[Q] should the note 3 be freezing like this under load.?!? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a SM N900 Exynos running android 4.4.2 factory non rooted device.
I have bought it from an authorised samsung dealer not even 3 months ago.
I have noticed the phone freezing under load, like i had 4 downloads open on UC browser each of 200mb and was listening to songs via earphones on the native music player also had musixmatch open. At this stage my phone became very hard to control kept on lagging to a great extent till the point i pulled down the notification bar and system ui stopped responding and screen went off and only the capacitive keys were lighting upon touch, no haptic feedback. I had to restart my phone.
I have noticed this a lot whenever i have a lot of things going on, well this is an octacore device with 3gb ram. This shouldnt happen ever. It should be responsive all the time.
Also if i open a few number of apps and press the home button to go back to the main screen, the phone starts lagging. Shouldnt the memory management be good like the phone closes the unused applications by itself whenever ram is low instead of me going to recent apps and clearing some of them to regain performance.
Anyways i have some 128 apps in appdrawer including the system apps if thats any help.
Thanks in advance any help would be greatly appreciated.

The device comes with 3GB of RAM not all available to the user. First of all you have an Exynos device so you have 2.7gb RAM. I believe that they opted for a bigger RAM choice for the system to handle itself excluding user input.
So essentially you have half of the RAM to use for your other applications (1.35gb).
Anyways, have you tried clearing tasks in Task Manager? Stopped junk apps from wasting start up memory? If you have, then you really should reflash stock or Factory wipe, in order to see which apps you reinstall to prevent unnecessary slowdowns.

Are you using power saving mode while multitasking?? if yes then turn it off and try again, another tip is that phone are like mini laptops without fans they need to rest from time to time, so try to restart the phone or shut it off for few min, then test again, good luck.

Yeah you should check for this too ^^ (sorry not trying to tell the quoter but I have more to say)
I have over 650 applications installed (including system) and have no problem with lag, I even have Hyper fluency enabled on my launcher which makes it use double the amount of recommended RAM to make it look and feel better. No lag.

My phone runs good without lag, but after opening a good number of apps it slows down. Then i have to manually open multitasking(holding the home button) and swipe away a few apps. Shouldnt the phone automatically exit some apps when running low on ram?
Well as far as i know no one exits apps after using them, after they are done using a app nearly everyone uses the home button instead of exiting the app.
And no, no powersaving mode is enabled.

Just last month, a friend of mine had a problem similar to this: the phone responds to button press but there is specific period of time that the screen won’t respond. We ended up replacing the digitizer. It is a piece of glass on top of the display panel that conducts touch commands. Digitizers come with their respective circuits that when messed up, some, if not all, screen functions won’t work. But it seems that your problem is not the digitizer, so try booting to Safe Mode and observe the phone’s performance while in there.
If the screen still freezes randomly, some of the core functions may be causing the problem and there’s no other option but to perform factory reset but first, back up all your data.

Since i bought the phone in around 4 months the phone has frozen under extreme load only twice. Would you still recommend a a factory reset?
I observed that if a lot of apps are running in the background and phone starts lagging, I just swipe away a few apps from the multitasking area and everything works fine thereafter.

GT-i9000m has been locking up recently to the point of removing the battery.

It went from extremely rarely doing it to three or four times just the other night in the span of a few hours. I can't reproduce it on command but it happens when I lock the screen and put it in my pocket. Then sometimes when I take it out it is entirely non-responsive, even the power button doesn't work. I have to remove and reinsert the battery.
It could be ADW Launcher or WidgetLocker since those are the only two programs always running, but I was hoping someone else experiences a similar issue. It hasn't happened when I normally lock it yet though, so it could also be the proximity sensor maybe?
Having the same issue (on Bell as well), but not running either of those two apps. Was almost to the point of returning the phone and then installed JM7 and it's been better, although not perfect. Last night it locked up with NoLED displaying an icon, so I've deleted that app to see if that's the issue. It hasn't locked up today, but it did reboot a few hours ago seemingly at random.
Your internal sd card might be failing like all the other i9000m phones I see on this forum bricking themselves .

