Poor call quality - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys/girls,
I'm facing a weird issue: while making outgoing or recieving call I get alot of static sound and calls sound like I'm underwater. I live in a large city with good signal, the phone wasn't tampered with since it's brand new, a couple of weeks old, but whatever option I pick for the sound quality during calls, the sound ends messed up like in 3 out of 5 calls. I'd like to stay on stock rom, and I'd rather not return my phone since I'm prett sure it's software related since my brother has the same issue. Oh, and the issue is persistant wether I use headphones or not.
Thanks for any suggestions. :good:

Call quality - seems a little 'tinny' to me?

I've just received a Mini S and so far fairly pleased with it however I'm fairly disappointed in the call quality - I currently use a P900, C500 or 6630 and all have crystal clear call quality, at least on the speaker end, the C500 seems a bit dodgy in less than perfect reception. With the Mini S it sounds almost like there's a slight vibration at the top of the phone, when I use it on speaker phone it's fine.
The reason I ask is that I would like to know if this is something I simply need to put up with, or if it's something which would be better with a replacement Mini S.
Thanks,
John

This is exactly what i thought! I came from using a couple of motorola's (which i thought were excellent quality). I have had my Mini S for a month now and you get used to it. Soon you wont even notice it.
if the slight vibration is the same thing i notice its because its too loud for its speaker. its a known issue and they're resolving it with the next rom update (imate is atleast) lets hope they don't tone it down to much.
this is an ongoing issue with imate.... i mean they had the same thing with the imate jam where the sound quality was really bad and they carry on with the wizard...
can't they do something right for once.........
Thanks very much for all the responses, your replies were just what I was looking for.
My main problem is I'm still within the cooling off period and trying to decide whether to keep the Mini S or not - I only have a limited contract so I can't make long calls on it, my other sims are Vodafone and Orange but I can't unlock the device unless I'm keeping it so they're no use.

Get a headset
My advice would be to get a good quality bluetooth headset. The call quality is much better so it's not a reception things AKAIK. Plus, you are safer on the move.
Yes.. Just picked up a Jabra JX10 and the quality is very clear.
First, the o2 branded mini s is already sim unlocked - well, mine was.
I also found the ear speaker sounded bad compared to my K700, also everyone I spoke to said "Are you in the bathroom?" So the mic must sound equally as bad to others.
I've got used to the sound on mine now, and with tomtom navigator, a 2 gig memory card and all the o2 software gone, I'd not change it for any other phone out there at the moment
Also, the sound quality improved on my bluetooth headset when I did a firmware flash, just seems louder now than before.
davebo: I do have a BT headset so I'll probably use that, I was fairly sure it was a speaker issue as the quality seems fine on speakerphone
a1laserboy: Interesting, when did you get yours? I did ask about the lock status and was told it was locked, but an unlock tool was available here, I'll check with my Vodafone sim later - that would be great if it was unlocked.

I find the call quality fine to be honest. If you want bad quality calls, use the samsung E720. Now thats bad !
Johnmcl7, I got mine 3 weeks ago from an o2 shop. I am also on Vodafone. I just poked the voda sim in and away it went. You'll need to get your gprs settings sorted out (I got my local voda shop to do it - and sold the salesman on getting one on o2 data tarrif  after I left the shop, he called all his friends to tell them, then went and bought one)
Incidentaly, I asked the salesman in the o2 shop if I'd void any warranty by flashing/removing o2 software, and he said it will not effect it. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the event of a claim.
I'm feeling rather daft now - I did ask about the lock status on another board and was told they were locked, so I didn't test it. However, I popped my Voda sim in this evening and no problem at all, it booted up and logged onto Vodafone - just finished a 40 minute call with my brother. Although the call quality is not great, as mentioned here you get used to it quickly which is why I wanted to try a longer call.
Thanks again!

agreed, I had a E700 before this and the sound quality was real bad in anything less than perfect reception, voices kept breaking up.
This phone you can get used to as long as the speaker volume is not up too high. when it is i am noticing this problem, if you want it that loud you should use the speaker fone as this can cope with the volumes you maybe pushing the earpiece to!

Static Noises In Call

Hey guys, I have had my Touch HD for a little less than a month.
I am extremely happy with everything about it...
But a couple of days ago, I started experiencing a static type noise during calls only. It seems like there is an interference or something every time I place a call.
I have never dropped it since I got it so I know I didn't break anything.
I purchased a Squaretrade warranty when I bought the phone. Do you think that I should send it in? What do you think is the problem?
Is is it on incoming, out going or all calls? Have you tried using the headphones that the phone came with? Do you still hear the noise with those???
I am having the same problem. Is this a hardware or a software issue?
I am also getting some static interference noises on calls only , only had my phone under a week , would a firmware upgrade fix this or is this a hardware fault?

It is on both incoming and outgoing calls.
I tried the headphones that came with the phone and I don't hear static with them.
Also, when using the speaker phone, it does not make any static noises.
Any takers?
Yep mine has static too, it can help a bit to hold the device high up since the Aerial is at the bottom.
I had the same problem. Only heard the static when using the phone to my ear. Never when using a bluetooth headset or the speaker on the back. I tried several hard resets and phoned HTC. I've since sent the handset back. I'm waiting to hear if they are giving me a new handset or a refund as I had only had the phone for 5 days.
I done a load of searching and couldn't find anyone else with the same problem. HTC said it was a new problem to them but it looks as though there are a few of us.

