Just picked up my M earlier...
Tempted to try Motofail or Matt's utility, but don't want to screw anything up. Anybody with any advice?
Congratualtions on your purchase..
How is the audio quality on it? No one mentioned it anywhere. Is it good in the earphones? Can you post any first impressions/ detailed review?
Sorry for the off topic
It's pretty much exactly what I expected, so far anyway. Most of the reviews I've read on it so far have been pretty accurate. Solid build, good sound (haven't used any headphones yet, but the speaker sounds great), good signal/call quality, mediocre camera (good when well lit, but typical Moto when not well lit). Even though it has the same screen as the Razr/Maxx, the S4 and new gpu definitely make a difference in the feel and animations - very smooth and snappy. It was between this and the S3 for me. I have a Nexus 7, so I didn't feel a huge phone was necessary any more.

Are those root utilities? Been awhile since I owned a Motorola device.

Motofail was drjbliss's root utility for the Bionic.
Matt's Utility was mattlgroff's utility for the Razr / Razr Maxx. Did a lot more than just root... a LOT.
A word to the wise for those want to root and mod this phone and future Motorola devices.
All of the Motorolas since the Droid 3 have been rooted by one person, djrbliss and he has stated that he will not be doing this any longer.
If you want to be certain of the ability to root and modify your phone and flash custom software, you should purchase the developer edition.

I think the launch time could have been better. Everyone is focused on the iPhone launch now. I think for people that want an android phone on Verizon, most people will still go with the Galaxy S3. Larger phones have been the trend for the past few years. It's nice to see a high performance device like RAZR M available for people who want something in smaller form factor.
It would be great to see this community on XDA grow and I think it will in time. Hopefully root comes at some point too. The phone is brand new. Not everyone is willing to be an early adopter unless they're buying from Apple or Samsung.

I'd venture to guess that VZW will sell a crapload of these Razr Ms. People will walk into a Verizon store, play with the phone, find out how fast it is, are blown away by the price, and tell the guy or gal to wrap it up. Hotcakes, I tell you.

The problem lies with what was previously stated. Most people are trending to bigger devices/screens (I don't know why personaly, but I also don't see how people think the Nokia smartphones are "sexy" either...guess I am out of touch). I laugh at a co-worker daily about his Note. It looks like he is smuggling a clipboard in his pocket and when he makes a call, it reminds me of movies from the mid 80's and the massive cells from that era. The GS3 even makes the M look like a dwarf. I wouldn't want to go back to a 3.5" screen, but a 4.8"-5.5" screen on a phone is rediculous IMO. To each his own, but I don't think the M will blow up the sales charts as basicaly a mid-range spec'd, non-HD, niche market phone. On that note, I love my M, lol.

But you also have to consider that before the M, there weren't really any good small Android phones. Manufacturers are convinced that bigger is better, so they keep putting the good specs in giant phones. Motorola has finally tapped the market that existed all along...people who want small phones that perform just as well as the Roid Rage phones. It's quite possible that a lot of people picked up bigger phones because they had no other option, other than the iPhone.
Additionally, his phone hasn't even been available in stores for 2 days, and it's already dropped to $50 on Amazon. At this rate, it will be free by Christmas, and people always love free. As long as Verizon doesn't stuff it in a corner underneath some cobwebs, I see this phone flying off the shelves.

Count me in as one that wanted good specs in a smaller phone. I've been sitting on an upgrade for my Incredible since the beginning of the year. The trend towards huge phones really had me disheartened. If I didn't see the Razr M, I probably would've gotten a iPhone 4s.
My Razr M arrives Monday. Can't wait.
I have a Galaxy S3 but I wanted to share a tip for anyone looking to unlock the bootloader....Samsung was supposed to release a Developer Edition Galaxy S3, but they never did....When the bootloader still hadnt been unlock they were saying it was completely possible to take the unlocked bootloader from the developer edition(if it had existed) and port it to the Locked S3...so if someone does happen to buy the Developer edition, they should look into helping out the rest of the Razr M community

That would be nice, and if something like that existed, we wouldn't have to use the Motorola tool, so they wouldn't know that we unlocked it. We might just be able to go back to the locked one before sending the phone in for service.

Just make sure your Android SDK tools are updated to 4.1 and that your your device drivers are up to date. Also helps to plug the phone in, after the moto software is installed, while it's in debugging mode once. It will install some diff drivers for that mode. you should have no problem unlocking.
To get the phone ready to get the code, just power it down. Hold both volume +/- keys down and then the power button. Use the down volume key to select AP Fastboot. Then volume up, once, to select it. Now, connect the usb connector and go to c:\Android-sdk-Windows\tools in a cmd console. Type what the site advises and go from there (- the $'s).

