PLEASE tell me there is a way to wifi tether with the GS5 on Verizon.
I have an unlimited plan (yay) and I need to be able to wifi tether as my home has no internet access available.
Please don't just tell me it can't be done because I know I can just downgrade to Jelly Bean and do it, I just don't want to do that if I don't have to. Also I will mention that I am NOT rooted but I am willing to. If you are feeling extra helpful I would appreciate links for a easy root for the Vzw GS5 also as I have only seen ones for other variants.
Thanks and hopefully we can get back to tethering soon!
There is no way to root the Verizon and AT&T versions so far because of the locked bootloader... hopefully someone finds an exploit soon. You can't 'downgrade' or flash anything through Odin at the moment... it will fail signature verification. The only alternative that I know of is the USB/Blueooth tethering via PdaNet/FoxFi --http://foxfi.com/ It requires a client software on the other device however. You might be able to use Internet Connection sharing to connect the client to a router and distribute the connection via wireless... I haven't tried it myself, though.

anyone out there using wifi tether either rooted or not.
I did the latest system update, rooted device and I can't get wifi tether to work anymore. Tried replacing services.jar and services.odex, tried wifi tether for root users, barnacle, and even foxfi.
Nothing works.
I know I can revert back to before system update. Just wondering if there are any other ideas out there.
Bluetooth tether isn't working for me on MDL with root. I have not reflashed the hotspot mod.

You mean MDL?
Yes, I'm on MDL.
One other note ... my phone never did hands free activation, so there are no sprint aps installed, no spritnt zone, no sprint loading picture, etc ...
I can not get hotspot mod to work or anything. Perhaps not doing hands free activation precludes hotspot from working.
I updated and reinstalled and it will connect but only has limited connection and will not work.
Earlier today my whole google voice integration got screwed up today with this system update. I had to take my phone into sprint for them to hard reset it then re-flash it and then reprogram the phone.
I have confirmation ... It doesnt work because sprint apps were never installed with hands free activation.
Nothing to do with MDL vs MDC.
I would Odin flash MDL which will load all the apps.
I redid mine and followed everything as written and it works great. I had messed it up from the first time by downloading the apps that I had before updating that had some files from old (MDC) .
Okay so I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 from sprint, I love the phone it’s great. I was on the mdl update stock rooted and everything was working fine with wifi. Then I did a factory reset updated to mf9 (the latest update) and then rooted it still stock. Now my phone will connect to wifi if I manually connect to it and works fine, however, if I disable and reenable wifi or restart the phone or leave my house and come back, it will not reconnect to my network automatically, I have to select it myself and put the security key in everytime. When I disable and reenable my wifi it will show “secured” under my network, making it seem as if it never tried to save the network in the first place, So it won't automatically connect like it use to on the mdl update, because it seems as if it forgets it when it disconnects.
I tried even connecting and then forgetting the network and then connecting again to see if that would fix it but it didn’t.
The weird thing is that at my work it remembered the network and connects automatically and when I’m in range. And when I’m away from work I can see it saying “not in range”. Why isn’t my home network doing the same thing, and how do I fix this? (btw I really don’t want to do another factory reset if I don’t have to.)
-I have a 2wire 3800HGV-B router.

Okay well I fixed it by unrooting and using odin to go back two updates prior to mf9, then did 2 ota's back to mf9 and rooted again. all is working fine, also fixed the phone's getting too hot problem and battery last longer than ever.
it's your kernel that was causing this...for future reference, if you're on mf9 with the stock mf9 kernel and do not want to have to wipe your phone to fix this, you can use ShabbyPenguin's kernel...i had this issue before on my s4 and this worked for me...why the rooted stock rom doesnt like the stock kernel for wifi blows my mind...lol
How was it going on? Do you still have the problem with the wifi?
Perhaps you can try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...56&postcount=2 (Greatly appreciated and high credit to dajumper's work.)
This works on my I337 NI1 Unlocked Rooted. I uses ES Explorer with Root Explorer enabled.
I went to the "system " folder in the device, scrolled down until I found "build prop" then edited using ES Explorer Note Editor.

