[Q] how can I update to kitkat manually? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I've searched a bit for this and couldn't find anything, so I thought it was because it's a bit of a noob question...
So yesterday I rooted my international exynos note 3 (sm n900) via CF auto-root. Everything worked fine. I was wondering if there was a way to update my phone to kitkat, since it's attached to a provided that hasn't released kitkat officially yet...
Or do I have to wait until it's released officially for my carrier, then unroot, update and reroot?
Thanks

Hhow can I update to kitkat manually?

The Android 4.4 overhaul has begun taking off to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets far and wide. In any case if your tablet has yet to get the upgrade, then don't lose hope — we've got a brisk walkthrough that'll get you upgraded shortly, expecting you've got a little encounter with a charge line.
The process
1. Place the update .zip package from Google in the Android SDK/platform-tools folder on your computer, but do not unzip it.
2. On your Nexus, go to Settings > Development options and switch the toggle on. Then enable USB debugging under the "Debugging" menu group.
3. Power down your tablet
4. Start up the bootloader by holding down volume up, volume down and power on your tablet.
5. When the menu loads, plug your Nexus into your computer.
6. Use the volume up/down keys to navigate to "Recovery mode", then press the power button.
7. When the Android with the red exclamation point appears, hold down power first, followed quickly by volume up. You should now see the recovery menu.
8. Use the volume up/down keys to select "apply update from ADB," then press power to select it.
9. On your computer, open up a command prompt or terminal window.
10. Using the command line, navigate to the Android SDK/platform-tools folder
11. On Windows, type:
adb.exe sideload <the complete name of the OTA zip file you want to flash>
... or on Mac, type:
./adb-mac sideload <the complete name of the OTA zip file you want to flash>
... or on Linux, type:
./adb sideload <the complete name of the OTA zip file you want to flash>
12. The update should begin installing. When it's done, select "reboot system now."
13. Enjoy some delicious KitKat

Okay, thanks for the quick reply!
It's a Samsung galaxy note 3 (phone/phablet) what I have, not sure it that matters in the process.
Also... this Android SDK/platform-tools folder. I don't have such folder, do I create it on the computer?
Does it matter which kind of update.zip package I download? (like it the model number matters).
Also, I asked about manual update because when I try to go ota it tells me that I can't do that, because the phone has been modified of something like that, which is because of root I assume.

Go to Sammobile or find a stock KK rom on here somewhere for your model... Put phone in download mode, flash Kitkat with ODIN - your choice but I flashed with 3.09. You might need to factory reset.... You can't go back to JB after this due to bootloaders...
Flash LATEST cf-autoroot for root....
Enjoy....

OK. Thanks a lot, just a few last questions...
I found kitkat firmware file for my model (SM-N900) on sammobile, country says India, does it matter? (I'm not ni India).
So I follow the instructions and then I need to root again after flashing kitkat on it? I'd like to keep root access...

Go to the top where it says to check my firmware. It will give you the right firmware... Doesn't matter though however there may be some things that work in your region but not in indian rom... And vice versa...
You will need to re-root after. Make sure it is the latest cf-autoroot as using an older version won't work and will softbrick your phone - bootloops or hanging on Samsung logo...

"adb sideload" stuck
I am an intermediate noob at this (whatever that means) so bare with me. Phone was purchased, second-handed w/root. I messed with root permissions which resulted in BRICK... stuck on Samsung logo when powered on. Tried to upload stock rom via sd card; too long and phone too hot. Now, doing adb sideload, got up to 67%, then it just sits there. Is there anything I may have to upload before the stock ROM, so that the process can go through easier? Please, please help!! Thank you.

[GUIDE] [NS4G] Simple Root/Unroot

This guide is the easiest way to root and unroot your nexus s 4g. If you follow the instructions well you should be fine, included is odin and the files needed if something goes wrong, but it shouldn't as my 11 year old sister could follow them correctly. READ ENTIRE POST BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS PLEASE.
If your pc doesn't recognize your phone in fastboot make sure your sdk is up to date including thirdparty installs, and download pdanet trial version and those drivers will work. get drivers here http://hotfile.com/dl/92897696/7ae5290/drivers.rar.html
or if your not comfortable installing drivers download pdanet here and install as it will automatically install drivers for you
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php
ROOTING..................
Ok download the files attached and extract them. For the first part for rooting you will need the:
superuser.zip
recovery3101.img
-Ok put the superuser.zip on the sdcard of your phone.
-Power off phone, when off hold volume up and power button to get to bootloader.
-Go the the tools folder of your android sdk and open command prompt and enter the following command: (easiest way is to hold shift and right click on tools folder and hit the button that says "open command window here" then type these command...
fastboot devices (make sure your device shows up, if not your drivers aren't installed)
fastboot oem unlock
-this will unlock the bootloader and you should follow the prompt and accept (volume up, then power button)
-Some have reported unlocking the bootloader erases sdcard..if so when you reboot after unlocking make sure to put superuser.zip back on sdcard.
-this should reboot your phone, now power off, when off hold volume up and then power button to get back to bootloader.
-place the recovery3101.img in the tools folder and type the following command
fastboot flash recovery recovery3101.img
-You should see it say flash ok in the command prompt, now scroll down (on phone) to recovery and hit the power button (ok button)
-Go to flash zip from sdcard and select the superuser.zip and let it flash.
-when done reboot phone, sign into google accnt, download rom manager, open up rom manager go down to All clockworkmod recoverys and flash 3.1.0 (the newest recovery doesn't work for me as my phone can't get into recovery that is why we are flashing the other one )
-All set you can flash other roms, MAKE SURE TO CREATE BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT STOCK ROOTED ROM FIRST.
UNROOTING.........
Get files http://www.4shared.com/file/N5g8Hav_/root.html?]
-download and extract files, we will be using odin, the 3 tar files.
-extract tar files to desktop along with odin.
-run odin and in the files section select the boxes bootloader, pda, phone.
-click the buttons next to each and direct it to the .tar files we extracted to desktop, so....
click the bootloader box, direct it to sph-d720-bootloader.tar ...then..
click the pda button direct it toward the sph-d720-pda.tar....then..
click the phone button and direct it toward sph-d720-phone.tar....
-now turn off your phone, when off hold volume up and volume down buttons simultaneously, then quickly press the power button....a huge yellow triangle will pop up and say "downloading'.......
plug your phone via usb to computer....odin should automatically see it.....click the start button in odin and let it do its thing and bam...all set.
If you want stock recovery too place the recovery.img in tools folder, open command prompt..type the following command..
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Done.
Ill give this a try when I get home....but I'm sure you need to make sure you have all the correct drivers installed...or when you run the fast boo command it won't recognize your phone is connected.
Subbed for when I have time.
Since the NS4G doesn't have a SD Card where do you put the superuser zip?
This will work for the 3g version, correct?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
yes it should work for 3g

I can't seem to get this to work. I have Win7 64 and I used PDAnet to install the drivers but when I get to the part where I have to type "fastboot oem unlock" the command prompt just says < waiting for device > and there is nothing on the Nexus S 4g other than the normal fastboot options for me to select.

