[Q] Nexus 4 no longer recognised as a device on Mac OSX - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Folks,
I've been unable to sync photos to iPhoto on my Mac (10.9.2) for a few months now. Decided to upgrade to latest 4.4.2 (update from google) but it's still not recognized as a device. As far as I remember if I had it in MTP mode, when I plugged the phone in iPhoto used to open with options to sync photos.
I previously rooted the phone with CWM and SuperSU, the device does appear in the list when I run:
$ ./adb-mac devices
List of devices attached
01637f56g7814390 device
When USB debugging is turned on, a message "USB debugging connected" appears on screen, but iphoto doesn't see the device, and nothing in Disk Utility either. Android File transfer says: "No Android device found".
Any help to get photo sync / file transfer operational again much appreciated.
Thanks

The 4.4.2 update seems to be fine, haven't noticed anything weird, certainly no 'bricking', it's the photo syncing / device detection that still doesn't work (it wasn't syncing before the upgrade). I'm looking for some troubleshooting ideas, like log files to look at, or some options to try. I've tried several usb cables, same result.
[Edit: the poster I was replying to deleted their comment about their phone getting bricked, oh well]

Found the option, it's buried in
Settings>Storage>...Menu>USB computer connection>Camera (PTP)
very intuitive thank u google
Hopefully this will be helpful to someone else out there

Cannot transfer files with MTP / Device not viewable in Windows Explorer

When I connect my Nexus 7 to my Windows XP (SP3) PC via USB, it's obvious the computer recognizes it and it tries to install ADB drivers. Whether I choose to install those drivers or not, I still can't locate my device in the Windows Explorer Tree. I checked Disk Management for the hell of it and nothing but my PC's harddrives were there. There's an attempt to install drivers for "MTP" but that fails and I'm pretty sure that's the cause; however, I'm unable to replicate it, even as I uninstall/reinstall applicable drivers from the device manager the MTP failure never happens anymore. I did some googling and found a thread with someone who had a similiar experience. In turn, I downloaded https://www.box.com/s/2c25e8bc42ecce400afd to try a different set of drivers. Same problem. Driver install is fine for ADB, but still unable to see my device in Windows Explorer. I'm able to successfully connect the device to the PC with PTP for the camera. I can access DCIM and cache which can serve as a work around, but I'm hoping you can provide any ideas you might have. Thank you!
edit - ***resolution***: Ok, I figured it out...I had to disable USB debugging. I don't know if this helped either, but I installed these drivers as an alternative to the drivers that were originally installed: https://www.box.com/s/2c25e8bc42ecce400afd
While connected to PC, I switched to PTP mode because I was about to give up and just use that
I then disabled usb debugging and switched back to MTP at which point the drivers successfully installed and I could now view my device in Windows Explorer. I also believe downloading the drivers in the link above helped since the first crack I took at this was unsuccessful with existing drivers.
install pdanet on pc and it will install drivers for u so it will be recognized

Been battling with this on my XP machine since yesterday. I couldn't even get debugging to work until I installed NakedDriver. And even still, there seems to be no way to get MTP to work without turning debugging off. On my Win7 machine everything worked perfectly, both ADB and MTP, right out of the box. I have the Galaxy Nexus drivers installed on both machines (which I've read are compatible with the N7). I also have the latest version of Windows Media Player (I've read that some older versions have issues with MTP). Is anyone else able to run ADB and MTP on XP?
*edit*
A: Does PDAnet let you use MTP and ADB simultaneously? Because I really don't want to install it if I don't have to. I got rid of it ages ago (too many things starting up at boot time).
B: I have a Galaxy Nexus also, and I have no issues on the XP box.
I wouldn't bother with MTP, it's not always showing the contents of the internal storage properly when viewed in Windows Explorer.
Earlier today when I was trying to set up a backup profile for it, it didn't copy all the files off. On closer inspection I found folders like TitaniumBackup to be completely empty, which is not true according to ES File Explorer on the tablet.
I tried connecting MTP again, with USB Debugging on and off but this made no difference. Also I'm only seeing the Notifications folder instead of 36 folders on the internal storage now, really random how it's working.
asus site now has a usb driver for N7
try that

Updated with ASUS drivers, still doesn't view internal storage fully.

Same here. No change with the Asus drivers. Still can't use MTP when ADB is turned on.
poo. how do I transfer my audiobooks to this stupid device without working drivers?
1. Please disconnect Nexus7
2. Remove drivers on PC.
3. Toggle ON : Settings->Wireless&Networkings->More->NFC.
4. Re-connect device
Good luck !

1. Uncheck MTP, check the one next to it (Camera)
2. Unplug USB
3. Turn off USB Debugging (Uncheck it)
4. Plug in USB
5. Should say connected as camera, then a new window will pop-up allowing you to see your files.
Tell me if it works!
im having trouble too, is there any way to make the device to be recognised as a flash drive?
Internal memory partly invisible from Windows 7 Explorer

Same observation here (a few months later) on stock Android 4.1.1 rooted.
It seems that new files in the internal memory remain invisible for a long time, but so far they have become visible eventually, sometimes a day or two later. I have no clue what could possibly cause this, and I have not found any trick or workaround that makes them visible, not even rebooting. Any hint is welcome.

