As we all know attempting to roll back NAE trips knox...but it's been stated that rolling back without rolling b ask the bootloader will not trip knox...but this is unconfirmed. ..has anyone tried it? Anyone willing to?
And let's say I want to try it myself...I've never used Odin before now so how would you set it up to flash just the ROM?
If you have the true Knox Bootloader - took the OTA or flashed via Odin...
As of now you CANNOT go back to a non-knoxed bootloader.
If you wish to try what has been done, probably hundreds if not thousands of times and try - go ahead. You'll find that out.
Your question is brought up a few times a week, sometimes a day here.
"Rolling back without rolling"? As leader stated you cannot roll back via Odin to a previous OTA build. And that is not what trips Knox. Rooting doesn't even trip Knox. Its installing a custom recovery that trips Knox.

Ment to say "rolling back without rolling back the bootloader"...apparently auto correct decided I ment to say something else.
So basically. ..The attempt would just fail..and that's it..Ok all I needed to know...and thanks for the clarification on the custom recovery thing. I've read conflicting info.

So I took the OTA to 4.4.2, are you saying that there is a way I can root my phone without triggering know? Is a custom recovery necessary?

there was with 4.3 using Kingo app or Saferoot. But it seems neither have been updated to work with 4.4.2. CF auto root is the only way i know right now to root and that roots the phone my installing a temporary custom recovery which trips knox. so as of now there is no way to root 4.4.2 without tripping knox.

Which rooting method? CF-Auto Root works with all firmwares and bootloaders (but be wary of tripping the Knox flag).

Yes that will work. Although the fastest and best method (without having to install a custom recovery) is to use CF-Auto Root (and the safest too because I wouldn't trust the zip on the blog, but I trust Chainfire lol).

Which is your current firmware? If you use ANY method to do any kind of rooting or flashing, your knox will be triggered and changed to 0x1 (if you are on the firmwares that have knox).

I think that zip is safe. Because i use that method since S3 generation. I use that method also on my S4 and it works fine. But i'm still on XXUBMG5 (Old Bootloader) and i want to update on the latest that's why i ask if that method will work. Thank you for answering sir

If you are on MG5, then you have no problems with rooting since you have no knox. But I suggest updating to the last firmware without knox which I think is XXUBMF8. All the firmwares with XXUB... are without knox. Some custom ROMs out there have no bootloaders when you flash them, so they are safe too. Just search for the answer and you'll know.

ive found one root option that seems to work but you cant install a custom recovery.
my phone came with the mk2 update from sprint so is there any way to root it and have a custom recovery? im not worried about tripping knox if that matters. also does the cf-auto root method work with the full mk2 update?

You've probably already found a solution, but this is how I rooted the Sprint MK2 4.3

This worked fine, and I was able to install custom recovery. Just been having and issue getting a proper backup, but everything else worked just fine.
Hope this helps

The method is for Verizon GS4, can you reconfirm that its working for Spring L720 too?
Thanks
I can confirm that it worked for my Sprint MK2 4.3. I should mention that when I started the instal bat and the command prompt screen popped up telling me to hit any key to continue, nothing happened. I "x'd" out of command prompt and started the install bat again and it worked no problem. I have done this a total of 3 times now. All on Sprint MK2 4.3 and all successful. I checked each time with root checker to ensure root access.
I can also confirm that Safe Root tool was able to root my Sprint L720 MK2-based 4.3 Galaxy S4. I had Odin'ed back to stock MK2 days ago. I haven't tried the SafeTrap Recovery yet so I can back-up/install custom ROMs.
can anyone confirm that SafeRoot does not trip KNOX?

Thanks for the confirmation as it assured me enough to go ahead and root... and as confirmation on my end that it worked!!
One question though... as I'm now rooted, it's been mentioned that when you boot the device up you should see a "Custom" banner during boot because things have been changed. On my device I never see this and was wondering if that's the case on yours as well.
I can also confirm that QBKING&&s root method works for mk2 build..so does goomanager for installing twrp and disabling knox. Jut dont try the MJA native hotspot mod...i followed the video to the t and am now stuck in a boot loop

Why would you use the MJA native hotspot mod for a MK2 build? I believe in that same thread they released an MK2 hotspot mod as well, which I have installed successfully as I now have FoxFi WiFi hotspot availability!

There is numerous threads around XDA regarding this, have a look around and see. Read up on everything before you start messing around with firmwares.

If you have rooted you now need a Custom recovery, you can choose either CWM by Chenglu / TWRP by TeamWin or PhilZ Advanced CWM.
Download which ever one you choose to use, flash via Odin in PDA then download your Custom ROM, reboot into recovery and wipe data/cache then flash your Custom ROM via the recovery
I am still on 4.2.2, stock rooted. I don't believe I have a custom bootloader. I have the nag message to upgrade to OTA 4.3.
What are my options at this point?
I'd like to keep root or reroot, if possible. I'd also like to make sure I can recover all my app settings easily.
Thanks!
Eph
If you want NAE 4.4.2 stock unrooted then you can just grab NAE tar and Odin it. If you don't care about Knox then you can root it and restore apps with data from titanium backup.

What if I *do* care about Knox?
Are there any options?
Ideally, I'd like to be rooted on the latest release without the Knox problem.
If you do care about tripping Knox for warranty reasons. Then there is no way to root Knox without tripping it on 4.4.2. Although you could keep your MF9 BOOTLOADER and flash the stock rooted NAE ROM by unknown force. Plus Odin NAE modem.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
My warranty is with Square Trade. So, I guess the Knox issue would only come up if I have a software issue that requires me taking it to Sprint, right?
Can you elaborate on "Although you could keep your MF9 BOOTLOADER and flash the stock rooted NAE ROM by unknown force. Plus Odin NAE modem. ", please?
Thanks again.
Knox from what I know would only come up if you needed to ship your phone to Samsung for warranty reasons during the first year of purchase.
Use this method and you won't have Knox bootlaoder at all but will be on the latest KitKat update.

You can un-root in the settings of the SuperSu app,it will remove SuperSu and all its files from your system.
However it will not reset your tripped Knox.
If you rooted through TWRP,un-rooting will not remove TWRP , this can only be done by flashing a stock ROM through Odin.

So if your rooted with cfroot and get an update from samsung, just use supersu to unroot, install the update, and root again? The update should install with even with knox tripped right?
Isn't there a way of flashing just the recovery rather than a whole rom? It seems that's what the updates are looking for when they try to install themselves.

Nonsense. KNOX won't affect OTAs at all; if you have a stock unrooted rom installed you'll get OTAs.
You can flash a newer ROM over an older rom in ODIN and retain your settings and data. There's a chance your ROM won't work properly though and you might get some System UI crashes in which case you will need to nuke your data.
how can i find a stock rom for my phonemy baseband version is G930FXXU1APB6 and its a g930fd the only ones ive found are saudi arabia and pakistan. can anyone give me a hand
If you're just worried about getting ota updates, just use flashfire. It will apply the update without losing root, apps or settings.
