Tether.. unlimited data using Foxfi or PDnet - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an unlimited data or tether hack that still works? Or could you push me in the right direction?
I have had 4 phones with Verizon for about 10 years now. They screwed us out of our unlimited data a few years back by lying to my wife over the phone in order to get upgrades a few months early. We now pay close to $400 a month for the plan, we have 10GB data but due to my sons buggy Iphone5 he somehow runs through 5gb the first few days.
He is a EMT for an ambulance company and uses his phone's data for directions only. I am sick and sick and sick of Verizon screwing me.. Please help!!

There are several ways to tether, probably no way in hell verizon will give you back unlimited data. I would tell your son to turn off mobile data while he's not using it - at least until you figure out what's causing it to go through data so quickly.

Or buy a GPS for him?

There's the problem. Iphone.

[news] AT&T Pulls the Plug on Its Unlimited Data Plans

Poor att users, I'm so glad I switched to t-mo.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/197755/atandt_pulls_the_plug_on_its_unlimited_data_plans.html
The New AT&T Mobile Data Plans
•· DataPlus is the cheapest plan available, which provides you with 200MB of data for $15 per month, a much better value plan for light data users who pay $30 for the unlimited plan right now. AT&T says that on average, 65 per cent of its customers use less than 200MB per month. If you exceed 200MB in a month, you can get another 200MB for an additional $15.
•· DataPro is the new highbrow mobile data plan from AT&T, which includes 2GB of data for $25 per month, and will charge each additional GB used over this limit at $10. This new plan is designed to replace the outgoing Unlimited plan, as AT&T claims 98 percent of its smartphone customers use on average less than 2GB of data per month.
•· The Tethering plan for iPhones will work only along the $20 per month DataPro plan, and costs an additional $20 monthly. Unfortunately, this extra $20 won't give you any extra GB of data usage, as the 2GB included in the DataPro plan will be shared between your phone and the tethered device. Tethering for iPhones is expected to be available when Apple releases iPhone OS 4 this summer.

So this is only for new customers right? I'm assuming the customers already on unlimited will keep it correct?
sucks for them. $45 a month for 2GB including tethering optionis just ridiculous.
im sure AT&T will force people to switch to this plan eventually like they did the smartphone plans.
FYI, this is grounds for any current customer to get out of the ETF if they try and force you to switch over before your contract is up.
agreed I feel sorry for you guys, we get screwed with 3 year contracts, but im ok with that since I pay $30 for 6gb and that includes tethering. To pay an extra $20 and not get an increase in your bandwidth limit sucks.
Ouch.
Maybe my girlfriend's iPhone will have a tragic accident so we can get out of Dodge...
*sad face*

So is this for sure. I am on ATT right now and been thinking about dropping them and getting a new service. Either Verizon or Tmobile. Even though tmobile isnt all that great its cheaper for a 3 person family plan. AND I would be able to have my N1 on 3G. Edge really sucks.
i don't think the new ETF has taken into effect; i called yesterday and asked how much it would be to get out of my family plan, and the rep gave me numbers based on $175 and not $325; thinking about moving to Sprint (23% discount from employer plus EVO)
also, i don't think this is grounds for getting out of paying ETF since, as of now, customers still have the option to keep current data plans and if they switch, it doesn't renew contract
while this is a bad deal for those who uses data a lot, this is somewhat of a benefit for my dad's iphone (i just checked and since he got the phone, he only uses about 100mb/month) so he can save $15/month
i imagine the unlimited will be grandfathered just like the old 10cent/kb plan i used to have since like 2000
glad ive got the unlimited while it was still available, according to this tiered pricing my bill last month just for data would have been over 50 bucks.

