[Q] Force close loop after platform.xml edit - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today I rooted my S4 (i9505) using Chainfire's Auto-Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219803). I was trying to add permissions to my platform.xml file so my S4 could write to SD after the 4.4.2. update.
The root itself went fine, I had access and everything still worked perfectly. But I after tried to edit the platform.xml file (using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49603814 as a guide) and rebooting, I have a lot of apps force-closing and I can't read my storage when connected to PC. I could still use ODIN however, so I tried flashing the firmware again (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=27311) but this did not help.
If I had to be honest, I'm panicking a bit over here. I'm still in college and I really had to save up to buy my S4. I would be really bummed if I bricked it. Is there anything I can do to restore the file or maybe even factory reset it? Lose of files would not matter, I have backups. Thank you so much in advance guys!

Hi, unfortunatelly I am having the same problem you describe. Were you able to solve it?. I just can't replace the platform.xml cause I did not copy it on the same etc folder. I am so frustrated

[Q] Unable to see the Clockworkmod folder in windows or on the phone

Hey guys.
First of all, sorry if this has been asked before. I googled a lot and searched here and couldn't find this particular problem.
My Nexus 4 is running stock 4.2. Unlocked bootloader, rooted and running ClockworkMod 6.0.1.9. Everything worked perfectly. My only problem right now is, after making a nandroid backup, I cannot see the clockworkmod folder anywhere on the phone when browsing either in windows or with ES File Explorer. I think by now I looked everywhere. Everything else in this regard seems to work fine, I can copy files, the other folders are all correct etc. I can also see and delete/restore the backup in CWM recovery. All I want is to see the folder to get it off the phone. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
You can find it in mnt/shell/emulated it is protected so you will need a file explorer that can give you root access. I use ES File Explorer.
Found it. Thank you very much.
Its also in /data/media/clockworkmod for whatever reason, hope this gets fixed soon.
Is there any way to copy those CWM backup folders to your computer? I tried to use Root Explorer to move the backup folders to the main sdcard/0 folder but I still cannot see it when I move the file Am I doing something wrong or is it not possible to move it to the sdcard/0?
Yeah I'm also still not too sure how to get it off the phone easily.

easiest way would probably be to just use the toolkit, unless you're opposed to such things.
Is this why ROM manager can't delte my backups? It seems them but I get an error saying "there was an error deleting your backup"
Edit: new update fixes this issue with ROM manager
man we need to get it move to a pc. i'd like to save some space since its our phone have maximum 12.9gb at our disposal.
btw, i tried Root Browser Lite to move it on sdcard area... operation failed
I had the same problem. My internal SD card just kept getting fuller and fuller with ClockwordMod. And, when I tried to copy the files from /mnt/shell/emulated/clockwork to my comp, and copy them back to the SD card to try and Restore, I ended up with corrupted files.
So, rather than fight it, I decided to wait until Clockwordmod recovery got its storage/mount point issues straightened out, and moved to the TWRP side of things. That has been seamless (once I got used to it).
I hope that they soon figure out the Clockwordmod issues; I liked having ROM Manager installed on past phones.
Btw, as an aside that is a little related, why, pray tell, are there so many mount points for the SD card? It's just weird.
just navigate the clockwordmod folder in your phone and copy it to the root of the internal memory.. connect the phone via usb into the computer and copy it
BY FAR, the easiest way is:

BY FAR the easiest way: in ROM Manager, Manage and Restore Backups>Download Backups>Open your desktop browser on the address informed by ROM Manager to download your backup.
Thanks to everyone, going to the directories works and the rom manager app is aware of the new cwm backup folder.

[Q] Trouble with screen auto rotate when rooted, or rooted ROM ?

Hello, I have just wasted about a day of my time on this issue.
Problem:
When I root my S4, running Kitkat, or load custom Kitkat ROM - wanamlite in my case, then the auto rotate screen feature stops working.
The problem is not in the HW - the camera app, which rotates labels on the screen based on orientation - kept working through all the trouble.
Details:
- I decided to root my S4, mainly to be able to install xposed/xprivacy and Titanium Backup
- first, I rooted the stock ROM, using the chainfire method. Worked fine
- I did not install custom recovery at this point
- removed few modules in TB
- noticed that the screen auto rotate stopped working
- restored the removed modules in TB, auto rotate still not working
- installed TWRP and Wanamlite. Screen rotation first worked, but after some time ( and my guess is after few reboots ), screen auto rotate failed again.
I was unable to fix this, so I had to go back to stock ROM ( Swiss FNB9 ), to get the phone working again.
Searching on Google, it seems that few of the Samsung devices have this problem of screen auto-rotation not working after rooting....
Before I try rooting again, is this a known problem ? Any fix with a high degree of reliability ?
Thanks for any info, Paul.