Oh, that doesn't sound pleasant at all...
I'm outside of Bell's 30 day exchange period plus I've talked for over 30 minutes, so I'll have to go through Samsung if it completely breaks. On the plus side, a phone from them should be three button recoverable.
Although I can't be without a phone for weeks, I hope it's not the SD card.
Mine Lags like crazy once every few days till the point I need to restart it. Any idea why this is do?

Hold your horses people....
before you jump about the lag, and or one click lag fix and such
first you have to investigate what is running on your phone.
just over the weekend (since XDA was down) i stalled over 400 Apps
my phone slowed down to snail speed, then i ran my Startup Manager software (many to choose from)
I suggest Startup Cleaner 2.0 then uncheck everything, leave only the apps that you want to run during start up
reboot your phone and presto, fast as new!
if you can find version 2.1 of startup manager that one is even better
keep note, start up manager apps are not the same as task killer apps
it only run once during start up, and it helps you easily select what should and should not run during start up, so it doesn't stay in memory after it runs
on the same topic
you should also configure your Task Killer apps to kill everything, and add only the wants you want to be running to the ignore list.
that will keep the phone working smoothly even without the "one click lag fix"
i'm still running stock on my JH2 i9000m

All gamer has a good sugestion here BUT we are going to get people flaming the fact that Android shouldnt need task managers.....
Ho hum..
TBH in my experience, I have found (after a couple of hard resets) that there appears to be a size limit for installed apps. Once I get over this size limit, I get LAGTASTIC, phone slows to a snails pace, then I remove a few of the apps and I am back at light speed again....
I cant say what the limit is, but I know when I have hit it - I would then uninstall a lame app or two and get back running.
Yes a lot of people "claims" that, but yet you do a search in Android Market, you see LOTS of Task Manager / Killer apps for every phone.
they were not designed for Galaxy S, they were designed long ago for all the other phones that had and still have the same problems of memory management causing lags
Android is not robust enough to survive without one
heck not even Windows 7 or Windows Mobiles phone
I just read that possibly the phone freezes while trying to find a signal. As this problem has only recently started, and I just recently moved into university, and many buildings receive little to no wireless signal, I think it's more than a coincidence. I'll try going to plane mode before entering lecture halls and basements.

i don't think that is the case with the Galaxy S
however back then my Treo 650 did suffer from that.

Upset with Bell Gingerbread update

I updated my phone to Bell Gingerbread 2.3.4 last week but it seems to me Froyo was much more responsive and was simply... better!
Here are the problems I've been dealing with:
-Scrolling the front pages from left to right on the home screens are not as fluid and the screen touch response seems it has a certain delay compared to Froyo.
-In the Music app, when you are in an Artist's album and you want to go back to the previous page (by clicking the back button), it directs you straight to the first artist on your list.
-The battery runs out faster
-The phone always has trouble getting 3G data connection when it enters an area that has network after being in an area without it.
-Updating apps from the market is soooo much slower than it used to be and it always messes up because the same app is downloading 3, 4, 5 times simultaneously...
-In the Gallery app, when in Landscape mode, let's say you scroll from right to left, you have to wait till the animation stops so that you scroll back the other way... If it hasn't stopped scrolling, it will not respond by swiping the other way.
-The start-up takes FOREVER to load and it always gets stuck about a minute or two in that "Dual-core Technology" logo...
-When calling someone, if you press the power button to avoid false contact between your face and the screen, when you finish talking and you want to press "End Call", you have to push the power button once more to re-open the screen.
I understand all those points are minor problems, but they're numerous and it upsets me that a phone with this much hardware capability isn't getting the proper update. I dunno, I just want to know if you guys have been dealing these problems as well, and if you know what I can do to fix them, it would be great!
Thanks in advance!!

the most upsetting one is the battery life. I could go for 2-3 days without recharging the phone. Now I can barely do 1 day. And I'm a really light user. I dont have data plan and just use wi-fi where availiable. I think its super weird that this update made the phone worse.
The only saving grace is the addition of zoom on camera and separate notification cancel. Thats about it.
I have not been facing any of these issues. For the battery, completely drain the battery until it dies and then charge it to 100% without unplugging it. Also, if you are a light user and are not on the phone all the time, I suggest using Maximum Battery Saver as the battery mode. Right now, I am running Bell GB with both suggestions, have 40% battery remaining and have been on the phone for over 16 hours on medium usage. I actually like the update quite a bit.

