2 I'm not touching that with any length of pole. I need my Tab to play media flawlessly and the current 7" does so. Tegra2 has some issues with certain media types and encodings, specifically mkv HP, which a lot of my stuff is currently in.

So far, I am very happy with the 7in. Seems to be perfect size for me. I'm not sure an 8.9 would fit well. It would be nice if the 8.9 is thinner and just as light tho.

The 7" is just small enough I can stick it in my back pocket. Or a coat pocket. Anything bigger I will lose that. I wouldn't mind the G-Tab to be thinner and lighter though. I won't be in the market for a 8.9" tablet. I'd rather jump up to the ~10" if I lose the portability.

Tab 8.9 vs Tab 10.1

I couldn't find any posts that went into detail regarding the differences between the 8.9 and the 10.1.
Am I right in thinking the only difference between the two are the screen size? Obviously, this brings the following implicit differences:
8.9 is lighter
8.9 is smaller (although thickness is the same)
8.9 has a higher pixel density (because screen resolutions are the same).
8.9 being lighter and smaller means it is more portable
8.9 is probably cheaper (this is my guess)
The on-board memory options for both may be different (e.g. the 8.9 may not come in a 64GB option where as the 10.1 may eventually have this option).
Apart from availability of the 10.1 will be sooner than the 8.9, I'm not sure what the benefit is for me to get the 10.1.
I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts?

Size matters (insert joke). Everything else will likely remain the same. get 8.9 if you want something a little more portable, or if you have small hands..
If you want something truly diffrent, wait for the second gen 7" rumored to run Exynos.

You are pretty much correct with all that, but if you are in North America, you're most likely to have 10.1 with Vanilla honeycomb, and also that when 8.9 launches - it will be pre installed with touchWiz, Apparently where I live - both 10.1 and 8.9 will be with touch wiz preinstalled !

Yes - And owning a 10.1 I have to say, having a "vanilla" OS is the way to go. Very clean and simple. Honestly, I when I first saw the 10.1, I thought it was a little small lol; the idea of (that much) less screen real-estate doesn't seem fathomable =) [the lack of TouchWiz was a big selling point for me]
Unless you can do without the extra screen size, I'd go with a 10.1 -if you really don't care about screen size, follow the other gentleman's advice and with the new 7" when it comes out.

Isn't the 8.9 supposed to come out with a thicker screen that's less bright? That was the rumor a few weeks ago. Apparently the manufacturers are having a hard time with the 8.9 screen size and might have to use a thicker, heavier screen.

It's not clear how Samsung plans on handling this. They are having trouble with the yields for the screens on the 8.9, which would seem to indicate that some tablets will get the same screen as the 10.1 while others will get the thicker, less bright screens. It will probably vary by market.
I decided to get a 10.1 after the issues with the 8.9 screens were reported. I could deal with a thicker tablet - after all, the screens themselves are 40% thicker - but how much of the thickness of the total tablet is the actual screen? I would imagine even with the "lesser" screen the 8.9 would come in at under 10mm easily, so no big deal to me. But the 40% reduction is brightness is a big deal to me. That would take it's impact on the battery life, so thanks but no thanks!

WiFi antennas and heat?
I read some where that the 8.9 has only 1 WiFi antenna vs the 10.1 that supposedly has 2...
Don't if that's true and if we will notice much a difference (I suppose we will).
The other thing that would only be speculation on my part, is that maybe the 8.9 could run a little hotter by having less space to dissipate heat?
Any ideas about this?

I'm happy with my screen size. Neitherone is all that portable to be walking around town on a regular basis.
I'd rather have more screen realestate since I'm mostly using it primarily at home.
7" is the way to go for portability, in my opinion.

I think he has a point. Samsung is taking a long time to get the 8.9 out. I'm sure they're not pleased about this either, however if they take too much longer, then the 8.9 will be competing against the first crop of quad-core Kal-El powered tablets, not to mention the other faster dual core solutions. I don't have any performance issues with the Tegra 2 in my day to day use, but the fact remains that it's not exactly a screamer. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 (and presumably the 8.9) compares favorably when the competition is pretty much just comprised of other Tegra 2 equipped devices, however things won't be so pretty when the competition is leaving the Galaxy Tab in the dust.
However, who knows what the first Kal-El tablets will look like - they may be shoddy and rushed to market for the Holiday season. I just wish Samsung had used something other than the Tegra 2.

