replace lcd/digitizer - Epic 4G General

My screen is cracked to all hell. Is there a youtube video showing a strip down of the epic? Is there a guide on how to replace it? I have the lcd and ditizer,so I'm all set except for the actual replacement. LOL
Tia

would you mind sharing the source for the screen/digitizer for those that haven't broken their screens yet ?
Just curious.
I do not know how to tear it down yet though.
Thanks for sharing.

I got it from an interstate wireless on 7 mile for like 60$ lol
Anyone?

You sure you got the right screen? Epic uses SAMOLED, not LCD... also, the digitizer and the LEDs are part of the same construct (one of the reasons it's "super"), so you'd effectively be really just changing the display with integrated digitizer. The glass itself is glued to the plastic case. You'd need to find a way to pull it up, from what I can tell. (I have not ever taken one apart, but it is almost certain that it is a glued screen, which explains why some people are having peeling issues (my Evo had this.))

There is not much for the Epic but some info for the original Galaxy S

Thats prob all info there is :/

yea i was just saying "lcd" i got the right one i know
taking a look at the links below

ok well by the looks of it, its pretty much the same thing. i talked to a tech at a repair center, and he said he MIGHT be able to do it. if not, i think i probably have about 70% chance of getting it right. the video showed a break down right down to the digitizer, and it looks almost EXACTLY like that i have, so in theory, i should just have to go as far as gettting the back off, and putting the back BACK on the NEW digitizer/amoleisupmyassed, right?
also, just for clarification, i know i have the right one bcuz i can see the button whole thingies and its the same as what the epic has (menu, home, back, search)
thanks for the useful links& help guys

How is it out of warranty when it hasn't even been out for a year? or did you mod it or something?

just curious...so sprint installed the screen you purchased or they installed one of their own? I had to do this on an htc phone a while back and it was much easier than I imagined.

I purchased a bad esn phone off ebay. I run it on a different network. You think a Sprint store would do something for me?!

I've watched a video for another galaxy phone ... the reason I'm nervous about this one is because on the Epic the screen is on a separate part of the assembly because of the keyboard.
Also: The video shows how to take it apart .. but not how to put it together again. Do I need to glue it together again? What type of glue?

I still don't understand, why are you out of warranty? samsung offers a 1 year warranty...

does one not have to deal with sprint?
Does changing the software so that it runs on a different network not void the warranty?

No even though Sprint has it in their system as marked "bad esn" samsung will not have to do with this. Although I don't think Samsungs warranty covers accidents, such as dropping your phone and cracking the screen.
Hope you get it figured out!

Well Samsung has their own warranty thing...but I would confirm by contacting Samsung..don't tell them you swapped networks or anything of course..otherwise I don't think they would bother to check...
You can always flash it back too..unless phone doesnt work completely?

I got the whole screen + keyboard for under $60 on ebay. It turned out to be as simple as unscrewing and unsnapping the cover, disconnecting three connectors, removing the electronics and putting them in to the new frame. If I'd have to do it again it wouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

I effed up, learn from my mistake...

Well, I'll be getting my $100 replacement tomorrow.
I'm usually very handy with electronics, I used to take my Blackberry's apart all the time and blow the dust out.
So I read up on disassembling the EVO and thought "this is gonna be a piece of cake". Well every set of instructions I found said it was SOO easy to take it apart, what they didn't say was they were assuming you have a replacement screen ready to go and that trying to remove the screen from the bezel separated the touch input from the backside of the glass.
Maybe I did it wrong but I broke my precious and almost cried.. a little.
I no longer have any touch input on the bottom half of the screen including the 4 buttons at the bottom. And you can see from the front how it looks like a clear sticker has been pulled apart from the glass. The LCD is fine, just totally jacked up the touch input.
So the purpose of this thread is to warn anyone else who may consider disassembling their EVO to read more than I did.
It may actually be very easy to get the thing apart, getting it back together is another story
Ouch man that sucks
From the fade
Condolences for the dear departed one. A point well taken, thanks!
Although I've "played" with dismantling many electronics during my days, this is one I would not take on. I even opted for the additional cost with BestBuy for their low price replacement for our 2 Evo's.
hmmm........
Aww man so sorry for you lost. That's great you've put up this post as I was just thinking about replacing my evo casing from all the cosmetic damage I've put on it while dropping. Thanks to you my friend this make my decision much easier.
I was going to do the same thing for the same purpose. Thanks for the heads up.

