[Q] Pretty happy upgrade - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I went into the Verizon store today with my ancient Droid 2. I had used the McGyver fix to get the phone to charge while in bootloader but short-circuited the darned battery charging port. So after making sure a replacement battery wouldn't fix it, we looked at upgrades. I was torn between the Droid RAZR M, Droid RAZR Maxx, or the Samsung Galaxy III. After a lot of consideration and bantering with the salesman, and looking into my bank account, I went with the Droid RAZR M.
All I can say is I couldn't believe how outdated my Droid 2 was. I might actually start using my phone again! I'm curious as to what apps, themes, launchers, you other folks are using. I'm just happy to have the stock ICS at this point, but I saw the screenshot thread and there were some pretty cool ideas. I never really got into themes before but I might now, so if you could share your knowledge, that'd be great.

Apex and Nova are the most popular launchers these days. I use Nova personally but both are good.

Coming over from AT&T and the Samsung Captivate

What a joke Samsung and AT&T are so I walked over to VZW and snagged a Droid X. With the Captivate, I was on [ROM] Axura 2.1 (Froyo) with Setirons 1.4.3 Kernel and loved it, but what is the tits rom for the Droid X?
Everyone has their own opinion, but the popular ROMs seem to be: gummyJAR, ApeX, Tranquility, RubiX, and Fission. Check out the Development Forum to see what all is being worked on.
I personally like ApeX, but I am considering trying gummyJAR after hearing so many good things.

Battery = Better So Far
Screen = Larger, not AMOLED, but very nice w/ Gorilla Glass!
GPS = DEAD ON ACCURATE today on the way home!
Speed = Stock X is comparable to my Cappy on a FAST ROM.
Overall = I am MUCH happier with the Droid X...............MUCH!
I'm using DarkSlide personally, and I am quite happy with it. The latest versions are based on the new 340 OTA, so make sure you are on that before removing any bloat or installing a custom ROM, as VZW checks for certain bloat before offering the OTA.
Motorola has an encrypted bootloader on the DX, so there are no custom kernels available yet. But as you already noticed, the X is faster while stock than some phones tweaked to the max.

I love my droid x way more than any of the other 4 smart phones that I've owned. However, if I were you (or your dad), I would wait a minute because, as you may already know, some really sweet LTE phones are due to be released in the near future (perhaps february if the various tech blogs are accurate). For example, the htc thunderbolt looks sick. It looks like a couple are going to be officially announced at CES next week
to late lol we got the droid
I got my DX for $49 at wirefly.com ..best customer service too ..I had got the D2G originally but it got too hot at times..so I mention it on their facebook and was surprise to get a call from "corporate" the next day offering a exchange for the DX and credit for the difference.
Cons: well it's not really one. You have keep the phone for at 6 months without downgrading or lower the cost of the plan. Also you can't move to another device until after 6mths ..worth it IMO.
and if you use my link we both get credit for $25.
EDIT: looks like they have the DX for $19 with free activation...im jealous.
Did the same move (captivate to Droid X). My only and I mean only grip with the Droid X is the fact it can't play MKV. files. The Captivate played that with the stock player, no issues. I've bought just about every player on the market and it still doesnt' play those files.

I can play MKV files on the latest RockPlayer. But they get choppy if they are too large.

(Q) droid x or ....?

I'm with Verizon. Currently have the iPhone. Its garbage and wanting the droid x. I was just wondering what is the best phone with Verizon right now?
I'm in my 14 day trial so I'm debating on what phone I want.
I would suggest droidX if you are ok with touch keyboard, or droid 2, if you prefer physical keyboard. If you wait a couple of months, the droid X2 is due in the second quarter. I personally use droid x and it keeps me quiet merry. Large screen, great camera, fast enough and on and on...

The X is a great phone! It offers a bunch of great customization and a great team of developers that work on it. If you want to be able to TRULY run a custom ROM (custom kernel such as Cyanogen Mod) then the X may not be the phone for you at this time. Devs are still working on unlocking/bypassing the bootloader.
HTC generally makes some good unlocked phones as well. Not to dissuade you from the X, as I personally have one and love it.
1+ on both reviews. Coming from the Eris and 2 weeks now, very pleased. Haven't felt the need to root. (Waiting for cyanogen)
Just discovered its car dock/multimedia dock as another nice feature.
Good luck.

