How do I flash themes onto a stock Note 3? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA, I am new to Android "modding". I've been a long time Apple user and stopped since the iPhone 4S launched. Ever since then I've only had Android phones and loved them however I never had the time to actually "mod" the phones. I used to always Jailbreak my iPhones/Unlock, etc. However, now I want to start theming my Note 3. Specifically I want to apply the Samsung Galaxy S5 theme which are posted in the theme section of the Note 3. The problem is that when I download the .apk and install it, nothing happens. I assume my phone has to be rooted or something? Anyways, if you guys can walk me through this I'd really appreciate it!

If you want to theme, your firmware must be deodexed and rooted and as you stated, you are on stock firmware.

Oh gotcha, is there a sticky thread anywhere that teaches you to root a phone / deodexed it? I can't really seem to find it anywhere. Plus is my current 4.4.2 firmware rootable?

Yes KitKat is rootable on SM-N9005. Please keep in mind, it will trigger your knox 0x1. All useful thread would be at note 3 general thread. I only know an easy way for me to get deodexed firmware because i cant find any deodexed stock note 3 prerooted firmware. Use custom roms as custom roms offer deodexed firmware and rooted. So you have to use any custom rom of your choice located at note 3 android development thread.
First, before you do this, you might want to root your devices go to this thread >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466423
Second, after you rooted your devices dont worry for the warning at your bootloader.
Third, Flash ClockWorkMod i prefer this >>http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2567283
Fourth, Download Custom Roms. Make sure to read their changelog and instruction on how to flash >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development
Fifth, Flash Custom Rom on CWM
Sixth, Configure your rom
Seventh, Install the theme.

There is a separate thread of Knox(so called bootloader) read it. Do you have custom recovery or stock? which method did you used for rooting? pls specify for further guidance.
I am in build mk2. I am using room manager and in that am using clock work recovery. I used this page to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
I think it's a safe root so it says. I am trying to learn little by little any help will be greatly appreciated.

[Q] I'm rooted...now what?

So I've seen these threads before, but not for this build (since this Towelroot solution is so new). Here's what's going on.
Many of you have probably heard that NC1 is now rootable via a program called Towelroot (I'm a new user so XDA won't allow me to post a link, but it's the first result on Google). I am now successfully rooted, running 4.4.2 KitKat, build number KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1.
The problem is, I have no idea where to go from here. I'm told that since the bootloaders are still locked, I can't directly flash any custom roms with common recoveries. However, I have heard of Safestrap. So here are my questions:
What version of Safestrap should I install?
What can I do with Safestrap? In other words, can I run CM, Carbon, GPE and the like?
This may be asking a little much, but how do I go about running any of the above ROMs?
I feel really dumb asking all of these basic questions, but I'll probably end up feeling a lot more stupid if I brick my phone because I didn't ask the right questions. Thanks!
If you need to ask these questions you should not have rooted. Look in the general forum.

I freely admit that I'm new to this, so no reason to point that out. There are other reasons to root besides flashing custom ROMs, and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't have rooted. Every time I look through threads for my build, people just say that it can't be rooted (which is obviously no longer the case, since I'm successfully rooted). I just want to know what kind of capabilities I should look into, and as I understand it, the best way to do that and start tinkering is by using Safestrap.
Safestrap will allow you to flash touch wiz based roms. What firmware are you on?

This is so frustrating. I installed the .apk successfully, but tapping "Install Recovery" doesn't seem to work. I get a "Installation Complete" pop-up, but it still shows as uninstalled and I can't boot into SS. I haven't heard of anyone having this problem before.

As far as i know so far you can only install safestrap compatible roms ..Aosp such as cm and others I havent tried .. Safestrap gives you an option to create multiple rom slots ..Therefore you can run multiple roms without wiping one . If you have any other ?s feel free to PM me . I have only had this phone 2 weeks and it has been a learning process with 2 bricks .. So you can imagine that i have learned the do and dont dos . Mainly it happened when i got vague answers from others.. But youll will find everyone here is willing to help in one way or another.. Just dont post in the wrong thread ..LOL

Yes i understand ..I was about to throw my phone against the wall multiple times.. I can offer what has worked for me .. Downgrade to mk2. 4.3. You will get a semi functioning (No wifi or data) but thats ok .. Then you root it with kingo. And install safestrap 3.71 .. Then boot into recovery and flash Nb1_100%_Stock_Rooted.zip. Dont reboot system at that point reboot into download mode and flash the Modules. That will get you to a Stock rooted NB1 . Then there you can install 3.72 safetstrap.. this seems like a process which it is .. But it sounds like safestrap is giving you a problem with NC1.. I can confirm the method above works as i have done it multiple times.. Try to find a solution for your safestrap problem first. By the way . When you reboot your phone it should give you the option to go to recovery or system.. You dont need to choose reboot recovery.