Wow, very much appreciated! This worked perfectly for my S4 with KitKat.
Today I noticed my auto screen rotation stopped. I googled around, tried many work-arounds, but none of them helped. A hard reset didn't work, a soft reset didn't work, Bluetooth/GPS/WiFi off didn't help, calibration using an app didn't work, etc.
I rooted my phone (as I had before, but because of the hard reset I had to root it again), installed Root Explorer, and put the libgnustl_shared.so file in the System/lib folder (while mounted R/W). I rebooted and BAM! Auto screen rotation was back again!

That fixed it indeed !! Thanks man ! I had problems pasting the file into that directory but the "root browser" app from the play store could paste it. Then changed permissions, rebooted and ... back is screen rotation !!! Thanks !! :good:

BTW, so it seems the problem is that when you uninstall samsung HUB (which I indeed did), it removes that particular file. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49604191

I have PhilzTouch installed and tried to flash the zip file severel times, But everytime after wiping cache part. and dalvik I noticed that nothing changed.
So I did the copy/paste action as described and after rebooting it worked.
Hi All,
I had the same issue when i rooted my device, and lost the rotation and use the method described here to fix the issue.
But after reboot the phone it will keep popping the message " Unfortunately, Samsung Hub has stopped" and it won't go away or let me do anything on the phone, as soon as i hit the OK button it will popup again.
Any possible fix for that, Please !!!
Thank you all.

Can someone help me with this, please... I have no idea what this means.
1) I downloaded the file
2) The instructions say to move the libgnustl_shared.so file into System>>Lib. When I download the file, libgnustl_shared.so is already in a folder called System>Lib...
3) Someone else said to FLASH via recover or something?? What does that mean? Can someone explain this in straightfoward terms? Thank you.
In that case, you should try to replace the existing file with the new one.
You just need to set up the parameters of the file (permissions into rw r r) as explained before. You can do it with ES Explorer for instance.
No need to do something else, just reboot.

changin permission parameters for getting screen rotation
OK, easy, my first question was and has been "how to change the permissions".
And alone, not being an Android Geek, I succeeded !!!
First use Root Explorer, with it copy and paste (or move) the " libgnustl_shared.so" file in the "\system\lib" directory.
Once it's done (always with Root Explorer) apply a finger on this new file, a menu appears and choose "Permissions". Then there, keep only Read on the three lines, and only Write on the first line. Then click on OK.
And reboot your system.
Amazing, it's working, like the first day and before you rooted it...
Thanks again for your solution.
thanks
works great on i9505 kitkat. don't forget to reboot
no permission
im getting this when i try to do it,
"changing permissions was not successful. please note that some file systems do not allow permission changes"
anyone know how to get around this??
cheers

Help, Deleted my Secmms.apk

Well I was trying to follow the instructions from here to turn off the auto conversion from sms to mms whenever you enter an emoji. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472009&page=5
Long story short I ended up with a non-functioning SMS app, and I accidentally deleted my backapp while I was moving things around. SO I guess what I'm asking is if people can give me a copy of there SecMms.apk for kitkat 4.4.2 (Ive tried adding previous versions but that doesn't seem to work). It should be located at the system/priv-app (you have to be rooted to access it). Thanks guys.

I'm using the stock Samsung n9005XXUEND6. I don't know how to extract it from the rom, If you can point me to a simple guide and a little more instructions that would help a lot. Or if you have a compatible SecMms.apk that would really make my day.
Factory reset is not an option for me, as I have not made any backups, and I have too many apps and setting for me to wipe my entire phone.

you can copy the rom to your desktop, and just copy it out... you need rootexporer or esfilemanager with root access, so you can copy it back to system/jpriv-app,
if you look on my signature, I have a thread in the dev section, on Samsung galaxy note 3 and tmobile note 3....
I have the roms for various N9005 phone... and the firmwares....
okay, I had to rar the file, it has the secmms.apk and secmms.odex if your using stock rom... both the files are in there... :good:

[Q] Slightly different KK SD issue

First off, HI ALL. Awesome community!! OK, so I am having the same can't write to SD issue as everyone else. I am rooted with TowelRoot and on KK 4.4.2. I have installed a few of the different "SD FIX" apps and upon looking at the platform.xml file the proper strings are there but I still cant write to or delete from EXT-SD. I have tried ES File Explorer and Root Explorer ( Donate vrs). Another thing that I noticed is that all the tutorials I have read say that there needs to be a space between the " /> at the end. My platform.xml doesnt have that, in fact, none of the strings have the space between the " and />. I tried to do it manually and got the massive force close of a lot of apps. Reverting back to the original didnt help. I had to do a factory reset. That stopped the FC issue but the paltform.xml file is the same with the added string and the nonexistant spaces. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
what filesystem do you have on your card?
Either he has exFAT or FAT32. Can you tell us your exact device model? What ROM are you on?
Thanks for the reply. Model number is N900V and I'm on stock Rom rooted.
Considering that your platform.xml file is still stock, you might want to try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
This app will automatically detect whether you need the fix or not. If you do need it, it'll do it for you.