Having had all the iPhones, which I dumped after trying out Android last year... and having/tried/using MANY others I have not been happier with my X... It has the screen I want, built like a tank even with all that glass, speed is great, battery life is VERY impressive (Added the OEM EB), and it is just a solid device inside and out.
Yes, the "modding" is limited and I really thought I was going to miss that because I enjoy testing, creating, etc.... but it really hasn't bother me, my only need for it was to add functionality that I couldn't get, but thanks to Bootstrap and multiple tweaks and mods, I am perfectly happy.
My opinion... You won't regret the switch.
Yup its an excellent phone. With 4g coming around, there will be many more choices with better features. Theyll also come with a bigger price tag and more expensive plans. For now the x is plenty for me.
After having had both Droid X and 2... go with the X. You wont be disappointed!

The Droid X I don't think will disappoint. I like mine a lot. If you are shopping for phones you might want the Fascinate as well.
maybe wait a little while and go with the thunderbolt? im done with motorola because i want to make sure that the bootloader wont be locked beyond what is necessary anymore.

RAZR buying or not?

Hey guys, i think about buying me a new phone with a dual core, because i think that this is the minimum configuration of a smartphone today (At the moment i have an optimus black).
Can you still recommend the RAZR (and why) or would you prefer other lowpriced (older) smartphones like the Nexus oder the Galaxy S2.
Thanks
I have a Galaxy Nexus and my girlfriend just got the Razr HD Maxx (Major upgrade from her Droid 2), and it really depends on what you are into. The device is amazingly snappy (Even more than my fully rooted, ROM'd, custom kernel Galaxy Nexus), and the radios are much stronger than my Galaxy Nexus (A lot of times she will have 4G in buildings where I only have 1 or 2 bars of 3G). Also, the 3300 Mah battery is insane, it literally is a full day phone, usually she has 45% at the end of the day (She uses it a lot for pinterest, facebook, all that girly stuff). But, the main problem is that it does not have stock Android, and probably won't for a while. If that bothers you then go with the Galaxy Nexus otherwise this is definitely a great phone to have.

Motorola is the only company that came out and said they wanted to be stock Android, but the carriers request the skins. That wins points in my books, and in all honesty it still looks closer to aosp than any other phone out there.
It all depends on what your looking for op. If you want great battery and build then this phone will be perfect. If you need the best camera or a removable battery, you might want to look elsewhere.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2
Looked at getting it for a while, but decided on the SGS3 since it had a great camera and a removable battery.
I'm in the same boat. I like the razr because its as close to stock android you can get without being a nexus phone. Build quality and battery also look great. The one thing I'm concerned about is all the restrictions moto puts on their phone and the bloatware I'll have to remove once I root it.

Razr is a good phone i have tried it out and it works really well
Thanks
Bought the HD dev and waiting for it to arrive. Can't beat moto build quality and radio. Root is already available so you can freeze all the bloat easily. Aside from waiting for the quad core phones to arrive I think this is right with (if not above) the sgIII.

I'm strongly considering the MAXX HD. the general reviews seem good, the guts seem fine... a few complaints about the software/bloatware, but that's why I come to XDA. If the MAXX HD will get a root/recovery/ROM situation that supports AOKP or CM10 or whatever... that's the key. The phone's preload would be immediately lobotomized upon delivery and I'd set up with a rooted ROM as I'm accustomed to!
So, I'll be intently watching all the threads in the Razr HD section (presumably which covers the new MAXX HD as well :silly: )
Glad this section of the forum is up and running. I will likely be switching from Sprint to Verizon soon and this phone is exactly what I want. I'm on the Sprint Galaxy S2 right now but really want to give a Moto phone a shot over a S3. I can't wait to read some more opinions in the next few weeks.
Just picked one up yesterday was kind of nervous being that I was coming from the fiasco that was Motorolas Droid 3 but I now have no regrets. Wifi is kinda choppy but not bad. They will probably fix it in the future

Just ordered two from Simplexity online today. One HD - white for my wife and one Maxx HD for myself. They all got shipped out today and expect to arrive tomorrow afternoon. It is much better deal than local Verizon store and Costco. Cost me under $300 for two without tax.
I cannot recommend the maxx enough. I'll take a huge sealed battery over a small removable battery any day. GS3 is nice hardware but I just can't get over the cheap feel and bloated UI of Samsung phones. A Ferrari engine in a Hyundai is still a Hyundai. I wanted the Ferrari design as well.