Mmmm, considering what ATT is doing here, I'd say Tmo is great. In addition to the fact that you're stuck using Edge, which adds even more value to Tmo.

you should just call ATT and ask how much it would be if you terminate your contract; you can have an answer directly from them

I doubt it because [according to Engadget] current unlimited data subscribers are welcome to keep their $30/mo plan for as long as they'd like, so you're not being forced to change your plan.
When I first read about the change I thought it sounded pretty bad, but I just checked my data usage and I only use just over 1gb a month despite very very heavy web browsing on my phones. If I tethered often or streamed video, I might not like this plan, but I cannot fathom how much web browsing I'd have to do to go over 2gb a month.
If you guys use the wifi tethering feature, they probably won't be able to detect that you are tethering, right?
What I don't understand is how they will find out if you're tethering?
What if you're using a Nexus One on AT&T with FroYo. How would they know if you're tethering or just using your phone a lot?
yeah this stinks in a way. but all of us are grandfathered in. this is only for new customers. until you sign a new contract you can keep using the current pricing. but after that...
i've been out of contracct for 4 years now and only use unlocked phones, so i guess i could theoretically stay grandfathered indefinitely.

they really cant tell the difference. so dont even worry about it. the only thing that could give it away is if you blow thru insane amounts of data, and download things like 500mb torrents which obviously gives you away.

They can't unless they built it into the phone. So if you can get froyo on your att nexus you can tether without paying the fee.
All other 2.2 phones will be modified by their respective carriers to "check in" before enabling the built in tether option.

This is true. I have used my WinMo phones to tether on at&t for quite some time, beginning with HTC Faraday. Back then I called because I was stupid having problems getting the faraday to tether to my personal computer (The one I tested it on was fine) and the guy was like, you have to buy the tether package for $60/month to get the right cable. I was like no I don't, I did it earlier on another PC. He stammered and was like, well, if you try to access data heavy sites like youtube, it probably won't work. I was like okay w/e...hung up, played around, got it to work, and streamed an episode of Family Guy with no problems just to prove him wrong (once I let it DL. stupid EDGE). I've yet to see an extra charge for my data. (even when I was using the $10 MEdia Net package with a smartphone, which I was with the Faraday)
i going to ride out my grandfathered tmobile plan for as long as i can... $5/month for unlimited 3G data and tether/hotspot

T-Mobile 5GB Data Throttle Starts Oct.16 :-(

Got TMO Nexus owners ?
Tether or hotspot your laptop all day long like me ?
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/10/t-mobile-reducing-data-cap-will-throttle-speeds-after-5gb-of-usage
Oh no! damn. This sucks.
That's fair. No extra charges.
It is unfortunate, but it was inevitable. As long as there are no extra charges, 5 GB of 3G speed seems fair. Blame everyone who abused their connections >:|
This seems fair, at least its not like 2gb and overage like those poor suckers on ATT
Sent from my awesome Nexus One using XDA App
5 GB on a mobile device is a lot to use. Are you guys streaming HD movies on your phone or somethin??
I agree seems fair. Att is going down hill fast.
FWIW I had 5 gig tehter plan on blackberry as my main internet connection for two months. I came very close but never hit 5 gigs. This was 8 hours a day at work + pleasure.
Id rather have a choice than be stuck with either.

dude 5gigs is a **** ton... if you are blowing over that every month then you prolly need to look into using wifi a bit more often...
didn't know 10Gb cap.
how slow will it be? i wanna watch streaming video on bed.

Oh wow, that would REALLY suck. I definitely go over that easily every month. I have never come close to 5gb though. I'm on AT&T right now with a grandfathered unlimited plan, so I'm ok (for now).
At least the TMO unlimited plan is still unlimited, just at a slower speed once the 5GB is reached. With other carriers charging for overages, I'm not sure how they (the other carriers) can get away with calling it "unlimited".
im guessing this doesnt affect tzones ($5 plan) users... since when i goto my account, even if ive been using over 2gb of data that month, it says ive used zero data... im guessing this is because everything is going through a proxy

can the proxy setting be used for other data plans to bypass this data cap? I normally use 6 to 8gb per month as the tether is my only internet access.
The 5GB limit is fair. At least they don't charge you for overages like ATT. My buddy has a 200MB plan because ATT f-ed him when he tried to grandfather his unlimited data plan from ~3 years ago. Now he makes me turn on my N1's hotspot whenever we hang out.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I read that, and then read people complaining about it
I'm around 1.5-2GB per month right now and don't believe that I'll ever read 5GB unless I start downloading huge files all day! I believe this is the right way to treat customers compared to the "big two's" plan. Also, I'm a loyal T-Mobile customer for 7 years now.
I can live with 5GB limit...but they better never change it again to any lower