It's common knowledge. A lot of cache/files get left behind after an update that are no longer needed, or old copies when it should have new ones.
It's always recommended after you do an update from either OTA or Custom Rom that you do a factory reset to clear out any old data that might cause issues.
Titanium is one of the best. Doesn't backup your SMS though, so you'll need another app for that. And only restore the apps you've downloaded and their data. Don't restore any system apps or you'll be back in the same situation or worse.

Really slow Note 3

Hi guys,
I just purchased a Galaxy Note 3 a week ago. However, I'm noticing that this phone has a major problem (at least, I consider it a problem). Turning the screen on and off has a bit of a delay.
To show what I mean I made this video in which I use a Desire HD to compare it with.
You can clearly see that the Desire HD turns on and off immediately, however.. the fancy Note 3 has to wake up, make a pot of coffee, read the morning news and then decides to switch on the screen.
Is this just my phone? Do more people experience this? Why does my phone do this?
I don't have a second Note 3 and I'm waiting for somebody to test it with. So I'd like to know how other Note 3 owners experience this.
There are many other things about this phone that really disappoint me, but this is one of the things that annoy me the most.
(p.s. I already tried a factory reset, didn't chance a thing...)
Thanks you for any replies/help.

Something up there mate my phone is on soon as i press the button
my guess is ...
that its "some form of lag" caused by an app ??
have you got Svoice enabled ? /
or otherwise its some "app setting "( eg a launcher/camera )
that power button functions , is also assigned to and causes delay ??
Further have you check Svoice settings ?
it does sometimes cause lag as it waits for second press on "home button "
i disabled it completely /otherwise uncheck in S voice settings.
have you tried to wake phone with home button press, not power button.?( any lag ? )
i use Sview cover to open cover and note 3 wakes up straight away !(use no power button at all )
but if i press power button ,wakes up ....immediately !
same with me pressing home button, wakes up ..immediately.!
(No lag at all .)
(but above then,is my experience in tracking " cuplits/apps " responsible for various lags on my phone
The result is my phone is very, very smooth ,no lags or hiccups....
I have the N9005 ,stock, not rooted .
good luck.
Thanks for the replies guys.
I don't have any launcher apps running. I like to keep things smooth and optimized, so I turn off everything I don't need. No Air Gesture, No Svoice etc.
I've been playing with this the last week, and haven't really been able to find anything.
However, I just wanted to delete some stuff and reset some settings and removed my SD card to be safe. Since I removed the card, it seems the screen reacts a bit faster....
But does that make any sense? Could there be anything that could cause this lag/delay that has to do with the SD card?
My current card is a 16gb class 2. But I can't find any info on why the phone would slow down when a slow SD card is used.... Just doesn't make much sense.
In the meantime I continue testing and trying. Others have said that there might be something wrong with my phone, but when I compare stuff with other Note 3 tests, then it all seems ok. Installing an app takes the same time, opening a heavy app too, starting up is just as fast and even after a full factory reset everything seems to be fine.
Mine has a bit of a delay too...I was wondering if it was only me. With mine it's pretty erratic though - sometimes it takes a full second or so to activate the screen, while other times it comes on almost instantly.
I did notice on many occasions using the home button to wake is quicker, plus it's generally easier to get to one handed.
p.s. do you have the Verizon variant?
Good to read that somebody else noticed this to.
In the mean time I have been testing some more. After disabling almost anything that could have to do with either cpu usage or lockscreen usage, removing the SD card, removing the sim card, deleting many apps and using a very low res image, the phone becomes almost as quick as the Desire HD.
There is still a difference, the Note 3 is still a tiny little bit slower, but it has been improved.
However, if I need to do all this radical stuff to make a 2.3 ghz powerhouse perform the same as a 4 year old 1 ghz calculator.... then this phone is just not worth the money I spent on it.