I am sorry for the belated response. I think the link might change to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2685519
I do apologize for this inconvenience. Good luck.. :good:
Root MethodAmazon has just released a new firmware update, blocking the fastboot commands necessary for root/custom ROMs (fastboot boot). We need more information about this update. If people could update their tablet to this latest version without getting it stuck in the botloop, we could see the information regarding the update and get root out for this ROM ASAP. Thanks to anyone who sacrifices root/ROMs for development.
List of things you can't do:
Downgrade to an earlier release
Boot a .img from Fastboot
List of things you can do:
Install and use the Google Play Framework and Services
Root
Install Custom ROMS via FlashFire
Remove Lockscreen Ads
Remove Amazon Bloatware
Feel free to comments things that worked/didn't work on your device.
ANYONE WHO IS ON 5.0.x AND WANTS TO GO TO 5.1.1 WITHOUT ANY COMPLICATIONS AND KEEPING TWRP, GO TO THIS LINK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3265594
Can anyone test if the Google Framework Install tutorial works on this update?
It does.
However, DON'T TRY TO DOWNGRADE BACK TO THE 5.0.1 FIRMWARE. IT WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE. I found that out the hard way. It's stuck in a preloader reboot-loop.
Added list of what you are able to do on the update.
Can someone with a brand new Fire & an open wifi network within range, confirm that it will not automatically connect to wifi? I would appreciate it greatly.
Yes, I do believe that you should have to agree to connect to wifi. And that's what I vaguely recall from my Fire. But I'd like to be 100% sure. Don't want to take the slightest chance. My friend has a new fire in the box & has an open wifi network within range of their place.

You have to go through the setup, but originally I just skipped that part, even though I was next to a Starbucks, and it didn't connect.
Doesn't Starbucks wifi require you to click to agree to their terms of use before you can freely browse or download? So Internet would not actually be available initially to the update script.
Pretty much, I trust amazon on this issue, as far as I can throw them. I don't want to presume that a OTA proccess won't silently connect, while the Fire otherwise appears to be waiting for the ok to connect to wifi.
Bloat removal
Hi just to add this thread it looks like you cannot remove any of the bloat as I was able to do on 5.01

Thanks, added.
This is bullsh!t. the ENTIRE reason about 5,000 people bought this tab last week is because of root, fastboot and CM. If I get my tab soon I can offer any assistance you need. I'm not sure if it will be possible to dump any part of the system, boot, etc. without fastboot or twrp, but I'm sure we could figure something out.

Has anyone tried kingroot on 5.1.1?
Experts please take a look at this
What was changed in OS 5.1.1?
If anyone can get the frimware update or capture it id like to test it out
running 5.1.1 & all I could manage to load was Google Account manager. The rest (Framework Services, etc) says something like "App not installed" & nothing else, every time I try.
scratch that..... found found a couple that did load for me.
Damn! I did this (tried to downgrade, got bricked) a day before you posted this. I should probably replace mine...
My unrooted Fire upgraded to 5.1.1 last night before I had any idea it was coming. I'm willing to try whatever is needed to assist with further research if I could be of any help.
unlikely it would work, but did anyone on 5.1.1 try
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 boot twrpfilename

Hello, while I was trying to root my phone with engboot, my phone was bricked, and I restored it to 6.0.1 from 7.0 via Odin. I used the trick that allowed you to use hotspot on 6.0.1, and it worked. But then, the OTA's began rolling in. My phone upgraded to 7.0. I tried my luck to see if package disabler pro was still working, and it was. It still said that "tetheringprovision.apk" was disabled. So I tried hotspot and it worked.
For any questions, PM me
I can send you the file links to restore your phone back to!
Thanks
I will post screenshots soon!
Hey guys, This is still working with the new security update!
Mobile hotspot not working
Hello, I have a galaxy s7 active running android 7.0 on freedom pop. It's 8gb data / month for almost $40
I want to turn it into a mobile hotspot for my chrome cast. Freedom pop said tethering is allowed on that plan. I'm running on AT&T towers. When i turn on mobile hotspot it says verifying... There is a temporary network problem.
I tried netshare, pdanet+, and foxfi. None of them worked.
I also tried setting up a VPN but apparently chrome cast has to have internet
Hey! My samsung galaxy j320ag was shipped from The US as a gift, unlocked but the hotspot doesn't work out of the box. Every time I tick the hotspot switch, it reverts to off! I followed the rooting method here and have successfully gained root privileges and now I ask, is there any root method available to make the hotspot functional? Everything else works I. E WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, etc.
Heres the modified apk

Thanks bro, i backed up the original with ZipMe first but after flashing the downloaded zip, hotspot doesn't even try to turn on, so I flashed the backup. Any other solution?
@brainycaleb
I edited the link above. Same apk, just fixed the updater-script
I will try it now and give you feedback ASAP
Didn't work, still same issue
Dang...I would like to get it figured out. If your down for more testing ill tear apart tethering from an AG. Lmk
Bring it on @DamienMc