And, I have to add... Those who use the Atrix HD as an example that this thing will be hard pressed to be rooted...we will have unlocked bootloaders out there. That means someone can find an exploit to at least get us root. Unlocking the bootloader is probably not going to happen. It's hardware locked. I would love a root exploit, though.
So I went into the Verizon store today with my ancient Droid 2. I had used the McGyver fix to get the phone to charge while in bootloader but short-circuited the darned battery charging port. So after making sure a replacement battery wouldn't fix it, we looked at upgrades. I was torn between the Droid RAZR M, Droid RAZR Maxx, or the Samsung Galaxy III. After a lot of consideration and bantering with the salesman, and looking into my bank account, I went with the Droid RAZR M.
All I can say is I couldn't believe how outdated my Droid 2 was. I might actually start using my phone again! I'm curious as to what apps, themes, launchers, you other folks are using. I'm just happy to have the stock ICS at this point, but I saw the screenshot thread and there were some pretty cool ideas. I never really got into themes before but I might now, so if you could share your knowledge, that'd be great.

Hello,
I got the regular (Droid) RAZR XT910 from Rogers and now they're offering me a deal to upgrade to a new phone for (nearly) free.
So far, i'm loving my XT910 even if Moto broke my heart back then after releasing the MAXX since my biggest pet peeve is the battery life... but other than that (and the "ok" screen) it's a great phone! nice and thin, the way i like it.
But few months ago RAZR HD is out and it seems to fix everything I loath from XT910... and I was drooling over it. But now? Not so sure.
So would anyone recommend for or against me upgrading to RAZR HD at this point of the year? Or anyone can recommend another phone? (no, we don't get RAZR HD MAXX here in Canada)(but we do have Galaxy SIII...)(..or iPhone5)
Thanks!
You love the razr ? your really love the razr hd !
Samsung Galaxy S3 is a great device.... but call quality and RF ( signal ) is not good as the RAZR HD ...
Galaxy S3 have many roms ... Razr HD is limited for the moment ... but Razr HD have the bootloader unlocked !
Galaxy S3 if you use the stock rom have touchwiz ... i really don't like !

It's always good if you can wait... I have been in same situation and finally decided to get the Razr HD. Technology is always evolving.. and trust me whatever phone you buy, it will be outdated in few months. So imo.. Go check Razr HD in the store.. if you really like it.. go for it.
Thanks! Last question, is the Rogers version has jelly Bean yet?

Hey Buddy,
I helped out in the RAZR forum for a while... I'm still helping out there of course but I totally recommend the RAZR HD. This is a very nice phone and the battery life is amazing. Coming from a Droid 4 (which had the same size battery as a RAZR OG) this battery lasts me an entire day with what I consider abuse (excess usage), yesterday I really killed it (spent time in a movie theatre and a comedy club, where there is 0 signal) and I still ended up down to around 19%.
The UI is great, and the phone is much smoother than any OMAP processor devices I've ever used.
Saying that, you might want to wait I always change my phones like once a year anyways; but this is the first phone that I've purchased (on Rogers) since I've went Android, and the HD interface is really beautiful. The Jelly Bean upgrade is just around the corner, I think it will be dropping later this month according to Rogers, and I have a feeling there will be a much larger development community built here since the bootloader is a straightforward unlock, which means I might not jump ship on the entire device once Moto stops making updates for it.
If I could change one thing in the phone, it would be the amount of memory as I would have thrown in 2GB RAM, to ensure it can run the next version of Android, but either way this phone is awesome.
My sincere apologies if this breaks the rules of this community, but I'm stuck between three cell phones and I'm having troubles making a decision.
If you had to choose between these three smartphones, which one would it be? ANd please do explain your reasoning.
DROID MAXX)
HTC ONE (m7
LG G2
I would appreciate no bias. Thanks in advance.

How can you ask which one I would like and then say no bias. Its all bias. I like moto due to build quality and vanilla android also timely updates. HTC is horrible with updates. LG I have never owned one but both the m7 and g2 are heavily skinned that is not for me.

