I know there was a thread about this before, but I'm having trouble finding it now. I am currently on the rooted MK2 and I finally want to upgrade to the latest. What would the easiest way to go about doing this?

The absolute easiest way for you to upgrade is to download the NAE stock tar from random45's thread in the android development section. Install it with Odin 3.07 or 3.09. Then reroot your phone using the latest cf autoroot. Install the custom rom of your choice, then install the NAE hotspot mod also in the development section. You will not lose any data by upgrading this way. No need to factory reset.

Just for curiosity's sake, would unrooting my phone then upgrading normally actually work? Not that I actually want to do that, was just wondering.

Yes but the NAE tar is the easiest. And it doesn't wipe data but you should back up anything important just in case.

I'm on MF3 right now, but can I use ODIN to go back to AMDL, then root and install a different recovery? It seems that the answer is yes because I saw a thread to download ODIN with AMDL, and that AMDL will allow you to fully root with a custom recovery. Just wanted to confirm before I start down the path of no return. Just want to get the 4.3 Google Edition going on my SGH-1337.
Thanks all.
EDIT: Did some more snooping and other threads saying you cannot use ODIN to go back to AMDL. Ugh. Guess I'll have to wait.
Your post edit is correct.
You have other options. Check out post #2 of the I337 guide in my signature. It covers root and safestrap for your mf3 firmware. Read up though, and don't jump into it without knowledge.
Cheers

I just want to add that you cannot do ANYTHING (other than rooting) at the moment with the MF3. I will promise you that it will totally jack up your device.
Your best off rooting installing exposed and than install wanam exposed app and that will get you the customization of a stock rom with everything you can possibly ask for.

Getting the Status 7 error "/system/xbin/dexdump" has unexpected contents when attempting to manually flash the OTA vía stock recovery. Any one have a fix or files for this? I really don't want to clear the Wife's phone as she has it all set up already. Any help is greatly appreciated.
History:
Had Philz Custom Recovery
Rooted.
On MK2 Stock Firmware W/ Knox.
NOW un rooted with stock recovery.

Sounds like you are not completely stock, the error shows it found modded files in your system partition. Odin the full mk2 tar file first and try again.

I was hoping to avoid doing the full flash again. I have seen some threads of some Nexus 7 members flashing the required files they were so kindly provided so they can move forward to the 4.4.2 update similar to my situation. If I can't then I guess I will have to suck it up and erase her info and start over.

You don't have to erase her info, just flash the mk2 tar file and then install the update. No data wipe required.

Wait dumb question... .. . I take it that the flash won't erase the info due to being an official rom? I mean the one from random45. This has slipped my mind.......

Correct, the tar will not wipe data. Everything will be in tact from random45's download.

I'm not a complete noob,,, Just partially...
Can someone point me to where I can learn how to flash the mk2 tar file and where to find that file...?
I'm have this same issue trying to get KitKat on to my T-Mo S4... Stock... Rooted a few times using the Kingo app on Win 7 - But currently un-rooted.
If I have asked this question in the wrong place, mea culpa.

This forum is for the Sprint Galaxy S4, and it seems you have the T-Mobile device. Here's a link to the tmobile forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile
MK2 is the version number that is specific to Sprint. T-Mobile may have the same number or not. But all you need to do is download the .tar file for the latest 4.3 ROM that is available for your phone, put the phone in download mode, and flash via the ODIN utility that you can download as well. This is not a complete guide, so see the relevant threads in the TM forum. Alternatively, there may be a T-Mobile .tar for 4.4.2 that you can ODIN directly. It is up to you to see if it wipes data or not. The one for Sprint does.
Can someone help me take my S4 back to 4.3? I got the OTA update for 4.4 yesterday morning and have had nothing but problems. Terrible battery life (40% down in 3 hours with little to no use) WiFi wont turn on thanks to this piece of junk Knox software. So before I dump Samsung completely for a Moto X or Nexus, can someone help me downgrade from 4.4 back to 4.3 where I had no problems?
Were you totally stock before the OTA? If you still have warranty left, I would bring it in to a Sprint store and *****.
If not, you can try one of 2 things. 1) flash the NAE tar file using odin to see if that fixes your issues or 2) flash the MK2 tar file to bring you back to 4.3

I went Cyanogen at one point, didn't like it, and flashed back to stock. When the OTA hit I was rooted but had made no changes from stock, not even an uninstall of a Samsung app. I am backing things up now to flash the NAE again, but I want a version without this Knox garbage in it. Is there such thing?
I read that you can't flash back with Odin from 4.4 to 4.3 so I don't know how to do option 2 at this point.

Yeah, I think you are right. Can't go back to 4.3 once you have the 4.4 bootloader, my bad. I wonder if you should do a factory reset to see if that clears up your issues.

