Hi all,
I flashed my phone, and thought I’d go with Darky's Raw Steel Edition (4.1), which is awesome btw. I installed it correctly, installing I9000XWJM8 first (the MODEM and PDA, not CSC as none seemed to come in the package).
Everything was working smoothly until I realise 3G/Data Network is no longer working (it did previously). Not only that but it seems it won’t connect to my service provider (Three) at all (emergency calls only), and I’ve also now noticed GPS doesn’t seem to work at all, I can’t even get into GPS test mode. Wireless does however work though it being off, or on, has no impact.
I’ve tried:
Flashing different firmware - Stock JM8 and Doc Froyo’s latest JPO.
Hard Reset
Deleting and re-entering APN settings, though they were correct and already on the phone anyway.
Testing my SIM on another phone – signal is strong, inc. 3G on that.
I’m really at a loss here. Any ideas anyone?
Thanks
UPDATE: So, I won't bump this myself, but incase anyone finds this thread in the future: the gprs, gps, 3g, etc all work - just not in my house, on the SGS, anymore. I have no idea why - my other phone, it's fine.. and it used to be fine with this phone too. I'll update again if I figure it out.
the other phone works fine with the same sim you are using in the SGS?
Yep, the same SIM works in my old Nokia 6600 fold, people in my house also with Three are getting solid reception right now. 4-5 bars with 3g established.
It worked beautifully all the way home from work on the bus, just not in/around my house.
It's as if the local cell towers near my house have blocked my SGS specifically (can't receive calls or texts either). I did turn the wireless on and off in short succession (which would cause the gprs/3g to try to re-establish each time).. maybe I flooded them and they blocked my IMEI? Or is that just a ridiculous idea?
The real odd thing is GPS not working either (again, just around my house/street); surely it doesn't need a cell site for that?
It does seem as if I can't download apps from The Market anymore either, and have tried various cache clearing solutions to fix it (problem occurred roughly when I noticed my reception was nill).
You might have a problem with the band selection thing of your phone.. have you tried downloading/speed test when you /do/ get a connection? If it seems capped at 40kbps, you might have the same problem I experienced before, of being stuck on 2g. (Despite settings saying otherwise).
I fixed it by doing the solution to having a missing 850 band, the thread of which is found somewhere in this forum.
Thanks. That sort of worked earlier.
It made a slow data connection, and some texts came through.
I then went out to a location a few miles away, had a look and it was still on a slow connection type for a few mins, then all of a sudden it went to HSPDA (with the occasional 3G flicker) and was blistering fast.
Now that I'm back home, I've lost all reception again and can't make/take calls
[EDIT] Clicking around my phone in the hopes of finding something: checked product code in my nv_data.bin file with SGS Toolbox, and it's showing I9000HKDKOR; whilst the backup is showing I9000HKDH3G - could I be on to something? I backed up my efs folder after rooting before doing anything else - so, going to try restoring that.
I have a hunch based on a 2 year old post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=445913).
From what I understand, Three UK piggy back on Orange's network when Three's 3G cell towers are out of reach. Orange don't provide Three users with the full service though, just 2G and I'm guessing they prioritise Orange customer traffic.
I think when I flashed my phone, I removed code commanding the phone to prefer Three cell towers. Without that code, the phone simply goes to the strongest/first signal it detects. I'm guessing in the area near where I live, it's Orange (or maybe any old network which is why I'm often getting Emergency Calls only).
This is all guesswork. I'm hopeful, seeing as if I quickly switch the SIM to my two+ year old phone, then I quickly get 5 bars and 3G.. unless the SGS's signal issues really are *that* bad.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831022
Try see if you have the symptom of a missing band?
Hi Nwsk, I tried that before and assumed it didn't work, but actually the change isn't sticking. Which seems to be the case for a couple of others! Thanks for pointing me back to it!
[Edit]
Ohhhh dear. Now I have another theory (I really hope I'm wrong).
