Galaxy S5 and NFC - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
Picked up an S5 yesterday.
I can't seem to scan NFC tags with it though.
I have NFC tags laying around the house that I used on my S3 and S4 (which are different types of tags), but now I can't seem to scan them.
Has anyone else had any luck?
Edit:
Oh my god. complete moron move by me.... NFC was turned off!
I forgot that was an optional setting... SO used to it being turned on.
Sorry for wasting your time people...

[SOLVED] Mobile Networks/aGPS Location problem

Hello all,
I couldn't find a thread specifically for this problem since all the major issues are related with GPS.
The thing is, disabling GPS and leaving only the "Use wireless networks" on, I should have a very wide approximation of my location, enough for weather programs and Google Latitude for example.
My problem is, no matter what, my phone always think I'm located in Paris, when in fact I live near the Swiss border, some 350km away!
My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Spica and I put both phone side by side with only this settings enabled and Wifi on and her phone was spot on, when mine was far far away in Paris somewhere.
This also makes the Beautiful widgets display the weather forecast for Paris when the Spica always have our location right.
What should I do? Any fix for that?
I'm using the JM2 firmware just in case someone asks. It's very frustrating I might say and maybe the aGPS is conflicting with the GPS and messing up with that too?
Thanks in advance,
JP
Well, since nobody gave at least a word about it I guess I'm alone with this problem.
Anyway, I narrowed the problem down to the WiFi.
If I turn WiFi off and let the phone find my location based only with the mobile towers triangulation then is fine. The moment I turn WiFi on, it put me back to Paris.
At least this is something that might interfere with GPS Settings overall?
Please, a word from someone with more expertise would help a lot.
Cheers.
For anyone interested. (sigh...)This problem doesn't occur in the early Froyo build.
Thanks for the heads up. Good to know. I think they must have had this bug in for a while. I was coming to this conclusion with JF3 that Wireless was somehow affecting it.
I only had to walk past my house for the GPS to say, no, hang on, wait, you, must be, over there, next to your router!

[Q] Display turns on automatically after charge

Hi XDA,
I have a serious problem with my Galaxy Note: Every night I put the note in the docking station to charge it - and every night i get woken up by the note's display which tells me "Charging complete".
Is there any way to prevent / disable this? I had this phenomenon on Stock and now on KingDroid Notemania mod. I once read something (just can't find it anymore) when I was still on stock which helped about 95% of the time (some file was deleted). Anyone know a solution for this?
Thanks so much in advance!

there are a lot of postings regarding this, please use the search function!
simplest way: if you are rooted, delete the according sound file!
Hi,
thanks for the advice TML1504, but as I said: it didn't help all of the time. Sometimes, even when I deleted the soundfile, it kept happening. That's why I wanted to know if there is any other solution for this "problem". Also, I didn't really find any solution here in the forum (maybe I've been using the wrong keywords). Could you help me out? "Screen turns on after charge" didn't really get me the results that help me.
Thanks anyways,
Mad
just google for "galaxy note disable charged notification", i'm sure one of the methods will work! also, if you remove the correct file the notification WILL be gone! regards
Hi again,
Thank you, with those search results I did it last time. maybe it was just a coincidence it did not work out all the time. I was messing around with a lot of different roms back then
Thanks again,
Mad
Hi again,
went well for a couple of days (or at least I did not notice), but this night, around 4 o'clock my Note went bright as day an told me, charging was completed. So the soundfile I renamed "/system"media/audio/ui" "TW_Battery_caution.ogg" to "TW_Battery_caution.old" (like I found on Google with your advice) did NOT solve the problem.
Anyone else have any idea on how to fix the screen flashing up in the docking station when charging is completed?
Greetz,
Mad
I 'fixed' it by installing an app called Dock Clock from the store and so I get a nice bedside clock with a not-too-bright display instead. The app can be set to fire up automatically if the phone is put in a charging dock during a set time period.
Hi,
thanks for your reply!
Does this app really prevent the display to go bright when charging is finished? Could it really be that easy?
I'm already reading post's about decompiling SystemUI.apk and changing certain values. But those are obviously obsolete in ICS and only valid for Android 2.2...

Give it a try
Use No Moar Power by Chainfire. You can charge the phone with the device off and set a time you want the device to turn back on, aka right before your alarm goes off.
Hi,
@linker3000
I'll do
@Note_E
No, that doesn't help because I want to be able to get (emergency) calls, so I need my device powered on. But thanks for the suggestion anyway!
I don't understand why Samsung would sell this as a "feature" and not make it optional...
Greetz,
Mad
I wonder if you turned the phone so the screen was facing down, would the proximity sensor stop the screen from coming on.
Or try covering the sensor with the screen facing up and see what happens.
John.

NFC scan when screen is off? - Verizon

Anyone figure out a way to use NFC when the screen is off? I'd like to be able to use some NFC tags that I can swipe over and do some Home Automation stuff, but I'd prefer to not have to turn on, unlock, and then swipe.

You must be a hoot at parties!
Unfortunately, I already searched XDA and didn't find (hardy) anything that mentioned Galaxy S5. I did find one thread that specifically mentioned the Galaxy, but not Verizon. I tried it anyway, but it didn't work. Which of course prompted my thread, in a Galaxy S5 forum, specifically mentioning the Verizon version, asking if anyone had gotten it to work.
But hey, thanks for the link to a vague search on XDA about *all* devices and *all* carriers! That's extremely helpful there!

