if you thinking of buying this phone.. dont. its gps is shifty at best, unless you clock its processor down to 475 its not stable, its sound is by far the worst i have ever experienced in all my pda's and today it hit a new low, with 50% power on the battery bar i had to do a reset ~sigh~ AGAIN and lo and behold, the red light of death.. on a two week old device.
Used the stripped usb wires to charge the battery out of the device to fix it but im sure most users would not understand or want to have to go down this route everytime their phone flipped out or froze to the red light of death.

I've had this puppy for more than a year now and have never ever seen a red light of death.. (don't even know what you're on about)..
I find the sound quite acceptable and rarely have any problems with stability, the ones I do have are mostly, if not all, down to the various roms I have been trying. (Never had to clock my proc down to whatever value)
The GPS is not the best there is out there, but very workable.
Lastly, I have never ever ever had to charge my battery with a stripped pair of USB wires...
Never had stability problem
Never try to overclock it too
Mad tuners had hard life
I have trinity for about a year and half it is working just perfectly. Sound, amazing sound with bose in ear headphones. GPS works every damn time . Infact I was in canada for three weeks to travel, trinity gps was just perfect. I have not found pda that are this good. I had bought iphone too, I just liked the display, and that just all. Steve Jobs ****ed lotta people with iphone.
PS this is the p3600i , rom 3.00.707.18, radio 1.46.30.11 unbranded, no where ese to post for the newer trinity so im posting here.
must have very bad luck then, but in this very forum the bad sound issue is addressed by many people, on both the old trinity and the new one. one claims it can be fixed by tightening a screw in the speaker area, not prepared to open a three week old phone yet ) and the red light of death is common amongst older (sic) htc phone models (suggest searching forums??) , and most technicians, including the old O2 guys in Brisbane would not "repair" the device for under $200, i had to fix my xda2 red light of death with the stripped usb wires fix which incidently i got of these forums as well. The issue arises from the battery being depleted below a certain point where not even a wall charger will charge it anymore. Not that htc support will tell you that tho.
a post on the Cnet review of this device has another user quoting exactly the same problem (wish i had read that first), possibly the newer model or firmware is glitchy. I notice my battery drops from 80% directly to 50% and then suddenly 20% etc.
the gps is a lot more usefull if you underclock the device from 500 down to 475 or lower to reduce heat issues when using gps and 3g connection at same time, which somehow affects gps reception.
I still get a better overall phone experience from my old 6515! And thats saying a lot.
I suppose if your phone is a toy then its not a problem, but when you need a stable working device this one sucks for the price ticket it is sold for.

what about cpu temperature monitoring? I come from computer cpu overclocking school
This is not another thread about battery life obsession. It's more about a curiosity.
I have my Evo tuned so that it has great battery life on standby. When I use it for anything--SMS, data, local apps--the battery drains very fast.
I know that data, CPU, and display are the major consumers, but...
I have a Nexus One, with also a 1Ghz Snapdragon, and almost exactly the same loaded apps. Same screen resolution, both on 2.2. Both have 1500mAh battery. The only difference is the display technology and radio (GSM/EDGE/HSPA vs. CDMA/1xRTT/EVDO).
When used equally, the N1's battery does not drain nearly as fast as the Evo. How come? I know AMOLED is supposed be more power efficient, but by that much? I know CDMA can be less efficient, but again, by that much?
- - -
Duh! Edited from Hummingbird to Snapdragon (got confused-I just picked up an Epic which has Hummingbird). Thanks for correcting.
They both use Snapdragon, Hummingbird is Samsungs CPU codename, it's based on the same architecture but uses a smaller process.
What software are you running?
Same exact problem as OP...this baffles me.