Make sure you installed the right drivers....reboot computer, make sure you opened the command prompt in the tools folder as that is where the fastboot commands are located....also it will automatically reboot in the "unlock bootloader menu" you don't select anything...until that menu comes up..make sure your sdk is updated as well..even third party installs..
I want to thank you, these are great instructions so far. I have been trying for days, got my phone unlocked by a mistake, had to Odin back (came from Epic so know and love that system), but it stayed unlocked.
I cannot get it rooted. Used your instructions and get to second part - cannot install fasboot recovery.
My files are in tools listed as recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-crespo4g. I ran fastboot, came up with a large square of instructions, not ok, with command and option. So I tried again. nothing
Then went to phone with it connected, tried to select from card the su file. It goes to yellow triangle and finally get back to a reboot.
I am so close, can you help with what I am doing wrong? It is not rooted and cannot get it to do anything.

[GUIDE] Upgrading your Verizon r800x to CM9

Recently I posted about Sony/Verizon finally allowing meid unlock of the r800x.
I thought I'd come back and write up a little guide to help those of you that are wanting to upgrade your Verizon r800x device to a fresh install of CM9.
Things You'll Need
Unlocked Bootloader
Xperia Fastboot Drivers
Android SDK
Cyanogenmod 9 (I used the 2012-11-25 nightly)
Flash Tool (Links are under installation)
Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT
Gapps for CM9
Keiran & Atarii's CDMA Fix (There are some touchpad fixes out there too but I'm not covering those as I chose not to use them)
Recovery Play
Setup Stage
Download everything listed above.
Install Flash Tool and copy Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT into Flash Tool's firmware folder
You'll want to get Android SDK installed.
In the SDK manager, you want to be sure to have platform tools and Google USB driver checked and installed.
Unlock your bootloader following the steps on Sonys Unlock Bootloader webpage. Congrats your bootloader is now unlocked.
Start your phone and connect your usb connect your SD card to the PC.
Make a folder to store your rom setup files and copy the Cyanogenmod 9 Zip, Gapps, and Keiran & Atariis CDMA Fix Zip to that folder. Unmount USB Storage.
Back up your app data using Titanium Backup or some other tool to your SD card.
Navigate to the install path of your Android SDK and locate the platform-tools folder.
Open up the CM9 Zip file and extract boot.img to the platform-tools folder.
Also copy the recoveryPLAY.img to the platform-tools folder.
Run the command prompt and navigate to your platform-tools folder. Keep the command prompt open throughout this whole guide.
Code:
cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools
for example
Disconnect your USB cord from the phone and shut the phone off. Hold the search button and plug the USB cord back in.
You should see a blue light. If windows can't find the drivers for your fastboot, point it to the platform-tools folder.
Run the following code and when that is complete run the 2nd command:
Code:
fastboot boot recoveryPLAY.img
fastboot reboot
Unplug your usb and press the back/return button on your phone until you see ClockworkMod show.
Navigate to backup/restore and choose to backup your phone (home is up, list is down, search is enter). We are doing this incase something goes wrong with with your Cyanogen install, in which case you will simply restore your phone.
Poweroff the phone.
Start Flash Tool, press the lightning icon and select flash mode. Select Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT and click next.
Hold the back button on your phone, insert the USB cord, and press the power button to start flash mode when flash tool asks you to.
Boot your phone and activate your service using verizons *228 program. After the phone reboots, turn it off.
Back at your command prompt, run the following codes and then immediately unplug the USB cord.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
Your phone should start and you should see a FXP boot screen, start pressing the volume down button to enter into recovery.
Navigate through clockworkmod using your vol up/down keys and choose the install zip from SD option (home is enter).
Select choose zip from SD card and navigate to your CM9 zip you copied to your SD card earlier. Select yes.
After install completes, repeat the step above but this time choose your Gapps Zip file.
Lastly repeat the step again and this time choose Keiran & Atariis CDMA Fix Zip.
Reboot your phone and hopefully if everything went well, your phone will start up into the OS after a minute or two.
Go through the setup that pops up (you shouldnt need to activate your service, you did that previously in the fresh 2.3.4 install).
Lastly open up voice dialer and say Open APN and it should come up with an option to Open APNs. Select it.
That should bring you to a screen and there should be an option for Verizon Wireless, select that and return to your home screen. You're done.
If for whatever reason you encounter problems. Boot into recovery and restore your 2.3.4 backup.
I am not responsible for any botched upgrade attempts. You assume the risk when you unlock your bootloader and all modding attempts made on it.
This guide was writen as a suggested route one can take for upgrading your phone and any problems encountered along the way were not my doing.
Search the Xperia Play Forums if you encounter any weird problems.
This is a great guide! Good luck CDMA users! First

What I meant was, skip the recovery part, and don't flash the kernel that comes with CM9. Get LuPuS CM9 kernel. Has it's own built in CWM (6.0) and it's great. Tons of useful features.
Thanks For The Guide it helped alot!
Help. Bootlooping?
Thanks for writing this guide. I"ve read that the initial boot in to CM9 takes forever, but how do I decide if I've waited too long and I'm bootlooping? Also, all of the procedures I've read talk about fixing a boot loop by returning to the stock firmware. I want CM9 and don't want to return to stock.

I fixed it: I booted in to Recovery mode by holding the volume down button and then I used it to wipe user data. Then rebooted and booted in to CM9 in less than 2 minutes.
Is there any way to do this with out activating your phone? I have a Galaxy Nexus and don't wan to deactivate it just to flash a rom.

Yeah i actually had this happen to me a few times on other roms. It usually boils down to wiping cache/dalvik after the install, and sometimes user data.
No worries, found what I needed.