Hmmm. you can buy the touch screen for like $50-$60 on ebay unless you are talking about a different part.

No problem, MTFBWY
That sucks alot!!!
I did the same thing, wish I'd have read this post first! I had the dust in the upper left of my screen. I have taken this phone apart before, but not removed the glass. In attempting to remove the glass I messed up the upper right corner of the touch screen (just a small area but still sucks!) and now the tint of some colors is messed up. Also rashed up the plastic on the edges some. Oh and I did get the glass off just enough to spread the friggin dust all around haha. Oh well it's livable until June when I can get a full upgrade (hopefully the EVO 3D!). Let my post here serve as a SECOND warning for those who want to attempt to remove the dust themselves. The glass is glued down and you pretty much have to destroy the phone to remove it. Don't try it!!

I ordered this same part and a new housing because I cracked my digitizer earlier this week. Thanks for the post, OP, because I plan on taking mine apart this weekend to replace it. Wish me luck! lol

took my epic apart

so i took my epic apart today, thinking i was going to be able to tighten the slider..but didnt lol...i might be really wrong, but the thing that makes it slide back and forth is a spring mechanism thing, theres 2 ,one for each side.each consists of 4 straight/maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch pins that r like springs.when u slide it back and forth 2 pull it and 2 stretch/vice versa (opening n closing it) ..i was gonna take some pics but dont own a camera and totally forgot that the phone wasnt gonna be usable during that time to take pics of itself LOL. im not sure, but i believe if it ever needs to be replaced, the techs would replace the whole panel thats attached with the slider/springs because the rotary spring thing is attached to it with (i forgot the name, but they look like a screw/nail with flat ends on both sides) .just thought id post this on here since alot of people were asking if it was easy to tighten it. sorry for making a useless thread. ..
ps: my phones slider's kinda good, but the upper left side(to the left of the spring logo) has a lil play,id say the thickness of a dime or quarter, around there.not much, but its annoying...this is the 2nd epic(i sent the other one cause it got way too loose )
..oh and i tried to tighten it myself cause i dont have insurance lol.id like to find a cool tech guy that'll do side-jobs for cheap..lol
Apparently sprints new insurance policy for everyone covers hardware but I'm not sure

Sprint has to send these phones back to Samsung to fix these kinds of issues as it requires a specialized assembly jig. IIRC Assurion is still sending out new replacements as it is economically unfeasible to fix them unless they got a ****load of bad units to fix. Most people just pony up the $100 and say they lost them...

What would have been really bad is if the thread title was "Hold my beer and watch this."
If you need it repaired, $35 at a Sprint repair center. When we harvest Epics, we keep the entire phone sans circuit board, making it a simple job to pop your board into the housing. If we would be out of harvested parts, we would order a phone for you for the same $35!
Somewhat related:
How do you get the connection from the screen to the mainboard reconnected? My epic got forced past its closed point and the ribbon cable popped out. The phone was exceptionally easy to get apart to that point but I cant seem to figure out how to get the damn ribbon cable back in the connector.
Edit:
Nevermind, I was taking a real good look at the area where the ribbon cable connects to the screen and I could see where the cable go ripped clean off. Definitely going to have to take it in for sure.
Yeahh for a while I was trippin. It was put back together.turn it on and no signal...open it up again and I guess I hadunplugged this lil cable type of thing.lol...I was like "****kkk " lol...so wait.its 35 dollars to get it fixed? Even if I don't have insurance??