Is it something new, or has this always been happening?
Was it after the new update or kernel WHATEVER, that you flashed?
If you’re running the stock kernel, do you think the fact that the screen is physically bigger may have something to do with the difference? I’ve always accounted the difference in the battery drain speed (between screen on and screen off) to the fact that most of us are running tweaked kernels that are overclocked when the screen on (with 5 point multi-touch, etc), and underclocked with the screen off.
The problem with battery life issues is that most of the time it can be just a perception and not scientific evidence at all.
Personally, I had an iPhone 3GS prior to getting an EVO and I would say the same exact thing happened with my iPhone. Especially when I was playing games. It doesn't seem to happen with my EVO.
Even seemingly silly things like the Battery Icon can help with the perception that battery life on the phone is bad. Since it only has 4 levels, it kind of tricks your mind into thinking your battery is draining really fast. Try flashing this.
Scientifically, The difference in battery life running the same exact apps under the same exact conditions would be almost negligible between an Evo and a Nexus one. You could even test them side by side and see for yourself.
Also, some facts:
- CDMA 3G is LESS power hungry than HSDPA when actually using it. Heck, EV-DO even uses less power than CDMA 2G(1xRTT)! Wi-Fi uses even less, so use it whenever you can.
- There's a huge misconception that AMOLED Screens use a lot less battery than regular LCDs, but in fact, that's only when the screen is showing LOTS of black color. During a web browser session with lots of white webpage viewing, AMOLED has no Power consumption advantage over LCD.
Signal is a HUGE contributor. I get about 12 hours out of my battery 3-4 out of 5 bars. I went to the sand dunes and had 5 bars and my phone lasted 28 hours.

there are some variables here - my router at home sucks, so I actually get better signal (and battery) with 3g and not wifi unless I'm in the same room as the router. Like the guy above me said, signal plays a huge part in it.

On both phones, I have a % battery gauge. I use both phones in good coverage area and have observed them over weeks of use. I would use one phone for the day, do the exact same thing, use the other phone the next, and consistently see the N1 having 20-30% more battery at the end of the day. I'm thinking of loading "current widget" to see the drain rate between the two phones.
On the subject of radios: I have seen manufatures list longer battery life for EDGE vs. HSPA and the same for 1x over EVDO. Also I [think] usually see longer standby times for a comparable GSM/UTMS phone over CDMA (e.g., Touch Pro2 on GSM/UMTS vs. Touch Pro2 on CDMA).
When one says that EV is less power hungry than 1x, are we talking about a time-use comparison or efficiency? Example: 1Mb download, 1x takes, say, 1 minute, while EV takes 10 seconds. Yes, for that download, EV took less power. But if one were to have 1x & EV both running for one minute, which takes more power? I ask because I remember seeing EV transmitting at higher power than 1x.
I need help figuring out what is unsafe temperature for overclocking mytouch 4g. I have read that overclocking a phone heats up the chips and components of your phone and frys them since there is no active cooling system but I want know exactly what tempereture is specifically bad for the mytouch 4g components and chops. Temperature that can potentially damage hardware permanently at overclocked speeds that way I can set limits on the profiles of the setcpu app
I have been wondering this as well.

Manufacturers of the processor don't have that kind of information. The one who holds that kind of information is the developer of the phone since they are the ones who limit the processor to fit the need of being in a confined space of a phone with no cooling system. I have checked both HTC and t mobile for detailed information of that in their tech sheets but there is no such detailed information.
I will have to message HTC manufacturers I guess =\
Processor manufacturers typically specify an operating range for their product. The handset manufacturers are then takes with making sure they can maintain the processor within that range, while inside the tiny confined spaces they put them in...
The tiny space doesn't change the processors operating temperature abilities, it just makes it harder for the processor to be kept within it's operating range...
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Why does the tiny space change the processors abilities if its not a temperature problem?
I looked for the tech sheet for the processor on the qualcomm website, I couldnt find it. I messaged them so im waiting for a reply. Ill let you guys know what happens.
According to this page, you should try to keep your battery temp between 32F (0C) and 120 F (49.8C). Some copypasta:
As you approach cross 120F on the battery you are actually causing the battery to discharge at a faster rate. Even if the CPU isn't putting a large demand on it.
Getting your Droid's ambient temperature (the whole droid) above 130F for any length of time should be considered a bad idea. The battery itself is the issue. When a lithium-ion battery reaches around 140F, it can enter the state of "self heating" or more commonly referred to as "thermal runaway". Reach this state enough times or holding it there too long and the battery will become unusable as the individual cells of the battery break down from thermal overload.

If the battery is that hot, the CPU is that or more easy.