Well that sucks that you can't go back to 4.3
I had the same issues when I updated and was kinda pissed at it to but a factory reset and it been running way better ever since and I'm rooted with xposed installed and no complaints

I believe once KNOX Bootloader has been installed, your stuck with it. No going back.
But honestly, if you root 4.4, your gonna void KNOX.

You're saying your bootloader went back to MK2 after this? Didn't think that was possible. I've had nothing but stupid little issues myself after using Odin to flash the phone to NAE. I've done factory resets... Completely wiped the phone in Philz. Tried KToonsez kernel as well and stock NAE just sux! I'll probably just flash Liquid Smooth back on it, was only trying to stick with stock NAE for stability and camera , that phone is my girls and she doesn't have the patience for all the bugs that come with custom Roms lol
Anyways just want to confirm that with you. Thanks

I don't know if that is possible for those of us rocking triband. Obviously we cannot use the Mk2 modem or rom. In any event, I upgraded to 4.4.2 on my new L720T and regretted it, but now I'v" managed to install twrp and rooted it and the rom settled down after a few days. At first, horrible battery use but now its amazing. My battery reads 75 percent after 14 hours and that's quite good enough. The only issue I still face is the SD card thing, but that only seems to apply third party software as I can move files directly from internal to external memory using the stock files app that comes with android.
i dont know about triband. i dont have one and im not going to pretend im a smart dev because thats also not true.. i HAVE ODIN 4.4.2 THEN turned around and ODIN 4.3 due to something i didnt like...im not sure if it changes the bootloader or not, i dont even check. i have only tried this with mk2 to nae.. when i purchesed my device it came with mk2 so i have never tinkerd with the other bootloaders. if you have something other then mk2 id ask a dev befor doing anything. like i said it works for me as long as i flash the modem FIRST that corrisponds to the build. ( mk2 or nae )...and in some cases if the wifi is borked on nae, iv had to flash the modem again after instalation of the rom.. i cant explain why any of this happens....

Lol I know what you mean... Sometimes things just seem to work or they don't.
But that's interesting you can go back to mk2 after being on nae. I figured that was not possible. But if you didn't get any fails in Odin while downgrading that's great. Maybe I'll get ballsy and try this later.

Is there a stock 4.4 Rom out there I can try, preferably one without Knox? Sprint has recommended that I unroot, that they have a tech bulletin where rooted phones have wifi, and other issues.

No that's just what the escalated Tech Support person from Oklahoma City told me.
I also just wiped the cache and did a factory reset and still have the same wifi problem...
How do I update my phone when it's rooted? I have twrp installed and when ever I go to install the latest update, it goes through the process on twrp and then fails. Do I have to unroot my phone to get the latest update?
I really want to update my phone to 4.4 kitkat but I'm not sure if I can or not because I'm rooted. What do you advice I should do?
Other info:
* Carrier: Sprint
* Model number: SPH - L720
* Stock Rom
* I made a backup of my phone as soon as I got home from picking it up from the store.
Please search. This has been answered before when the update first came up. You cannot be on custom recovery to install an ota. You need to be on stock un rooted with stock recovery. Either Odin MK2 tar or NAE which will be equivalent to the OTA with NAE baseband, software, kernel, and bootloader.

Oin will not wipe your phone. And you don't have to factory reset. Just put grab the NAE tar that is available in the development section. And make sure you have Odin and Samsung drivers installed on your computer. Then follow the OP's instructions on how to use the tar.
Just to be safe you should back up any important data since there have been some instances where the phone after using the NAE tar will hang on the sprint splash screen which requires a factory reset. I hope this makes some sense. I'm still half asleep. Lol

Ok, I have been running an OLD version of SACs custom ROM for a while (Pre Kitkat I think).
I am considering going back to stock Rooted with the Hotspot mod only.
I've been out of the "flashing" scene for a while, so what's the easiest way to go back to current stock w/ rooted & hotspot mod? If you could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it!
1. Please don't post questions in the development forum.
2. Find Unknownforce's stock rooted NAE thread.
3. Read and follow his directions.

You'll probably have to Odin the NAE modem as well. Somewhere in unknown's thread are the instructions to do and keep a pre Knox bootloader
Ok, 1 more question...
If I want to go back to complete stock from the old SACS Rom...
Could I just flash a stock MDL to my phone and then tell the phone to update it's self and let it OTA update to current version?
Would there possible be any problems with that?
Just curious as I have an old stock MDL already on my computer from when I was flash long ago.
I know this way I would have KNOX but I honestly don't really care too much.
That will take a bit, but will work for sure.

You should not do this! If you have a newer bootloader than the MDL install will fail. All you need to do is download the full NAE tar file and install it. You will be updated in one step and you won't lose data. you can get the full NAE tar from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663619
