[Q] MTP PTP option not displayed - Resolved - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Fixed.. Leaving this for others since I couldn't find it via a search. - It's under Mass Storage > Settings (3 dots upper right) > USB Storage Connection. Some how it stopped displaying.. I think because I unchecked both by accident?
Out of the blue, I cannot access my phone via usb. I noticed an exclamation next to "Nexus 4" under other devices. No clue what happened as it's always worked. So I've removed the device to reinstall. The device is not being recognized at all with USB debugging off..
When I turn on usb debugging, it'll show up in device manager under Android Device > Android ADB interface.
I have uninstalled/reinstalled multiple times to no avail. One thing I noticed is that I do not get the option to select MTP or PTP.. I believe I have it narrowed down to this being related. Any idea how to get that option back? I found a tip via the dialer on the S3, didn't work tho..##diag# or something like that.
Any ideas? ThADVANCEks

Q: Nexus 4 does not show up in device manager

Hi Everyone
I have a strange issue on my xp machine (windows 8 is fine). On my xp machine, when I plug in the nexus 4, the machine does not even respond, its as if it does not exist. I looked in the device manager but nothing showed up. No warning, no error, it simply does not exist to this machine. At this point I don't even want ADB enabled, so I've disabled the developer options. I just want normal MTP to show up as a drive on xp.
I've made sure that Settings -> storage -> Three dot menu button (top right) -> USB Computer Connection is set to MTP.
I'm not sure what else to try except reset my device (which I want to avoide). As I said, this is only on the xp machine.
thanks for the help

Lost the icon for media device connection

Somehow the USB symbol no longer appears when I connect my S4 to my computer. How do I get it to reappear? Thanks
Not even in the notification area?
Try this: Go to developer options and enable usb debugging. Or, if it is already enabled, turn it off and on again. Do this while connected to the PC.

USB Debugging Turns Off

When I connect to my work laptop (Macbook Pro), my phone connects as an installer. After a few seconds, it switches to a media device connection. I have the Developer Options enabled and the USB Debugging option selected, but it keeps getting turned off as soon as the phone is connected via USB cable.
It was working properly last week, but I updated to MacOS 10.10.5 over the weekend, and now it won't see my phone in USB Debugging mode.
Due to the timing of the MaxOS update, I do not believe this is an error with my phone or Android, but I'm hoping some other Macbook users may have encountered and resolved this issue. I've been unsuccessful in tracking down anything helpful, partly because of the voluminous search results for "USB debugging." I'd appreciate any help available.
I'm running 4.4.2, rooted but otherwise stock.
Thanks!
Even though no one else replied here, I thought I'd post my resolution in the event that someone else with the same problem stumbles across this thread in the future. The short version: enter *#0808# into your dial pad and you should get the USBSettings screen where you can choose from several options how your phone handles a USB connection. I ended up landing on the "DM + Modem + ADB" mode, which allowed my laptop to talk to my phone again. No clue what caused the problem in the first place, nor why USB Debugging mode itself didn't stick, but this resolved it for me. Hope it works for others, as well...

USB debugging mode does not work fully

Hello,
I have Galaxy S5 from Verizon and I am having a trouble making USB debugging working.
It is a little bit interesting that I enabled USB debugging mode and typed "adb devices" on my PC terminal, I see my device listed.
However, I do not see any USB debugging icon on notification bar. Whether I turned on the mode or not, my phone shows no sign at all. This also makes another problem that I am trying to use one of the recovery softwares but even though I enabled my USB debugging, the software does not recognize my phone. I went to my Device manager and I do not have any problem for drivers. I even re-install Samsung USB driver several times, but no help.
I have another Galaxy S4 from Verizon and I have exactly same problem. adb devices work but no notification bar icon. But when I tried out with my Galaxy Nexus from Samsung, I do not have any problem.
Could someone please help me how to resolve this issue?
Thank you very much.
Hmmm.... I have no icon for it on notification bar.
However, you should be able to see item Developer options like here (screenshot 1):
Also, you might try re-enabling USB debugging on the phone. If enabled, you should get message like this (screenshot 2):
Thank you so much Bodisson.
Apparently, my Galaxy Nexus is older version (ICS) and my other phones are Kitkat. I am used to seeing that debugging icon and thought it would do the same thing on upper version. It seems like at some point, this icon is no longer in notification bar. Though icon is not there, USB debugging works!
Thank you so much for your answer.

USB MTP/PTP Connection Problems to any computer.

Hello, I've had the V20 for a number of months now and love the phone, but I never tested out a data connection before, only to find out that when I use both the LG cable and a Anker USB3.0 cable, my phone is not able to connect to any computer. The system prompt to select the MTP or PTP connection appears, but after making a selection and the computer seeing the phone for a split second, the connection is lost and the USB prompt appears rapidly over and over again. I even went into developer options and set MTP connection always.
I tried a reboot, battery pull and capacitor discharge, and a full system restore. No fix. The only work around I have now is a samba server or moving files with the SD card manually.
Please, if you have any ideas? Does not work in Windows and Linux.
Thank you.
Have you installed LG bridge?