Sorry, I didn't explain my self right. Since the phone I'm currently using right now is Galaxy Nexus and is activated and my Xperia Play is not in service, is there another way to flash CM9 without having to activate your Xperia Play? (Step 21)
When i do the fastboot flash boot boot.img it says everything did well but my phone wont boot. I dont know what im doing wrong...
The Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT file seems to be down.
the links for verizons android 2.3.4 no longer contain the file. can anybody point me to the right direction where i can obtain the file.
Problem with step 19
Hi guys
flashtool is not recognizing the Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT file. i copied and pasted the file in the firmware of the flash tool but its not showing up in the firmware section. I notices that the file extenetion is .ftf inseted of .tft i changed the extention to .tft but it still didnt show up.
I don't know what tft is (it's FTF) but I have the 2.3.3 (.88) and the 2.3.4 (.57) both on my dropbox account. Just click my link and foloow it to the correct folder and file. Enjoy.

Please consider the following:
Ask yourself these two questions: "Why do I want to unlock my bootloader? Why do I need root access?" If the answer to either one of those is "I don't know," don't do it. Both of these actions weaken the security of your phone, and there's no reason to do that if you're not sure why.
This guide is for the Droid Turbo, model XT1254. It is not for the Droid Turbo 2, and it is not for any phone that is not named Droid Turbo.
Standard XDA rules apply. I'm not responsible for anything you do, and neither is anyone else other than you.
I'm assuming that you are running a Windows PC. If you have a Mac, I can't help you. If you're running Linux, you shouldn't need help.
This method is not free. It costs $25 (USD). If that's not okay with you, don't do this.
Once your bootloader is unlocked, you CANNOT safely re-lock and unlock it again. See this thread for what happens when you try to do that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/help/relocked-bootloader-bricked-t3306081#post65095391
Still here? Cool.
Section 0: Installing Firmware Version MCG24.251-5
1. Go to Settings -> About phone -> Build number. If it says SU4TL-44, SU4TL-49 or MCG24.251-5, skip to section 1 of this guide. If it says MCG24.251-5-5, you need to take an extra step to unlock your bootloader. I'll explain later. For now, just skip to section 1 of this guide. If it says anything else, keep reading.
Flashing MCG24.251-5 using this method will erase all of your data. Back up any important files/information before proceeding.
2. Download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790.
3. Download and install the Motorola Device Manager from here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
4. Download the MCG24.251-5 firmware package from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=889764386195901169
5. Extract the contents of the MCG24.251-5 firmware package to the installation directory of Minimal ADB and Fastboot (C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot on any 64-bit installation of Windows).
6. Power off your phone.
7. Hold down the volume down button and power on your phone. Release the volume down button when you see that the phone has booted into bootloader mode. You'll see a dead green android.
8. Plug the phone into your computer.
9. Open the Minimal ADB and Fastboot shortcut on your desktop. This will open a command prompt.
10. Type "fastboot devices" and press enter. If it displays your device's serial number, you're ready to go. If it displays nothing, your computer is not recognizing your device properly.
11. Navigate to the installation directory of Minimal ADB and Fastboot and double click on FlashAll.bat. This will flash MCG24.251-5 to your device and erase all of your data.
12. Use the power button to select Start in the bootloader menu to boot normally.
13. Set up your phone at least to the point where you can install apps if you want to.
For now, just try to ask someone nicely to help you out with this. I'll try to get this done before the end of the day.
Section 1: Unlocking the Bootloader
1. Download Sunshine from here: http://theroot.ninja/download.html
2. Move the apk file to a convenient location on your phone. If you downloaded it with your phone, it's in your downloads folder already, so leave it there.
3. Use any file browser on your phone to navigate to the folder that contains the Sunshine apk file. Tap on it to install it.
4. If a message comes up and says that you need to enable installation of apps from unknown sources, follow the instructions on that message to enable it.
5. Enable Wi-Fi on your phone if it is disabled. Even if you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi network, it still needs to be on.
6. !!!DO THIS STEP ONLY IF YOU'RE ON MCG24.251-5-5!!! Follow the instructions here to obtain temporary root: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4-play/development/root-autoinitroot-motorola-bootloader-t3639316/. DO NOT perform the uninstall step.
7. Open your app drawer and start Sunshine.
8. Follow the instructions.
9. !!!FOR MCG24.251-5-5 ONLY!!! Sunshine will reboot your phone automatically, and it will go into a bootloop. This is normal. Don't panic. Hold down the volume down button until the phone goes into bootloader mode. Plug your phone into the computer, start Minimal ADB and Fastboot (see Section 0 for link if you didn't have to install it before this point), and enter the command fastboot oem config fsg-id "". This will disable the temporary root exploit. Reboot your phone normally, and everything should be happy again.
10. If, when your phone reboots, you see a "Warning: The bootloader is unlocked" message, you have successfully unlocked your bootloader. If you do not see this message, open Sunshine again and follow the directions again. If you're on MCG24.251-5-5, you'll have to gain and uninstall temproot again at the appropriate times.
Section 2: Installing TWRP
Team Win Recovery Project is arguably the most important tool to have on a bootloader-unlocked phone. This is how you install it:
1. Download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790. If you already did this in section 0, you don't have to do it again.
2. Download the latest TWRP .img file from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=39562
NOTE: The TWRP file that you download should have a .img extension. Make sure you can see this. If you don't see .img at the end of the filename, Google how to make file extensions visible on your version of Windows and do it. If you do not do this, you may run into trouble later.
3. Download and install the Motorola Device Manager from here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481. If you already did this in section 0, you don't have to do it again.
3. Rename the file that you downloaded in step 2 to TWRP.img
4. Copy TWRP.img to the directory that you installed Minimal ADB and Fastboot to. The default location on an installation of 64-bit Windows is C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
5. Turn off your phone.
6. Hold the volume down button and press the power button to boot into bootloader mode. You should see a green android lying on his back with his chest open, and some information about your phone. Poor little guy...
7. Plug your phone into your PC.
8. Double click on the Minimal ADB and Fastboot shortcut that's on your desktop. It will open a command prompt.
9. Type "fastboot devices" without quotes and press enter. If it gives you your phone's serial number, you're good to go. If it gives you nothing, your device is not detected. This can happen for several reasons, and I won't discuss them here. However, if you followed these directions and all of your hardware is functioning properly, you should be good to go.
10. Type "fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img" without quotes and press enter. It should tell you that the flash was successful. You might see some "not found" errors. These are normal and can be ignored.
11. Highlight "Recovery mode" on your phone using the volume up and down buttons.
12. Press the power button to boot into TWRP.
13. TWRP will boot, and it will ask you if you want to allow write access to the system partition. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ALLOW THIS. Check the box that says to never ask this question again.
14. Select Reboot, followed by System to boot the phone normally.
Section 3: Gaining Root Access
If you intend to install a custom rom, these steps are not necessary. Custom roms almost always come with root access built in. Refer to the thread of your custom rom of choice for installation instructions.
If you do not want a custom rom, and you simply want root access on the stock Droid Turbo rom, continue reading.
1. If you are on the stock marshmallow rom, build MCG24.251-5 or higher, download the latest version of both Magisk and Magisk Manager to your phone: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445.
NOTE: You need to be on marshmallow to use Magisk to root your phone. The Magisk thread says it supports lollipop and higher, but it only supports lollipop for some stock Samsung roms. This does not apply to you. If you want to root your phone on lollipop, you'll need to use SuperSU. I won't go into that here because I don't think there is a lot of demand for it, but if you need help with that, reach out to someone here. It's not difficult.
2. Install Magisk Manager the same way you installed Sunshine.
3. Turn off your phone.
4. Hold the volume down button and press the power button to boot into bootloader mode. You should see a green android lying on his back with his chest open, and some information about your phone. Andy, what have they done to you?
5. Use the volume up and down buttons to highlight "Recovery mode."
6. Press the power button to select Recovery mode.
7. Select Install from the TWRP main menu.
8. Select the most recent version of Magisk (the .zip file, NOT the Magisk Manager .apk file) that you downloaded.
9. Swipe the bar at the bottom of the screen to flash this zip file.
10. When it finishes, select Wipe Cache/Dalvik and swipe the bar at the bottom of the screen.
11. Select Reboot System
Section 4: Passing Safetynet using Stock, Unrooted Marshmallow
If you are running stock marshmallow with an unlocked bootloader, you will fail safetynet verification (and be unable to use Android Pay). Installing Magisk is the only recommended method, as of this writing, to bypass this limitation. If you completed Section 3, you shouldn't have any trouble. Understand, however, that there is a constant game of cat and mouse going on between Google and Magisk's developer, so sometimes Google will update safetynet to beat Magisk. If that happens, wait for Magisk Manager to tell you that a new version of Magisk is available, and it will install the new version for you. That's your best bet for passing safetynet again.
If you really want to pass safetynet, but you really don't want to be rooted, you can disable root (Superuser access) in the Magisk Manager settings.

