[Q] random google maps turn by turn nav problems - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

has anyone ever experienced instances (it seems randomly) where the voice nav on g maps won't give you street names, but just turn and distance directions? i can't always be watching the screen, and this is a bummer.
it happens randomly, so that's why i'm checking here.

Don't have this problem. Are you using stock or custom ROM? KitKat or jellybean? Stock or custom kernel?

If you are looking for serious navigation, just use Sygic or Navigon or some other offline navigator.

Lag after using ODIN

Hi i just flashed JM8 rom with odin and i have to say, after using it the phone was more slow, even after i upgraded to the same rom i was using previously...
Any one noticed it?
most people now using stock or custom jpu, there is virtually no lag
but i never noticed slowdowns after reset in 2.1 roms (last one was jm2)

Strange...how about the gps performance with that rom?
Have you ever had gps issues with your phone?
yes, it was jumping around from times to times, so as a car navigation it was useless.
but from jpx/jpu time it is ok, car navigation is working fine

GPS working good?

Hey guys. Really really love my new n7 its amazing.
Of course the moment I got it home I rooted it and installed a few roms! You just have to!
I'm currently on paranoid android 2.23 with no kernel change.
My issue is this: my GPS won't lock at all! Google maps with GPS enabled without wifi always returns location unavailable.
I'm almost 100% sure the nexus has GPS so what's the problem?
Anyone having this issue or any solutions?

I can second that, it runs perfectly. Try a clean install.
Try GPS Status from the market and go to tools and erase the location assistant data then download assistance. Also GPS Status also shows you if you are picking up satellites and just not getting a lock. If you get even one lock just be patient and you will get the other ones you need eventually.
Your first lock in awhile is going to take longer because the GPS logic assumes you have changed locations and does a cold start up.
Give it some help and go outside with at least a decent look at the sky keep it in one place.
I haven't had top do this in a long time but sometimes if I had toggled GPS from on to off I wouldn't get a lock but rebooting with GPS toggled on would fix it.
And a few times reflashing the same kernel would fix a flakey GPS

GPS status is pretty good app! Thank you for suggesting it.
GPS status showed 9 sat and 9 locks, but maps didn't work still.
I then did the reset and download and now maps locks me and shows location.
Thank you!
This might be a little off topic but what exactly does the assistant data do?

Nexus 7 and Auto- airplane mode by DON

Since the 4.2 update, this app is not working with Nexus 7. Any one got a workaround or a recommendation for a similar app.
Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same problem.
Same problem... Doesn't work at all.

Yes, Google hastily and sloppily killed it as a quick security fix. The issue has been reported back to Google to implement a better / alternative solution.
If it's important to you, please go to the link below and 'star' the issue so it gets Google's attention quicker.
Bring back the ability to toggle airplane mode, or a way to enable/disable the cellular radio without affecting other radios

Been using Better WiFi On off for now.

Well it's clear some app of yours is using Google Services. I would check which gApps are pulling or pushing data all the time. Check for things like notifications, social network updates (G+), etc. If it's not any of your Google Apps, then it might be an app or more that was downloaded from the play store which uses Google Services. Some that come to mind are games that use your Google account for scoreboards, achievements, etc.
You are not using the screen much which causes Google Services to seem to look like it is draining badly.
It is actually the GPS which is causing the battery drain, unfortunately you cannot do anything about it, even disabling the GPS does not help.

Thanks guys, and as you say I turned off GPS and that made no difference, and asuka how would I go about identifying those apps?
Perhaps I should add that this only began after I updated liquid smooth and moved from Franco to matr1x, my app list has not changed and this was not happening before, so something must have changed that I want to change back

Unfortunately this is pretty much a universal issue with android devices these days.

Thank you for your help, in this case then, how come it did not occur before I updated my ROM and kernel? And out of interest does 4.3 solve the issue?

Google Play Services must of updated to the latest version which really causes battery drainage with CPU and GPS use.
Android 4.3 does not solve this issue unfortunately.

Thank you again for your extended help and knowledge, so it seems Google just need to get there act together! Is there any way to downgrade/uninstall/force stop the application without any negative effects?

I can help a little with that.
Indeed is from Google Services, more specific, the Location service. I myself have spent the last week trying to see what is happening with this topic, and it seems that last Google Maps update came with an issue using Google Services. Then I tried to freeze and then to uninstall the app, but made no difference.
I made a clean install of Carbon with no sync from Google, so I could see what´s the source of such battery drain.
I discovered that the drain come specifically from an option in Location settings: Settings > Location Access > Wi-Fi & Mobile Network Location.
I left GPS Satellites checked and even with that, no more Google Services drain. All the drain come from the other option, and is more noticeable when you are connected to WiFi.
No need to disable other Location services nor other settings about locations, just unckeck that option and Google Services won´t even appear in the battery graph.
Hope it helps.

Ghost fingers on touch screen...??

Hi guys,
I recently bought a Google Nexus 4. Great device! But now I have a problem with the touch screen I guess.
I have some ghost touches on the screen. They are always on the same places.
To be more specific, on the same X-as of the screen. 3 to 5 touches in horizontal direction, swiping and touching the screen.
It's not always there, that's what's bothering me.. what is gods name could it be...
I'll add a screenshot of the touches when I get a chance to...
I have this problem for about a week now. And I was wondering if someone knows the solution to this.
ROM: Cyanogenmod 10.1.2
Cheers,
Alexander

It happens every now and then. It started a week and a half ago or two weeks ago. Not exactly sure.

I have installed the custom rom the moment I got this device. It didn't happen before.. So I doubt it is a software problem. I'd rather think of it as a hardware problem, don't you think?
No-one?
If it started on custom Rom then flash back to stock to see if it still happens. If not then there you go.
If still happens even on stock then RMA the device.

I flashed another ROM CM10.2 UNOFFICIAL. Did a clean install.
Untill now it is reacting normal.. Let's wait and see.
I am thinking, could it be of some backup settings it is recovering from my google account?
Because it has no Gapps installed yet. Downloading at the moment.
Thanks in advance
As suggested, try stock.

Ok, The CM10.2 did not work. I disabled auto backup and recovery of Google settings and stuff and flashed the Stock ROM 4.2.2.
Also there was an official update to 4.3. And surprisingly enough, the device is responding normal again. Still though, i think it was very strange that the problem was also in the recovery...
