Usb door broke off - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had the phone for 2 days and it snapped off. I tried to snap it back together but it's a no go. The black flexible thing is still there. I don't know if this would be covered through the warranty or what because I pretty much lose the water resistant feature. I have the door and use it when I'm not charging the phone but it's only a matter of time until I lose it. Has anyone had this happen to them or had a gs4 active and had it break?

I figured this would happen to someone eventually. That sounds like a manufacture defect. I would contact either Samsung or wherever you purchased the phone.

Yikes, I'm afraid I'll eventually end up breaking mine too

This just happened to me today.
I was on the phone for 2hrs today with AT&T and Samsung. I called AT&T 3 times and came down to this. You will need to send it in to Samsung to get it repaired. It is not covered under warranty. You can not take it back if you are under the 14 day Buyers Remorse. You are ******!

How are you guys breaking it off? By pulling on it? Bending it too much?
-Sent from Tapatalk

Im having the same problem my usb cover broke and Sprint wants me to file and claim since they dont have the part to fix it and Samsung considers it a cosmetic damage and I would have to pay to get it fixed and its not covered under warranty even though I've only had it for 4 days.

How hard would it have been to build a spring loaded door? one that can only go IN, towards the charging port.. Pull out the charger and.. done, spring loads shut.
I think we're all gonna break our evenntually

That's crap. If anything, they should make it easy to fix or make it simple as buying a new one and inserting the rubber part into the hole

Mine broke off also (had it 4 days). It looks like Samsung planned for this as if you take off the back cover there is a screed and cover right where the part is to replace it.
Honestly I'd rather not have the cover as it's constantly in my way, i sent a message over to Lifeproof in hopes that their next case does not require the cover to be on the phone.

So do you guys have to buy a new cover because the rubber tore? Or just screw the same one back in?

It'd be an interesting design that supported IP67 and didn't require proprietary and/or very-deep USB3 micro connectors.

I tore mine off on purpose. I suggest you do the same ;]

I effed up, learn from my mistake...

Well, I'll be getting my $100 replacement tomorrow.
I'm usually very handy with electronics, I used to take my Blackberry's apart all the time and blow the dust out.
So I read up on disassembling the EVO and thought "this is gonna be a piece of cake". Well every set of instructions I found said it was SOO easy to take it apart, what they didn't say was they were assuming you have a replacement screen ready to go and that trying to remove the screen from the bezel separated the touch input from the backside of the glass.
Maybe I did it wrong but I broke my precious and almost cried.. a little.
I no longer have any touch input on the bottom half of the screen including the 4 buttons at the bottom. And you can see from the front how it looks like a clear sticker has been pulled apart from the glass. The LCD is fine, just totally jacked up the touch input.
So the purpose of this thread is to warn anyone else who may consider disassembling their EVO to read more than I did.
It may actually be very easy to get the thing apart, getting it back together is another story
Ouch man that sucks
From the fade
Condolences for the dear departed one. A point well taken, thanks!
Although I've "played" with dismantling many electronics during my days, this is one I would not take on. I even opted for the additional cost with BestBuy for their low price replacement for our 2 Evo's.
hmmm........
Aww man so sorry for you lost. That's great you've put up this post as I was just thinking about replacing my evo casing from all the cosmetic damage I've put on it while dropping. Thanks to you my friend this make my decision much easier.
I was going to do the same thing for the same purpose. Thanks for the heads up.

Damn, I didn't even think of looking. Actually my girl called Sprint and ordered the replacement the next morning without telling me.

No problem, MTFBWY
That sucks alot!!!
I did the same thing, wish I'd have read this post first! I had the dust in the upper left of my screen. I have taken this phone apart before, but not removed the glass. In attempting to remove the glass I messed up the upper right corner of the touch screen (just a small area but still sucks!) and now the tint of some colors is messed up. Also rashed up the plastic on the edges some. Oh and I did get the glass off just enough to spread the friggin dust all around haha. Oh well it's livable until June when I can get a full upgrade (hopefully the EVO 3D!). Let my post here serve as a SECOND warning for those who want to attempt to remove the dust themselves. The glass is glued down and you pretty much have to destroy the phone to remove it. Don't try it!!

