You will have to flash a 4.4 rom first ( official or leaked doesn't matter ) because you need to update your bootloader to run 4.4. No root won't stay so you will have to re-root and install custom recovery too. Also, you can't go back to 4.3 once you update to 4.4.

About the steps ? Bcoz i read some tutorial said that i need to flash 4 different files...That is for leaked firmware is it ?
There are plenty official rom release 4.4 already, if the official ones do i need to flash like the leaked ones?

Official is a single file you put in AP/PDA so it's easier and less confusing which files goes where.

Hey guys, I'm new here.Soon my new Nexus4 will arrive and i have some questions about installing cyanogenmod.
1.Can I install cyanogenmod with the new cm installer on this device??
2.If this is possible and i install cyanogenmod, how do i update the version if a newer one is released ??
3.I red that the cm intaller install a custom recovery too, if i dont like the cyanogen mod can i install other roms or i must do something before ??
4.If i use this cm installer i know that i will lose my warranty, am i right ?? And if yes, is there any posiblity to restore the phone to original state (i mean lock back the bootloader and others) ?
Thanks
On the same page of this forum is a Cyanogenmod Q & A thread, I would start there and READ.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
I prefer installing ROMs through a custom recovery because you can unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery without disturbing the phone's existing ROM.

1) Yes
2) In Settings there will be an update option, you can also flash ZIP by downloading them from (http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=mako)
3) Yes, you can install other ROMS and gapps from recovery.
4) Yes, you can use google's stock images to restore your phone to original state.

Not actually, you need to flash it via fastboot after installing device drivers from your computer. Which is a small tool that comes with Android SDK. (You can find it everywhere)
But I am sure there are flashable recovery ZIPs for stock ROMs on this forum.

Here's a link to WUG's toolkit that can help with your Nexus 4: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
Being that you're a noob (just like me) you may want to try flashing things with the android SDK instead of a toolkit (not saying it's bad, I've actually never used it). I just started messing with my nexus 4 using the SDK and some of the write ups here and found them really helpful and I learned a lot. Then again, if you consider yourself computer illiterate (not saying you are, your choice) you may WANT to use the toolkit. Just my .02.

By using that CM installer to unlock bootloadder and install cwm and cyanogenmod, is there any change to brick the device or any incompatiblities ?? Just take the phone out of box install that CM app on the phone and on the pc and start ??
Edit: The app is no more in playstore, from where can i take that official app ??
You can take it from get.cm

You can download app as an apk file from their site: http://beta.download.cyanogenmod.org/install
It is a Nexus device, so it is hard to brick it.
I have been using custom ROMS from first day I bought the device and I haven't got a problem. As I said you can revert back to stock ROM or just try another ROM.
No one can warrant you that everything will work and there is always a chance of brick, but not too much if you do everything right.
so just update to latest official version of kitkat and then i use that cm installer without anything to do before like root or unlock bootloader ?
Hey Forum,
I installed Graviton ROM for AT&T S4 using Safestrap but once everything finished, it went into a bootloop with a blue snake spinning endlessly with "Graviton" in the center. Anyone have any ideas?

Please provide more information.
- What bootloader do you have? Did you ever take NB1 OTA?
- What version of Graviton are you flashing?
- What version of safestrap do you have?
- If you are flashing kitkat version, are you following the Deadly Venom Tool?
The more information you provide, the easier it will be to assist.

Did you flash AT&TNB1KernelModules.zip (file present in the tool extract) along with the ROM? After the rom flash and before phone rebooted, did you put the phone in download mode and flash the NB1 ap/bl/cp files from the tool?
Also, only stock slot in safestrap works for kitkat.
If you have done all these, please provide the exact step by step operations you have done.

I'm running 4.4.2 ATT NB1 stock rooted rom. I have Safestrap 3.72 downloaded, and Graviton_S4_v3.0_20140502_SafeStrap.zip as well as the AT&TNB1KernelModules.zip. I reboot into recovery click install (on stock rom slot) and add the Graviton_S4_v3.0_20140502_SafeStrap and AT&TNB1KernerlModules zips and flash. After it fully successfully finished, I click home and boot into download mode where I flash the ap/bl/cp files from the Deadly Venom KitKat Magic Tool. It then reboots, and after the Samsung custom(with the lock), it fully goes black.

Did you wipe data anywhere in there? If not, do that. If you did, Gravitron does seem to take longer to boot first time than other ROMs so give it time.

I have been using this rom for a while on my att s4 . I recently checked out the eclipse rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351840) . Due to some problems of that rom i changed back to Graviton. One thing i really liked in Eclipse is the stock lockscree. Is there any way to add that in this rom? i tried to post the question in the rom devlopment post but couldn't. Any guide on how to do that?

There is a guide by didact74 in the VZW section, but I don't think that has been updated for KitKat. There are Xposed modules that do the same thing.

