I've noticed that Leo is somewhat wide, and still it has same resolution as other phones.
It has resolution 480x800, which is width=0.6 * height.
That huge Russian review states that Leo has display dimensions 88x56 mm. That makes it 0.63 * height. Which would mean the pixels are not square, it is 5% wider.
That is not much and it would be hardly noticeable. But if you rotate the screen, it will be 5% in other direction, and the difference would be 10%.
Question is .. is it noticeable ?
At least it should be measurable. If you have Leo, could you recheck my theory ? Display perfect circle or square (such bitmap should be easy to make on PC), and use ruler to measure the width and height on Leo's display. Also try that in landscape mode.
If indeed the pixels are not square, I'm interested how is it noticeable. Especially on people it should be visible, especially if you switch from landscape to portrait and back. On portrait all should be wider, on landscape all should be thinner.
88x56 cant be correct cause it is not 5:3 and this also imply a 4,1" display and not a 4,3" one ^^. Conclusion: The values arent correct . The pixel are squared.
It's probably not that noticable, or rather doesn't matter as soon as you get used to it. The pixels on my laptop (Thinkpad SL500) aren't square either, but as soon as you get used to it it's no problem

Good point. Still .. what is the real display size ?
Leo surely seems wider aspect ratio then my current Xperia, which has the same resolution, and perfect 0.6 ratio.
I searched for some pictures on google and measured the aspect ratio on them, and it looks ok. So the impression comes probably just from the fact that Leo does not have hardware keys and the part above display is quite short too.
Good ! Eh .. now I simply HAVE to buy it, right ?
to be 4.3in diagonal (109.22mm) AND be square pixel at 800x480 the lcd size has to be 93.65mm X 56mm.
Is is that? i don't know, but it would fit in the frame reported at 120.5mm x 67mm.
I just held a ruler next to my screen and measured the screen. The size is 56x94. The are approximate sizes no exact measurements...
Thanx, that makes this non-issue.
Has anyone noticed that texts on Vibrant are not very sharp, and you can notice the pixelation easily?
Comparing Vibrant and Nexus One side by side, N1's texts look much sharper. I know that DPI of Vibrant is higher due to the larger screen, but I didn't think it would be this noticeable.

They both have PenTile displays, and S-AMOLED display has the panel much closer to the glass.
I noticed the sharpness issue too. I can't really explain it but it was looking as if the default text on the Vibrant had edge enhancement applied and there's a halo'ing effect on the letters. This was taken care of by switching to one of the included fonts. The font I'm using now does not have this problem.

dpi and screen size are two entirely separate attributes. we're talking apples and oranges. they are not related.
While I will chime in my $0.02 as well, let's not make this yet another "pentile is crap" thread, there are plenty of those already. One of the first things I do on every new phone I look at is to pull up engadget in landscape in desktop mode, completely zoomed out. It's a very familiar website to me and I can get a good sense of how much screen real estate the phone offers and how legible small text is. I was amazed on the EVO 4G how legible very small text was, and I noticed right away on the Vibrant that the same text was rougher and somehow interpolated. While the EVO screen is somewhat larger and text is thus fractionally bigger, the difference was still noticeable. However, I still got the Vibrant for several reasons:
- it's the only large screen Android phone on TMO, and probably will be for a while--I'm quite SICK of waiting
- I want to stick with GSM carriers, and AT&T doesn't have anything better either
- the EVO has other issues, such as pretty bad battery life and possibly the detaching screen problem
- quite frankly I only read zoomed out sites for a quick overview, to read full articles I always zoom in a bit. Despite having perfect vision, even on the EVO reading an entire article or two at such tiny text sizes would get tedious after a while. Once zoomed in a bit, the Vibrant looks perfectly fine and non-distracting, at least to me
- the Vibrant has other things going for it, such as incredible contrast, better battery life, an awesome camera (yes, even without flash), and quite frankly the highest performance hardware out right now, until the 1.5GHz or 2GHz devices come one
To sum up, ALL the current phones out require one or more compromises of one type or another. Determine for yourself which ones you can live the least with, buy the corresponding phone, and quit reading these forums to prevent buyer's remorse ;-)
Post a pic side by side??
vibrant text sharpness
i read somewhere online when i updated my nexus one to 2.2 that it had a fix for sharper screen resolution and it did look better after the update so i imagine when the vibrant gets the update the screen will look just as sharp as the n1 if not better

Because the DPI, "Dots per Inch" is exactly that; a given amounts of dots per an inch of space. Could be on a 5 ft screen or a 1 " screen and be the same.