Section 6: Troubleshooting
Issue: When you try to boot TWRP, you see a screen that says "no command." TWRP does not boot.
Solution: The screen you are seeing is the stock Droid Turbo recovery menu (the menu that you're trying to replace with TWRP). If you see this after flashing TWRP, one of two things happened:
-You did not boot into the recovery menu immediately after flashing TWRP, and it was therefore replaced by the stock recovery menu.
-When you flashed TWRP, the process did not complete successfully.
The solution to both of these problems is to repeat section 2 and follow the instructions more carefully.
Issue: When TWRP asked you if you wanted to allow write access to the system partition, you selected no. Now you cannot flash anything.
Solution: At the main TWRP menu, select Mount. Uncheck the box that says "Mount system partition as read-only."
Issue: Fastboot says "cannot load TWRP.img" when you try to flash it.
Solution: This error indicates that Fastboot cannot find TWRP.img. The most common source of this problem is that you did not make your file extensions visible, and so when you renamed the TWRP file to TWRP.img, you actually renamed it to TWRP.img.img (including the hidden .img file extension that you didn't realize was there). Google how to enable file extensions on your version of Windows, follow those instructions, and if this is the issue you will see it.
nice write up - will follow these when I get my phone tomorrow.
worked!
Just tried this. Worked amazingly, and exactly as you described! Thanks!!
Thanks just got this phone yesterday. I came from a Verizon s4 with a unlockable bootloader so now running cm on a phone is really awesome for me. Although I was concerned about the $25. I love paying people for there work but it seemed different and I was expecting the app to be a scam or something. However everything went okay. I wish there was a way to get viper4android working. Does anyone know about that? I thought installing cm would have fixed the issue. Anyways thanks a lot. I wonder if I can change my username. Lol.
I keep getting a "no command" screen after step 6 in section 3. Everything else worked perfect. Any ideas?

Nope, no matter what I do, it stays on that screen. I have to reboot and then it returns to normal. I've followed all of the steps twice now and got the same results each time. I do have the phone still plugged into the computer charging.

The screen that you're seeing is the stock Droid Turbo recovery menu, which means that TWRP is not getting flashed. What result does it give you after section 2, step 10?

Yeah, I did the exact same thing. The MDK bootloader is golden. I broke my phone once and almost cried. Luckily, I was able to get another MDK on Swappa. The seller wasn't even charging extra for it! He/she must not have known what they had.
As for Viper4Android, I've added a link to section 4 that you might want to look at.

Thanks! If I can only remove all the brony stuff from the app. Lol. I guess I can change the icon. I have to pretend at least that I don't have a mangina when I'm with my friends. No seriously this post made my day. I thought I was stuck without viper on my phone.

successful for me, thanks!
to comment on @22e issue, I had the same problem. i was able to correct it by copying the TWRP.img file to the same directory as the minimal adb fastboot files were installed in.
also, a shortcut after flashing TWRP is to type "fastboot reboot-bootloader". this will return back to bootloader rather than having to reboot, power off, and then press the buttons to get to bootloader.
hope this helps.
Awesome post. It definitely will come in handy. One question, at what point should I create a backup image via twrp? Is it before section 3 step 7?

Thanks for the help.
After I got stuck, I downloaded and installed KingRoot. It successfully rooted my phone. I downloaded two different root checkers and they confirmed. Everything works correctly within Rom Toolbox Pro now, I can remove apps (stupid NFL mobile, Amazon, etc). My software status says "Modified". I did not need to format or anything like that. Is that normal? My only issues are with XBlast Tools and SuperSU, when I change a setting in XBlast, it does NOT get updated. Even after a reboot. In SuperSU cannot update binaries for some reason.
I cannot post outside links for screen shots yet.