Did you enable USB debugging in Developer options? If no, enable it.
Change the power settings in windows for the USB.
Power options
Advanced settings
Disable "USB selective suspend setting"
Tried all the above

Yes, USB debugging works and I'm able to use ADB with my phone and both the Windows laptop and Linux Desktop. However, neither is able to reliably connect through the typical MTP and PTP methods. I finally got MTP to limitedly work with MTP when I use the LG supplied cable and ignore the USB connection prompt in Windows and Linux. I go straight to File Explorer and access the file directory of the phone. Every time I open a folder or access a file though, the phone rapidly pops up the USB connection message over and over while the file moves.
All third party cables and USB devices are not working other than just charging. In Linux, the error message in my logs is:
usbfs: process 20678 (mtp.so) did not claim interface 0 before use
reset high-speed USB device number 101 using xhci_hcd

Is this behaviour on accessing and copying? You can not copy a file from your Windows laptop to the phone?
Yes, I cannot open folder directories, nor move files from phone to computer or visa versa.
Also. Try to not let the phone screen turn off. Change display time to 15 minutes or something.. Change back when finished. GL

No change.
dbo989, did you resolve this issue? By any chance are you running avast mobile security? I was able to transfer files both ways via USB and had the pull down USB options without ever having to add USB debugging. Then I installed AVAST and USB has become charge only... none of the widely recommended solutions above will unlock USB. I see no apparent settings in AVAST so I will call them. If no resolution then I will trash Avast

No, I never could resolve it. I ended up using Samba to fileshare with home computer, but lost any OTG cable ability. Never used antivirus or security software with my phone.

Just fixed it... turned out to be the port on my PC, I switched ports and its back as it was, no need to enable dev mode or USB debug... its still slow connection... I have to look up Samba solution, never used it.
Thanks for sharing
I just experienced the same problem with the USB connection constantly cycling between being plugged in and not. Windows kept alternating between the device connected and disconnected system sounds. I unplugged the USB 3.0 to USB-C cable on both ends, unkinked and straightened it, and plugged the cable back into the PC and the phone. Hasn't made another peep for the last half hour and the phone is staying in USB file transfer mode. I wiggled the cable at the phone end and still no further disconnections. Maybe I didn't connect the cable securely at the PC end the first time.
This is the first time this has happened since I started setting up the phone this week, so I don't know what to make of it. Regardless, I need to order some more USB-A to USB-C cables since this is my only one.
USB File Transfer Issue - Resolved
Hi, I had the exact same issue with the computer not seeing the phone as far as files. I was still able to use ADB, Fastboot, etc, so I figure it was not a hardware problem. Tried two different computers as well. Every time I selected "File Transfer" in the USB settings, the phone would beep, and when connected to the computer, the computer made the usual chime. The phone would not show up in explorer still.
Previously this phone had been rooted, but I wanted to bring it back to stock. I had flashed the latest KDZ file. Then using ADB and Fastboot locked the bootloader. It seems that the USB issue happened after that. Here is what finally fixed it:
Turned on developer options the usual way (tapping build number in software info) and then turned off "Allow OEM Unlock." Then I turned off developer options. Still, no luck, so I then re-flashed the latest KDZ (H91820h) again, but this time with the bootloader locked.
After everything was done, I set the phone up again, and now file transfer works perfectly.
I did not want to chance locking the bootloader while the phone was still rooted. I learned the hard way about that, and nearly bricked the phone once before. Luckily I still had factory upload saved in the LAF partition.
Hope this helps someone out there.
Turns out it was not fixed permanently

After thinking it was in fact fixed, I rebooted the phone several times, turned off, then on, and all seemed well. Until the next morning. I turned it on, and the same issue happened again. No File Transfer mode to computer. ADB still worked. After being on for a while and getting warm, all of a sudden file transfer started working again. Rebooted, and turned on and off, and it continued to work. I figure its a bad part with a thermal issue somewhere so I put it in the freezer for 5 minutes. When booted up again, the same problem occurred until the phone warmed up. Weird? So I tried something completely different. I downgraded the phone to H91810p and tested again. It seemed to work fine. I put it in the freezer again, and the problem will not show itself. For whatever strange reason the problem appears to be heat related, and ONLY happens with the latest KDZ, Oreo 8.0 The only thing that I can theorize is that the SOC is bad, or there is a bad area of flash memory that is intermittent.
Does anyone have any clues? I am going to put it back in the freezer, go to work, and test again when I get home to confirm.