Very, very dissapointed.
After my testing I applied all my previous settings, apps and such to a phone from my friend. Just like you said (siciliano) there is a noticable delay. An erratic delay, but still noticable. Sometimes it's really quick, other times it's really slow.
My Desire HD has never shown any delay... not even when I'm downloading 5 apps at the same time (which makes it quite slow).
This phone will go on for sale tomorrow. I'm not gonna spent 600 euro on a toy that can't perform the way it should.
p.s. No, it's not a Verizon phone. I bought the phone, without phone-plan or anything. Just the phone itself.
Hi,
I think it's very safe to assume that if you think there's a problem then there likely is. Sometimes you have to turn the question round or switch focus... scratch your head all day about 99 maybes yet you have 1 factor that swings it.
Certainly when it comes to testing leave things out like memory cards or SIMs. Sounds like you have and it's not happy. All might not be lost though. Perhaps the stock firmware didn't load well. Have you tried updating OTA or via Kies or Odin? And was the device bought from a regular vendor?
Jonty.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I just checked mine - same delay. So I restarted it. Now no delay.
@jonty, I got the phone from a well known Dutch re-seller (phonehouse). Unfortunately my results and/or problems seem to be repeatable, which makes me believe that it's not just my phone.
I h aven't used any other ROMs, but I did give it a factory reset (twice in 2 weeks...) and I have swiped the cache. Both did not make a difference.
Even better, right after the reset, the delay is bigger then when I optimize the settings (which means turning pretty much anything and everything off... stripping down the phone via settings).
@Bulbous, how did it take you to get the delay back again. I've tried restarting a few times, but after +/- 5 minutes the delay was the same again.
I just don't understand why a powerhouse like this phone has so much trouble with such a simple thing....
It's like asking Einstein to tell me 1+1=? and then he has to take his calculator out....
If you experience lag like this something is wrong. Note 3 should have no lag at all. I have about 150 user apps adding to the stock apps and have never experienced any lag whatsoever.
If you do, you have fu..ed up your phone somehow..
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
slight delay like 0.5 sec to 1 sec is ok cos it is normal as the phone required to enter deep sleep. (google to understand it)
any more than that might be faulty software or hardware.
if i were to encounter such problem, i will first remove the sdcard and reboot..if not fixed, then format.. without sdcard inserted, reboot and try again.
if not fixed, then i would send to SC ask them check.
the reason i remove sdcard because the phone might still scanning in the background.

Although unfortunate it might just be that the device is defective. Although it's new it can still happen.
But before you go the repair/replace route you should at least consider installing any OS updates if there are any and perform a complete wipe. Then see how it performs before installing any memory cards or other software. Perhaps also install a system info app (afterwards) and make sure the chip, cores and other spec are what they should be as fakes do exist.
Jonty.

try this method maybe will help u http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...-note-3-lags-sometimes-slow-here-how-fix.html
Something is wrong it shouldn't be that slow, comment above is useless as it's not an animation.
Flash the latest stock firmware - if that doesn't help I'm clueless to what could cause this.
Its the sd card...I used a class 2 and I had lags..changed to a new class 10 and everything was instantaneous

Can anyone confirm this? This could very well be the problem because I know for a fact my sd card is very old.
I'm gonna buy a new 64GB sd card soon anyway, so I'll make sure it's fast.
I had some delay when turning the screen on/off, but im pretty sure that something was corrected in one of the multiple firmware updates that i have installed because i don't have it any more.

Just out of curiosity, are you rooted? How did you go about updating?
Thanks!
My phone is not rooted, I'm using stock room. I was talking about official Samsung firmware updates. Running version MJ7.