I disagree. Vanilla OS means no DLNA support, no various video codec support. I want TW for nothing but DLNA (AllShare) and various video codecs that my current Samsung Galaxy S phone already supports, including DIVX. Not to mention the email client (with exchange support) Samsung was able to pack into the Galaxy S phones is 1000% better than Google ever shipped.

The 8.9 tab doesn't fit your pocket, so the argument of portability is relative.

The size of pockets is also relative. It sure does fit in that guy's suit pocket when Samsung Demoed 8.9 in CTIA.

[Q] Purchasing Advice Needed

hi all,
im after some of your advice as to the best tablet, im going to ask in the Transformer and Galaxy forums as well, but id like your opinions on what is the best tablet to buy, obviously you guys are using the Xoom already, and are happily modding the hell out of them, so you may have experience with the others as well.
i am trying to find somewhere which has all 3 which i can look at side by side, but in the UK im pretty much left with Pc world/Currys.. so i thought id do the next best thing and talk to people who have/use them.
i have narrowed my choices to;
Motorola Xoom,
Asus Transformer
Samsung Galaxy 10.1
if possible can you let me know what your experiences are like with any of them.

There are already quite a few threads in General and in Q&A touching on the comparsion between these tablets. There's been pretty frank discussion of pros and cons, but as you'd expect on a Xoom forum, most passionate cooments were pro-Xoom. Check them out...you will need to go back a few pages in both sections, but it makes for some lively reading.
Good luck with your decision-making process (but buy the Xoom!)

The Xoom is quite heavy so if you want to hold it with one hand for a minute or two, it isn't the right tablet. It's built really durable but the weight factor is a big con for me. It also has really good specs, just look at reviews on youtube on the tablets. Also, make sure you see all your options! Many of these tablets are getting a price reduction via coupon so find them first so you save a hundred or two.

The Xoom isn't the heaviest tab, but it is the best built. Those others incorporate a lot of plastic and flex a lot if squeezed. There are some issues with all of them, some are related to build quality/quality control, and others are more subjective.

I purchased my Xoom from best buy 2 weeks ago at the time of purchase I had a play on the Asus and Acer. I chose the XOOM on the back of the better build quality and feel. Yes it is that little bit heavier but it feels better. I also thought about the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 to match it with my Galaxy SII phone but the lack of an sd slot was a big let down for me. Since then Google have purchased part of Motorola which should mean that the Xoom should be supported for a long time to come.

I've had my Xoom since Feb 24th at 11:12 a.m. & it's hands down the best to me.I love it.I played with the Samsung 10.1 in the store a few weeks ago & wasn't impressed.All it was was thinner..The screen on it didn't blow me away as some people in the 10.1 forum suggests.Me & my Xoom have been thru a lot together

Just come through the same problem as you and narrowed it down to the xoom, for build and expansion and the galaxy tab, for screen and light wieght.
The deciding factor was the price, pc world now do the xoom for £329 wifi or £400 for 3g. I couldnt turn down an offer like that and havent looked back since yes the xoom is a little heavy but I like that! And the screen is fine too, not as bright as the galaxy tab or as vivid colours but long as your not comparing them back to back you'll never notice it tbh.

I think the Xoom's colors are more natural, if more subdued. I had a chance to compare my Xoom vs. a Galaxy Tab 10.1 yesterday and the GTab's screen is certainly vivid! Very good for some things (movies, games), but as an artist, I like to see my work and others' work in a more natural color palette. YMMV.

Very true and feel the same myself and was the same reason I went for the desire HD rather than the gallaxy s but some people see bright and think its better, its all down to personal taste I suppose

Definitely the xoom. Its built better then other tabs and has some great support as well.
I couldn't be happier.
The sound beats all other tabs and the display may not be as bright but its ultra responsive. The transformer had a nice responsive screen as well but build quality was subpar.
Like others said before this tablet has a subdued color palette which is great.

hmm i hadnt thought about the vivid colour schemes..
im tempted to wait a bit longer to see what comes out in the next wave of tablets, though im unsure the price of the current best bunch is going to fall by much.