I've just read on a thread that some phones don't have the 850 Band, it's down to a lack of hardware support. I'd wager every Three UK branded phone sold will have the correct hardware as stock. I sent my phone back to Samsung for repair, they said they replaced the motherboard.. inference: they replaced it with one without the WCDMA 850 support.
Hmm, I'm definitely no authority on this, since I'm just guessing.. but I figure if that if was a true hardware defect, you wouldn't even be able to get it temporarily?
Are you using any 'battery-saving' type apps? Something might be messing up and keep reverting the settings. I had this occur to me a second time when I was trying out the superpower app here, I think it conflicted with another app I was using, and it borked out my network connectivity. Somehow fixed that after a few reboots, and lots of messing around in the phone debug menu with the 3g/2g thing, it suddenly worked again.
I've not seen it manage to get onto 850MHz WCDMA in my house for a while, not since the mobo got replaced (I should qualify that with a statement on my bad memory ). It will occasionally latch onto something if I walk around the house, giving me a slow data connection with the G symbol showing - it will drop pretty quickly.
Messing around while I write this, I've just realised if I set my phone to GSM(2G) with roaming [Three UK phones need this on so they can connect to Orange towers], then it does establish a data connection at 1800mhz. If I force WCDMA only, I get NOTHING. Setting both/auto leads to it being dodgy/instable, as I've discribed above.
My Nokia 6600 supports 850mhz UMTS, which would explain why it's working well inside my house.
I don't think it's an app. I've flashed a few different firmwares in an effort to get this fixed, it's currently on official Froyo JPO (not even rooted!) with Multi-CSC and a few completely harmless apps. I'd try the stock Three firmware if it was available somewhere.
I'm hoping it's software like you suggest! I will tinker away for now!
Thanks for all the help, at least now I'm fairly sure I'm on the right track!
Right, a little back story.
I brought my SGS2 at the start of May in the UK on O2 so I have an early model which came with the firmware before KE1. I rooted in the first week and was flashing Villainrom 1.0 before too long with no data problems.
I think it was around KE2 with Lite'ning rom that I first saw my phone constantly switching between H & 3G and stalling when receiving or sending data. This behaviour has continued through all the firmwares I've tried with many different modems. I moved onto to Cognition when it was v1.01 and have been using it all the way unto 1.2 with the KG3 modem. Again still with data connecting problems.
Things I have tried -
Turning off fast dormacy
Editing the build.prop http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097612&highlight=build.prop pages 1-5
Switching off HSDPA/HSUPA via the *#301279# command
Disabling juice defender
Switching to WCDMA only
Changing modems
Full hard reset and reflasing of roms
Even with the above on multiple roms and rom versions my data connection was unreliable at best and killing spree warranting at its worst.
Possible fix-
What i found lurking on XDA on a slow day at work was the command below
*#2263#
This allows you to select which bands your phone uses. I selected option 2 then tested the 4 available bands. They all resulted in a complete loss of reception except WCDMA 2100. this is probably network specific you'll need to try it yourselves.
The results and current settings
Now when I try to use my data connection the phone no longer switches between H & 3G. It will start on 3G then find H and stay there, I see a slight delay if its been in deep sleep or JD has cut the connect but this is normal for the phone to start on 3G to save power.
Fast dormacy - off
build.prop -stock/unedited (I found this worked for me for a while but since 2.3.4 it didnt seem to help)
HSDPA/HSUPA via the *#301279# command - both on
Juice defender - on
WCDMA only selected as when picking a band it doesn't seem to like having a GSM band selected as well (happy to be corrected on that)
Modem KG3 -
Rom cog 1.2 - I'm patiently waiting 1.4 based on KG6 to test my findings.
Conclusion-
Okay it could be that selecting a band does F'all and that I'm seeing better results for a completely different reason. I'm not a developer so my fixing skills amount to playing with stuff I don't fully understand and seeing how more or less broke I've made it.
After thought -
Ive seen on the sensation forum they have discussed the wrong IMEI code being the cause of poor data speeds so I may look into that next.
Please share your experiences and anything else you've tried.