Heavy lag

Hi guys,
Has anyone noticed heavy lag and freezing when using the phone. I don't have a lot of apps installed and i have disabled most apps that i don't use and the phone is still giving me issues.
Any advice is appreciated. [emoji4]
I switched from RAZR MAXX HD and this phone is a space rocket in comparison to my old Droid. Have you tried factory restore? Then if it lags - I would try to return it to Moto.
Check CPU utilization. Maybe some app hangs on. I've noticed that noozy (music player) lags like hell when album is over and player remains in notification bar.

I have the same problem, I tried to removing as much as possible automatic start calling but often when I uncheck the receiver this puts me "failed" in Rom Toolbox, I have tried Xposed Auto Boot module, but I do not feel that it works.
But for me, I have a lot of app instaled and my UI is very modified (Nova Launcher, Gravity Box, various Widget), so I know why he lag, but I still find it overheating lot and that's what most do slow.
Hi, I am having same issue. My configs was same as you, @Trinytix, but I had uninstalled all of them because lag issues. And now I continue to have same lag issues. When I use the standard cam for five minutes it become freezy and lag and sometimes I lose some photos. All the time it is burning. Just stops to burn when I leave it without work about 30 minutes. I think the problem is the snapdragon 810 but in other foruns some say that the problems with this processor was fixed.
I've been having similar issues, I got really into theming (using nova prime) the last couple of months and at the end of January the phone started to really lag hard. A couple weeks ago I stopped being able to open any apps other than the phone and google's messenger. I tried to factory reset from settings and could not (device gets stuck un the power down sequence), so I went the recovery mode route. reinstalled a fraction of my apps, put back a much stripped down version of my theme, and things were mostly ok, if a little laggy. However, the phone insisted that there was no SD card (internal or external) despite there being a 64GB card, which would sometimes show up when viewed in settings, some apps (podcast addict) were able to access the internal memory, but others couldn't (cameras, sms, photos, music). Yesterday the keyboard ceased to launch for more than a split second at a time, and would not take any input (you would not believe how infuriating this is unless you've experienced it first hand). In an attempt to regain some functionality I started uninstalling everything that I don't consider vitally important (bus app, podcasts, messenger) couldn't get through more than 1 or 2 at a time because multiple windows would stack telling me processes like "motorola" "android" and "media" had stopped. I did succeed in stripping away all the automation apps and theming apps (tasker, nova, icon packs, etc). I can't even place a phone call on the first try.
Oh and to add insult to injury I have to darned green lines about 0.5cm wide now.
Looks like hw problem or system got corrupted. Try to re-flash whole system but if is hw...

Anyone having any Lag & Heat Issues???

Having Lag & Heat Issues???
Is anyone having lag issue or any heat issues? I guess I have one of the problem notes as mine has extreme lag and heat problems. I have cleared all caches and have also factory reset several times. What's weird is that the lag will come and go, but it's there more often than not. Even scrolling in settings has the jitters.
Any ideas anyone. I might be better off going through the miserable process of exchanging through the mail.
Thanks in advance for any help!
You'll have to boot to safe mode to see if the issue persists. Also, make sure power saving mode isn't on (I've left it on before).

I'm experiencing the same issues - overheating, slowing down, serious lag. It's simply terrible. I exchanged it and the new one is just as bad and maybe even worse.

My guess is it has to do with one or multiple of the apps you have installed. There is a 3 step process to fix this issue.
#1 - See if any of the apps you have installed are running rouge. Check, battery usage, RAM usage, and Data Usage to see if you have any bad apps. Uninstall any 3rd party apps that you installed that are running too much. They may just still need updated to be optimized for this new device. Also you can use the "sleep" (doze) feature in battery management to restrict apps that are running TOO much in the background. Also on any apps that are using too much data or RAM check the permissions. If an app does not need access to Data, Media etc to work properly turn off those permissions.
#2 Debloat the device. I like "Package Disabler Pro". Basically if it has Facebook, FB, or ATT in the name you should disable it. Also you can go through an disable any Samsung software you do not use as well. I would be careful about using the "disable all bloatware" button because it is not setup correctly for this new device yet.
#3 Give it some time. It you have a TON of media on a micro EXSD card then it can take a new phone a long time to index and create thumbnails for all of that information. It should speed up i about a day or so once it finishes indexing. this will also effect your battery life till it is completed.

