So there's a lot of discussion going around about the device, minus the sound output. Can the users (if there are any audiophiles out there) please share your reviews about the music quality output from the device. This is purely with earphones plugged in and not the boomsound speakers. How is the bass, treble, mids, highs, etc. How is the earphones quality that is provided with the m8.
The z2 seems to be getting mixed reviews, hence i am eager to know about the m8. I know gsmarena has posted a review but i wanted more inputs from actual users. Will appreciate any inputs.Thanks.
The M8 reviews all say good things about the headphone output. Personally I think it's fantastic, highs, lows and mids are all very clear and well balanced. The M8 drives a lot higher voltage output compared to the M7 too, I read someone who measured it.

I can confirm that the output quality is amazing. Partly due to there being a 2.5v amplifier next to the headphone jack, is this correct regarding the amplifier?
i don't miss beats much as the m8 has sound just like it and due to hardware not an equalizer
Yea the m8 has an amplifier for both headphone jack and loud speakers
And yes this phone has the best stock audio quality I ever had with an phone...

I, too, can confirm that the sound output quality on headphones and speaker are phenomenal on this device - even without any sound mods flashed.
Tested the HTC in ear buds and as well as a sennheiser headset and a pair of pro Beyerdynamic headphones. All sounded absolutely clear and nice, even on Google Play Music All Access streaming.
So far, I am VERY pleased with audio quality on this baby.
i purchased and use regularly a set of jaybirds bluebuds (wirless stereo ear bud type headset) when at work. i havent used these since getting my htc m8 (used them with my htc one x) only just paired them. reading this thread i decided to try the included wired headset that are usually rubbish. long story short, they are incredible. i can honestly say that they sound like im in my lounge room listening to my harmon kardon amp and denon dvd player with the bass of my 15 inch sub. they sound that good. just a shame about the wire.
wow so many good reviews... htc seemed to have nailed the sound department with this phone...
Perfect speakers, useing earphones is very good the loudest output I've heard.

Does anyone have a slight hissing sound when playing music on low I can hear it. Or after music is done playing its there.
Also, if I'm playing music and I turn the volume off I can hear hissing through the loud speakers
I have a small dead pixel, and I didn't want to return it just for that.

I use a Pair of Logitech ue900 (399bucks on Logitech), with Quad Drivers (and those are pretty sensible on bad outputs, or too high output impedance).
I hear absolutely nothing which lets me wich for a better quality. You will probably have to buy in-ears/headphones for around 700-1500 bucks so you might complain.
I read on head-fi.org, that viper4android is just an Equalizer which mostly raises the amount of bass (NOT the quality of bass), and most people think "more bass = better soundquality". So tonality gets changed. A bit like when you activate "Boomsound" on the settings with headphones plugged in. This raises bass, treble, and the volume level, and in direct comparison (mostly with bad/cheap headphones) it might sound better.
But its not, the soundquality gets worse with that.
I personally use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39672554
But i cant tell you, if it really improves the audio quality. I only tried a half song with my ue 900, and i didnt really heared a difference. Maybe because the difference is too small, or that you HAVE to have a 2nd device to compare both at the same time, to hear any difference.
i also didnt heared any hiss or any distortions.
But i think.... Alot people are not turning "BoomSound" OFF, so the Treble is way too much, and this can be that hiss, people are complaining about.