I DL and ran app. Says not needed. Does anyone have the original file so I can start this process over? Or will that bork something? I'm a noob but I am a little tech savy. One anomaly that doesn't make sense to me is that in my xml file, none of the strings have a space between the " and />. Does that make a difference? I'm confused. lol

The whole xml is like that with no spaces. I originally used an SDFix app to do it. Never looked at it. It worked for a brief time then either I rebooted or something and it stopped. I added the space manually but noticed none of the strings had a space. Are they all supposed to have them or just to added/modified string? I did factory reset because I was getting the FC issue but that didn't reset the xml. Does anyone have the original so I can start the process over?
Try this. It already has the fix implemented. If everything else fails, you can still flash a stock rom and use the SD Fix app I posted before.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9Yi7IW9DXQsdVF0aGl0Z3lJbGc/edit?usp=docslist_api
OK. I renamed the file to paltform.xml and renamed mine to bak. Moved it to the folder and did a reboot. So far so good, no FC. Upon using Root Explorer I still get the failed operation toast when trying to delete a file from EXT SD. If noone else has an idea I guess I will just have to flash a rom and try that. I'm going to del and reinstall Root Explorer and see if that does anything. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for all the help.
OK so I dont know all what was messed up but here is what all I did. I went in to del the Root Explorer app and found that I had converted it to a sys app with TiBu. I undid that process, uninstall and reinstall. That didnt work, so I stuck SD in my puter and backed up files and then stuck card back into phone, robooted into recovery and did a wipe of the SD. Then I put a few test files back onto the card mounted by USB cable) and tried to make folder and del a diff file and it all seemed to work so all is good so far. As I am typing this I tried something else I couldnt do which was instll the XDA app. It kept saying something like it wouldnt write to the ext sd card. Well. I just installed it with no issues. Hooray!!! So I dont really know what the issue was but it all seems to be going fine now. A BIG thank you to all that helped me in this. And Nitrous, I clicked the THANKS button on yours!! :good:

FIX FOR MAC 02:00:00:00:00(WiFi and hotspot not turning ON)

Important. Root required.....
Hey everyone,I saw so many posts regarding Android & iOS that the Mac address is changing to 02:00:00:00:00 and WiFi is greyed out. None of the WiFi or hotspot not turning on.I get the same problem in my Condor and I searched a lot for the solution.I go for factory reset, full reset, flashing stock, radio etc.... But nothing helped. Some strange solution was to hit the back of the phone, put it in the freezer etc...I tried many other ways and that worked only was putting a file named
WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin
In to the folder / persist....... But it worked me for exactly 1 day and the problem still continued.
So I tried a new method which helped me a lot........
Steps
1.Take a back up of folders /persist and/data/misc/WiFi
2.unzip the below attachment and put the file WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin
To /Persist folder.
3.[important step].use any file manager to give full permission to the file(Use ES file explorer, I used solid explorer that provides more permission, if ES doesn't work use Solid explorer)..
4. Restart the phone
5. Now your WiFi will be back to rock............
If doesn't work try clearing the folder /data/misc/WiFi/wpa supplicant... And /persist....
If any thing goes wrong use back up's......
Don't forget to hit thanks if it worked......and don't blame me if it doesn't worked......
THANK YOU MASTER!
You just saved my life ..... *sighs relief*

Was looking for a fix forever until I found your post
Works perfectly
It seems that your method does work , I have the same problem with my LG V10 H961-n and I'm hopeful that I can fix it.
Should I root my phone first?
I also have a condor with the same problem, but I checked in the root directory and in the /persist folder the file " WCNSS_qcom_wlan_factory_nv.bin" is already there, and so is the "bt_nv.bin"...How should I make my WiFi and Bluetooth work ,it has been like this for months , appreciate any advice
i cant see any folder and i can't make folder in my phone how can i fix it?..
Thanx a lot bro, it work for my phone Moto G 2013
Self corrected?
After flashing the last ViperOS rom, my phone got the 02:00:00:00:00:00 physical address. The phone was still connecting to wireless lan but I wanted to correct the wrong address. Something weird happened while I was prepairing the phone to follow the recommended steps for correcting the physical address issue: for managing files, root permissions is needed... so when I flashed SuperSU and restarted the phone, the physical address was corrected... I don't know why, I don't know how...
This may help

Hey, I'm unable to copy into the persist folder. Every time it's showing permission denied. I'm using ES File Explorer with root access. Still it's not happening. I've even tried Solid Explorer but could not find the persist folder from that. Please help. I'm using CM 13.0. Any later version isn't supported on my device.