I tried his flashable zip file . That didnt work. I think that only works with stock rom. I tried xposed module . didnt work either :crying:
If it's not too much to ask. is there any chance you can make a flashable zip specific for your rom? :good::good::good:

Hey Guys,
I'm quite new on the forums, so forgive me if I ask questions that have already been answered a lot. Yes, I've read loads about 'how to root the Samsung Galaxy S4', but I just want your guys confirmation about my ideas.
1. I know for a long time now that you can use the CF-auto root to root your S4. But I'm wondering if it still works after such an amount of updates. Currently my phone's build number is I9505XXUGNG8
2. After my phone is rooted, I would like to have CWM as my costum recovery. I know that a really easy way is to install the ROM manager app from the playstore and from there, flash the CWM recovery. Again I was wondering if it still works that easily for the S4
3. After my phone is rooted and has CWM, I think I don't receive any OTA updates anymore right? (even when I just stay on the official TouchWizz rom)
If I don't get these updates anymore then what is a good way to get the newest Android TouchWizz versions? Can I just use the official TouchWizz roms from Sammobile that will come out in the future?
Already thanks to everybody who comments on this thread!
I hope that I can teach other people also something new.
Anyone?

1. Yes
2. I'm not sure. I always flash first non stock recovery with Odin.
3. Yes, You don't get official updates anymore. If You use latest rom from Sammobile You will loose root. Instead You can use prerooted stock roms easy to find on S4 forum. Or alternatively use any of custom TW based roms. Imo Omega rom is closest to stock.

If all you want to do it install a custom recovery and root the stock rom, you might consider just flashing Clockwork Mod Recovery in ODIN. Then using ClockworkMod to root the phone directly from recovery. It's 1 less ODIN step and it gets you to the same place.

Thanks for your reply! That is exactly what I want to do.
Just to be sure, should I do it this way?
1. Download CWM_6.0.4.7_Non-Touch_GT-I9505.tar
2. Flash the CWM_6.0.4.7_Non-Touch_GT-I9505.tar file with Odin v3.07
3. Download UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip
4. Boot into CWM recovery and flash the UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip from the external SD-card (Because I would place it on the external SD-card)
Then I should be rooted right?

Yes.
And you can replace the version of CWM you mentioned with any other recovery that makes you happy, as long as it's a .tar install file for ODIN.
Why the non touch version?

Thanks A LOT!!!
I prefer the non touch version, because I'm then just a little bit more confident that I don't misclick because of touch (although that probably won't happen) and I think that the volume keys are therfore just a little bit more accurate to navigate with,
Also, if I have CWM installed and rooted my phone, can I then just install ROM manager to keep my CWM recovery up to date or do I have to flash a new one to get an updated version?

Ok, use TowelRoot.com to root the phone, and use TWRP manager to install TWRP on your device. After that check out the development section of this very forum and flash any ROM you wish. 4.2.2 or 4.4.4 or 5.0 or anywhere in between (Just read the thread and instructions first!!!). Whatever you do, never update using the OTA updater on the stock ROM! Also, dotn ever flash an image in Odin that isn't MDL, because if you go higher than MDL, you lose the ability to have a custom recovery. You are one of the lucky ones, cherish the ability, and read through threads before flashing, stuff. Good Luck!
Also, you don't have to worry if the ROM says safestrap compatible, because you don't have to use Safestrap, you can have TWRP instead (which is better), because all Safestrap ROMS are TWRP compatible, but not vice-versa.

Most if not all. They're all built from either GPE or CM.
All good advice. Plus when you root and get Twrp recovery installed do a backup thru Twrp (Nandroid) and keep on phone and put a copy on pc. That way you have something to restore if you get in trouble. Also, your bootloader is not unlocked. No Att i337s are. Instead devs use an exploit called Loki-Doki to bypass Sammy's security checks to allow custom roms/kernels etc to flash. You can google Loki Doki and read up on it. If the rom or kernel is not loki'd you will have to flash the zip thru recovery to allow the rom or kernel to flash. You will come across this when flashing International roms and kernels. I don't have link any more so maybe someone else can link it. Keep it on SD card. Like noted read OP carefully and last 20 pages of rom thread. Builds newer than MDL are blocked by Att from using Loki and require SafeStrap. Which you don't need to worry about. Although you can read up on it. Good Luck. [emoji1]

I hope you won't mind me jumping in your thread.,
I've recently had to odin my mdl phone back to stock. I haven't done that in a long time. I have root, and supersu, and busybox. The TWRP Manager app is malfunctioning and I cannot use it to install recovery. They list the crash I am experiencing in the play store as a known problem, and they say it will take time to fix. I have a good loki'd copy of twrp but the stock recovery doesn't want to install it. I even changed the name to "update.zip" and it fails. So my problem is I need a recovery. I am considering installing Clockworkmod's ROM Manager to install their recovery, and then using their recovery to install the good loki'd twrp that I want. Does this sound like a good plan? I have been away from this hobby for a while.

ROM manager didn't work. It said it installed cwm recovery but it didn't. I was able to install the latest TWRP with this ROM Installer and it worked like a charm! I then installed my custom TWRP from there, rebooted recovery, and installed Danvh's Google edition. I'm setting it up right now. I'm so happy to get my phone back. I just hope the odin flash fixed my problems.
To the OP try ROM installer to get your custom recovery going. Also if you like simple and fast AOSP check out Danvh's google edition rom, but stick to 4.4.4 for now. 5.0 is out but its buggy. Here's a link to the custom version of twrp that I use. https://www.dropbox.com/l/iDQQqlzNbyiFbQrMF4XcRc It's already loki'd so you can flash it if you have any problems with the latest build.