That should be no connection as IMEI belongs to phone and handshakes with network first .
KG6 modem some report as better .

I will have to give this a try and see how it works, thanks for the share.
I am in the same boat, it is VERY frustrating to say the least. A typical scenario for me is: reading a web page on my S2 for a good few minutes (3g has gone to sleep mode by the time I have finished reading), I click on a link, 3g flashes, H comes up and flashes once.....wait.....wait.......wait......10 seconds later it decides to initiate a connection and take me where I want to go! It does the same thing with the XDA app. I have been onto O2 about this a couple of weeks ago, all they did was give me the settings over the phone (which were the exact same ones I already had) and they also sent me a replacement sim card, suffice to say, there is no change. Now I am convinced its a network problem of some sort, I have a three sim card which I have been trying out and the above problems do not exist anymore when using three, I click a link after 3g has gone to sleep and it goes from 3g to H and initialises the data transfer in one smooth motion. It looks like I'll be getting my PAC code and moving to Three!
would be interested to hear if switching to the 2100 band helps at all seeing as your on O2 as well
Mine is O2 via Giffgaff and no problems at all .
Tested KG6 modem Wi|Fi only and it is a stronger signal .
jje
Yeah, forgot to mention that, I have just enabled it. I can't test at the moment though coz there is no 3G coverage where I am. The only problem with enabling it is you will not be able to connect to GPRS or Edge if you need to. But it is worth testing regardless.
Just been out and about and tried that setting, didn't make much difference unfortunately
Maybe it was a combination of tweaks on my end. What rom & modem are you using?

Villain 2.3 with KG3 modem. The problem has been the same whatever ROM I have used, I even flashed back to O2 stock a couple of weeks ago to see if it was a ROM problem, but that was the same. I can't remember what it was like when I first got the handset though, mine was the first batch as well.

The wife is on Giffgaff so I think I'll give that sim a try before I get my PAC off O2.

hi
i am just testing now this fix. i have an o2 phone and i did the same changes you did, disable fast dormancy, changed build.prop settings, will let you know after going a few times underground ;-)
gabrio
confirm, this is working, even when i go underground or when the signal goes away, it gets back to H/H+ and works, gabrio
Give it a little while, I think you'll be back saying it didn't work
Personally, I went ahead with my threat and moved over to 3uk, never looked back since with this problem, been perfect!
I've tried it all. Disabled fast dormancy, hspa, toyed with band selection, edited build.prop (btw, don't bother with it, the network settings you find on the web to type in don't work on the s2) you name it - but it would still cut out. Luckily, my phone is unlocked so I switched my provider and now it works like a charm with all the bells and whistles enabled. I can ride the tram all across warsaw and maybe have a handful of 2-3 second hiccups when I'm listening to online radio. Curiously enough, on my previous provider I've noted that there are some areas (like a busy mall - Arkadia) where it would not stall as well as a few other places, and most other areas that were notorious with data hanging. I'm convinced now that it is an issue on the telco side (*cough*Orange*cough*), and too bad because I was on a prepaid plan with them that for roughly $30 I had 7GB of transfer. I guess they figured they can promise the world on their trash network, because nobody would actually use it up. YMMV.
Had this issue with a UK GS2 purchased from Negri using it on AT&T.
Since upgrading to the latest UK firmware with 2.3.4 I have not had the issue going on about 2 weeks now!
Man was that issue annoying. Had to restart the phone sometimes to get data back.
Joe
Ok I did that too though how abt lag? Phone lags a bit opening large sms conversations and browsing home screens.. But peace. Yours too?

Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I went through the forum and couldn't find any solution, so I decided to post it here and hoping for somebody to help:
There're 3 problems/issues:
1. The phone does not always show "H"(HSPA+) for data. It usually shows "3G", and when you try to access internet, after some 10 secs, it turns to "H". This is for when you are standing still in a location with good signal coverage.
2. When I'm in a moving car, the data speed gets really slow. Takes forever to load up xda for instance. Most of the time "3G" is shown. Sometimes "H"(HSPA+) appears for a random but generally short time period.
3. When moving out and in to Wind signal coverage, it takes very long for the phone to connect to Wind's service.
----------------------
Now don't tell me this is all because of Wind has bad signal, because if I put my sim card back to my old HTC amaze, none of the 3 issues above appears.
I know it's a known issue that Wind and Nexus 4 together has a problem, but I'm really looking for a solution to this as N4 is a really nice phone with Wind's unlimited data on it.
Someone help plz!!!!!!!:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
-------------
BTW. I called Wind customer support today and they give me no helpful solutions. They also admit that although they are officially offering the Nexus 4, they have no custom tweak on the radio/modem of the phone.
------------
update: since the phone stays on 3G when there's no internet loading, it's probably saving battery this way. But with Wind's poor network, it's better to always be on "H".....is there a way to do that?
same problem
When we first got on WIND eaarlier this year we needed to get a new sim card to fix reception issues so you may wantt to see if that's part of your issue? Wife's Google Nexus 4 iwas purchased right form tehgoogle store and is not modded in any way.
I don't know if it's the area I'm in (Burlington near upper middle and bronte creek) but reception on the Wind network is spotty at best. And it almost seems as if form Jan. 2013 to now it's gotten worse at my house.
We have the same problem on my son's LG Optimus 4X HD as my wifes Google Nexus 4 so maybe it's just winds coverage in certain areas?
If there's any mod. I can do to improve the crappy signal from WIND I would love it because right now we are shopping for a different carrier due to the reception problems.
I had a friend using Solavei with similar issues. Tried a new SIM card, same issue.
Eventually got a replacement from Play Store, solved issue - was a defect in first phone. The Play Store has great support.
Details like which ROM/build would be helpful. Which modems you've tried, etc.
Hello everyone!
I am having a very hard time diagnosing an issue with my Nexus 6P. Android 7.1.1 Angler-03.78 Build: N4F26T on AT&T unlocked. My network keeps dropping consistently. It works fine for about 5-7 minutes after a reboot or after toggling Airplane Mode. It goes on to attach itself to LTE and then subsequently drops to HSDPA/3G and then just outright loses network. It intermittently then comes back but usually hangs on to HSDPA/3G and the voice quality and data speed are just terrible.
I tried the SIM in my old Galaxy nexus (which doesn't support LTE unfortunately) and the network didn't drop. So I am convinced something is going on with the phone. This issue crept up this last Monday (03/26) and has been going on ever since. Has anyone had similar issues? If not, could anyone tell me how to diagnose this issue before I have to send it to Huawei? Because I am not very keen on sending away the only proper handset I have.
Thanks
I had a similar problem on Cricket, which uses AT&T's network. I never had good cell coverage in my apartment but it suddenly got so bad that I could only make and receive calls in certain rooms. Cricket wasn't able to diagnose the issue and I ended up switching my service to Project Fi. The problem completely went away. I now have a strong cell signal with full bars everywhere in my apartment. I'm not sure that sending your phone back to Huawei will actually solve anything but good luck.

Oh, I can't switch from my carrier. And this particular issue just started occurring this week. I have been reading a few threads with different radio versions. I wonder if that will help.