Awesome find! Thanks for posting this thread, its becoming more helpful than I thought.
Although the specifications for the droid 1 might be different I cant see a new phone like the mytouch 4g being worse in that area. : D
"And remember; my subjective opinion is you don't want to see the battery go over 120F or the CPU going over 135F for any length of time. The reason for this cautious limits reminder? Lithium-Ion batteries can reach thermal run-away at 140F. The CPU can handle up to 170F but the mother board holding it and the components around it are only rated to around 154F. So staying below both will help you stay happy with a working Droid."

Are you people saying its normal .. as in a lot of people are experiencing this?
Or
saying its normal as per Motorola saying its normal?
If its the first option, I would hardly think that is safe. Ever think its a device wide ISSUE? Unless Motorola say that the device has no issue running at those temperatures, then I would really doubt it is normal.
Do you think this phone has some sort of unseen substance in it that prevents it from being damaged at this kind of temperaturewhich no other smartphone has? There is no extra protection for the sim or memory card. Which obivously are not meant to deal with excessive heat

If the phone had active cooling for the processor (like a fan, hahaha.) and it still "overheated" then that would be an issue, otherwise you're looking at a 1GHz phone with twice the cores of any previous phone at the same clock speed. What are you really expecting?
I dont agree that its normal for the phone to get hot regularly, i definitely wouldn't put up with "crazy overheating". And I dont use my Atrix moderately either, I'm constantly on it. TiBU tells me I have 417 system/user apps as an example of my extreme use. There are a couple other threads on this subject, op you should search them out. WatchDog will monitor your apps and let you know if any are misbehaving.

From Motorola:
"It is possible phones will become warmer during heavy use. This is normal behavior especially if you are transmitting data, talking for an extended period of time, or playing games or music on the device. In these conditions, the phone is transmitting and utilizing alot of power on the device which will generate heat.
Motorola phones manufactured in 2009 or later have a "cool down mode" function. This feature is designed to protect the battery and circuit board. If the internal temperature of the phone exceeds 136 degrees Fahrenheit, the device will shutdown all functions except emergency calls. When this happens it will display a cool down mode message. Once overheated, a phone will not regain full functionality until the internal temperature drops below 136 degrees Fahrenheit. Ensure you are not leaving the phone in locked cars, in direct sunlight, on warm or hot items such as heaters or radiators, or any location that produces heat that will heat up the phone."
If it gets hot while charging the battery, and doing nothing else, there is a problem.

Ok .. you showed a critical threshold of the phone. Do you think pushing the phone to excessive heats but staying below that threshold is good for the phone? Notice that it doesn't mention how SIM cards and memory cards will continue to respond when being exposed to excessive heat with no ventilation or circulation ..in fact your quote clearly says that feature is for the bAttery and circuit board
Bottom line..
you can push your phone to 130 degrees (since that's below your shutdown threshold ) and I will spread out my usage and keep my temperature down to a minimum ... and my phone WILL last longer than yours and I WILL have less issues with it.
Highest my battery has ever got is 48c
highest my processor has ever been is 63c
was the phone hot? probably.
processor normally sits at about 45-50 in my cardock as per what setcpu says
battery sits between 40 and 45 in the car dock.
Watching a movie in the car dock whilst my kid was in the car setcpu says it hits anywhere between 55 and 60.
It leads me to believe that the max operating temperature for the CPU is right at about 65c, and teh battery right about 55c.

So you are basically talking about the SIM card and memory card on all phones which are going to come out with dual core and no active cooling, cos they are all going to get hot. What Motorola has stated is what any manufacturer would and does. They have given us their safe operating threshold. Now, 136 degrees is a lot, but how much of this heat affects your SIM card and SDCard? I don't know, and you have provided absolutely nothing to substantiate your personal claims. Bigger doorknob needed I guess!
I simply responded to the OP telling them it's normal for this phone to get hot. If you want to continue down this avenue we can, but until you have something from a SIM card manufacturer and SDCard manufacturer substantiating you claims, I'm done.

Considering the memory card and SIM card are not far from the battery and are trapped under a cover... a lot of the heat would be affecting them as well. When did I say anything about dual core at all? I don't think I even typed those words out.
Point is that I don't know if most of these people are even doing enough tasks on their phones to even get TWO cores aggitated enough to put out that kind of heat. All of my other smart phones were pushed much more than this and have remained pretty cool to the touch. Even one with a metal battery cover.
I was more replying to the many posts across the ner and people I know that have the Atrix heat up too much and for too long.
As far as OP goes..
"I have had atrix about a week now and I have been having some extreme overheating issues. After about 15 minutes of watching a youtube video, according to temp monitor lite, my cpu temperature rose to about 55 degrees celsius. Is this nnormal? Or should I as for a replacement?