+1 its similar to the beats on the one x... it just increases the loudness... of course the bass itself is not that bad but are you saying that boomsound is amplifying the sound similar to beats??
I only had "Beats Audio" via Mod on my desire HD like almost 2 years ago. So i cannot give you an exact comparison. But yes, it should be pretty similar.
At least, on my headphones (Beyerdynamic T90 / UE 900) with boomsound activated, it was un-listenable, because of TOO heavy treble (due to boomsound). Without the treble changes on that setting, it might even be nice, to make the sound on neutral headphoens more fun when needed.
I haven't tried the earphones that come with the device ('cause I already had a pair I use and I've never used a pair of packed-in earphones in the past), but the audio quality through my Sony earphones are fantastic. I switched BoomSound on and off and it does make it noticeably better if you're comparing them "side-by-side" like that, and despite what others say, I didn't notice it raising bass all that much. It felt like the audio got a bit less tinny and...hollow, and sounded like it was more surrounding my head, instead of sounding like it was coming from the sides and slightly farther away. A very...untechnical explanation, but that's the way I heard it.
Some extra tinkering in PowerAmp and having moved from an iPhone 5 to this baby, the pure giddy bliss I dive into every time I listen to music with this device is unimaginable.
Earphone sound quality-wise, you can't get much better than this.

I've owned the Z1, and the Z1 Compact. Now I'm hearing Z2 has the sale volume/crackly output.
I wear an earphone plugged directly into my phones jack when I talk and drive, and the audio quality on every sony phone is TERRIBLE. Crackly, distorted sound and every time the mic on the earphone touches any part of my shirt it cuts out all volume. I've tested this with 6 other android phones and no problems. Strangely though Windows Phone also suffers from this problem. Also audio output through a 3.5mm aux cable into the car produces extremely quiet sound on the highest volumes.
How has Sony not fixed this? I feel like this is bush league stuff.

So you're telling me when you plug in earphones directly into the jack, there is no change in sound, no crackling audio, no clarity or volume issues at all? Try plugging those same earbuds into another modern android phone or iphone and you'll hear zero interference or crackling issues.

I don't have Spotify so I don't know what it means in terms of extreme quality. They could be upsampling a bad source and call it extreme quality.

Spotify extreme quality = 320kbps encoding. The best you can get for streaming right now.
No problems here, the noise cancelling headphones are excellent too,
I had that same crackling on my Lumia 800, I could hear it when on low volume or on pause, really annoying.
I think most people just don't notice.

Yh i have the same issue on my Z1. I checked with CM11 or AOSP and there is no crackling in low volume so this is definalty not a hardware problem.
To reduce this Crackling sound while ising Stock i download a custom Kernel like DoomLord's and use Pimp My Z1 (or any app you prefer) to turn down the gain the in the sound options. The downside is that the volume becomes lower. This method doesnt get rid of it completely but it does reduce it. I honestly dont even bother with stock anymore i just use CM11 or PA on my Z1.
BTW i think this Noise is called Sibilance. G3 users are experiencing the same problem.
Also turning off ClearAudio+ reduces the crackling sound.
Cracking insinuates that there is a popping noise. I hear none. As far as noise, yes. There is a faint hiss at low volume, extremely faint. Sony isn't exactly a leader in SNR but the audio isn't necessarily bad. Anyone who is using ClearAudio+ (which is total s***) shouldn't even comment on audio issues, definitely turn that off. Clear Phase on the old 4.2.2 ROM caused some definite extreme distortion and cracking over Bluetooth (but not the headphone jack) but that has been removed in the new ROM.
Sibilance is the hiss sound you hear when people make "S" sounds into the microphone. It can be really harsh, but usually reducing frequencies around 4-6KHz will reduce the problem. Sibilance is extremely prevalent in analog FM Radio.
I currently have an issue where sometimes I only get sound out of one of the noise cancelling headphones. I have to rotate the headphone socket in the jack to get sound to come out of both. Sometimes I also get crackling on my e10s when the phone is in my pocket. I think I have a faulty headphone jack as the MDR1 work perfectly on my Z3TC.
Speaking with Sony UK they asked me to do a repair on the phone which seemed to help a little but the problems still exist. I expect my headphone socket has some damage or has become faulty.
Iv noticed that when i plug in my phone to the soundsystem i have to crank the volume up allot higher to get the same soundlevel out of the spekers as other phones. Anyone have a solution to get the volume up out of the phone? (3.5mm output)
So which earphones / cans do you use to listen to music.
On a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best, how would you rate the audio quality?
Have you used ASUS earphones/headphones with ZF2?
Discuss!
I used NT100 in-ear (I buy the 550ML, lowest spec, so no quick-charger and earphone included)
Playing music with PowerAMP, customize EQ, Limiting activated. At highest volume, I didn't hear any clipping like my old phone. I usually use it at 50-60% volume.
Really, I have to say that I could not diffrentiate between phones audio output once Viper4Android is installed with same settings. No earphones with my ZE551 4Gb ... I think US version gets that removed.
p.s: Using Yamaha EPH-50 Gold earbuds.