If cost is not a concern, (i guess there isn't a large varience in price anyways), I would advise the galaxy. It is in general just a bit more refined than the xoom. But if you want the hdmi, standard USB, slightly better cameras and more dev work, you can't go wrong with the xoom...

For those of you like me who have recently picked up the 7.0 plus... What are your thoughts on this? I am happy with my 7+ but the 7.7 is what I was originally waiting for.

Like you I was strongly attracted to the 7.7 when I was in the market to buy. At that time, no word when/if we'd get it here. And imports were $600 and up. Bought the Gt 7+ and have not looked back since.
Gotta say yes, the larger screen (not by much ), AMOLED quality (very nice) and slightly faster processor makes a very attractive package.
But....
Our community here is growing (not light speed but still), we have root and CWM (thanks gary9d), more than a few recognized devs are following here and there are a selection of cases/sleeves with more on the way.
Who is to say the aftermarket accessories manufacturers will embrace SO MANY different "flavors" of GTab (7.0, 7.0+, 7.7, 8.9, 10.1 and perhaps an 11.0?) I'm doubtful myself.

Most likely I am staying with my GTab 7+. But YMMV

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but there are quite a few more upgrades on the 7.7 over the 7.0 Plus. Bigger battery (5100mAh vs 4000mAh), thinner, lighter, 64GB option, and as you mentioned better display all around - Super AMOLED Plus, higher resolution at 1280 x 800, and larger at 7.7 inches. The only sacrifice really is that it's ever so slightly taller and wider in dimensions, and probably will cost a bit more. I wouldn't underestimate the number of people holding out for the 7.7, I think the dev community will be strong, and I suspect it will have support for CyanogenMod 9.
Although as with all electronics something better will always be just around the corner, as rumors are swirling of a Galaxy Tab 8.3 in the works (Super AMOLED Plus, quad core 1.5GHz, Ice Cream Sandwich), so if you decide to stick with the 7.0 Plus no one is stopping you from enjoying it to the fullest!

You're right, thanks! I forgot about the battery.
Quite right that there's always "something better" just around the corner. If one were to wait for the next best thing, one would never get anything I suspect. As long as whatever you gets does what you want, it's all good.
It's can be a crap-shoot on community support. Samsung devices have the reputation for quality hence usually a good following. That said, I believe that people who gravitate to forums like this tend to be more tech-centric than the majority of tab users. I do wonder though as I read several articles (trades and users) praising the 7+ but somewhat negative mentions about the price. I am curious just how high Android tabs will be able to fetch. Granted, it's my belief that even the $499 iPad is over priced by at least $100 but I wonder if the $400 price point might be the "sweet spot" for full-featured tabs regardless of size? I'm not a "gamer" so my power needs are modest.
This is my first Samsung tab and I am impressed. But so many screen size choices? Price and not so much screen size/features, I suspect, will drive many sales. Witness B&N and Amazon. I confess I am sure I'll be comparing at BB the 7.7 and other screens when it hits!

Well we still don't know what the official prices are going to be, the sites that are offering pre-orders are pretty much just making up their own prices. I have heard however the official price in Australia will be $579 for the 16GB and $649 for the 32GB, and that's in AUD. Looking at the iPad 2 prices in AUD they are almost identical, and we don't know if these prices are for the WiFi or 3G/4G model, but I would suspect the 7.7 will be between $450-500 for the 16GB WiFi model in the US.

Can't wait to see it and compare it with my 7+. Size is my main concern, 7.7 is quite long and wider. If a device is too big, I cant really bring it out whenever I like. Not So useful and convenient like 7 inch tablet too. I once had a larger tablet and I almost left it everyday at my home, sold it at last. Anyway, 7.7 is worth waiting.

Hi. Im new to this part of xda. And this is somewhat bothersome news as I just bought my plus today. First tablet in some time that made me think wow. I have an ipad now. Owned the Transformer and Dell Streak 5 and 7. I was going to wait until spring.g to see the new XOOM, ipad3, and TF Prime but decided after seeing this I thought this could last awhile before going down in price.

I don't think the upgrades from the 7.7 are worth it.
It will be really disappointing if we never get any good roms... But I'm mostly happy with root as it is.

Anyone who wants to sell The Galaxy Tab 7.7 can write me an PM! But I want it this year in Germany I would Pay 1000 Euros Cash!!!