You sure you got the right screen? Epic uses SAMOLED, not LCD... also, the digitizer and the LEDs are part of the same construct (one of the reasons it's "super"), so you'd effectively be really just changing the display with integrated digitizer. The glass itself is glued to the plastic case. You'd need to find a way to pull it up, from what I can tell. (I have not ever taken one apart, but it is almost certain that it is a glued screen, which explains why some people are having peeling issues (my Evo had this.))
There is not much for the Epic but some info for the original Galaxy S

yea i was just saying "lcd" i got the right one i know
taking a look at the links below
ok well by the looks of it, its pretty much the same thing. i talked to a tech at a repair center, and he said he MIGHT be able to do it. if not, i think i probably have about 70% chance of getting it right. the video showed a break down right down to the digitizer, and it looks almost EXACTLY like that i have, so in theory, i should just have to go as far as gettting the back off, and putting the back BACK on the NEW digitizer/amoleisupmyassed, right?
also, just for clarification, i know i have the right one bcuz i can see the button whole thingies and its the same as what the epic has (menu, home, back, search)
thanks for the useful links& help guys

I've watched a video for another galaxy phone ... the reason I'm nervous about this one is because on the Epic the screen is on a separate part of the assembly because of the keyboard.
Also: The video shows how to take it apart .. but not how to put it together again. Do I need to glue it together again? What type of glue?

No even though Sprint has it in their system as marked "bad esn" samsung will not have to do with this. Although I don't think Samsungs warranty covers accidents, such as dropping your phone and cracking the screen.
Hope you get it figured out!

Well Samsung has their own warranty thing...but I would confirm by contacting Samsung..don't tell them you swapped networks or anything of course..otherwise I don't think they would bother to check...
You can always flash it back too..unless phone doesnt work completely?
I got the whole screen + keyboard for under $60 on ebay. It turned out to be as simple as unscrewing and unsnapping the cover, disconnecting three connectors, removing the electronics and putting them in to the new frame. If I'd have to do it again it wouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Somehow "broke" my replacement digitizer - help?

The dis-assembly went rather smoothly. When I was kind of finangling to get the new digitizer on, I noticed that the actual strip had become lose. I believe this may have been caused by the heat of my hand - or perhaps it was fault to begin with.
Now looking at the circuitry and the ribbon itself, it doesn't seem like anything is broken. Would there be any way for me to adhere the ribbon back on properly in order to make my digitizer work again? I don't really have the money to shell out for a brand new one and this is a bit of a pain in the butt.
Thanks in advance.

I think it may be a fault in the replacement you ordered and should request a new one. The "heat" from your hand couldnt have done that, and if it did, that would have happened anyway because the internals of the phone would get much hotter

Perfect. The part definitely seemed strange from the get-go. The company offered me 10% off, which I don't really feel is fair if the part is actually defective.

Threaten to get BBB involved. That's the only way I got repair universe to send me a replacement after many emails about the matter. The digitizer they sent me had the ribbon cut nearly in half. Gave me the run around about how their stuff is fully tested before leaving the site and if I could take a picture. I told them all I wanted was my digitizer and if they couldn't honor their return policy I would call BBB and report. I was given the RMA the next email.

Cracks in the aluminum. Just noticed today that my phone has cracks in the aluminum, i have never dropped the device and have had a Silicon cover on it.

From CF-Root 6.4 thread:
How to uninstall
This is by no means an extensive guide for unrooting, but if you want to sell or warranty your device, I advise the following procedure:
- Use Triangle Away to reset the flash counters, and pull the battery immediately after rebooting starts
- Boot into recovery and perform a wipe, and pull the battery immediately after rebooting starts
- Go to SamMobile and get the stock firmware for your region
- Flash that stock firmware on your device
- Let Android boot, go through device setup (without doing any logins) until Android is fully usable again
- Reboot
- Wait at least 10 minutes
- Check Settings->About device->Status and make sure Device status is not "Modified"
- Perform another factory reset
- Boot into download mode and make sure the flash counter and system status are all set to official
Some of these steps may require further info, if you can't figure it out, do some more searching, or ask people who aren't me

One it does look like a cut from the picture but visual inspection may show a crack .
What will Samsung say crack or cut when they look at it .
But you do say cracks not one crack .
Two removing traces of root is easy and returns phone to a warranty state .
So do you want to remove root return the phone and get it back in a few weeks saying not warranty its damaged .
In that respect could you not get a local store to just look at the crack first to confirm it is and save wasting time .
jje
I have one of these too!
I have vertical CUTS at all 4 corners, where they smooshed together the pieces. There is no space between the two sides of the cut, and you can't even feel it, but it's there and visible if you look for it. My phone has been dropped a fair amount, but the cuts were there the day I got it.
"Don't worry about it" is my advice.