Try Viper4Android?
The speaker on the Zenfone is pathetic. The tiny single speaker on my old phone (iPhone 5) is both louder and clearer. I got the ASUS headphones with my 550, but they are awful (I hate all inner-ear headphones anyway, but these sound very muddy and over-bassy and they keep popping out of my ears). Get much better sound through my old iPhone buds, which I always thought sounded good despite getting a lot of criticism. Max volume of the phone seems a little low to me, and reduces still further if you turn off the ASUS AudioWizard. I would like to try the phone with viper4android and some better headphones.
+1 ASUS AudioWizard is needed for proper sound. I wonder if there is a way to boost the speaker just like MTK devices ... The speaker is as big as the G3 yet the G3 sounds 2x louder. Boosted speaker with viper4android, its better than stock now.
It's not bad or about middle of the road for me. Primarily use aux (jack) for the cars. Bluetooth works fine. Speaker sucks. That's the best description. When I need to use Waze (nav app) I need to jack in or use bluetooth since you won't really hear it. 3.5mm audio jack and bluetooth are on the quiet side but the only improvement over the sub par speaker.
im using jabra step bluetooth headset with viper4android..makes me feel like partying in a club using SRS Audio (Extreme Trubass) convolver..
I'm going to echo @aziz07 - AudioWizard is necessary. If you've disabled it thinking it was bloat, go back and restore it or push it from a stock ROM.
After I had "cleaned up" the ROM, I had the most hollow-sounding audio: no bass, it was all harsh mids and treble. In my car, the woofers were barely engaging. Viper4Android did nothing except bring up the mids and make it sound even more hollow. That's when I realized there was something else EQ-related that was missing. I then restored AudioWizard and all was well.
The audio quality is good with this phone. It's a bit bass heavy (when things are default), but that's pretty objective and easily adjusted. Using cheap in-ear earphones, there's thump.
I don't think it sounds as dynamic as my LG G2, but I can't make a direct comparison since my G2 died.
I'm no audiophile, but I'm VERY pleased with the output quality at low to mid volumes.

I know , it sounded like an empty can of coke  I told SuperZen Rom maker that it gives more power mA to AUX port ; he added AudioWizard backin R12 release. Along with viper4andorid, it beats my R.I.P lg g2 (Started freezing randomly then would not boot anymore ; anyway it felt so cheap to beginning with and was overheating all the time 74C ; this Zenfone rarely exceeds 50C unless using the 18W quick charge, yet still ~55C ; I have seen my SoC go as low as 29C and battery 25C - Intel 3D 22nm Tri-gate transistors :good.
I use Yamaha EPH-50 Gold (13.6mm drive) + Viper4Android with Sennheiser HD800 settings lol + AudioWizard Music ; the bass is so powerfull that it gives me a headache and I have to lower it lol
using a Xiaomi Piston 2 + Shuttle+ here
I can say that the sound quality is HORRIBLE,like one of the worst i've ever experienced. It's so bad i am cosider buying a used 32gb iPhone 5c for $175 just to listen to music
haha My iphone 4 sound like crap versus the Zenfone with the settings and boosts mentioned above. Read earlier posts or stay with iphone 5c. Same crappy sound with iphone6+ and worse is that you can't mod them and use Viper4Android. Bass is many times more powerfull in my car's stereo and Harman-Kardon home theater BIC PL-200 system.
Sound quality for me is pretty good. I've tried it with some Panasonic RPTCM125K in ears, koss KSC75, Grado SR60, and a Bose Soundlink mini. The Panasonic's sounded decent, if a little muffled, but no different than what I remember when using them with other phones. The KSC75s sound great, and have decent clarity. I also use them over Bluetooth with this phone via a g-cord wireless audio receiver (purchased on amazon). They sound quite good that way as well, maybe lacking a little detail. The grados sounded excellent, so I use those when I don't need to be moving around. the Bose sounded somewhat muffled. I'm not sure if equalizer settings on the phone and Soundlink were working against each other or what. Although, the Soundlink mini seems to be a bit finicky with the surface that you place it on, and I had it resting on my kitchen table when using it, so maybe that's what was causing it.
Audio characteristics aside, and I'm no audio expert, the audio amplifier used in this phone seems quite capable. TPA2080D1, in case you're wondering. The full Bill of materials can be found at http://www.ewisetech.com/Pages/Product/bom.aspx?s=1961&dt=6820
Edit: I'm running with the audio wizard turned off. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if there's still some equalizer adjustment going on in the background.