Paid $650 outright for my Maxx HD, I feel it was well spent. (Paid retail to keep my grandfathered unlimited data)
Coming from a Droid 2, the reception seems inferior, but it's hard to say at this point. Don't plan to return, but it will take another week or two to fully evaluate.
I've been away from my native north jersey at a conference in CA (4G everywhere, etc). Battery life is simply stunning, and responsiveness on ICS is amazing. Was running CM9 on my D2 and this is a huge step up. When you throw in the beautiful design, nice screen, and 4G capability, it's hard to find any reason not to buy this phone.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned anywhere (maybe it's fairly standard these days?): this phone has, or feels like it has, an LRA (linear resonant actuator) rather than your standard rotational vibrator. Haptic feedback feels excellent!
I'd strongly recommend this phone for anyone looking to buy or upgrade.

Got my new Maxx HD. Love it! Activated!
I went and checked this out at Verizon today and was VERY surprised of how much I liked it!
The big knock for me was the 4.7 in screen making the phone way to big....My OG Razr Maxx w/ 4.3 in screen is about as big as I want to go...
However, when I compared it to my OG Razr....it was EXACTLY the same size and dimension....The difference was having LESS bezel and MORE screen! It's a good bit smaller the GS3
I did a quick speed test and got 24 MB/S vs 12 MB/s on my OG Razr.....I didnt think I would like the soft button interface but it actually was much different than expected and made navigating and using the phone MUCH easier....and ;ast but not least the whole interface with supper smooth!
Cant afford it atm....but jIm def getting one soon!!
Today I was offered an alternative replacement for my Samsung Galaxy S3 that I finally accepted, which ends up being the Razr HD. My S3 cannot make calls 50% of the time due to a NO SIM error message... and I really just wanted them to fix my phone, but after 1.5 months of making excuses why my phone doesn't work to friends, co-workers, bosses, it was time to move on. I do have a question for you all, does this device have NFC? The Motorola site does not list this as a feature of the phone, but other sites say it does. As a temp resolution Verizon sent me a Galaxy Nexus, which was nice of them. (although I have yet to see a real amazing upgrade over the touchwiz'd ICS on the S3) How are you guys enjoying the motoblur? Worth it to move to a new ROM, or stick with stock?
Thanks, in advance!

Couple of questions

I recently received the 4.1.1 update for my unrooted maxx. The real pisser is foxfi doesn't work now. Another point. The more advanced these operating systems go, the less stable my apps become. Chrome is a pain in the ass to use now. It shuts down or doesn't respond frequently. I don't have high speed internet where I live. I can't get high speed. Sucks. So, our phones are our high speed access. Wife has the razr, I have the razr maxx. I'm looking for a fast smooth rom that will allow foxfi, or have another wireless tether app installed that will work around the unlimited data plan block verizon has laid out. Thanks
Check over in Maxx forum (this is the "M" forum) for better answers, but the entitlement hack should work for you if you are rooted. Just search for it, it should be fairly easy to find for your device. The ROM I am running on my M already has the hack included, but you'll have to hack it yourself if you are running on stock.
Snap. I assumed M stood for maxx. I didn't see a Razr Maxx forum on xda phone list.
Thanks though. I haven't rooted this phone yet. Im going to have to because the lag is getting to be a pain with chrome and a few other apps.

TBH, I think the Maxx stuff on this forum falls under the Razr section. They're pretty much the same phone, anyway. As for the lag, I've read that there have been various issues with this JB update for the Razr. When I purchased my M in the middle of January, it updated to 4.1.1 as soon as I turned it on and activated. It seemed like they got everything right, but I didn't try it out for long. I had the thing rooted with 30 minutes of activation, and had a lot of bloat removed and apps frozen. Now, I'm running Energy ROM and it is a huge difference over stock.

force droid root collaboration?

Are there any devs with this phone that would like to formulate ideas and code to try to root this at the very least? It's too good of a phone to have completely locked down by Verizon. Is there anyway to Port roms onto this like they did the Droid turbo?
there was brief discussion here https://forum.xda-developers.com/z-force/help/root-verizon-t3507253 but nothing came of it.
honestly i think this phone hardly sold vs the samsung galaxy line... so due to the low user-base theres not as much interest. which is a shame b/c it is a really great phone.
Still using my ole Droid Turbo with lollipop. Kinda hoping for a newer Droid we can root.