Don't listen to the others telling you nit to worry. If you haven't dropped it get on to the place of purchase asap. I made the mistake of not doing that and dented my phone a little after so I'm out of luck. It will split all the way through soon. The ones in the four corners r normal.

[Q] Water Damaged S4... why me? [UPDATED]

Well I did it... Water damaged S4. I was on vaca on Hilton Head when I took my phone with me into the pool completely forgetting I had it in my pocket. Insurance was useless because I only added it after the occurrence and they can apparently see now if there is any active use on the phone in question so they said no. So I guess I have just a couple of questions:
#1 How salvageable is this device? I have read some other posts about taking the phone apart and using ethanol or isopropal to remove any chemical or salt deposits.
#2 Is this even worth trying...? Based off the pics is this even a worth while cause?
Thanks and plz belay the '[email protected] comments. I have been through it all since this past Friday.
UPDATE:
Well after a few hours with the isopropal alc. and a toothbrush I got the phone all cleaned up and dried with a hairdryer. This was a few hours ago but I decided to give it a try and put the battery back in. Unfortunately I think it succumbed to the damage- all that would happen is the usual vibrate as you hold down the power button but the screen will not light up and no sound.
Someone noted that the corrosion looked especially bad... it was probably all the chlorine build up as I had the phone submerged for about 5-10 minutes. I posted some 'AFTER' pics of my cleaning job and you may notice that there may have been some shorting or heat damage done to some of the components.
Lastly, after a heartfelt conversation with my wife about what my options were we discussed the notion of adding a line to our plan as we'll have need of a 'home' phone eventually (jr. coming in July). So I think I may be able to trade in the iphone 4 I've been using and get another one.
That looks like some pretty bad corrosion. I've had luck in the past with removing all the parts attached to the logic board and giving it an "acid bath" in isopropal and scraping what you can away with like a spudger or a toothpick. I also believe that the display assembly and LCD are fused together, so while you hopefully don't have leakage into that area.
That being said, that is some of the oddest residue I have seen from water damage, maybe because of the salts/chemicals used in the pool? You might try and tear down as much as you can in terms of mid-frames and the like, and use a dampened cloth to remove all of that gunk.
Worst that can happen is that it doesn't work and you sell it on ebay as "slightly used"
Here is the ifixit guide, best of luck to you! http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+S4+Teardown/13947/1

Wow, dude sorry, good pics, before you do anything, get some dry white rice, put in a sealed plastic bag, seal each part in the rice for 24-48hrs...it may work, had a friend drop his in tolit, we got it to work using this process, what could trying it hurt eh? Good Luck.

Sorry to say, but I think it's too far gone for any of these suggestions. Those methods are meant for immediate action after taking a short dip in water (such as a toilet). From the looks of those pictures, I'd say you did some good long swimming in that pool before realizing your phone was along for the ride. So I think you may be SOL. Just a forewarning in case you try some of these methods with high expectations.

Check with your credit card company. You might be covered under their accidental damage coverage policy, if any.

probably not the best idea to post a picture with your imei, in case you do get your phone working. Just throwing that out there.

That phone is beyond repair, looks very bad. I had my captivate sit in the tub for 3 hours and when I opened it, it didnt look anything like that and after a few hours the phone was back at work with a new battery. Sorry OP but you have a very expensive paper weight.

I actually did just that. Amex has it covered under their purchase protection so I'm covered financially, now its just the fact that I now have a AT&T Contract with nothing to show for it...
I did exactly the same thing on vacation with an iphone 4s. After that I paid and sent my new phone to a company that waterproofs the boards and components in the phone. Was only like 45 dollars plus shipping. Tested it out and the water just slides right off the boards in the phone xD amazing stuff