Didn't work. Just shows up as a camera with the limited folder access one would expect.
Workaround
I now use the following workaround.
Install SDrescan from Google Play.
Run it.
If you already had your phone connected to a computer as a media device (MTP) and are watching the contents of your SD card or internal memory in Windows Explorer, press F5 to refresh your view. If not, connect it now.
I'd be curious whether this works for you as well. If it does, press the THANKS button below.
Same issue with an old ibm x40 udated to windows xp pro SP3.
I've installed mtp driver, without success
I've "tried" to install asus driver, without success
I've tried to do as above with the help of the nexus toolkit, without success.
Everytime, the laptop recognize the device as android ADB interface.
Someone could help me?
Thank you in advance

Nexus 7 doesn't show up in My Computer when connected as a Media Device

I recently rooted my nexus 7 (Jelly Bean 4.3) by following guidelines described in an article.
Everything went according to the article and rooting was successful. But before rooting according to the article i removed all the drivers and installed them again. During the rooting process(Unlocking and Rooting) the device was always connected as a Camera(PTP). Now when i connect my device as MTP it doesn't show up in my computer.device it self says it's connected as a MTP device but it doesn't even show up in the DDMS of eclipse. But when i change the connection type to PTP it shows up in the my computer and DDMS but in My Computer it only allows me to access pictures and DCIM folders only.
How can i fix this without unrooting my device? Please Help!

This belongs to Q&A forum...it was discussed there already. Next time use the search bar of this website.
For now...go to developer options and activate or deactivate USB debugging (depending on it's state now).

Galaxy S5 wont show up as disk drive on Mac

I have the Developers Edition that i'm rooted on stock rom currently. When using the Samsung provided USB cable I'm not able to pull it up as a hard drive to access both sd cards. I never had this issue with Motorola or HTC they always showed up automatically. I have USB debugging checked as well as Kies3 uninstalled and then I reinstalled Android File Transfer then rebooted Mac. All that shows up is Verizon Mobile for about 30 seconds then nothing. Media options are MTP and PTP camera but Media Device USB greyed out. Android File Transfer does pop up but it wont let me manage device. I'm talking to Samsung live chat at the moment i'm posting this topic. Any ideas anyone?
UPDATE: FIXED used official kies uninstaller then reinstalled AFT and phone shows up as media drive.

My PC doesn't recognize the phone at all

Hello!
I have a Nexus 4 (currently running the latest CM12 nightly) and I have been struggling with this issue for a long time. I needed to transfer some photos on my PC and when I connected my phone I found out that the PC doesn't recognize it at all - it doesn't appear in the Device manager and I don't even have Other devices and/or Android devices as categories in there too. This was about a few months ago when my PC was running Windows 8.1. Before this issue occured I had no problems connecting my phone to the same PC, running the same OS and even in the same port. And also I was running CM nightly builds back at that time too. I started using AirDroid, but it's a pain the butt to transfer masses of files such as photos from there, because it takes a huge amount of time. So basically I have tried the following with no result:
Turned on USB debugging
Tried all of the PC ports and even a USB hub
Tried a different USB cable
Installed Android SDK
Deleted every single USB driver and reinstalled it seperately
Now I am running Windows 10 64x on my PC and it might come as a surprise, but the phone still is not being recognized at all. Yesterday I tried to connect it to a friend's PC and it was actually recognized and I could access i, but I need it to work on my own PC. I will be truly grateful if you could help me resolve this issue and I apologize if there has ever been such a thread in here, but I just made my account Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

So, with Win 8.1, at one point, Microsoft via their Win updates pushed out an Acer ADB Device Driver which was complete sheet, and you had to roll it back to get it to work. I only vaguely recall the details, but sounds like you uninstalled them. Here is a thread on the issue: http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-...usb-issue-since-last-windows-8-1-updates.html
You might try downloading Wug's NRT, and going through the driver clean up and install steps and see if that fixes it. You may have some USB device which needs to be removed or failed. The Toolkit will walk you through the process. Also, remember on W10, you do not get an obvious pop-up (to the point I have questioned whether my device was detected), but if you click the Messages bubble in the bottom right of the screen and expand it, if it detects, it will tell you a device was detected.

[TIP]OmniROM:5.1 + Kindle Fire HD 7 & USB Configurations (i.e. MTP)

It took me a while to figure this out, and once I did I felt pretty dense.
After successfully transforming my Kindle Fire with the OmniROM Custom ROM, I spent about a day scouring for the perfect apps to make my new environment into a personal man-cave. Then came time for me to start transferring files and working with adb between the tablet and the PC.
Well, plugging the tablet into USB port, I was surprised to notice that the device did not show up in my Windows tray, nor did the tablet ask me what USB Connection Type I would like to employ.
So I did some research. I tried one suggestion to use the app, "Multi Mount SD-Card Lite". This app was reported to have a successful "MTP Fix" option; that option did not work for me. I kept trying different USB drivers for Android, Kindle, Universal : nothing was changing.
Then finally, after going through my dev. options and system settings over and over I noticed on the STORAGE panel, in settings.. up there in the top-right corner.. was a little | Menu .. I clicked on it and what do you know!!
"USB Computer Connection" >
Media Device (MTP)
Camera (PTP)
At first, MTP did not work. I checked the box, but it un-checked itself. So I tried PTP - then the computer starts to update drivers!! My Internal Storage shows up, revealing only image files of course. Then once that settled, I tried the MTP option again, it stayed checked.
I can now browse my tablet to my heart's content once again.
Hope this TIP helps other adventurers out there.
Thanks to all the dev. teams who work to keep us entertained and blessed with digital tools!
