[Q] Ktoonsez kernel - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I want to install Ktoonsez kernel but I'm not sure what version Recovery to use. Since I've seen some struggle with the right version of recovery for rom's and such. I just want to make sure I don't mess up again.
Kind regards,
Waanzin

Actually it doesn't matter, Phliz and TWRP will do it, myself is using TWRP 2.7.0.1

[Q] Weird Colors after installing Franco Kernal

Hey guys,
I'm running the unofficial Cyanogenmod 11S on my Nexus 4 and just flashed Franco Kernel and am getting weird colours now. My screen also blinks at random times, anyway to fix this without factory resetting? Thanks
Flash your rom again without Franco kernel. It's the kernel that causes this behavior. Just re-flash your current rom/nightlie zip or whatever and it should be fine.

Wrong version of kernel used
I think most likely you have used the wrong kernel or not following installation instructions.
Whenever opt to install kernel, do look into the requirements:
a. for which version of android (4.4.4 ? 4.4.2? 5.0?)
b. what type of release of android (Cyanogenmod (CM/CAF)? AOSP? MIUI?)
c. installation method and steps (some kernels required to flash on top of stock kernel)
For now I would suggest that you find out the version and release of the android that you using currently and just flash the suitable kernel for it. The way i see it, you are using a cyanogenmod (CM), a CM compatible kernel will do.

Galaxy S4 CM 12??

Guys i heard official CM 12 for Galax s4 i9505 released, i wanna install it, the problem is im a completely noob for install custom OS, never done it, im afraid i might brick the phone, can you guy guide me to do this please, current stock version 4.4.2 is very laggy :S
Thanks
Firstly, you have to be rooted.
I used this guide to root my s4. Installation instructions on second post.
Warning: Make sure you have the right model. Do not use CF-Auto-Root if you have an AT&T or VZW branded s4.
After rooting you will need a custom recovery.
There are several custom recoveries. The most popular being ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
You can use ROM manager from the play store to install a custom recovery.
Or go here and use that guide.
After rooting and installing a custom recovery you can flash a custom rom. What you need to do when flashing a custom rom depends on the rom itself. See the rom installation instructions for that.
It's not hard if you follow the guides carefully. Or you can as a friend (who is more experienced at this) to help you

You could flash the Google Play Edition ROM found here. I use it myself and it's very stable and haven't encountered any problems so far.
Edit: Only downside is that you can't move apps to sd card. It's not supported yet.

that sucks :. im a heavy app user ,anyways did your phone lagg on stock android? mine is very laggy.. its on 4.4.2
Not able to move apps to sd card is only a problem when you have the 16GB version. But I heard there is some workaround for this.
In my opinion stock rom was pretty fluid. Didn't have any stuttering. Only lag I ever experience was when changing music tracks and the home button lag. But I have the international (unbranded) version of the S4. Which means no carrier bloatware to suck up the power and performance of the phone.
The gpe rom does seem faster and smoother compared to stock firmware.

yes..
is that a prob?
edit: if i will flash stock, than kernel, and then rom- will it work?
Make sure the phone is running the latest bootloader and modem. Once that has been confirmed, perform a complete system wipe (system, cache, data) before flashing ROM, flash the ROM, and flash the kernel. Don't boot the phone out of recovery until after flashing the kernel.

thanks so muchhhhh u saved my asss
how do i check my bootloader & modem version?
I suggest flashing a stock ROM from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/GT-I9515/
Once that is done, you can flash TWRP from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/galaxy-s4-value-edition-gt-i9515-t3190176
With TWRP, you can create a nandroid backup. If you flash a ROM that doesn't work properly, boot into TWRP and restore your nandroid backup and start over.
Sometimes, you may fine a ROM that will work without further modification. If not, a custom kernel may be required.
What are you talking about? The first link you posted linked to various rom threads for the I9515.
There is unofficial CM13 for the I9515, also known as jflteve.
There also was an unofficial SlimLP..
Unofficial CM13
Unofficial CM12.1
Unofficial SlimLP
As you can see, there are some roms. No need to mess around with patchers. Unless you really want touchwhiz..

Help Installing Imperium LL ROM

Hi there to the community, im a newbie in XDA. I recently had a problem trying to installing the Imperium ROM in my Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500. Here's the procedure that I've been following to
-> I installed the Philz Touch 6.12.8 Custom recovery using Odin 3.10.0 -> I did the ''Clean To install a New ROM'' option and also a wiped out the Data/Factory -> I Started Aroma Installer and completed the wizard but at the moment of hit the ''Next'' button the Log just said ''Formating system'' without installing the files. I was able to identify this because when I rebooted the phone it goes semi-bricked. I had to put download mode and install de Stock ROM again.
Sorry if I had some gramatical errors! Im not a native english speaker.
What should I do to this?
Thanks a lot
This may possibly be wrong, but isn't Imperium a ROM for the GT-I9505? The Qualcomm S4 which is absolutely different from yours?
@Pwnycorn: No no, you're absolutely correct.
@DubstepL: Change your recovery to TWRP. Philz hasn't been updated in some three years now, and current ROMs have issues with it. Then find another ROM; one in the I9500 development subforums. Imperium ROM cannot be installed to your device.

Do you have any advice for me in my rom selec?? In your opinion.. what's the better ROM for I9500?
Whichever one does the things you want it to do. I can't give any better advice, not only because "which ROM is best"-style threads don't end well, but because I don't have an I9500.

Hi,
It looks like you have SM-G900F S5 model (Qualcomm Snapdragon / klte) with latest Polish unbranded android 6.0.1 on it.
I doubt if you are ready for flashing any custom staff to your phone as you even can't identify a proper custom recovery ....
Saying: "I'm a noob" doesn't help. Before flashing anything on my phone I was reading a lot in order to understand what I was going to do so I encourage you to do the same.
1. Before flashing anything you need to understand what is Samsung KNOX (in general, after flashing anything custom like recovery, kernel etc your KNOX flag will be triggered so if you have valid Samsung guarantee - it will be lost) - google it and read more. If you don't like this situation - stop here, otherwise go to point no 2;
2. In order to flash a custom recovery for the first time you need to flash .tar version of it via odin pc app - latest version take from here:
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s5/SM-G900F/XEO/download/G900FXXS1CQD1/130602/
(Look for headline: "Instructions")
Find out more how to flash with odin -> google it and read;
3. Your custom recovery version you can find here (I recommend TWRP):
https://eu.dl.twrp.me/klte/ (use the first file with .tar extension)
Read before about "TWRP odin install method" here:
https://twrp.me/samsung/samsunggalaxys5qualcomm.html
Now you are good to go for custom recovery flashing;
4. When you already have TWRP installed look for a custom Rom of your choice.
You need to decide by your own what you expect from your new rom. Look here for some custom roms and read their descriptions in rom threads:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5 -> look for roms compatible with your phone model inside following subforums: S5 Development (Snapdragon), S5 Original Development or S5 Unified Development.
When you finally choose the rom, install it following installation instructions from the particular rom's thread.
Good luck.
Hi Many40!
Thank you for your reply!
I very much apreciate your tutorial (it's almost impossible to screw up). Will give it a go!
Once again, thanks!!