If you have TEP, you should not have to pay this, correct? (given its is due to regular 'wear and tear', as the policy states on the website)
My first epic developed a really annoying purple line of pixels across the bottom 1-2 lines, which IS very small, but VERY annoying... in my experience w/ LCD TV/monitors, this is probably that cable either being disconnected or damaged, my best guess. Took it to my sprint store, and the tech in the back said it would cost me 35 to 'fix it' (replace either everything but the board/replace). Never made a ticket for it, even though I had to wait an hour... guy on phone tech support said that made no sense, as with TEP, its either free, or its thru insurance. I think the tech was just being a **** because he did not want to do this complicated job at 430 in the afternoon (/s). He told me it was a 'cosmetic flaw, and wasnt covered... I ended up getting another store to ship me a replacement, that FC'ed on EVERYTHING, so I took it back to store #1, and they wanted to order me yet another replacement, I said **** that, got the manager, and he gave me a new one, sans charger and other crap in box. So what is your understanding of the policy??? The policy on the internet, is surprisingly short, and literally says TEP covers 'normal wear and tear', so if I scratch the chrome like side bit, they should replace the whole thing for free? This is exactly what is implied, and theres no mention of any 'cosmetic' clause... just some 'tech' (no offense, directed at said tech) with a stick up his ass. I have never had any problem with this stuff... always awesome service... better than I would expect.. so are you guys told to be sticklers with the epic and maybe evo because of cost???? Just odd... trying to tell me a broken display panel is cosmetic... lol... what a ****tard. Anyways, the manager just said he would 'talk to him'... just wondering if it meant he was saying 'what the **** are you doing', or 'that customer is a ****, dont worry about it'... Not my fault Sammy made it so you cant just fix everything on site...

Somehow "broke" my replacement digitizer - help?

The dis-assembly went rather smoothly. When I was kind of finangling to get the new digitizer on, I noticed that the actual strip had become lose. I believe this may have been caused by the heat of my hand - or perhaps it was fault to begin with.
Now looking at the circuitry and the ribbon itself, it doesn't seem like anything is broken. Would there be any way for me to adhere the ribbon back on properly in order to make my digitizer work again? I don't really have the money to shell out for a brand new one and this is a bit of a pain in the butt.
Thanks in advance.

I think it may be a fault in the replacement you ordered and should request a new one. The "heat" from your hand couldnt have done that, and if it did, that would have happened anyway because the internals of the phone would get much hotter

Perfect. The part definitely seemed strange from the get-go. The company offered me 10% off, which I don't really feel is fair if the part is actually defective.

Threaten to get BBB involved. That's the only way I got repair universe to send me a replacement after many emails about the matter. The digitizer they sent me had the ribbon cut nearly in half. Gave me the run around about how their stuff is fully tested before leaving the site and if I could take a picture. I told them all I wanted was my digitizer and if they couldn't honor their return policy I would call BBB and report. I was given the RMA the next email.

Nexus 4 front glass repair Q's

I unfortunately dropped my phone and the front glass cracked, breaking the digitizer at the same time. Due to an interesting situation I'm in, I just need the front glass to be fixed, the digitizer doesn't matter to me. So basically I just need to the phone to look perfect from the outside. I've seen the front glass only for $30, but also read about how hard it is to just replace the glass without breaking the digitizer. Though, for me, I don't care if the digitizer is broken, so is it still too difficult to be worth it? Or would it be easier since there's no worry about the condition of the digitizer?
Thanks
Bump
Why do you want it to look good if it's still broken? This smells fishy...
Anyway, your main problem is probably going to be separating the two.

Actions like this make prices higher for the rest of us so excuse me if I don't help you do that. Have you looked into whether your original purchase was covered by any damage insurance that came with your credit card? If your credit card is like mine you can use that coverage to get a new phone and that would be much better than committing fraud just because your friend gave you permission that isn't his to give.

Are they the same carrier? If so then I would certainly try. Im quite familiar with the S2 internally, and every other way as well, which maybe a lot different than the S4 but likely not.
What I know about the s2 is it is easy to deal with and the different pieces inside are buttoned together or little snaps is the way I see think of them. I broke a piece once by trying to remove it the wrong way before I realized it was little snaps that joined the mic or vibratot and cameras to the mother board. Have fun. Sounds like you have nothing to loose.

I'll try it and report back. I've watched a few videos on how to remove it and it seems pretty easy. Or at least straight forward.
The answer is yes, yes you can switch the boards. Woot!