Please keep us updated on what they have to say about your situation.
Hi,
Im still getting that static noises , Also getting it when im playing audio on windows media player , Ive also tried core player , still same , so it's not the windows software , I reckon could be a hardward fault.
i have a orange htc touch hd .
does any1 else get these noises when playing any audio ?
I'm thinking the problem is hardware related. Seems like something is loose, connectionwise.
Whenever I hear the static in call, and kind of jiggle the phone around or press the screen and back together it goes away for a little bit.
I am going to take advantage of my warranty I believe.
Well I dropped my phone today and it appears the static noises in call have disappeared.
Hehe well I'm not trying that one out I also have the statice noise in call but its only at one person and its always the same one :\
So maybe I should drop that person on the floor
Onboard Speaker noise / crackling
I've had my HD since Friday, and I'm having the same noise. I hear it as soon as I press send and intermittently during all calls. When it goes away, if I stay really still, I don't hear it till I move. Really irritating for an $800 phone. I called the guy at the phone store where I bought it and he told me to call HTC.
i have the same problem .. sometimes the noise disapear when i press on battery cover, anyone found a solution for that problem

Intermittent Popping / Zapping sound during calls (internal speaker)

Apologies if someone has posted about this, but I couldn't find anything.
I have an infrequent problem during phone calls, where there is a popping/zapping sound that comes from the internal speaker. It doesn't sound like normal reception difficulties so much as an electrical zapping sound from the speaker itself - sort of like the speaker is short-circuiting for a split-second (the zap is very brief).
The weird thing is, though, if I make a Skype call it's far more prominent/frequent - suggesting that it might have something to do with the quality of connection.
I don't have any issues with my bluetooth headset or handsfree.
Anyone experienced something similar?
I have it sometimes
Hello people!
I believe I have the same problem as you guys and it has become more severe till yesterday. It has become more difficult to listen to people but for just one call about an hour ago it became normal again but just for a while...
I have bought the phone about 25 days ago and I'm sceptical as to whether I should ask for a new device.
What do you all think?
Does this problem persist for you?
How long have you had your DHD?
Thanks in advance
For me it's bearly a problem. Happens almost never. I have my device since November 11
its a big problem and not limited to just the HD. It also occurs on the Z as well. It never happens on a 3g connection just on a 2G call. I returned my HD because of this, purchased a Z because i thought it was limited to the HD but it wasnt;( I have now sold my Z and awaiting the release of the Nexus S. It really has put me off HTC phones for life;( You wont get this problem if you are living in a good 3g area.

Poor call quality - does your phone suffer from this issue?

Hi there, with two separate LG g2 phones, I've had the same very issue where when placing calls, I get really bad noise coming from around the headpiece area of the phone. It sounds almost like the typical interference you would get when you place your phone next to a pair of speakers.
I've never experienced this in any phone before - ever. I'm just wondering does anybody here on the forums with the international version face this very same issue? To test it properly, start a voice call - you need to be in a very quiet room and there needs to be complete silence on the other end of the line (although you can still make it out slightly when a persons talking) Thanks.

Try a different SIM from a different carrier and place a call to a different phone, with a different carrier, in a different place.
If you have the same results, you've got yourself a bad phone. If not, at least you know who to blame: your carrier.
no i can honestly say i do not have any problems with call quality both in receiving and making calls,no noises in earpiece or headphones,no audio problems at all im on international model on 02 at the min i also use orange or ee sim in it as well and no faults,i do have all the silly settings like flip your phone and answer as you raise phone to ear stuff switched off ? anyhow thats how mine is -maybe a fault ?
I've noticed that the buzzing isn't always there (even on the same number) I think the phone only starts to make the noise when it's connected to cell tower via edge (2G) When the phone is connected to H+ tower, it's all gone

I have bought ze520k model..me too facing this audio problem
Same here with ZE552KL on 4G i have really bad quality. When I had Galaxy S5 there wasn't any problem...
This is alarming. DOn't see much support on the matter?
I got same phone as far as now. I have no issues with it. Been using it for a month.
Had issues with system getting stuck and everything freezing. (due bad memory management). An update 2 days ago solved the issue and now everything is working perfectly !
Got the same issue, ZE520KL, seems to happen only with normal phone calls. Data was enabled, but I was connected to WiFi, so I'm not sure if it's related with data connection.
It sounds like talking through a walkie-talkie with low volume.
Additionaly, I noticed some kind of background noise filter that turns incoming audio quality down in WhatsApp and Skype calls. It'd be really good if someone came up with a flashable/Xposed mod to get rid of it.
I send my Zenfone to the local service and they said that everything is ok... But still when i'm calling from Galaxy S5 quality is much better :/
I have upgraded it to nougat and I don't have any issues with audio quality when making phone calls, which is fine the sound is still clear enough for my ear.
If you compare it for ex to Samsung S5 it is really bad

It's true, I confirm this. The audio of the conversations is too low!
Is it possible to change the file system on a rooted phone? I don't know, maybe changing some parameters, even if it distorts the sound a bit?
Just sell this piece of .... I just bought Galaxy S8.
