T-mobile 3g/H+ switch delay/lag - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a lag that takes 3~5 seconds for data to connect.
I am using PTEL, which rides on T-Mobile network.
The symptom is that, when I am Tmobile 3G/HSPA and trying to connect to internet from cold, I have to wait 3~5 seconds.
When the phone is idle, the icon stays "H". When I am trying to pull data, it takes a moment to change to "H+" and starts to pull data.
For example, when I open an article, I have to wait 3 seconds to connect to H+.
After finish reading it and try to load another article, I have to wait again to connect to H+.
My friend has Verizon LTE and when I use her phone, I am amazed how quickly I can browse through just like when I am on my computer with strong WIFI.
This is annoying and makes the battery drain.
On wifi, Nexus 4 can idle for hours and only lose 1% per hour.
But when it is on 3g, even when it is idling, it loses 10% per hour.
I think this 3g/HSPA lag causes the phone to be awake longer then needed to sync data.
I notice this because, sometimes the phone hangs forever waiting for data pull.
In that case I had to exit out of an app and go to chrome and try to access any website.
That helps other apps connecting to internet.
It seems that when I search about this connection lag, most of them have T-mobile.
I am wondering if anyone had similar issue and found a solution for this?
Is this also happening for folks who have Tmo LTE?
By the way, I am using Nexus5Experience rom and have left network configuration default.
I have apn that PTEL recommends which is "wholesale".
I tried "fast.t-mobile.com" and "epc.tmobile.com" and both have worst result than "wholesale" apn.
Thanks,

3G instead of HSDPA while sleeping?

As we all know, Galaxy S has major issues with the battery life, one of the biggest hogs being the HSDPA data connection. From my experience, HSDPA drains 5-10% per hour in standby on my Galaxy S, while the WiFi connection drains almost nothing during a 3 hours standby. So I was wondering why doesn't Samsung thought of replacing the HSDPA with 3G or even 2G (GPRS/EDGE) while the display is off? HSDPA should be active only when the connection is used by the user and not the background services like gmail sync. Push mail notifications work with slow connections like GPRS so why not give the battery a rest? Do I have a point and if I do, is there a solution?
on my phone HSPA is only on when I use data. It switches to UMTS (3G) when idle. My provider doesn't have any legacy GSM/EDGE network.
Yeah it would have to be a bit more configured than that, with screen off and data idle - for example I stream internet radio and constantly have the screen off, with 3G only speed there wouldn't be enough overhead for it to stream consistently.
Just turn data network mode off on the power menu? Puts the phone to 2g for voice and text....

Mine doesn't work this way. After leaving the phone idle for at least 30 min, when I turn it on, the H is already active. I dont think it switches so fast from 3G to HSDPA. I'll monitor it for a couple of days to see if it falls back to 3G in sleep mode.
Turning the data connection off isn't a solution, at least for me. I want the background sync to work, but not on high speed, because it drains the battery faster.
That's a nice idea indeed. Practically, however, I have 2g all the time and a widget to enable 3g/h when required for browsing etc.
Thats a really good idea. I have tried looking for a widget that switches 2g 3g but can only find widgets that provide a shortcut. Maybe some day...

Simultaneous Data/Voice

Here is some strangeness that I'd like to investigate.
When I'm on a voice call, data usage is strangely inhibited even when on Wifi. The market will report network errors, and when it does download an app, it will never install the app while on the call. Other apps that use data are either non-responsive or extremely slow. For example, the Engadget app will display text, but not images. As soon as the call is ended, all returns to normal. Again, this is not over 3g/4g, but Wifi enabled and active.
As an additional datapoint, over the same Wifi network, my laptop gets 12.63Mb/s down and 1.36Mb/s up while my Atrix gets 2.4Mb/s down and 1.4 Mb/s up.
Is anyone else having reduced and/or null data traffic while on voice, even on Wifi?
speedtest seems fine for me on WiFi. Not quite the max bandwidth.... my connection is 15Mbit down and it comes in around 9... but not bad either way. Upload bandwidth seems right about where it should be on WiFi.
As for the data use while on call.... i dunno. Never used it when i used my iPhone that i can remember.... and haven't had my Atrix long enough to even think of doing so, so i wouldn't know about that one.
Well I haven't tested data use while on a call, but as for the wifi data speeds...I've never once used a phone that received as fast a wifi signal as this one. My home modem usually connects at around 15.5Mbps. My phone speedtests on WiFi at 13-15Mbps. That's *amazing* for a phone.

[Q] Force N1 to only use HSPA

Even while tethering, my N1 (CM7 nightly, 5.08 korean radio, T-Mobile USA) jumps back and forth between H and 3g. I understand that HSPA is supposed to be a 'temporary link' according to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12159174#post12159174
1. Is there a way to force the N1 to only use HSPA during tethering?
2. After about 30-40 minutes of tethering (lots of HSPA usage), my phone drops from H to 3g and remains there for a good 30+ minutes. Then it comes back to HSPA (tried rebooting, tethering/untethering, etc..) - is this something limited by T-Mobile? It always happens after about the same usage..
Thanks!

tmobile network seems to configure their phone differently than ATT. tmobile, the phone will sit on 3G until data transfer takes place, where it jumps to HSDPA to transmit, then goes back to 3G. so i think your phone is working normal. test it out and post the results.
there was an app before called Network that let you set it to whatever you wanted
i cant find it on the market anymore tho
I'm pretty sure it's the networks themselves that control this.