[Q] Verizon N900V Note 3 - What recovery will work with 4.4.2?

Phone is rooted via Towelroot. I have tried literally every recovery I can find. CWM, Philztouch, TWRP, etc. Most of them fail when I try to flash them with Odin, Safestrap simply doesn't install. What am I missing?
Safe Strap is the Only recovery for this device. It appears that the NC4 Kernel is keeping you from flashing in recovery. Look on the lats two pages of the SS thread (look for post 1240) and it will give you the proper information.

OK, I finally got SafeStrap to work - not sure what I was doing differently this time but it worked. Got into SS bootloader, but now any ROM I try to flash, the phone goes to a black screen and locks out (have to yank battery) after the flash completes and I reboot. It goes to a black screen (off) 10 sec after the Safe Strap enabled screen. The last ROM I tried was the latest Hyperdrive which is supposed to be 900V 4.4.2 compatible?
Thanks again!

You are correct, it is 4.4.2 compatible. But its NC2 compatible. My apologies, I see you rooted with safe strap so this means you are on the official OTA NC4 witch contains the new kernel. This is why you can not flash anything. Go to this thread, and start at post #1244 this wil help get you in the right direction. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610&page=125

I appreciate your help here. I wanted to check whether this will work on the Verizon Note 3 (SM900VVRUCNC4) Is this "NC4?"
I'd like to get to a point where I don't have to keep deferring the next google push-up. I'm a noobie. I flashed custom roms on my S3 but I can't remember how. I might have gotten TWRP working on it....for my Note 3 I just want to be able to try different roms and stay clear of google/verizon and whoever else is trying to control MY phone. I'm not cavalier about the tech. It's just that I'm learning GIS and Linux and earning a living. So I can use all the generosity I can find here.

Need support rooting samsung verizon galaxy s5 sm-g900v 4.4.4

Hello, before now i have rooted htc my touch 4g and moto razr xt912 i have also installed a couple of roms on both those phones so i am familiar with rooting and installing roms.
But I had no idea that rooting and installing roms on galaxy s5 will be this tricky so please bear with me as i tell you guys what i know so far. So i know that geohot's towelroot apk isn't working on my phone because it is of a higher firmware right? So what i need to do is downgrade my phone to a version that makes the towelroot apk work right?
The things I'm having major issues understanding are what is samsung knox exactly? also what is the full form of NE9 and N12? I also realize that i cant install clockword mod recovery so what should i use to back up the current rom on my phone incase i mess up?
Please point out if I'm asking the wrong questions and any and all help is very much appreciated so thanks in advance.
I'm guessing your not using a dev edition s5 so your bootloader is locked and also guessing your on the nk2 build (find in settings/about phone...), correct?
---------- Post added at 01:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:41 PM ----------
Also what is your end goal? Ex. Looking to be rooted on lollipop with the native tether app working. If so you simply need to downgrade your kernel, use towel root v3, install busy box then safestrap, update SU and re flash the kernel you started with. That will bring you right back to where you are now but with root and ability to make a back up. Detailed explanation with software links found here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880
---------- Post added at 01:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:52 PM ----------
Just scroll down to "How to root NK2" and follow the instructions step by step. All the links for the software you need are below that. Just make sure you have a copy of the kernel you have now to flash back to after your done with the downgrade, root, and safestrap install. Also don't worry to much about screwing up Odin is going to be your new best friend and there is a copy of the original software on that page to restore your phone from a softbrick

Detailed explanation with software links found here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784880

Well my build appears to be n12 and yes the bootloader is locked on my verizon galaxy s5.
I'm looking to root my phone and remove all verizon apps and try the roms that are available. So how can i downgrade my kernel and back up my current rom? do i have to use odin? is there a specific version of odin software for galaxy s5?
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Start with following that link I gave you and get rooted install busy box and safestrap then up date your SU and flash back to your existing kernel make a backup and you can go from there with no fear ...