Indeed, so if two displays have the same number of pixels but different physical dimensions, then they also have different maximum possible DPI.

I think he was referring to the op and his quote here
"I know that DPI of Vibrant is higher due to the larger screen"
This is not always true cause a smaller screen could have a higher dpi then a larger screen because it's running a resolution that provides it with such. Just like the Iphone 4 dpi is higher then the Evo's dpi even though it's a much smaller screen.
I just read a 350 page book using the Kindle app. I thought the text looked fine. Maybe it's time to pay a visit to Lens Crafters...

100% correct and yes this is what I was trying to point out. For me coming from a g1 its a huge improvement due to higher resolution.

if you get a chance to try an HD7 for yourself and compare the lcd with the focus you will see some Ghosting on the HD7 when flicking the screen in the Home and App screen much like comparing a 60hz lcdtv to a 120hz lcdtv
i thought the tmobile display i played with in the store was defective because i could clearly see a ghosting effect which has been confirmed by friends of mine who own the HD7
now that pentile display driver is easier to bear with
As the days goes on and i look at that smartphone that i want it, of course, i ask myself (for the start) if is an optical illusion or i see right and what is about i talk:
compared wiht LG Optimus G, the screen is same but resolution could not be really same, cause a little space down is eat by the capacitive buttons (see in picture of Engadget review, below, or here: http://www.engadget.com/2012/11/02/nexus-4-review/)
So, the ask is, Does the display on LG Nexus 4, really 4.7" and 1280x768 resolution if 15% of that space is capacitive buttons and dont show anything else ?

The LG Nexus 4 do not have capacitive buttons. Neither do it take up 15% of the space.
Google posted the spec themselves, they would not lie about it, that would result in a class action lawsuit.

The important detail is that when watching full screen videos, the buttons auto-hide and you can use that screen space.

Oh, so I did, derp
Maybe 1200x768 then
The buttons take up 96 pixels vertically on the Galaxy Nexus. Assuming the same size, that leaves 768x1184 "usable" resolution at 4.45 inches.
so the screen is not 16:9 anymore...but 15:9 -->1280x768 pixels
so if we play a 720p video in landscape,we will have a black bar up or down the video?

With the Nexus 4 I would say put the onscreen keys in the bezel area. (Where the hard keys would go) It would make it a 5 inch screen in theory but at all times you would have the full 4.7 of screen real estate to use.

no... im pretty sure he said he wanted a screen with a thinner bezel on the bottom so that with the on screen buttons, it looks only just bottom heavy (in terms of black)
There seem to be a lot of confusion about the screen size of this device due to google including the on screen menu buttons to the advertised screen size. I have made a lot of research on this topic and contacted several testers and here is the deal... Similarly to the Galaxy Nexus, the 4.7" full screen mode (without on screen menu keys) only activates when watching videos. No other apps such as games, gallery or browser support it. The external dimensions of the phone are those of any other 4.7" phone, but the usable screen never exceeds 4.45" due to the on screen keys always present, except for videos. 16:9 videos, due to the aspect ratio of the N4, will have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, and won't be truly full screen either, but with a better 4.6" diagonal... Note that if you happen to shoot photos or videos at native screen ratio you will then have black bars on each side of your TV. A mod was made available for rooted Gnex to hide the on screen buttons and use them only when needed. Without it, the N4 is a big phone with a small screen compared to the competition.