This is a known issue just this month I experienced it myself, Try flashing different radios I was on 03.78 and had signal drop issues 03.72 and 03.75 have had the best results.
I flashed radio 3.7.5 and it did zip for me. I was on Sprint where I never had any problems and switched to AT&T when I got the 6P and never got more than half the bars strength when the service was actually working. After I switched to Project Fi I am usually on the T-Mobile network and get full bar strength 100% of the time at home. If I use Signal Spy to manually switch to Sprint I still get full bar strength in every room in my apartment. This is with the exact same radio that I had problems with on AT&T. I don't know if the 6P doesn't play nice with certain networks or if those networks provide inferior coverage but Verizon users have had notorious problems with this phone that caused Google to issue a separate radio just for them. Verizon customers are the ones who claimed to benefit from flashing radio 3.7.5. I have never heard of that actually helping anyone else and it definitely didn't help me. If the problem is partly with your network then sending the phone back to Huawei won't make any difference. You can try flashing a different radio but in the end you might have to switch carriers and if you can't do that you might need to switch to a phone that your carrier actually recommends.

It's strange because this happened just this week. It was fine before this week. Everything worked, I got proper signal strength and the connection never dropped. Now on my commutes I can see there is no network when I am driving, no maps, no spotify nothing.

Okay, I guess that's what I am doing today. I haven't modded my phone in any way, I am still on stock android. I am going to have to start by unlocking bootloader and flashing TWRP.
Good luck. I was in the same boat. It just stopped working but there was no Rom update that could have caused a problem.

Where do I find the old versions? This thread doesn't have the old versions anymore. 03.79 doesn't resolve the issue.
EDIT: I used 03.75 and that doesn't do it either. Time to try 03.72. I am so disheartened.

Why not go to AT&T first, let them know about your issue and have them provision a new SIM for your phone (free). I seriously doubt a different radio is going to solve your problem, but if you want to try there is a dedicated thread in General for flashable bootloader/radio zips, but you would be better served installing ADB/Fastboot on your PC and using fastboot to flash them yourself. The latest radio is 03.81 (from 7.1.2) The stock image files on Google contain the radio and bootloader img files. If the new SIM doesn't fix it, you may end up backing up your data and doing a factory reset.

Okay the latest factory ROM didn't work, I did a complete wipe and a factory reset. I will go to AT&T tomorrow and see if a new sim helps (I doubt it because this SIM works fine in my backup phone Galaxy Nexus but I can't verify LTE with that).
I don't know what my options will be after this. I feel like I am spending more time maintaining my phone instead of using it. Just disappointed, that's all.

Yeah, I found it. Thank you. None of the versions helped though
I've been experiencing signal problems when downgrading which is not your case. But I got it solved by performing a factory reset. It's fairly straightforward once you have backed up your data. Worth a try?
Similar problem here I think I have found part of the problem
I have been having a similar problem ever since a recent update. I have tried everything found in this post. Recently I tried turning off my wifi and noticed the problem seems to go away. I have done a few searches to see if anyone has reported no phone with wifi on, none of the results so far have been very helpful.
Since I don't want to be without wifi, I have gone into the developer options and turned on cellular data always active, to see if this helps, so far this is working for me.

I did try that but it didn't work unfortunately. I called up Google and they sent me a refurb which was DOA but then later they sent me a new one which works just fine. So it was definitely a hardware issue on my old phone. I don't plan on updating my software because I just want this phone to work like a phone.

It happened either way. Wifi status didn't affect my issue. It used to die out completely. Google just sent me a new replacement (after a DOA refurb) and it seems to be holding. But I am not upgrading to 7.1.1 because I feel the issue might crop up again. So I am going to stick to 6.0 for now.
Update on my status
So far having wifi off has worked, until I ran Waze and then both GPS and Networking down till I quit and turned Airplane mode on and off. The previous change to Developer setting did not work.
I have been debating going back down to 6.*, has anyone had good results with this?
Hey guys,
Well, I ordered the essential phone from amazon.com and had it shipped to Europe (Belgium). It's working great for the most part but I have a question for anybody else who imported it from the USA about the preferred network.
If I check on the the frequency check site it shows that all protocols are compatible with my provider, including UMTS (which I presume is WCDMA).
If I set my preferred network to anything with WCDMA then it's impossible to make voice calls. Normally the GSM/WCDMA/LTE option int he preferred mobile networks should be perfect for me, no? The workaround I use is to select LTE/GSM/TDSCDMA in which case my phone connects with LTE and and allows me to make voice calls.. the weird thing is that it looks like my data connection drops to GSM (2G) while making a call.
Is this all normal? Anybody else encountered any issues and found workarounds/fixes?
thanks!
[edit, one of my friends has the same phone and issue, so it's not device specific. i also e-mailed essential and their first response wasn't helpfull and completely besides the point]