The correct order would be get root with towelroot, install supersu from playstore, update it's binaries. Reboot, then install busybody and lastly safestrap.
Yes and no I prefer to use safestrap to install the SU update rather than playstore which you will find in the instructions I provided with the link ... just follow them explicitly and you will find a quick and easy solution to your request ... not to mention the fight with fc you have to endeavor to do it his way ... but I digress. Don't take it from just me, follow the links instructions and ask any questions you need to along the way

Newbee with a question
Hi, I'm Maypo1, Ihope I'm not out of line in this forum, but I read it and have 1 question. I have an S5 SM-900V Kit Kat 4.4.4 with firmware ending in ANK7,because I had a fat thumb and mistakenly downloaded the first of 2 downloads to Lollypop. ? does this screw up my chances of downgrading and rooting to N12 or NGC I have already downloaded odin 3.10, and both roms from SamMobile on my laptopand am ready to try this all out.
Thank's in advance Maypo1

Did you back anything up in your custom recovery? Even if you didnt check backups in recovery or factory reset. Did you wipe cache, dalvik, and everything for the rom, did you dirty flash?

Yes, I just updated to stock LP 5.0 via odin and then rooted and flashed custom recovery. I used the CF-auto-root (for G900R4) method on odin and flashed Philz 6.26.2 for custom recovery. Make sure under settings/security you have the "Reactivation Lock" box-unchecked.

It is safe and will root your phone with out issue. Of course you could always just go with the standard "flash recovery in Odin and flash Supersu in recovery". Simple.

Thanks I will try cf auto root , I hope it'll work with android lollipop
How would I go back to the stock lollipop ROM... I'm really confused my baseband version is BOG2 and I'm currently on ressurecion ROM remix... The problem is I don't have a CSC or PDA version number... Do I just flash the BOG2 version please help

Download the latest firmware for our devise. It is a tar.md5 file. Open Odin. Connect your phone. Place the .tar.md5 file in the PDA section. Click start. Done.
Assuming you have Odin and drivers installed correctly.

I'll give it a try thanks which version of Odin should I use
Edit 2: Never mind I put a lot of thought into this I might just stay on my custom ROM.... This is the only phone I have for 14 months then I will maybe get a new one, I really don't want to screw this up, I'll be stuck with a flip phone for 14 months

I download the latest one right BOG2 ???
I'm very concerned about doing this because I read in another thread, same issue that happended to my phone it ended up getting stuck on the us cellular 4g LTE screen and wouldn't do anything... After the guy flashed the stock ROM the phone was still stuck on the same screen after clearing the cache and factory resetting. I don't want this happening to my phone

Unless you flash firmware that is not compatible with our devised and you're using the latest firmware for our devise, along with the correct version of Odin, you will have no issues.

Honestly don't know if I want to go back to stock now found a really stable custom ROM
I was recently given this phone, on it Anroid 5.0
im finding its both a good an bad thing lol.
Are the us cellular links for 5.0 android correct?
Samsung doesn't have an unlocker but seemed to have the rest
Im a newb but from what i noticed upon writing all my phone info down, and correct me if im wrong but it looks to be that if you know your boot loader snd region of world the phone is from you can figure out that Your PdA is exactly the same az your bootloader and
The CSC is identical to pda EXCEPT for the 3 letters after G900R4 _ _ _
Those are your Country of origin or region
I lost my root. Tried using Mobile Odin and checked the everroot. But apparently it did not work. My problem is I want to go back to 4.4.2 stock firmware and I do not have a pc or mac at the moment. Can I use the stock 5.0 recovery to flash back to 4.4.2?
Mine may not be 100% on the authentic side. I just learned that the person who gave it to me got it from a rep at a t-mobile store because an anon customer had left it at the store stating that it had been reported stolen.. and it needs to be unlocked from Us Cellular

Great Post
Hello,
Id like to give a big thank you to all the developers/contributors that put together the rooting instructions in the developer section
A few days ago i successfully rooted my smg900r4!
it was very simple, and quick process using the instructions in the developer thread.
Using cf auto, super su, and odin. And Kies as backup
I will notate i had a little hiccup in the process.
It was a file type conflict regarding the samsung usb driver download zip being set to open in windows 8 and the desktop i used that was running windows 10.
Once i realized what the issue was a coulple setting adjustmemts later and i was done!
And as stated its rock solid stable
I am on stock rom etc.
I have installed the following apps and granted root access to them
- Apps2Sd (this is a very excellent multi function application !
- Busybox on rails
- App Manager iii (i had this installed prior to rooting the device.)
- Wifi Connection Manager
Couple questions;
Since ive installed the multi function Apps2SD application, is it redundant to keep app manager iii installed?
Are the hidden menus and settings only accessible by using the shortcut app found in playstore?
