[Q] Need help unrooting - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I rooted my phone because I was tired of all the bloatware. But I never actually got around to do anything else with my device (I didn't flash any custom rom)
So my question is. How can I do a full unroot of my Samsung Galaxy S4 gti9505. I want to be able to update to kitkat, and that is not possible with my rooted device. I tried to do an SuperSU unroot, and that removed root from my phone, yet, it still says that my device has been modified.

After you did your unroot. You have to do a system reset in order for things to get back to normal. So backup your data and go for it then update.

[Q] Restoring phone without root. N00b Q.

So I got my Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 version a week ago.
Managed to root it using Chainfire's Auto Root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219803
Then used odin to flash CWM based rocovery, version i9505-cwm-recovery-6.0.3.2(0611). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2279579
I backed up everything using ClockWork Mod recovery.
I then went on to flash Android 4.3 after finding that it was a stable build. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342362
I didn't like how it drains battery, so I wanted to restore my older files. I went into CWM, went to restore phone, and got a "Can't open directory" message and that it didn't restore.
My question is why is this happening, and how do I fix it?

Unroot Note 3 Questions

I currently have a rooted SM-N900W8 telus with Knox 0x0. I want to unroot it and go back to stock firmware for testing purposes. I downloaded my stock firmware from sammobile. Everyone states to just flash stock back onto phone with Odin. I'm worried that 1 or several of my root apps will stop my phone from booting properly (eg. Wannum exposed) back into stock. Am I best to uninstall my root apps before going back to stock? (I'm under the impression that flashing stock will not wipe my phone). Side note - I currently have all knox apps frozen, OTA off and all my data is backed up.
My plan was to:
adb into download.
Load/flash stock firmware via Odin
Fully boot into android.
And then factory reset from within android.
Or am I best to factory reset before loading into android for the 1st time after stock flash? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Went back to stock 4.2.2, how do I update to 4.3 stock? (won't let me update)

So basically I went back to stock by "TAR files to flash MF3 via ODIN" and now I am on 4.2.2 stock. I don't really need root and just want to go 4.3
What I want to do is go 4.3 but it won't let me, it says I am up to date even though I am on 4.2.2.
It also won't let me update via kies...how do I fix this?

Ok so I have a rooted 4.2.2 mf3 S4 and I want to factory reset it because it's pretty laggy if I compare it to my gf's s4 which is also rooted.
I didn’t do the odin root, I used this method to root my s4

Is there any easy way to factory reset without losing the root?
I got a few more questions
Is there a way I can go to 4.3 root from 4.2.2? What would happen if I update to stock 4.3 or 4.4 (when it officially comes out) using the AT&T software update, will it brick my phone or will I be ok?

ODIN root method is for the I337m only anyways, so it wouldn't have worked. If you do a factory reset in the stock recovery, it doesn't touch the system files at all so you should still keep root. I'd make SuperSU a system app first though. You can get the 4.3 OTA through the software update menu and as long as you activate survival mode in SuperSU and you haven't made any changes whatsoever to the system files (besides root), it will run just fine.
Nvm got it! thanks
Bump! updated OP

Back to Stock - Will Odin wipe?

Guys,
So I'm on CM12.1 - all great and what not, but I've had enough, and want to try a fresh Stock install. I've downloaded the latest 5.0 build from Sammobile
My questions are
1. What happens to root?
2. What happens to KNOX 0x1?
3. Will ODIN wipe clean the storage? [I expect it to wipe all installed apps, but will it wipe local data? i.e do i need to move 10gb+ of stuff and then move it back?]
4. Will I be able to get OTA updates?
5. Will my recovery still be there? TWRP currently.
6. Will there be a modem/baseband problem with going from 5.1.1. to 5.0 ?
Cheers
Usually when you flash to stock, you want to preform a factory reset to clean and clear the system.
Root should be removed.
KNOX counter is invisible but should still be tripped.
You will be able to get OTA I believe ( not sure, haven't had one in a while).
Recovery will be lost.
I did not have any problems with my modem/baseband ( I think it resets to stock)
+1
Right, cool.
I get that you should probably clear the lot out to start fresh. But I'd still like to know if Odin will do it for you or not. So the internal storage, if I left a folder in there called XDA with a file called XDA.txt and I ran the ODIN process to get back to stock - will I boot into a fresh stock TW install and then find my XDA.txt file still there or not?
Cheers for your time guys!
I think it should be there, but the phone will boot in a crazy way such as no ui. In order to even use the phone after a factory flash you need to make sure factory reset it.
Maybe if you connect it to the pc you will be able to get in and save your data, but I highly doubt it. Be cautious as sometimes the phone can get stuck in a boot loop until you factory reset.

your XDA.txt file should be still there.
Many users are finding it difficult to root Lollipop.......Even with CF Root......
My advice would be to flash a KitKat firmware, root it and then Flashfire to Lollipop (and use Flashfire to inject root to the LP firmware)......

OTA update issue after stock rom flash

Hi guys,
so flashed a stock note 3 rom for EE in the UK to remove the effects of the root and custom rom I had.
Flashed via odin, all went ok.
Went to update OTA to more recent version and it says system has been modified. Sure enough under settings/about device/status it says "custom"
my question is, is there a way to change that to official so i can receive OTA updates?
ive googled and seen a few solutions that didn't work.
I tried removing SD card, reboot and wipe cache - didnt work.
Also tried using xposed, tells me im not rooted so cant do anything
Finally tried SuperSU unroot option, told me again, not rooted.
Any help please!!
Ben