Yeah it will break Samsung Pay though... I think it's related to the UIBCVirtualSiftkey app, but have not confirmed that. Also it does not get nearly all of the bloatware. There is a ton of new AT&T junk it does not disable as well as a bunch of new Facebook crap and Samsung crap.

Definitely. It gave me the perfect opportunity to try out the scroll capture. Let me know if you have any questions. This is what I have disabled so far without any issues. Once I get a full completed list I'll probably do a write up about how to clean up the dock ROM. I think I'm about 70% done with the list.
So far I'm getting about 6.5 hrs of SOT and about 28 his of usage.

I am not positive but I think it's the UIBCVirtualSoftkey if the doesn't fix it. Just enable all of the stuff you disabled and reboot. Then only disable what's on my list. I can confirm is working with my setup.
I'm exchanging mine tomorrow and was hoping for better news but from your experience it sounds like I may have to deal with an expensive piece of crap.

This phone lags a lot especially in Chrome and other scrolling apps.. sometimes switching between apps takes lot of time too...I have been using Samsung phones for quite sometime, but unfortunately this is the phone lagging more than any other phone for me..debloated almost 150 apps, still the same..and it gets hot as well when watching videos...none of this happened for me on Note 5...I think Samsung screwed with Note7 software..when they initially released Grace UX software for Note 5, it was very smooth...but the final Note7 software seems to be laggy...the same apps and setup on Note5 doesn't give me these issues....gonna return and try my luck with new one...but good thing is battery life has been very good for me...easily 5hrs SOT whereas on Note5, I used to get only 3.5 hrs

I am exactly facing this issue..I am a heavy XDA user, so I monitor all the apps on phone and debloated lot (around 150) apps...still the same.. thing is lag doesn't happen all the times..but it starts from no where..but the phone consistently gets hot while moderate usage

When the phone is working properly, bloatware should make no noticeable difference and debloating is unnecessary.
My Note 7 usually responds instantly, with no lag, no matter how heavily I'm using it. That's with nothing disabled or debloated. (I'm using the Google Now launcher but everything else is stock/default, with no esoteric apps or settings.)
However, on three occasions in the week I've had the phone, it's gotten into a mode with serious lag while typing. In this mode, even though the characters I type still show up on the screen instantly, I can type 3 or 4 characters with no sound feedback or vibration feedback; then, there will be 3 or 4 delayed clicks and vibrations in rapid succession.
When this serious-lag mode starts, it continues even if I close all apps and put the phone in Airplane mode. It also makes no difference if I turn on power-saving mode, or even maximum power-saving. The only thing I've found that fixes it (for a while) is rebooting.
The intermittent occurrence of the serious-lag problem shows that it's not a matter of the phone being underpowered or overloaded. There's some specific bug that needs to be fixed.
UPDATE: It just happened for a fourth time. And when the serious-lag mode starts, it's not just typing that has a delay with audio feedback. The feedback delay also occurs when I tap on icons, tap on the Back or Recent-apps soft-buttons, etc. There's a delay of up to a second or two between tapping and hearing the feedback.
On the other hand, compute-intensive tasks--such as playing streaming video--work properly even when the phone is in serious-lag mode. So that's further evidence that there is some specific bug, and not a general problem of being underpowered or overloaded.

Curious, do these typing lags occur on the hangouts app?!?! It seems to be the ONLY app on my Note 5 (and all the other phones I've used) that has a VERY NOTICEABLE KEYBOARD LAG, especially with Samsung Stock keyboard. This happens even with other keyboards, but is WORST with samsung keyboard.....

No, the problem I'm seeing is unrelated to any app or keyboard. When my phone is in serious-lag mode, the problem occurs across the board. When it's not in lag-mode (which it usually isn't), then there's no lag in any app, including Hangouts.

It happens even with all apps closed, no heat, no battery drain. It's not a side-effect of the phone being bogged down with anything.