That's perfect! I think a study showed that the ideal screen size for the average hand is 4.5" and that's pretty darn close and just right under it!
The left over screen size is perfectly fine and the fact that the soft keys auto hide make it much more convenient when doing things such as watching videos. The size of the screen makes me a happy camper!
hello everyone (sorry about my bad english)
I bought Lg g2 d 802 (international), everything stock..not even rooted and the first unusual stuff I saw was "Content Adaptive Brightness"
but i get used to it now. The other thing i wanted to ask here is image persistence of isp screen.
I saw some tablets with ips screen suffering from this...also some samsung lcd Tv-s from 2008-9, and i found
it in my phone...when i surf internet, facebook for a couple of minutes (lets say 5+ minutes) and after that i enter
picture from my gallery that contanins medium gray color in bottom od full screen view i can see shadows from
dock sensor buttons (back, home & settings). shadows are temporary and disapear after few minutes, but as the main
buttons are always on you can see them in full screen of medium dark grey picture every time after usage of phone.
I love this phone, camera, battery, & other fast hw are simply amazing for multitask, and usage, but wanted to see if i'm
alone experiencing this with g2 or not?

I think our screen is not amoled so does not burn out
Really did not see this on LG , but definetky it was priblem for Razr i
LCDs too have burn-in, but they are far less susceptible to it than OLED displays.
I had several SAMOLED devices, now I have an IPS device... and in almost 5 years I never saw any burn-in whatsoever.
I know that OLED and old plasma screens are prone to burn in
And i have 4:3 samsung 710n tft monitor for 10 yeras without
Problems, but my question is about lazy pixels of IPS screen.
Can someone test g2 the way i described in my first post (10 minutes
screen sensor bar on, then enter gray picture in full screen)?
I'll put example when a reach desktop later.
Cheers

I have this phone about 15 days, and i have the same problem. Can you resolve this ?
LCD displays are totally IMMUNE to burn in the same way AMOLED and CRT displays are completely vulnerable to it. This type of burn in us caused by phosphor wear over time. It just won't EVER happen on our G2s or any LCD display.
What you're referring to us called image retention and is a completely different. beast all together. If you notice thus occurring on your phone or TV, etc, then turn the display off for 24-48 hours and any retained images should be gone.
It's rather difficult to get a LCD display to do this unless you try (or game all day straight and the game has static elements in it) but none the less it happens. It's not a "G2" thing.
Very very rarely I hear stories where a LCD display has decided to permanently remember images and even keeping the display off didn't solve anything. I've never had a first hand account of this though so those people either probably mistook a fauly display for image retention, or it's an extremely rare occurance.

But its normal ??? I can only see if i search for them, idk if go to the warranty or keep it.
Yes it's normal. If the image doesn't fade out over time though it's not normal. Our screens are LCDs and this is common for all LCD displays, TVs included.
Plasma and OLED displays have it worse because the phosphor wear on these can be permemant. I used to play a certain game hours and hours each day on my old Galaxy Nexus which had an AMOLED display and I eventually had the menus permanently burned into the display.
Since our G2s use a LCD display though any image persistence we may encounter should fade away once the screen is off for a while. If it doesn't then no that's not normal. Most image retention issues should fade away in a few minutes, but rarely it may last up to a few hours to a few days.
Unless you keep your display on a static image though hours and hours on end, this shouldn't be an issue. If any retention doesn't fade away after having the display off for a while or if it commonly happens without having to try to make it happen then you might consider a warranty replacement.
There's a ton of information regarding this if you search on "screen burn in image retention oled lcd plasma" in Google.

Yep Same Here, i think all LG G2 suffer from this problem.
Thank you.
Np ? All G2s,...all LCD devices. LCD tech kind of plateaud so manufacturer starting developing AMOLED displays. LG seems to have made great improvements though with their LCDs and I'm glad they chose this route as I prefer LCD to AMOLED any day.
AMOLEDs may evolve to the point where burn in isn't an issue, much like how LCD displays when first introduced suffered from ghosting that was so bad it wasn't even am option for anyone who games. With
today's LCDs ghosting, much like the real thing, kind of faded away into the VAST.
I guess in the end it all boils down to each person's individual tastes.

Yeah the IPS LG monitor is susceptible but just because it is doesn't mean you'll ever see it happen. People in the Apple forums are always asking about why their Safari url bar remains once the app is closed. These people must be on Safari all day every day lol.
Most often you'll see it on displays in places that keep a TV running all the time with like CNN running (restaurants, display units in stores, etc) . Just because it can happen doesn't mean it will. It's something I never worry about while using LCD displays