I am very attracted to the 7.7 personally. Have an 8.9 that I'm planning on selling very soon. (Tegra 2 just plain sucks compared to Exynos frankly), and though it's a nice form factor, it's not for me. No phone calling ability is a big downer too; I like being able to swap my SIM card between my original Tab and phone depending on the situation.
Have the Note too, but not sure if I will keep it or not. Waiting to see what ICS will be like on it. Could be amazing, or could just be "meh." If it's not that much better, may sell my Note too and just stick to an SGS2/7.7 combo.
Then again, CES is right around the corner, so maybe it may be worth waiting longer still depending on what else may be coming out for 2012!

My main reason for buying the 7+ is because it's quite versatile. I don't want to be lugging around a phone, tablet and laptop with me along with their respective accessories and chargers all day so I opted to buy the 7+. This means I can use my ultraportable for serious computing (negating the need to carry the charger), and the tablet for all my communication needs plus some light gaming, reading or browsing.
So it doesn't have the largest battery, or the best resolution, or the latest and greatest processor; but, it's got a large enough screen to comfortably read eBooks, browse the interwebs, and pretty much everything else. It's got decent enough performance (better than decent, actually) to handle all the apps I want + sd card expansion. And most importantly (for me), it doubles as a phone.
I know I look silly when I take calls on it, but I'm okay with that. Like the famous philosopher Jagger once said 'you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you get what you need'.
I love the 8.9 and initially wanted to get that, but in the end telephone capabilities and sd card expansion won out over a larger,more gorgeous screen.

Do you have a non wifi version? I got my 7+ yesterday and cant find a dialer on it

I am pickinmg my 7.7 wifi up tomorrow from **** Smith in Australia - can't wait, been wanting a tablet for ages. I had originally ordered a Transformer Prime until Amazon canceled the order. But this is the tablet I really wanted.

I don't know. I mean, I was planing to get the 7+ near the end of this month. I know that the screen and whatnot is better or the 7.7, but I seriously don't know if I would like the better screen or use the maybe bit more charge from it having a bigger battery to spend $200 more then what I was planing on spending.

I'm afraid that 7.7 might still have the Black stains/blotches on the screen, just like in S II. When viewing on dark room.

So no specific release date or price? If its not much more in price than the 7 plus and coming out fairly soon id like to return mine and wait for the 7.7

Never been a fan of the smaller tabs, my GNEX fills that void nicely. Waiting for the new 10.1 Note.

I for one find comparing 10" screen tablets with 7" ones simply absurd..
You either need a 10" screen or a 7" one.
I myself think that 10" is the bare minimum size for a "general purpose" tablet's display, ideally I would want a bigger one if it wasn't heavier and had the same battery runtime. 7" is good only as an e-book reader.

Tab 10.1 is a great device.

Keeping it because I really do want a 10" screen.... And ordered a Nexus 7 too. I'm not sure about the 7" size, in some ways it will bother me for sure, but in other ways it may turn out to be more useful, lighter, more pocketable, I guess I will find out in a few weeks. My tab 10.1 has gotten super laggy, while my galaxy nexus has worked really, really, really well, so for a couple of hundred, I'm willing to try something new. I know I could flash a custom rom, maybe one of these days I will, but I need the camera to function for video calls, so I haven't looked into it much.

Personally I'll keep my tablet until it dies.

Maybe selling mine. The Tab is awesome and there's no doubt the xda peeps will get Jelly bean on it soon. But the Nexus 7 format factor is just right for me. Like the Kindle Fire I always wanted.

Soon going to be a owner of both. Once i get the nexus I'll let you know. People in the 7 inch forums keep saying you don't know what the 7 inch is for until you use it so i have high hopes.