Well, since you are in the Droid Ultra (including Mini and Maxx) forum, the answer will probably universally "get the Maxx". Seriously, those were the same three choices last January when I got my Maxx.
is the battery life the most important one for you ? --> get the maxx
better build quality and feel ? --> get the htc one
lg g2 ? idk benefits of it sry, never had this device in my hands.
yes i would say get the maxx, but if you want better specs then you should go with the htc one or lg g2.
one problem of the g2 is, that it has a closed bootloader and it cant be unlocked, like the droid maxx (except the developer edition which costs more).
the htc one should be able to be bootloader unlocked, as long as htc didnt change their bootloader policy.
do you want to flash or stay at stock ?
stock:
lg g2 with a heavily customized android
htc one heavily customized
maxx nearly stock android
flashing/modding:
lg g2 locked bootloader, so big problems for flashing
htc one possible unlockable (at least the retail device without a carrier branding, but idk, as i am not in the usa and only buying retail phones)
maxx unlock possible only on dev edition (or older 2013 devices with a chinese guy)
I love the battery life of my Maxx, but it's noticeably more sluggish than my Nexus 7 tablet, which suggests its probably noticeably more sluggish than the M7 or G2.
The M7 is a great looking phone. HTC has been doing better lately with updates. The M7 on Verizon got the Sense 6 update ( with Android v.4.4.2) back in May. And, as far as custom skins go, Sense is actually pretty good. If you're not set on a near-stock experience, you might be really happy with Sense. My biggest concern with the One was battery life. The M7's battery life isn't anywhere near as good as the Maxx. The M8, on the other hand, is a big improvement over the M7 in terms of battery life. I'd be awfully tempted to get that one now, although I'd be even happier with a Google Play Edition M8 (if it worked on Verizon).
I'm not a big fan of the design (build quality or button placement) of the G2, or the OEM skin, but the hardware and battery life are nice.
I do understand the criticism here concerning my decision to ask this question here. The reason I did so however is because I also decided to go for the MAXX, and that is the phone I have right now.
Stupidly though, I decided to update to Android 4.4 and now am stuck without the ability to root the phone - at least for the time being.
I can't help but wonder though if I made the right choice. I still have time to go back and exchange it with a 35 dollars restocking fee. I compared it to with the LG G2, and the specs completely outperform the MAXX in every aspect. Even its battery is at the same league as the MAXX"s.
Does anybody else feel this way?
PS: Yes, I did lie when I said I have trouble making decision. I already did make the decision, it's just that now I'm feeling like I made a bad one.
i'll take the Lg G2
because, it has a relative good battery (3000mah) against the 3500 mah of Droid Maxx and 2300 mah of HTC one m7
Better processor than Droid Maxx and same as M7
Better camera than M7 and Droid Maxx
Bigger Screen than Droid Maxx and M7
Good design compared to Droid maxx and M7
Overall its better than the other two.
I made my choice for four main reasons - battery life ,vanilla android, build quality , and timely updates. The lg g2 is one of the most fragile heavily skinned phones in existence. If you look at it wrong (figuratively speaking) it can break. My girl has one , and she's been through four of them already. The HTC is not the way to go ... Any HTC I've had has never seen a timely update ever.

I'll second ChrisMaxx. I had an LG G2 for 3 months. It does have great specs. But I had to request a new unit due to MMS issues. Also, I missed (almost) stock Android. So I switched to the Droid Maxx, and couldn't be happier. I've found battery life to be much better on the Maxx than on the LG G2. Last, LG isn't good with timely software updates.

I would take the Droid MAXX anytime against G2 or M7. Cant compare the MAXX, an industrial piece of gagdet against some cheap ****.
The Maxx isn't about the specs... They're good enough. The Maxx is about the cool Motorola exclusive features like Touchless Controls, Trusted Bluetooth Devices, Active Notifications.
Last night I told my phone to set an alarm. I was across the room 8 feet away, the phone was screen off and I never had to touch it. There's no other phone you can do that with right now.

I have both the Maxx and G2. I'd get the G2 over the Maxx but with the G3 out, that should also be considered. You can't go wrong with either the Maxx or G2.The Maxx is for work and the G2 is personal. I only use the Maxx for work email when I'm home and tethering when I travel and get 3 days per charge when I'm not traveling. I day per charge when I do travel. My G2 gets 2 days per charge with light to moderate use and more widgets. I like the skin on the G2 and extra features it has. My previous personal phone was a SGS3 and my previous work phone was a SGS4. I've not regretted replacing either.

Had the g2, and the Maxx is better in every way aside from the camera. Obviously my opinion, but the vanilla experience with gravity box is just awesome. I get signal in places no other phone I've ever had would. Plus, my g2 had weird quirks and inconsistencies. This Maxx is just really usable, and I know for sure I won't spend hours tweaking trying to get to near stock android because I'm already there.

nothing worse than a promising device , the moto x has a brilliant screen , I like how it feels , the size is just too small and the boot loader issue is a game breaker , I tried the chinaman , no luck and I dont blame Motorola , i dont even have att , but they wont unlock the bl~
Great devs in here no less , this was first (and last Motorola device) , was usually sticking with Samsung , but I dont like the idea of the Dev phones or the gpe phones ,so I bought a OnePlus One ! The OPO rocks in every category and I am not a slave the carriers and there bs (i have straight talk anyway) , but unlocked is the only way to go!!!
Ill be cleaning out my moto x and [probably selling on craigslist )

Got that Griffin dock? If so i will buy it
Cya! I bought a Droid Maxx after playing around with the wife's Moto X. I was looking at everything from LG G3 to iPhone 6 but none had Active Display and Touchless Control. Her Moto X was unlocked using Sunshine, mine is still locked but I'm running 4.4 so I can unlock anytime I want. For me, functionality trumps benchmarks. The Moto X's battery life is impressive, she doesn't charge her phone for days at a time. I'm a much heavier user and my Maxx has plenty of juice left at the end of the day. Motorola has impressed me a lot under the ownership of Google. The Assist software is also very cool. The new Moto X and Maxx/ Turbo looks great but I need an unlocked boot loader and I don't know when that will happen on the new machines. Hence, I scratched the new Moto X off my shopping list. Also read that the battery life is laughable, even though it is still decent when strictly on LTE and is actually a little better than the 2013 Moto X.
Enjoy your new phone. However, imagine if everyone made a thread like this after they changed phones? It would be swamped with these threads burying useful information.