If you know of a specific solution to for Verizon S5, any chance you can point me to that rather than just a list of search results?
Okay, I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54172523
I tested the version that is supposed to work with screen locked or screen unlocked (but not off), and that didn't work for me.
On a whim I tested the version that works with screen on, locked, or off, and that one seems to be working. So, if anyone else is looking for this for Verizon, this mod, which was technically made for T-Mobile version, should work for you.
Just go to the direct link above... no need to search or anything.

Working fine here. I've got a 2015 Sonata.
Uninstall the AA app, delete the pairing from the car and phone, then re-pair and try again from the start. But mine worked straight away.
Apply parking brake.

Tells me that android auto will start when I am parked, already parked? Apply parking brake. The S6 edge+ plus never said this so it must be a mm thing. Don't know what to do now.

I had that message on my Note 5 also. Once you get past that message, it should work every time going forward.
How?

I don't have android edge but on my 2012 civic this phone doesn't display song info when streaming music over Bluetooth like all my previous phones. Not quite sure how to fix this.

Got it to work by disconnecting my parking brake ground from head unit and replacing it with a switch that is underneath my din cover. Now I can make it think I'm in park even when cruising down the highway, Win, win!!

This is typically a kernel issue, or firmware on the radio.
My old 2013 Sonata never displayed artist/track info except for USB or an iPhone plugged in with the special Hyundai cable. After a firmware update in mid-2013, it began working, and kept doing so for every phone I had until trading the car in 3 months ago. Except for my VZW Galaxy S5.

help me understand

hi to all how any one that has the same setup will help me understand i will try and keep it short first im using samsung note 4 running 6.0.1 now
ok so here goes i use my gear 2 together with my note 4 as a trusted device you know like every time the gear 2 is close the device must stay unlocked but it does not stay unlocked and there is no Bluetooth disconnecting anything like this i look at that so battery is full the gear 2 and phone stayed together and there was no setting like disable and enabling of Bluetooth at any stage but i connect it now and its fine but after a wile (don't know the exact time here ) but say after 3 hours of no use i press the power button and it asks for my pin or fingerprint as if the gear 2 is not near but it is still on and there was nothing like it disconnecting it is as if the phone on its own make sure that it asks the finger print every now and again say like i leave it overnight the next morning first fingerprint then you can use the phone i hate this it kind of bugs me if the steal the phone and the range is to big the device will lock any way why lock when the gear 2 it near the phone any help please
honestly, i stopped reading after few seconds.
have you ever heard about punctuation? - you know, the thing that looks like dots and commas, makes reading much easier.
244 characters in 1 sentence.
wow dude, looks like you dont wanna get helped.

From the Google Smart Lock support page (https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6093922):
"Note: When you don't use your phone for 4 hours, and after you reboot your phone, you'll need to manually unlock it with your PIN, pattern or password"
It's a security feature.
EDIT: ...and, wow, yes, that was some run-on sentence!
Is there a root app to disable it or not

Ok, so here goes:
I use my gear 2 together with my note 4 as a trusted device. You know like every time the gear 2 is close, the device must stay unlocked. But it does not stay unlocked and there is no Bluetooth disconnecting, anything like this. I looked at that. Battery is full, the gear 2 and phone stayed together and there was no setting like disable and enabling of Bluetooth at any stage.
I connect it now and its fine, but after a while (don't know the exact time here ), say after 3 hours of no use, i press the power button and it asks for my pin or fingerprint as if the gear 2 is not near. The gear 2 is still on and there was nothing like disconnecting. As if the phone on its own make sure that it asks the finger print every now and again.
For example, i leave it overnight the next morning first fingerprint then you can use the phone.I hate this. It kind of bugs me if they steal the phone and the range is to big, the device will lock any way. Why lock when he gear 2 it near the phone? Any help please.

Fixed that for you
I really had to break that down to make it readable for me. But as others said, it's an Android feature. Afaik there is no way of disabling that all together. There might be some xposed module i haven't heard of, but with my moto360 i couldn't get it to work the way you'd want. Sorry mate

As the programmers use to says: Its a feature, not a bug
Some people are just plain jerks, and I wish XDA would take these "grammar police" trolls a bit more seriously and penalize them.
Perhaps OP is using a translator, or is from another country, or is young. That should not matter to any of us and we should offer our help regardless of whether he/she includes proper punctuation or not. I'm sure the effort he/she put into typing it was much greater than that of the ridiculous responses some of you gave.
thanks Crossvxm i appreciate that you came up for me its just i love the new 6.0.1 but there are a few new thing that google does not say and i thought it was a bug like my Bluetooth failing

The Note 4 is problematic all around, but 6.0.1 is a problem for every device that has it. It is the reason I left my Nexus 6P, and my Nexus 6. I have a Xiaomi Mi Max, also on 6.0.1 and it has the same major flaws I experienced on all devices running 6.0.1. The problems I speak of are the WiFi and Data stop working briefly while browsing the web, or downloading something. However, I believe this is an issue related to the security patches related to Qualcomm devices on 6.0.1. It seems like an overall radio problem.