Count me in on getting both. I've had my GT10 for about 9 months now, but during that time I had a Nook Color, and just in the last three weeks I got a Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Both are great devices, and both are now on craigslist.
I agree with the post above that comparing 7" and 10" tablets is ridiculous. They serve different purposes. But I will point out that many people are making the same point that they don't need a 7" device because it's halfway between a phone and a 10". That's silly and based on the fact that 10" has become a standard for tablets simply because that was the screens that the factories could build. But think about it: 7" is the most obvious size for a truly portable tablet: It fits in a pocket. 10" is not actually that great a size. It's too small for productivity and too large to take with you without a bag (unless you hold it in your hand the whole time). If I could have my way, I'd have a 3.5-4" phone, a 7" tablet (though I'd love to have less bezel since you can hold it in one hand with just the edges), and a 12-15" tablet with a docking station for productivity.
Don't get me wrong; I love my GT10, but once bigger tablets become the norm I'll gladly drop it (and my laptop) in favor of a true laptop replacement. One device for communication; one for entertainment, and one for productivity (and probably entertainment too!).

That's why both markets exist; whereas some would rather have the smaller size that it's pocketable others such as myself have no problems carrying the larger tablets in hand wherever we go.
I'm strongly considering getting one simply for the fact that it has ICS on it at a dirt cheap price, but I still see no permanent replacement for my Verizon LTE GT 10.1. Until there is another 10 inch tablet with ICS on it and a faster processor on Verizon LTE I'm sticking with my tab and its dated 3.2 OS.

Like Natalie Imbruglia, I'm torn. I went from the original Galaxy Tab 7" to the 10.1" and thought I could never go back to a 7" tablet after that, but it is a really nice bit of kit.
Two phrases spring to mind. Horses for courses, and swings and roundabouts.

I have just bought the 16gb nexus 7. I plan to use it in conjunction with my tab 10.1. Like for college I will use the 10.1 to type down notes as my hand writing is appalling but I can touch type fast on the tablet. I will also use the 10.1 for college text books (there all free on the college web site) which need a big screen. I will then use the nexus 7 for more gaming, lite reading and lite video watching. As some games just look better on a bigger than the 4.8inch screen on my s3, but playing games on the tab 10.1 is uncomfortable as it is too big for it, not to mention the 10.1's crappy GPU Also, I used the archos 70it for a year, which is a 7 inch tab, so I do like the 7 inch form factor although I do like the 10.1 inch screen as well

Well, for those saying they are going to carry it around: why don't you get a phone-enabled 7" tablet and carry only one device then?
I would do it myself and in fact I tried for a couple of days the original Galaxy Tab 7" but it was unfortunately just a tad too big for the fanny packs I always use... Half an inch smaller and that would have been my "smartphone" (BTW, since 7 months I am the enthusiastic owner of a Galaxy Note and I am hoping that the next iteration will have a bigger screen).
So, I still maintain that 7" tablets are useless but as ebook readers.
Or maybe it's just that I like to keep and carry around as few devices as possible (for example, iPods-like music players are worse than useless, to me, I keep all the music and videos I want on my Note and it also has FM radio and internet radio).
P.S. when I am out and about I use the Note as I would the Galaxy Tab 10.1" at home but of course once at home it's G.Tab only (unless, of course, I am using the phone capabilities or I need some data on the Note). The smaller screen (and that was the case also with the Galaxy Tab 7") is simply too limiting. Even as an ebook reader (one of the main uses I have for the G.Tab) screen real estate is a plus (and that was also one of the main reasons to choose the G.Tab, it was and still is one of the lighest 10" tablets around, possibly THE lighest).

I havent decided just yet. If I do decide to buy one I have a feeling that I would be using the tab 10.1 at home and the n7 while out to read books and browsing the web and what not.
Although if I find myself using the N7 more often then yea ill probably sell the tab 10.1 and at the least it should cover the cost of the tablet.

I'm getting the Nexus 7 and selling my GTab 10.1. I rather have an android tablet that is more open and more quick to get upgrades. I have an ipad 3rd gen, so I don't need another large screen tablet.

My old nook color was my intro to tablets but the screen was just too small. Immediately after getting the 10.1 I was never you g back to anything smaller.

Same here. My nook color has been collecting dust for the past year. Works fine as an e-reader but feels cramped for web browsing.
Media playback on a 7-inch tablet would be fine for me though but here again with the lack of microSD and HDMI support the Nexus 7 falls short of what's needed. Sacrifices have to be made for the price point . . obviously the Nexus 7 is meant to compete with the nook tablet and kindle fire. It does well there with the quad core processor and higher resolution screen. Too bad . . I'd pay a bit more to get a microSD card slot in that thing (or be willing to pay $250 for the 8gb model w/ uSD).