DISCLAIMER: Please do this at your own risk! I am not responsible for any damage or bricking done to phone. This should NOT trip knox or void your warranty however no promises can be made. Device can always be unrooted by flashing back to stock with Odin3. Please read all the steps first and preferably watch included videos so to be aware of what to expect. Average time to perform this should be under an hour assuming you do not run into any problems.
Don't be overwhelmed by all the steps. I intentionally dumbed down the process to prevent any mistakes. I wrote this as I personally rooted my own device with instructions gathered from my own research as I would come across my own challenges in the rooting process. This guide was made for first timers and experts a-like. Links to all the different guides I used and additional troubleshooting information is at the bottom. I suggest you glance at it before beginning. Thank you to all the people on the internet, in the forums and YouTube who asked questions and posted answers; allowing me to unlock my device. My hope is this guide will help ease the process and shrink the learning curve of anyone who reads it.
*If you have any problems AFTER rooting READ the TROUBLESHOOTING section at the bottom of this guide BEFORE posting any questions*

========
PHASE 1
========
- Prepping the Phone -
========================================
Things to do ON PHONE BEFORE using KingOroot
========================================
!!DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS SECTION!! A lot of people have problems because they don't first check/read these 10 prep steps!
1) BACK UP ALL FILES ON SD CARD TO PC!
Make sure you DO NOT REMOVE YOUR SIM CARD throughout this entire process!
Connect your device to your computer
Make sure the Note 4 is set for media transfer the option will be in the drop down from the top of the phone once USB is connected.
Copy over files from SD card (and phone if you want) to a folder on your PC just like you would with any USB stick.
2) FORMAT SD CARD. *AFTER* backing up the card you will have to format the card through the phone in the settings under: storage > SD Card > Format SD CARD
3) !!MAKE SURE YOU ARE RUNNING ANDROID VERSION 5.1.1.!! If you are not check the forum and video instructions in the links below to change firmware.
4) Download NEWEST VERSIONS of all files from this guide. Best way to do this is do a google search for the file followed by "XDA". i.e. "KingRoot xda". This will bring you to the xda forum to make sure you get authentic, verified and current versions of the files.
5) Make sure to download "eMMc Brick checker" from play store. Run it and make sure the phone CID starts with a "15". If it doesn't STOP HERE! You CANNOT root your phone!
6) Download "Root Checker" to confirm if root was successful after running KingOroot/KingRoot/etc.
7) Make sure "Developer Options" is open and USB debugging is enabled. You can turn it on by going to: Settings > About Phone > then tap on "Build Number" ten (10) times to unlock the option.
8) Also make sure "Reactivation Lock" in UNCHECKED. Go to Settings > (under "Personal") Security > (and under "Find My Mobile") uncheck "Reactivation Lock"
9) Additionally in: Settings > (under "Personal") Security, make sure "unknown sources" is checked.
10) Finally open and run Keis and SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones to ensure the PC can communicate with the phone (this should also be done BEFORE running Odin3 if you need to change your firmware to 5.1.1).
=========
PHASE 2
=========
- Rooting the Phone -
1) Make sure you have at least 80% battery life
2) Run KingOroot (KingRoot works too but the other one seems to be better)
3) After program is finished run Root Checker to confirm root. (If you are using the PC version of KingOroot disconnect the phone from PC FIRST, THEN run Root Checker and proceed to step 4)
4) Connect phone to PC .
5) Place the file "samsung_unlock_n4_fix" in the same folder "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" is installed (make sure the program is installed first)
*Before proceeding to step 6 it is suggested you copy ALL of step 6 into a notepad. You will need to copy and paste these line into the command prompt because if you take too long to input the script then the phone will reset before you're finished causing you to have to redo steps 2 - 4.*
6) Run "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" and type in (or preferably copy and paste) these lines one by one, pressing "enter" after each line (if after typing the first line and it says "List of devices attached 123a12ab offline" refer to troubleshooting section below):
Scroll down through the code. There are eight (8) lines!
Code:
adb devices
adb push samsung_unlock_n4-fix /data/local/tmp/
adb shell
su
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 777 samsung_unlock_n4-fix
chown root.root samsung_unlock_n4-fix
./samsung_unlock_n4-fix
7) The command window will now display this:
Code:
[+] CID at boot time is/was: 1501xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
[+] device not yet dev CID, now changing to dev CID
[+] programming new CID 150100523231384d4100657e54fc1200
[+] success! powering off device, power back on and verify CID
[+] then run this binary again to finish the process
8) Allow device to reboot. After full reboot, power down and pull battery.
9) After restarting do steps 2 through 6 again.
10) This time you will get a message in the command prompt that will say:
Code:
[+] CID at boot time is/was: 150100523231384d4100657e54fc1200
[+] dev CID matching, proceding to unlock
[+] backing up loaders, this will take a few minutes
[+] loaders successfully backed up
[+] success! powering off device, hopefully its not bricked.
11) Once device is powered down it should go into a boot loop.
12) Pull the battery and SD card. Then place battery back in.
13) Turn phone back on while holding [Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button].
14) You should enter recover mode, when you see the android guy in the top left of the screen will be some text. The third to last line should be gray and say "MODE: Developer" The following line will be blue and say "SECURE DOWNLOAD : ENABLE".
*If you do not see this repeat steps 2 - 6 again*
15) If you made it this far you are ready for PHASE 3 :fingers-crossed:
=========
PHASE 3
=========
- Rooted Boot Menu -
16) While still on the screen showing the android guy with the word "DOWNLOADING..." beneath it, connect phone to PC and open up Odin3 on PC.
17) In Odin3 look at message box on the lower left of the screen. It should have a message saying "Added!" On the top left under "ID:COM" there should be a blue box that says "[0:COM#]" (the # will be a single digit number).
18) Click on the button that says "AP" on the right.
19) Browse to and select: twrp-3.0.2-0-trltevzw.tar.md5 (yours might be different if you have a newer version) *IMPORTANT!* TRIPLE CHECK that you are choosing the right TWRP file!! If you have more then one on your PC you will mess up your phone by flashing the wrong one.
20) Select the "options" tab in Odin3
21) In the "options" tab UNCHECK "auto reboot". Make sure all other boxes are UNCHECKED EXCEPT for "F. Rest Time".
22) Click the "Start" button.
23) If successful you should see a green box that says "PASS!" in the upper left of the Odin3 user interface.
24) Disconnect the phone from the PC.
*READ THESE NEXT FEW STEPS CAREFULLY! They require some quick timing in order to not miss the window to access recovery mode*
25) While the phone still shows the green android guy (but now with a complete progress bar underneath) place phone into TWRP Recovery Mode. This is done by holding: [Power + Volume Down] simultaneously. You will have to hold it for about 5 seconds. Release the POWER BUTTON and then the VOLUME DOWN button when you see the "Maintenance Boot Mode" screen appear.
26) Using the Volume Rocker press VOLUME DOWN and highlight "Power Down : Turn off your device". Press the HOME BUTTON to select it.
27) AS SOON AS THE SCREEN GOES BLACK hold: [Power Button + Volume Up + Home Key] simultaneously. AS SOON AS YOU SEE WRITING IN THE TOP LEFT OF THE SCREEN release the POWER BUTTON and hold [Volume Up + Home Button] simultaneously.
28) You should now see the splash screen for TWRP Recovery Mode. *If it asks you if you want to go into "Read Only Mode" DO NOT SELECT IT!
29) At this point make sure your SD Card is inserted (if not it's okay to put it in while the phone is in this mode).
30) In the TWRP menu tap the "Wipe" button then "Advanced Wipe" and check "Micro SDCard". Then slide the option to wipe the SD Card.
31) After the wipe is complete press the little "Home" button in the middle of the bottom of the screen.
32) Open the back of the phone and remove the SD card.
=========
PHASE 4
=========
- Home Stretch, Installing "System Only" Firmware -
33) Back at the TWRP home screen tap "Reboot" then "Download". You will now be back on the screen with the green android guy.
34) Connect phone to computer while phone is still showing green android guy with the word "Downloading..." under it.
35) Once phone is connected to the PC open Odin3.
36) Using Odin3 click the "AP" button and select the "systemonlyN910V-5.1.1.tar" file. Then click "Start" to flash the firmware. *IMPORTANT!* TRIPLE CHECK that you are choosing the right .tar file!! If you flash the wrong one you will lose root and have to start all over again.
37) After flash is complete TWRP might ask if you want to install "Super SU" now. Say NO and let the phone reboot. (This is important! A lot of guides forget to mention that you need to NOT INSTALL Super SU this way!)
38) Now with the phone still connected to the PC open the phone up like you would a USB drive and copy over "oscar_kernel_v0.2.zip" and "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.76-20160630161323.zip" to the "PHONE" NOT THE SD CARD!
39) Reboot the phone into TWRP by holding: [Volume Up + Home Button], then select install. From there you can navigate the phones memory and click on the "kernel" zip file first to install it by swiping to install (ONLY INSTALL ONE AT A TIME). Then press the back key on the screen and install the "supersu" file.
40) Finally reboot the system.
41) Once you reboot you should see a new boot screen with an unlocked lock symbol along with a message in red on top saying: "Kernel is not SEANDROID ENFORCING" and below in yellow stating: "set warranty bit : Kernel". If you do not see this then it is a sign you might have missed a step.
42) Once booted up open the app SuperSU in the app drawer. Allow it to give the appropriate apps root permission.
43) Open Root Checker to confirm root.
************* :victory: !!CONGRATULATIONS YOU'RE ROOTED!! :victory: *************
*At this point you should reboot back into TWRP and MAKE A FULL BACK UP of the phone. Then copy the backup to your computer. In case you make any mistakes messing around with ROMs and root programs, you will always be able to come back here without having to redo this process.* I also suggest you download Titanium Backup as one of the first root apps you get. It will allow you to back up all apps and settings.