When you're streaming video the heat will increase, but make sure you dont let it stay hot for increased periods of time. You dont need to request a replacement unless you are experiencing excessive heat frequently.
Also, when streaming - try not to have GPS and other things like that running in the background.
Hey. Does someone you know, what is the highest (read: critical) battery and HW temperature in this phone? I am a little bit scared when I'm getting even 55*C on battery when I am using it as a navigation connected to charger in a car. I know it's too high because when it's heating over 49*C it stops charging. My question is how dangerous is such high temperature for HW and Battery? Is it normal behavior?
I never had such high temperatures, and I live on a hot country (Brazil). Try to check apps running in background, or, if you are using 3G and charger, it can get really hot. But I think it's normal, since my phone reaches 45ºC while charging, and I don't use 3G.
with 3g my phone gets crazy hot. i once left it on overnight (it didnt go to sleep) and when i woke up it felt dangerously hot, musta been 50deg or something
otherwise, with wifi it just gets warm... still worrying though, considering none of my other portable devices have ever gotten this hot before... just shows where all of the battery life goes to! :S
i dont think its the battery getting hot though, it must be the cell chip. my batt temps are usually pretty low, and the batt itself doesnt seem to get hot. its just the panel above the battery that warms up
My phone got so high temperature (55*C) when I was using navigation. Moreover it was pluged to the car charger (but wasn't charging because of high temperature) and mounted to the window in hot sunny day. And I'd like to know how dangerous is such high temp. for the device.
I wonder if we have dud phones? my battery life sucks ass... bare able on wifi, but **** with 3g
Agree with scott. With prolonged use my battery doesnt heat up, just the panel above the battery (where the camera is)
And my battery life sucks too. Gotta keep it charged in the car for even short (30 min) trips with navigation
Sent from my MotoA953 using XDA App
Try checking the manual (if there is) for operating temperatures etc.
I'm not exactly sure of how it'll affect the phone but it poses health problems due to higher radiations.
Try preventing this by ensuring all other (running) apps that you don't need are closed by using a task killer and all connectivity stuffs (eg. bluetooth, data sync) ESPECIALLY THE BACKGROUND DATA if you don't need it. Also, if possible try to refrain from covering the back panel (mainly the area near the camera) and allow ventilation to let it cool so it won't overheat.
What else I do is leaving the keyboard opened so there's even more surface area for it to cool.
The problem isn't just about damage, but that you don't want to be holding hot metal.
Yes it sucks but its a price to pay for such high specs packed in such a tiny casing.
My friend who owns Samsung Galaxy II has his phone heating up even more frequently and quickly, so we're not the only ones
Its annoying because we know its avoidable and shouldnt have been allowed in the final design by motorola
I've never seen such high temperatures with my M 2.
Highest was 47ºC while charging and playing a game. It usually sits around 35-36ºC idle, and 40-42º during games.

Yesterday my milestone 2 became hotter as ever, just above the battery (where the camera is, like newbietown). First I turned it off, but it stayed hot even then. After I removed the battery it became cool again.
But! Now my MS2 is completely dead...
It's really not turning on again, and charging is really weird (irregular flashin led). And my warranty is void because of me installing argen2stone I guess ..
Well, just flash a stock rom and they'll never know...

First get to bootloader mode: Power + Volume Up (or down) + Camera
If battery is too low you'll need to buy a relacement or a external charger.

Try taking it to warranty. Argen2Stone is so lightly modded, maybe they won't mind it. Anyway, you have nothing to lose now. And this really looks like a HW problem, not SW

Beginning of next week I will hand it in for warranty. I think it has something to do with the power circuit in the phone. Sometime i've used HTC chargers (1A) instead of the motorola charger (0,85A).. That could be the cause Hopefully they cannot see that.
I don't think that's a problem. I always use a Nokia charger, I find the original charger too short, the Nokia has a good lenght. And I never had problems with overheating. Also, 1A is the maximum current that the charger can provide, not the nominal [email protected] anytime