Are you using Viper4Android? It made a big difference here even for the external speaker, use Vocal Boost and maxout everything but don't use speaker optimization. You can also apply this systemwide by deleting 2 paragraphs in /system/etc/audio_policy ; --> See Zenfone 2 Resources thread in viper4android section. After audio_policy modding for better V4A compatibility, Its working with Tunein radio, making crappy 32kbps radio stations sound much better, it will work with Youtube, etc

I would wager a single speaker on the m8 is louder than the "two" HTC 10 speakers. It sounds okay, but it does not have the deepness of the m8 either. It is nice and clear, though.
It is fine for YouTube videos, but I wouldn't really say it is great for listening to music in a pinch. Definitely can't crank it up if you're trying to hear a video in public.
I am interested to see what it is capable of with a good eq once I root though. It sounds like it could still get louder without distortion. Definitely thankful they did the one speaker forward facing.
Sound pretty darn awesome. It's been awhile since I've had my M7-M9 but it beats the S7.

My opinion the M8 sounds better than the 10. I informally tested by playing the same tune on spotify, and the M8 had better sound, and the 10 sounded like it was in a ten can. However, I can say that the headphones, both wired and bluetooth, (Anker buds) sound better on the 10. FWIW,

Did you change the audio setting from theater mode to music mode? Theater mode is default which switches channels to play all frequencies, giving it surround sound versus music mode which makes the tweeters play high frequencies and the bottom speaker play the mids/lows.

I'm with the rest of the consensus in that the M8 is louder; however, using PowerAMP and a custom EQ setting I found on YouTube, the 10 is much better sounding. The range is full and clear. I'm really liking it!

my speakers sound pretty bad i think. im not sure if there is a problem with them or not tho. does the bottom speaker sound louder than the top on everyone else's phone? i tried both speaker modes and it does nothing to help hear the top speaker better. i have to cover the bottom one to be able to hear the top one at all. currently it sounds like i only have a bottom speaker when using them.

Sounds defective to me. Top tweeter plays highs very well and is complimented by the mids and lows in the bottom speaker.
They both play together like a car system that has separate speakers to focus on particular frequencies instead of having both trying to play every frequency (like the M series) which hurts sound clarity.
Yea it may not sound as loud as the M series but the response is much better. There are phones out there that are louder than the M8,M9 but don't sound nearly as soon. Same concept but for the 10 versus M, quality over quantity.

Yeah I wasn't really comparing it to my m9 simply because I knew it wouldn't sound the same based on speaker placement. That said I did expect better and why I am worried if it's defective since I can barely hear the top unless the bottom is covered. I expected be be able to pick up on sounds coming out of both easily even if the highs and lows were separated.