AT&T Gunning for Tethering Users

Please respond here if you are using the portable wifi feature of your nexus one and getting any SMS or e-mail notification from AT&T that they want you to pay for tethering.
I hear stories about people who get the "unlimited" data plan and then straight up abuse it (by providing internet for their entire household), which is probably why this is happening.
150+GB a month is what I consider abuse btw.
I don't see why you should pay for tethering. I think its just another way for them to make more money. Maybe for some people they don't wanna pay to have a separate internet source when they can use their phones as their internet source. I don't tether since atm I don't have unlimited data lol.

Should be free and only pay for data...just another reason why I left at$t years ago!
I have T-Mobile and as of right now my "unlimited" is still unlimited but once you exceed 5GB for the month is DRAMATICALLY slows down.
I just moved in to a new place with my wife and son and I'm trying to cut down on extra bills (I'm the only working parent right now) so I don't have internet, I just tether off my phone.
I just exceeded 5GB for the first time ever and its horrible. I'm moving so slow, on my phone that is, its unreal.

The only people getting flagged are iPhone accounts that are extreme abusers.
If you are abusing the service that much, then you should be paying for the higher package IMO.
I tether on my unlimited plan and have never had a problem, but I also don't abuse it. I barely break 1gb a month.

Because iOS's silly separate tethering config makes it easy to know exactly how much it's getting used. Not so simple on phones that route tethered data through the normal APN.
Yeah, I use tethering on my N1 on AT&T everyday and I haven't gotten anything from them yet. I don't abuse it, but where my house is, sort of in the woods (in Pennsylvania) where I can't get anything better than dial-up, so I use it just for basic email, Facebook, etc.
3UK now offer "all you can eat" data on Pay as you go. i plan to swap my T-Mobile SIM to my old 3 after this contract is up, i really hope the plan is still available then as i can see this being abused from day one!!
I tether my tablet to my phone almost daily, but it's pretty small usage. I am only using 300-400 megs a month on 3G now since AT&T took my unlimited away when they screwed with my account a while back. I mostly update or do stuff on wifi at home.

They don't allow tethering on PAYG. Same as Giffgaff, unlimited data without FUP, but no tethering.
I got a similar message from Cincinnati Bell Wireless, but they have not charged me. I don't really use tethering all that much.

Doesn't mean they'll ever notice you doing it, of course
XDA is no longer worth my time.
What I am having trouble understanding is what evidence is at&t Mobility using to determine if one is tethering or not.
They have a few choices, but as far as I can tell, none of them are perfect and all will have false positives.

Planning to leave Verizon (and Incredible)...

After 7+ years as a loyal Verizon customer, and 2+ years as a fanatical Incredible user, I'm leaning strongly towards leaving it all behind. The straw was the recent change to mandatory Shared Data plans. I just can't justify spending $30+ more per month when I upgrade for essentially the same service I am getting now. I understand why Verizon needed to make a change...but it's just too much for me.
I've been eyeing the GNex for a while, and with the continued disappointing turnout of HTC on Verizon (Inc 4G...really? Small screen, no ImageSense), I am planning to get the $350 unlocked, GNex direct from Google and then sign up with a month-to-month plan with a GSM provider.
Sad to see it all go, but also excited with the new possibilities.
If anyone else is mulling this conundrum, I found this thread to be very helpful...

I'm not happy with that either but to my understanding the shared data is an option not a requirement. I believe the tiered plan will still be an option.