==================
Q: After rooting my WiFi isn't working.
A: Some people are having issues with the incorrect modem driver being installed during root. If you are having this problem you can flash over JUST THE MODEM DRIVER to your phone. This can be done AFTER rooting. There is no need to repeat the whole process over. This is done by connecting your phone to your PC and using ODIN to flash over the correct modem driver. For the Verizon phone the BPA1 driver is the correct one, try flashing this one first. If you have a refurbished phone it's possible you have a different modem installed. I have also included the link to all the other types of modem drivers below.
Link for BPA1 Modem Driver: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24411628330026133
Link for ALL Modem Drivers: https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...mware-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2942937
Q: I can't see my SIM card and/or can't see anything in my rooted phone's Service Menu.
A: For anyone who can't see their SIM card AND can't see anything in their rooted phone's Service Menu I found the solution for both problems after putting together tidbits from many threads here on XDA and elsewhere. The directions in the OP install mostly BPA1 Rom firmware but leave some BOG5 firmware. I updated the BOG5 modem to BPA1 modem firmware (with Odin) and the IMEI came back to the original sticker IMEI, the CSC and phone # and ability to see the SIM card returned. In the process of trying to solve this problem I found the hidden Service Menu could not be seen. After flashing the BPA1 modem the Service Menu also reappeared. Click here for post with a more detailed solution.[Answer submitted by: droidzer1]
Q: I'm stuck in a bootloop from flashing to 5.1.1 firmware and/or can't get out of bootloop by pulling the battery.
A: If stuck in bootloop go into recovery mode (*pull battery and then turn back on while holding [Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button]) and choose full to wipe cache and full factory reset (WARNING THIS WILL ERASE ALL YOUR DATA but it will save your phone. Use as LAST resort!).
Q: I'm stuck in a bootloop after installing TWRP.
A: Return back to TWRP by pulling the battery then reinserting it. Power back up the phone by holding [Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button]. When the writing appears in the upper left release the power button while still holding [Volume Up + Power Button]. This will bring you back to TWRP. At this point make sure your SD Card has been wiped (formatted to FAT32). Try removing the SD Card and reinstalling "systemonlyN910V-5.1.1.tar" with Odin3.
After you have reinstalled the firmware make sure you don't let TWRP install SuperSU automatically. You will only do this manually as stated in step 39.
Q: My phone crashed, I don't know what to do and nothing else is working.
A: Pull your battery and start phone back up holding: [Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button]. If TWRP is still on phone then go to "Reboot" then "Download". Connect your phone to the PC. Open Odin3 on the PC and flash a REGULAR STOCK firmware onto phone (links located below). This will revert it back to stock with everything it needs.
Q: After typing: "adb device" (without quotations) in the command prompt it says "offline" or nothing appears under "devices".
A:
Check that you are using newest version of adb. Older version might not work.
First make sure you are connected to the PC.
Try a different USB cable.
Try plugging into a different USB port.
Close and reopen a fresh instance of ADP then type:
Code:
adb kill-server
Then press ENTER and type:
Code:
adb start-server
Press ENTER again
Next uncheck then recheck USB Debugging which is located in Settings > Developer Mode. Finally type:
Code:
adb device
it should now be online.

You can use this guide for any version. However if Youarent currently running 5.1.1 then you will need to flash your firmware to 5.1.1 using odin3. The firmware and odin3 are included in the install file at the top of the guide. A link to video instructions on how to use odin3 and flash to 5.1.1 is at the bottom of the guide.

I had 6.0.1 too. Just download the 5.1.1 firmware (located in the included zip file or from the xda forum link in the bottom) and use odin3 to flash back to 5.1.1. Just be aware that you will lose all your data so do a back up first.
can not obtain root.
I started by downgrading to the firmware included in your package, I then systematically tried Kingoroot and Kingroot. I started with PC versions then tried apks. I have run all 4 variations of the procedure 15 times and I have yet to obtain root. any idea what could be holding me back?

For me it was the same. Then i tried it after kingoroot said it was rooted but root checker twice said no root. That worked for me.Hope they may a guide like this to go to 6.0.1 and keep root.I'm on stock 5.1.1 its a little unstable but i have root weee .Oh it took about 12 hours to get it to this point.