I agree. My experience with T-mo is that it sits on 3G (or UMTS, according to the status screen) until a data transfer needs to take place, then it turns to H (HSDPA) and transmits and recieves data.
I have also noticed that its because of this that it sometimes 'hangs' with the 3G up arrow on.

Only using data/internet with 'H' or 'H+', not 3G

Something strange I've noticed with my Galaxy S II is that data / internet will only work if the 'H' (for HSDPA) is in the status bar, but not with '3G' there...the green arrow will appear next to the 3G when I try to connect to something but it will just time out unless it happens to switch to 'H'.
Anyone know why this would be? Is only the HSDPA network working with my phone, but regular 3G won't?
It is possible that the 3G cells in your area are fully loaded with users.

nvm
i didn't read it well
Same problem here, on 3.
Wondered if it was the phone or the network! If it's a problem with the phone it'll be fixable/covered by warranty though, right?
Same here, it sits on 3g then i try to load a page etc and it goes to h like it carnt use 3g , im on t mobile and they have full coverage where i am

I found an older thread that says it's a feature, keeping the phone in 3G mode to save battery until you do something that requires data which switches it over to H. I've kept a closer eye on my phone and that does seem to be what it's doing, usually taking a second or two to switch over each time I use data.
However, there have still been some times where it stays on 3G and is unable to load data.
Yeah i think your right and also it does not change sometimes and kinda hangs, be nice for it to switch over to H abit faster without battery drain.

I have the same issue with my phone to on t-mobile, not working on 3g then working on H.
It is a right pain to be honest.
No way of stopping this battery save? I would rather use more battery.
It's the network. I have no explanation but only Edge and HSDPA work whether on Samsung or Nokia.
Just tested, this does not occur for me, at least right here, right now. Comfortably loading pages on Google with just 3G signal (T-Mobile UK).
It's faster when I stand on my bed upstairs for HSDPA but 3G does work. Stock firmware from T-Mob, no modifications.

Hey mate,
I have the galaxy s i9000, with optus here in sydney. same problem, only switches to "H" when i make some sort of data request (load a page, open an app that uses internet), it takes a couple of seconds to switch from 3G to H. Sometimes, it keeps flicking back and forth between 3G and H like its having problems connecting to H
I complained to optus, they reckon i'm lying. Go figure.

Sorry.. just to add on, i've tried about 13 different modems on my i9000 and it happens with all of them.
The only fix I've come by? dial *#301279# and disable HSDPA altogether thats the only way my phone will actually load any data on 3G
I have the same thing, but as i understand H and H+ are the highest form of 3G, not a different thing. So I am wondering what mode we are in when 3G appears. UMTS?
Its all very annoying to be honest.
None of my other phones have this problem as they always stay on HSPDA
Same problem here to the extent that pages fail to load on 3g and come up with the error then when I refresh the page once its on H it loads straight away.
Actually this problem is making my phone more or less not usable.
I use the slingplayer alot, keeps skipping on the Galaxy S II as it seems to keep switching between H and 3G.
Put the sim card into my ZTE Blade (Orange San Francisco) and streams constantly with no problem with signal staying on H.
With all the threads relating to 3g and connectivity issues..we can deduce that SGS2's modem really sucks big time..and still no firmware update to correct this even though large number of people is facing some sort of problem with mobile internet which is a main function on todays smartphone.

Anyone know who to e-mail with examples at Samsung?
I guess they won't fix a problem if they don't realise there is one.
Some people will prefer longer battery when its on 3G then H, others will want the constant H.
I got mine a week after it released. The first two updates mine did the same thing, but instead of timing out, it would drop all signal and display the circle. After a reboot signal would come back. From KE7, it has not done it again.
AT&T in the U.S.
same problem, mode switches around when using data, 3 australia

Refresh network (operators)

I'm using a provider which offers national roaming. This means if my network provider (let's name it A) doesn't have a (good) signal, phone switches to another network provider B (for which they have a contract). While on network B, I can call, SMS without limitation, but I'm limited to EDGE while using the mobile network.
It works ok, but there are some cases when I wish to change network faster.
For example - I came to the shopping center and in one part of it, the phone loses signal with my network provider A. It switches to provider B and then often stays with provider B (on roaming) too long. Even if I came out of center where my provider A has 4G, phone still uses provider B ... often quite a long time.
I can go to Settings, but it is quite deep and you can't create a shortcut to there. And it also takes quite a long because of the phone checks for all networks in surroundings.
What I want is just a simple jump to my provider A as quick as possible.
Any idea? I saw some apps on Google's Play which refresh network. Maybe this will be a solution.
Probably there is a setting for refreshing somewhere on Android system?
Turn on airplane mode until the data indicator goes away and then turn it back off
Interesting I have the same problem. I always change manually which is very annoying

Thanks.
I'm sure that I have tried this in the beginning. And it didn't work (maybe I change the state too fast and phone didn't disconnect the first network).
I will try this again when the described problem occurs again.
I have tried with airplane mode today (for about 10 seconds), but if reconnect again to roaming provider. After a minutes or two, it automatically reconnects to my main provider.
I didn't look at the phone all the time, because I was driving ... so I will try with this again.
I have tried again (different location and time) and it doesn't work. It simply reconnects to roaming. If I stay there for an hour or more, then it will reconnect to the main provider. Quite annoying.
