Has anyone been experiencing issues with the APN auto switching between 3g/LTE? For the past month or so every cm based or aosp rom I try has issues automatically going in and out of 3g and LTE areas unless I manually go into APN settings and switch it. Very annoying while traveling and last week there was the whole "roaming indicator off" message for service instead of "SPRINT". Any solutions or ROMs anyone know of that don't have this issue?
Edit: I'm using CM11 jflte on Philz recovery with the NAE modem. Maybe more success with MK2?
I'm having the same issue since the cm-11-20140323-NIGHTLY, and I have to do the exact same thing. I have the MK2 modem so I wouldn't worry about switching modems.
haha, yeah. I tried it and same issues. Sad to say, but it looks like I'll be going back to a Touchwiz ROM for now at least.
AOSPs have always been like this for me since epic touch and the GS3.

I think I may have fixed my problem with a combination of two things. I am using CM11 and I'm not responsible if this breaks your phone. First, I did the enable MTU probing shown in this thread (all thanks and credit to Steppnasty):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2556590
But before rebooting after the fix, I went to Access Point Names in Settings, selected the Sprint LTE internet, and deleted the APN that just said Sprint (was the top one in my list). After a reboot, my LTE/3G switching has been working fine. Not sure if this will help anyone here, but it seems to have worked for me.
Is this still an ongoing issue with all 4.4.2 ROM's? have since switched back to CM 10.2.1 until this issue gets resolved. Can't see how anyone could use a ROM that can't automatically switch between network types.

When did this start? After you flashed Fresh? You might want to try reflashing the radio.
You have data roaming enabled correct?
Settings, wireless, mobile network and make sure the box is checked. I'm on Froyo so the menu options might be a little different.
Anytime you're using a custom rom, and you are having a problem like this you should post the issue in the rom thread. The developer of the rom needs to know feedback like this, plus the rest of us are most likely not experiencing this issue.
yeah i think there is a bunch of roaming options and each ROM is probably defaulted different.
There is also something called data roam guard and call guard. I assume those guard your from using those services while roaming. Maybe turn them off?
same issue
I had the same issue on fresh with latest radios and hardware revision 4 I switch to myns Rom last night ill post back next time I roam and see if its fresh causing the issue
Fresh hasn't been updated to 004's AFAIK. Stick with stock or accept that stuff won't work until HTC gets off their ass and releases the kernel source like they're legally obliged to.
Greetings XDA members. I purchased my Galaxy S3 from AT&T back in July. Had no issues with data (HPSA+/4GLTE). Recently I rooted phone (no custom firmwares) for tethering purposes. Never tweaked with APN settings. Some reason my phone shows the 4G LTE symbol for connection but randomly when I go to access internet on any app I have no connection. I also dont receive any text messages (SMS or MMS). Only way around it is to send my phone into airplane mode then turn airplane mode off and I can surf fine and all my missed texts pop up all at once. I can be in exact same area and use data then randomly it stops functioning (repeat airplane mode procedure). I did research and some say it could be that sim card in the spring could have unaligned inside the phone. Tried that but to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? Would downloading stock firmware/factory settings fix this issue? Below is details on my phone.
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III (SGH-i747)
Android 4.0.4
Baseband I747UCLEM
Network APN: default AT&T PDA
I have unlimited data (used roughly 3.7gb) because I've tried the restorting to factory settings and google reinstalled all my apps couple times (forgot to use wifi instead of cell data). I figured maybe that was an issue that I used too much data and AT&T cuts me off. Im not sure if its the tethering app (only used once to test) did something to it. Phone worked fine for a couple weeks then randomly started cutting data out resulting in the airplane mode workaround.
Ok I've rambled enough. Final question: Is there a list that has AT&T Samsung Galaxy 3 SGH-i747 default APN settings so i can varify that mines weren't altered to cause this issue.
Thanks for reading and hopefully issue can be resolved. Thanks.

I just wanted to echo your problem. I have an AT&T S3 I747 and don't recall there being any network issues until I rooted my phone. I have unrooted, gone back to stock, and then even went back to stock ICS from JB and the network issue still seems to be there. I was curious if you found any ideas or fixes, or if anyone else has a fix or solution. I am running rooted stock Jellybean.
Im using my GS3 unroot with jelly bean 4.1.1 and dont seem to have the issue anymore. I went completely stock and I called AT&T to reset my data. Told them the issue I had (didnt mention i previously rooted) and rep reset my APN settings for my phone. I had to turn phone off for a few minutes then turned back on and all seems to work now. It still goes out sometimes but not as often since going from ics to jelly bean. Hope this helps. Dont think ill be rooting again anytime soon. Think problem started after I tried that free tethering/hotspot app for rooted users. This is messed with APN settings and caused problems.