If you're having trouble getting temp root with kingoroot/kingoroot you can also try their PC version which attempts root through the PC via a USB cable. You can also try alternate version to the kingOroot programs by googling for alternatives. Unfortunately the temp root part of the process is the most unstable. For some reason one of those apps (whether through the PC or phone) seems to work better for some peoples phones compared to others. Another thing I realized is that if your phone starts to become hot from to many attempts it's best to remove the battery, let it cool down a litter and then try again.
Also make sure you do a full factory reset and clear all your cache BEFORE flashing to stock 5.1.1. I would try to do the factory reset, clear everything, then reflash stock 5.1.1. After that make sure you're connected to wifi and attempt the rooting methods again to see if you have better luck.
Let us know what works for you in case anyone else in the future reads this with a similar problem.
I did not begin the process with a factory reset before the firmware downgrade. I will try this and report back, it may not be until the morning though. Thank you for your work on the guide and taking the time to help me individually.
Update: your solution worked flawlessly on the first try with kingoroot. Thank you!
Now the issue I arrive at is "1|[email protected]:/data/local/tmp $ chown root.root samsung_unlock_n4-fix
chown: samsung_unlock_n4-fix: Operation not permitted"

As of now(as far as I know) there is no way to root from 6.0.1. However once you have rooted on 5.1.1 there are many custom ROMS that use 6.0.1 interface and options. Flashing different kernels and ROMS are what will open your phone up to all the possibilities.
As soon as I root a phone the first thing I do is set it up the way I like it with the stock firmware. Then I make a backup in case I need to go back and then start messing around with different ROMS and Kernels to find what I like. There is even a ROM out that turns your phone into a Note 7! I've also read you can flash the 6.0.1 firmware of the Note 4 that is made to run on different carriers like Sprint.

Oh one thing I just realized is make sure you are doing the steps correctly when you run Minimal ADP and Fastboot. The lines of code I put up in the guide that you type into the command window doesn't show the last line when you inject the "N4" file. You need to scroll down to see it. Make sure you didn't miss doing that command. Also try running Minimal ADP as an administrator by right clicking the .exe file and selecting "Run as administrator". That might help too.

For anyone who wants to try out new features beyond firmware 5.1.1. This is to be used AFTER successfully rooting.

Yeah I know, I'm sorry about that but that website is the only one I could find that would host a 4 GB file for free. If you know of another site please let me know and I'll upload it there. Also if you want me to place it in a google drive account or Dropbox that you have I'd be happy to do that too (unfortunately I don't have enough room in my own). If you'd be willing to share it with the community even better!
Alternatively almost everyone of the files can be found separately online by googling the name. Most are on the xda forum. Any that are not have a description next to it and can be found in one of the video tutorials or forums from the link at the bottom of the guide.

When you install the program "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" it will make a folder for itself where your other programs are located. You need to place the "samsung_unlock_n4-fix" file in that same folder. That is where it will look for the file and is the reason you are getting the message "No such file or directory".
At the top of the guide, under Files Needed For Root this is explained in #3. The comment says: "place this file in the install directory of "Minimal ADB and Fastboot" (Usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot.)"

I didn't know you could upgrade firmware without losing root. This will save me quite a bit of time. I'm on 5.0.1 with root and want to upgrade.
Thanks, Geno

Be aware you can only upgrade to 5.1.1 at the moment because that is a special version of the firmware. It has the boot loader removed which is why it is called "systemonlyN910V-51.1.tar". Because the boot loader is removed you still keep TWRP and root access. If you try to flash a stock version of 5.1.1 or any other firmware you would LOSE root.

[GUIDE] (Exynos) TWRP+Magisk updated guide (June 2021)

Magisk+TWRP for Exynos ONLY
Hi, there are some tutorials out here on the forum but some are outdated, others have dead links and other mix some steps from exynos and snapdragon, so this is a guide on how I did it, My device is the International Exynos LTE Dual sim variant or SM-N985F-DS running android 11 (oneUI 3.1) patch from april 2021 with security patch from may 2021 but this has been tested on many exynos variants.
See DR.Ketan post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-how-to-root-n20-ultra-n986b-n9860.4147023/
I based my guide on @dr.ketan 's guide and some bits from the comments and references from that post, so all credit goes to him and the people he reference on his post.
First of all as dr.ketan said:

- All your data on device will be lost
- Flashing custom binaries may brick (Usually soft but can be hard brick too) your device, so follow it on your own risk!