Im up for my upgrade so i went on the vzw site logged in, went to upgrade device, picked a phone and went to the plan portion and there is only the one, 40 per phone 50 for 1gb shared data. No option to keep my current plan unless i buy the phone for retail with no contract. I am just going to save up my cash and when the inc dies, buy a phone retail or off amazon or ebay or something. That way i keep my 60 dollar a month bill with the unlimited data plan forever. I dont do a lot of talking or texting so the whole unlimited deal dosent really seem like a deal to me. And 50 for 1gb, thats just outrageous.
I know losing unlimited sucks, but I voluntarily gave it up. The shared plan gives me unlimited talk time, and 4gb a month between my girlfriend and I. We only averaged around 1.5-1.75gb per month each anyways and now that I figured out my employers network password I'm on their wifi at work lol. Saving $40 a month and gaining unlimited talk time was well worth it for me.
That said, I'm still considering leaving Verizon. Their service has been exceptionally poor in my area lately. My friend at work is on sprint and using speedtest his 3g speeds are consistently much greater than mine. But I don't know if I want to keep my Inc until January 2013.

Well I'll be with big red until they actually take away my unlimited, and willing to buy phones retail value if need be. I can't give up my free wifi via phone through internal modem. I plan on doing the same thing when the new iPhone (yes, sorry) comes out in Sept/Oct. I've been a Verizon Wireless customer since I was 16, and would end up paying about $20 more a month on their new plan as well. Verizon has good coverage where I am, so I'll either buy it unsubsidized and keep my unlimited data, or switch to a GSM month to month provider.

blasphemy i tell you, BLASPHEMY
The Shared Data plans work great if you have someone to share it with. Engadget, Android Central, et al have done the analysis and these are good deals for groups of 3 or 4 people who use less than 4GB together...for individuals like me it's a really bad deal. I would basically pay $30-40 more for a capped data plan.
I've thought about getting a retail price phone...you can get an Inc 2 on ebay now for $250-350. But then I wonder, why settle for an old phone, when, for the same price, I can get a brand new, unlocked GNex and be free of all this. Coverage is a concern. Support is a concern. Verizon has been fantastic for me on both. But I live in DC and friends with AT&T and T-Mobile are happy with their coverage.
Still haven't decided...but I appreciate everyone's thoughts and feedback. The Incredible dev community has been just that....another reason I'm looking at the GNex...gotta follow the devs.
Yeah dude I'm considering a nexus for my daily driver. I'm already on tmobile and pay $15-30 a month. They have a $30/month prepaid plan, 100 voice minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited data (first 4 or 5gbs at hpsa+ speeds). Beats any Verizon plan for a single user. Only thing is you have to have T-Mobile coverage in your area. I get better coverage on T-Mobile than Verizon in some places where I live

My wife just left sprint because of crappy service and support, and went to straight talk. $43 a month with tax, unlimited talk text and data, and here service is excelent. It even comes in at the beach where vzw has no service. But straight talks best android phone is still junk. If i could get my inc or another newer better android phone flashed to straight talk, i would leave big red in a heartbeat.

Just ran the numbers for all the lines on our plan and it is better for us to stay with what we have now. If we do upgrade we will go retail or upgrade and opt for the 2GB non-shared data at 29.99 It will keep our price the exact same and the lines that have unlimited can keep it. It also makes it 10 dollars cheaper for us to do 3 lines with 2GB data than shared 6GB data. I totally get the new plans and such, but it suck to only be one phone on the plan.
If we didn't live in the middle of nowhere we might change, but VZW offers the best service for us.

Have you tried calling VZW customer service? I went into my local store last week and asked the gal at the counter what I needed to do for my stbxw will be getting off my account and getting her own account. She said in my case that she made a note in the computer allowing her to take her phone/phone number off my account. But once she did that, then I needed to call customer service for them to change my family share plan to something else, because they no longer sell a unlimited data plan so customer service would have to make my account a single tiered account so I don't get cornered into a share everything plan and lose my unlimited.