Root by itself won't cause any issues. You used another app, in this case the tethering, which used root and messed up normal data on your phone. You can safely root just be careful what you do after that. Read, read, read.
Im on stock Rom[MF9] + rooted and got the phone officially unlocked through Sprint recently.
Since then, the phone hardly connects to 4g, its almost everytime connects to 3G only and speeds are very bad!!
I tried ##72786# reset and prl/profile update from system options and it hasnt been of any help.
Please suggest any way to troubleshoot this.
Change the mobile netowkt to just CDMA and see if that helps with 3G speeds.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
That worked to stabilize the 3g speeds.
But still wondering what went wrong that my phone even wont connect to 4g anymore!...
I'm checking couple of options since yesterday. If anyone got any suggestions other than resetting it to stock, please let me know...
you might also check and make sure that the unlock didnt clear out your LTE apn's......its not common but ive seen it happen before.
The issue is finally fixed and data speeds are back normal. I tries couple of things and not exactly sure which one fixed it.
Started off with cross checking all the entries of ##DATA# with another S4. --- this was ok
But noticed the APN kept going back to eHRPD.
I then got a APN manager app from play store and forced the APN to point to the correct profile and also cleared the LTE_available file in ##DATA#.
Once this was done, the phone connected to 4g shortly and is now working normally.
Hey guys.
So I decided to update my wife's phone. It was running some version of stock rooted NAE from way back in the day. Noticed it needs NG2 modem for the NG2 Roms to work, so I just updated to Sacs V6 until I had a computer handily available to Odin to stock, then root.
Well, here's the thing. After a few hours of Sacs, her phone had rebooted a few times and kept losing connection all together then reconnecting back to 3g for a split second before disconnecting again. Well, I got a hold of the PC and Odin'd to stock NG2. Then rooted.
Well, now it won't connect to anything when LTE/CDMA is active under network mode, and obviously ONLY connects to 3g when CDMA Only is active. This is a big problem as the 3g service in my area is MISERABLE.(lol sprint) anyone have any clue what the issue is?
On a side note, I was getting 3g on LTE/CDMA before I decided to restore defaults in the APN menu. Now I get absolutely nothing on LTE/CDMA.
My s5 has perfect 4g LTE connection, so I know its a phone issue.(unless the s5 and s4 run off different types of LTE[I have no clue])
Any help would be MUCH appreciated guys.
Try ##72786#
Gave it a go. Nothing. LTE on my s5, still no LTE on the wife's s4. She's getting perfect 3g though. Checked ##3282# as well. LTE is enabled in there as well.
Okay. Soooo, she still has no 4g and 3g is continuously disconnecting again. Completely reverted to stock, noticed she still had NAE baseband. Downloaded the modem separately. Installed both. Now she is on NG2 baseband as well, but still having the issues.
Could be hardware issue. If you've reverted and tried to reset and do hands free activation there's not much going on with the software.
That's what I was assuming as well. She's only three months out from an upgrade, so she can just wait it out I suppose. We've got an iPhone 5 she can use for 4g in the meantime.
The only thing that had me confused was before updating the ROM, 4g was working just fine.
Everyone we flash or modify we are at risk of numerous problems and issues. Why the developers put a disclaimer flash at your own risk. (and she could've dropped it without telling you )
Sorry about the delay. It seemed go fix itself guys. Must've been a widespread network issue in my area. Thanks to everyone though.
So I recently upgraded from my Nexus 6 to the 6P. Fantastic upgrade, except that there seems to be the issue I mentioned in this thread title.
Whenever I'm on LTE my MMS messages / group messages come in just fine. But whenever I'm connected to WiFi -- either at home or at work -- I'll get the blinking LED notification that I've received an MMS message and sometimes see the "Message is Downloading" placeholder, only it won't ever download. I physically have to disconnect from Wifi, and then the message will roll in a few moments later.
A few specs to hopefully help out: - T-Mobile user, phone is stock but unlocked/rooted. I've flashed a different kernel (Franco) but that's it. I live in Los Angeles, and this wasn't an issue with the old N6, but first made it's ugly appearance on the 6P. Wi-Fi calling is always on and preferred. I can literally pop my SIM out and into the old phone, and the MMS will send/receive just fine. It appears to be a 6P problem. I've tried disabling WiFi Calling but it doesn't resolve the issue.
ADDED NOTE: I primarily use Messenger, but I switched to Hangouts to see if it rectified the problem. Same problem persisted. Same with Textra.
I've had experience with flashing other ROMS/radios on the old N6. I'm hesitant to change to a different ROM because I'm pretty happy with how the phone is working with stock, and everything I change can basically be done with Nova Launcher.
I've downloaded the older radio files, and was ready to attempt flashing one of those, but it's very different with this new TWRP 3.00+ and different partitions. My confidence with that has vanished with the new 6.01 partition stuff. If this is a potential fix, any help in that area would be appreciated.
I've also changed and fiddled with the APN settings, hoping the change might improve the MMS issue. It hasn't. I'm using the suggested T-Mobile APN settings that pop up when searching for this issue.
I've been debating switching to Project Fi, but with the absolute reliance on WiFi this hiccup has given me a bit of pause regarding that switch. Specifically because it happens on my home Wifi in Culver City, then the business Wifi in Downtown Los Angeles, across both 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi bands.
Just looking for any help or suggestions. Thanks!

It's been this way for me for as long as I've owned an Android device. MMS has never worked over wifi for me....I've owned a Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 as well as some HTC and Samsung devices (quite a few). The only device I've ever owned that it worked on is my Mi Note Pro. Even then, it seems to toggle on mobile data and give it priority over wifi until the message is downloaded. I know this isn't a solution, but just letting you know that this is pretty common.
I've used sprint in the past but am now on T-Mobile

Yes MMS inherently built to use only mobile data.
However SMS applications have setting along the line: enable data when dealing with MMS.
For e.g.
That's what I mean by not being able to send/receive MMS on WiFi.
What messaging app is that?

I think that's a T-mobile issue. I used to get it all the time.