Hey mate while I don't know if this will fix it but may help... Try dialing *#*#4636#*#* on your phones dialer and then click on phone and then click three dots in the top right corner and then select radio bands and then select Europe.... It should help but then again not sure

thanks but that didn't work. back to the LTE/GSM/TDSCDMA prefered network...
I just received the phone last Saturday here in Belgium and I noticed a lot of battery drainage due to a loss in cellular signal. Fiddled around a bit and set my radio band to Europe and preferred network type to LTE/WCDMA. Still managing to maintain LTE+ and make phone calls at the same time. My provider is Proximus. Let's see how it goes the upcoming days and how it affects battery usage.

really weird, i'm on the same provider and tried exactly what you mentioned above but wasn't able to make phone calls.... on the upside my battery life has been stellar with the preferred network type i'm using. really impressive not to mention when it's asleep which is amazing, it stays at 100% overnight.
which hardware revision are you on? mine is 1.8 running android 7.1.1

Same hardware revision and same android version with security patch from November. I lost 15% battery overnight in airplane mode I guess something is going wrong at the quality control level at Essential Even though it has a lot of problems, I'm still loving this phone! It evokes an emotional response

15% in airplane mode?? hmm that's very odd, specially since mine stays at 100% overnight.. then again i don't have any of those social media apps or anything special and I did set it to turn off wifi while sleeping and not charging. you might have a rogue app on your hands.
well i guess all that's left for us to do is cobble together a franken-phone from both our essentials and we'll have the perfect phone.!!
after i got used to the weight I started really enjoying the phone as well.

No social media apps here either, only Whatsapp as an extra messenger service. I have all background autosyncs for all accounts disabled as well and yet lost another 9% over night...
Aah well, Oreo might bring some improvements and beta is already released for Essential Phone!
Hey guys,
I know the thread is old, but before I start a new one, maybe we could warm this one up?
I have a pretty similar (or the same) Problem with connecting to the different network types.
I just got my PH-1 from ebay two weeks ago. Sprint variant, but worked without a Problem here in Germanys GSM-based network - so I thought! After some days I noticed that in some areas I only had poor to no reception, where I knew it should be better (I never changed my carrier). Some twiddling and I found out, that the PH-1 only uses the 4G and 2G networks - not 3G! The 'Preferred network' was set to 'global' and I even went to *#*#4636#*#* --> three dots menu --> Europe. Just to be sure. So perhaps the antenna doesn't work properly I thought, but when I switch to 'WCDMA only' I get full reception 3G (H+). So the device is able to use alle three types of networks. After that I tried all different combinations, but in the end it comes to either 3G or 4G and 2G.
I tried another SIM-Card from the same Provider (o2/Telefónica) but its the same with the PH-1 and the SIMs work without any problems in my old device.
After that I followed the big discussion thread about unlocking the device on this forum and in the end successfully unlocked AND SIM-unlocked the device by flashing the modemst1 and modemst2. That changed nothing
My next step was flashing LineageOS 15.1 - also nothing changed...
Thus this is surely related to the PH-1 directly. Any ideas what the reason for this could be? Are there any other preferences I could try to change?
Any tips for europe and android pie with this phone? Should i set it to 4g/lte as preferred?

This is same as 3G/4G LTE so should be fine - i use LTE only because have VoLTE but if not then good have 4G/LTE enabled.