That is my understanding from the rep I spoke with on the phone on Thursday. I was told the 2GB plan would still be around for any line I would want to put it on. I think it would for sure be something you would need to call in about b/c I don't see it listed under online options.
i had the incredible, went through a bunch of phones, lost some money, but ended up on a nexus with unlimited data. now that i only have ~9 months left on contract, im thinking of going to tmobiles $70 a month unlimited everything. its more then i get now, for a lot less. if you guys are in the market for used phones, try swappa.com. really good site. ive used them several times. nexuses can be had for $360

Verizon to raise price of grandfathered unlimited data plans

Since many people seem to have a grandfathered unlimited data plan with Verizon, I thought you might want to be aware of this. Might force me to activate my Project Fi account now.

I dropped mine a long time ago and went to Sprint. Sadly, I was only using about 1GB a month even when I did have it. They've been great for me and cut my bill by half (even before they ran that promotion), so I'm happy.
To anyone considering a switch, Sprint is raising their unlimited rate mid-month, so it would be worth moving quick.
That really sucks. Here's a little more on who it affects:
http://www.droid-life.com/2015/10/0...price-hike-more-details-about-who-it-impacts/
Down at the bottom, it sounds like you might not be charged if you have a really old plan that doesn't break out the data separately. I think my old Shared 700 plan has separate data, so I'm probably screwed. I chatted with Verizon, who said nothing was going to change because they haven't officially announced anything yet. Morons.
Been seriously considering Project Fi anyhow, so that's the way I'll go. It'll probably cut my monthly bill in half. I normally don't use much of my unlimited data anyhow.
SIMPLE Mobile cost only $55 for 10GB LTE data.
So how the hell were us 1% the top 5% that needed to be throttled last year?
even at $90 it's still cheaper than any other plan form. plus now i'll be using netflix and google music more often with it instead of my wifi drive since they're charging more.
Love my $55 cricket with 20/ gb
I'm still keeping mine. I'm turning my wifi off permanently tho...

Is the Nexus 6 the best device on Verizon that can be rooted and use custom roms? Currently have a Note 4, and just utterly sick of its lag and lack of ability to do a damn thing I want. I need root back, but seems like every phone these days is unbreakable.
What about the Nexus 6P? Is that coming to vzw under contract discount upgrades?
I don't think it's possible to get on contract with Verizon anymore. There was an article about 3 months ago stating vzw had done away with contracts. It was at the same time they went to this s/m/l/xl data scheme.
I guess I lucked out. I have unlimited data and signed a new 2yr back in may. So like most everybody else, until then WiFi is a thing of the past and I'm just going to do everything on mobile until contract is up.
I think I'll make a nice 5gb file and put on Google drive and just constantly redownload it. See how high I can rack up my mobile data usage until then

You still can. Just have to select 2 year contract instead of device payment plan or purchase outright. May only be for current customers with available upgrades though.
the terms of the contract don't expire after two years, it's just the particular term of not leaving expires after two years. i wish i had kept my original contract so i could look it over. so you still have a contract with them, it's just the penalty for leaving that's expired, not the contract.
If you have a Nexus 6, you should probably check out T-Mobile. I left Verizon a few years back and I consistently have better signal in hospitals than people with Verizon. The Nexus has the best antenna and in my experience more than makes up for any minor differences between the companies. Plus I saved a couple hundred a month so I'm happy.

I'm glad I switched to Tmo when they were offering 2 lines unlimited data for 100$

The 6P will not be available through VZW for contract subsidized upgrades as far as I know. Please also remember that you cannot directly renew your UDP contract through verizon, they will force a new data plan on your line.
I'll just stick with my 100 buck 2 line family unlimited with sprint.
I simply canceled my home internet, raise my rate, that's cool... I'll raise my usage.
A quick note though I work for vzw (shameless plug) is that you will now be able to upgrade and keep your unlimite

from what i read it's not upgrade, but allow us to get on the payment plan to fully purchase a phone. i'd be better off using a credit card since i get a built in extended warranty on purchases. i never buy the TEP b/c it's not worth it for me.