1.- BACK UP ALL OF YOUR DATA, copy your files to a PC, make backups on google and samsung clouds and any other cloud service backup you have (whatsapp for example) becuase in this process all data is wiped TWICE.
2.- Prepare your PC:
I personally recommend using a laptop or a pc with an UPS (backup battery) just to be safe.
2.1 Create a folder fo the files and create 2 folders inside named OLD and NEW (this is merely to keep files organized since they CAN be confused (see next steps), unless said otherwise ALL files and folders go in the OLD folder.
2.2 Download ODIN [CHECK FILES BELOW]
2.3 Download YOUR phone stock firmware (you have several options for this, I personally use sammobile but here you have to google on your own. Remember to extract the contents and you should have 5 files.
NOTE(hehe): to get your exact model name you can check on Settings>About phone>Software information>Baseband version.
2.4 Download Magisk APK and ZIP [CHECK FILES BELOW]
2.5 Download Multidisabler ZIP [CHECK FILES BELOW]
2.6 Download TWRP recovery [CHECK FILES BELOW] and place it in the "NEW" folder you created on step 2.1
IMPORTANT: use only THIS recovery from THIS file, since it's modified for exynos and also to skip a step on the process.
3.- Prepare your Phone:
3.1 Copy the AP file from your PC (the one from the stock firmware) and the magisk.apk file you downloaded, to your phone.
3.2 Install the magisk app (the apk file)
3.3 Open the magisk app and select the first option, there you will have an option to select a file, select the AP file you copied from your pc an tap continue (or start I dont remember)
3.4 Now you will have a "Masgisk_patched-*********.tar" file on your download folder on your phone, copy that file to your PC and place it in the "NEW" folder you created on step 2.1.
4.- Now we start the process of modifying the phone
4.1 UNLOCK BOOTLOADER: on your phone go to SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE>SOFTWARE INFORMATION and tap the "Build Number" repeatedly until you see "You are now a developer" (or something similar)
4.2 Go back to SETTINGS and now you will have at the bottom a new menu called "Developer options", enter and toggle on the OEM unlocking option, this will prompt some warnings and an assistant, follow the instructions and when you finish turn off your phone.
4.3 Press and hold the VOL+ and VOL- buttons at the same time and connect the phone to your PC WHILE HOLDING BOTH BUTTONS, this will prompt DOWNLOAD MODE on your phone and you will see 3 options, Press and hold the VOL+ button to unlock the bootloader, now your phone will reboot and wipe all of your data.
4.4 Confirm OEM Unlock is enabled: after the reboot you will get the initial setup process again (as if the phone were new) skip though all (because it will be wiped again) and repeat the process on step 4.1
Now the OEM unlock setting should be GRAYED OUT and with this your phone is ready to be modified
5.- Flashing custom binaries
5.1 Turn off the phone and put it into DOWNLOAD MODE again (see step 4.3) but this time use the first option, that is, press the VOL+ button ONCE, this will enter DOWNLOAD mode and put the phone in flashing state.
5.2 Open ODIN on your PC as administrator
5.3 On the Options tab UNTICK the "Auto Reboot" option
5.4 Click on the AP button and locate the "Masgisk_patched-*********.tar" on the "NEW" folder.
5.5 Click Start, wait until you see PASS on the top left corner
5.6 Click on the AP button again and locate the "Exynos no vbmeta recovery.tar" file on the "NEW" folder.
5.7 Click Start, wait until you see PASS on the top left corner.
5.8 THIS STEP IS CRITICAL: disconnect your phone from your PC, now READ AHEAD before doing anything.
Here you will have to do a combination of button presses to boot into recovery. Once your phone is disconnected press and hold VOL- and POWER BUTTON (side key) for approximately 7 seconds, once the phone screen goes black immediately release the VOL- button and press the VOL+ button WHILE KEEP PRESSING THE POWER BUTTON. You will see 1 or 2 warning and a glimpse of the samsung logo, keep pressing the buttons until you see the TWRP (Team Win Recovery) splash screen, at this point you can release the buttons.
5.9 now in the recovery navigate to WIPE tab > FORMAT DATA > and type yes to continue (read instructions on screen). DO NOT RESTART. go back to the starting screen and then navigate to REBOOT > REBOOT TO RECOVERY.
5.10 Your phone will reboot into recovery on its own, no need to press any buttons.
5.11 Once inside the Recovery, connect the phone to your PC, after a few seconds the phone will connect normally as if it were in the OS, now copy this files to your phone from your PC:
Magisk.zip
Multidisabler-samsung-3.1.zip
5.12 Go to INSTALL tab on your phone and select the multidisabler zip and install it (it will prompt you to swipe to install), once finished tap on WIPE CACHE/DATA.
5.13 Now do the same with magisk.zip but this time DO NOT tap the "wipe cache/data" button, instead tap on REBOOT.
6.- First Boot
NOTE: First boot takes a while but if your phone is not showing the initial setup screen in max 15 minutes something went wrong and you will have to flash back to stock firmware and start over.
6.1 Once you boot do the usual initial setup, here you can do it normally and restore your cloud backups.
6.2 When you are all set up, look for the MAGISK app, open it and follow the instructions. Your phone will reboot so make sure you are all set up BEFORE opening the app.
6.3 ALL DONE!
Hi there,
Thanks for the updated guide!
Maybe worth mentioning that when done, to get back into TWRP power down phone -> connect USB ->press & hold Power AND VOL- until black screen (7sec) -> Quickly press VOL+ with still holding Power button.
Would you know how to update firmware to latest security patches (downloaded from SamMobile for example) now phone is rooted with Magisk, with TWRP recovery and multidisabled?
Regards,
I followed all directions, and Magisk and TWRP are installed. However, I do not have root access. I have an S10e (SM-G970F, Exynos). To get root access, you have to do the bixby, volume up, and power together. I always get to TWRP. When I had only Magisk installed, I always got stock recovery. How do I get the keys correct?
Also, I understand you must have something in the USB port. I tried mostly connected to the computer, sometimes to a charger, and sometimes not at all. Nothing can get Magisk root access unless it boots me to recovery, and then I can just reboot to system (no root) or recovery (same place, still no root).

IMPORTANT: use only THIS recovery from THIS file, since it's modified for exynos and also to skip a step on the process.

Weird, it was together with all the other files, I'll re-upload it when I get home.

Only thing I can think of is you are not flashing the correct magisk zip file on TWRP, try downloading it from magisk's official site. Is the same file for the both procedures, you just have to change the file extension accordingly (.apk or .zip)

here you go
Exynos no vbmeta recovery.tar
drive.google.com
EDIT: why the f is xda deleting the file after uploading?
I tried that file. First, I could not flash with odin 2 recovery.img . I used 7-zip to archive it as .tar, and it still would not flash. I do have an SM-G970F, so it is Exynos. I am not sure of the results, but I did flash with newest twrp-3.5.2_9-5-beyond0lte.img.tar .

It was the wrong file, this is the correct one:
Exynos no vbmeta recovery.tar
drive.google.com

After flashing that, it would not boot to recovery but just to download.
Thanks! Worked for me! I have a question:
do you know how to Bypass root detection for bank app?
After I flash Exynos no vbmeta recovery.tar this is the error I get
Couldn't find grp7 symbol in main dtb
failed to permorm fixtps in overlay
ufdt overlay apply fail
UFDT DT Overlay FAIL
need kernel: could not find do normal text
vbmeta: Error verifying vbmeta image
vbmeta VERIFICATION_DISABLE bit is set
CUSTOM VBMETA
VBMETA
I cannot read everything it is so small, so there may be some typos
I found out what I did wrong. I am using SM-G970F (S10e), whereas this forum is for SM-N985F.
Great instructions, though.
Thank you. Just wish I could get root. I cannot because of the updated firmware (August 2021).
Hello, thank you for the guide it worked to root my sm-n986b !

There is just this part that I did differently.
First, to start flashing the twrp at step 5.6 I had to restart the phone in download mode because odin would be stuck at "setup connection" if i tried to flash it just after the file before.
And at step 5.8 I had to keep the phone connected to the PC otherwise it would not boot in recovery menu.
I did all the phone setup and installed "Riru" then "Universal SafetyNet Fix" magisks modules to pass the Safetynet.
I just have one question if someone can tell me if there is a way to not display the bootloader warning message when the phone is booting please.

Thanks, I was just about to post this about the safety net since I just did it yesterday to start using google pay.
I'll add it to the Post as EXTRAS along with some other things.
Also sorry to everyone for having this thread so abandoned, I used to get so much spam from XDA that I ended up blocking all emails (?