My 10 is louder, but I think my M9 sounds a lot better. The M9 has a much more full sound to me.
It's good but it's got a massive and obvious flaw. the woofer being on the bottom of the phone and the tweeter being on the top means the sound is different depending on where you hold it. Dead in front of you with the tweeter and woofer equidistant from your ears, yeah, it sounds great, anywhere else - especially if you hold it landscape, eg. when watching a video - weird.
It's absolutely stellar with headphones though, which is the main way I listen.

That's why you put it in theater mode when you watch a video. It changes all channels to play all frequencies giving that surround sound feel, basically allowing both speakers to play everything. However, it'll reduce how clear it'll sound but it's obviously not for music. Pure genius from HTC.

I have noticed something: when i hear music that sounds in both speakers, the sound quality is very good ( i´m using poweramp), but when I hear the ringtone that only sound in the lower speaker and sounds very muffled and low
Somebody here have noticed that?
Solutions?
Thanks guys for the comments, I have only one question left...
- Currently I own a Lumia 950XL (I gave it a shot) and the way it records audio/bass anything its way better than anything from the HTC lineup was, of course M7 was really close due to the microphone from Nokia but I am curious how the m10 handles realllllly loud club/concert sounds.
Anyone care to try that out? thanks
Is this headphone hissing sound common in all mi a1 phones or is there some hardware issue?
hiss
Is your phone plugged in and charging when you get the hiss? im thinking its a hardware fix. It's not easy to notice it, at 1st I thought mine was OK - but play any tune that has some lower volume parts and you can hear it. Also, play any MP3, pause it - and you will hear the high pitched whine / hiss - it sort of sounds like electronic interference of some sort. So the sound is always there just masked until quieter passages. To test , use headphones, turn up the volume, play an mp3, use YouTube - anything with audio, then PAUSE the item and listen - you will hear a second or so of the noise, then it will stop.

Just noticed this last night :/. I was using apple earpods. changed to sony headphones, and the issue is gone. weird though
I'm interested in buying this phone but I'm holding off on it because of this widespread headphone audio issue. I'm surprised that this is such an issue... especially since the phone's supposed to have a 10v amplifier and Xiaomi's marketing the phone's HD audio? WTF.
I just need to know if this is affecting only Indian models or all models.
It's not that big of a deal mate you can only for a couple seconds when it goes silent, the audio on this is great

What about this thread? https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/71xrqz/mi_a1_headphone_static/
Seems like a fairly serious issue. And I like my volume loud (90+) so if static is apparent at higher volumes, I'll be extremely upset.
I'm extremely skeptical about the audio quality of this device. I can totally see it being above average or devices from the same price segment but I'm sure it isn't something from another world. People seem to over praise it and I'm sure most of them are just considering loudness as audio quality.

with some half decent earphone this phone sounds great not just loud mate
I'm having same issue.
This might caused by the audio amplifier boosted the volume gain which increases the static noise and taints audio clarity.
Earphone/headphone which has more than 35ohm impedance and low sensitiviy pressure level below 98dB might have better chance with the boosted gain.
Even on ATH M40X, the background static noise is still noticeable when sound is played. *sigh
I wish the amplifier is disabled by default and could be enabled on demand from equalizer app.
@chrone Exactly, I'm willing to see how it will perform with biquads mod (if it is possible)
Hey guys I've just noticed that I get the same hissing sound on my nvidia shield K1 but I never noticed it lol

I just tested it with my bluetooth headphone. It's working good and I don't hear any weird sounds/hissing etc. But does the amplifier work if I use bluetooth headset?

I bought ones from JBL, no difference. A LOT of hissing :/.
Maybe someone can fix this in a custom ROM?

Seems like a low impedance problem? There is a thread on reddit about this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/71xrqz/mi_a1_headphone_static/
Audio Quality is awesome on both the speaker and headphone jack. I have no issues. I am already getting mod like quality from this one.
I have this problem too using Audio-Technica Mx 40x and xioami hybrid. It's becoming quite annoying
