Replacing digitizer only - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. Some time ago, my Nexus 7 fell and the digitizer broke in two parts. Screen works fine, but touch does not respond well. Some people sell a digitizer (not display, digitizer only) and I want to buy one, but I don't know how to replace it.
Any suggests?
Thank you.

Thank you! But I still don't know how to replace the digitizer...

You're probably going to have to replace the screen and the digitizer. Usually, the digitizer is "fused" to the screen. At least, that's how it's been with phones in the past as well as iPods, etc. Not sure about the Nexus 7, but I'm going to assume it's the same. So, you usually have to replace both because that's how they come.
Might want to research it more before ordering just the digitizer.

Thanks for the info, but...
You are saying that digitizer will not work, or they will be not "fused" but will work?

You want to buy where the screen and digitizer are already together (fused).
The fusing process is something that happens in a factory and if not done properly, will result in your screen not working via touch at all. Basically, your best bet is to just get glass and digitizer together where they are already fused. There are also some chemicals involved from what I remember and it's just not possible to do at home.

Okay. Thank you... Let's earn some money! Hehehe (It's so expensive...)

It is possible to replace the digitaliser you need to heat the screen and draw a piece of fine wire between the screen and the digitaliser the pros use a heat plate and gold wire but you can do it with a violin e string and a hot air gun the glue is very sticky and hard to remove

Hence, this is why I say just buy the screen with the digitizer attached already so you don't have to go through all this. I know I wouldn't want to!

All I'm saying is its possible not that its a good idea imagine trying to restick the new digitaliser with no air bubbles it would be like the screen protector from hell

No, I understand. It's possible, but for me, it's something I wouldn't want to tackle. I'd probably end up breaking something else.
When I had to replace the screen on my daughter's 2nd gen iPod, it was NOT fun. The digitizer was bad, so just replacing both was an exercise in frustration. I'd hate to imagine what I would have had to go through if I had to try and fuse the digitizer back to the original screen.

I am wondering if I could replace the screen without any troubles. Can this HD2 be fixed like new by replacing the glass screen and the digitizer?
[EDIT] The Screen was still working 1-2 weeks later, then after that the screen stopped working... So I'm thinking something is wrong with the screen digitizer but I'm not do sure.

So its a problem with the digitizer right? And then I could fix it and it will work again?
That depends upon your skill and abilities
My professional advise is either to use professional to install or to purchase LCD and digitizer in one unit, even though your LCD is fine. There is no glass screen and digitizer, there is LCD and digitizer, neither of which you will be able to install separately, given your question.
Ok thanks every one for replying!

[GUIDE][WIP][DIY] **UPDATE! VIDEO ADDED** Nexus 4 Digitizer and LCD Replacement Guide

So ive had my Nexus 4 for about 2 weeks now and i love this phone! i recently went to Dallas with my Mom and Sister over the weekend. Upon getting to the hotel, my Nexus decides to slip out of my hand onto the concrete. When i picked it up, it had a crack on the top right corner of its face. No big deal, right? Wrong! The top half of the screen is completely unresponsive. Good thing i brought my Galaxy Nexus to hold me off through the trip. Once i settled in at the hotel, I whipped out my laptop and bought a replacement screen. I ordered from this site... http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-lg-...-assembly-with-front-housing-and-battery.html
Also, Mods, please move to appropriate forum if necessary.

Judging from ifixit, it's going to be pretty hard to replace the screen. Would you mind keeping us updated on your progress here? I'm curious to see how hard it's going to be.
The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame. So don't crack the glass unless you're good with a heat gun, or you're fond of replacing the glass, display, and frame together ($$$).

Yeah, I think it might be a bit of a challenge. Please tell us how it goes though.
i think he ordered the whole glass/screen/digitizer fused together thing, which shouldnt be as hard to replace ( i hope). Anyways, please do keep us updated.
Yeah, i ordered the entire front housing, (battery, display, digitizer, and frame) for a total of $186.72... I already have my Nexus 4 disassembled. I'm just waiting for the screen which should get here Wednesday. And yes, I will update this post as i replace the screen.

I don't think its worth buying the set for $180 and then risking doing it yourself, I sent mine to lg and they're repairing it for $140 total.. Although the price may vary based on the damage..

you can get just the lcd and digitizer for 160 too, might be worth it if you dont have to ship it to LG or if it's an easy diy. There's even a b-stock lcd and digitizer for 140, the lightbleed special?
When you sent the phone to LG was it overseas or in the US? Also whats the website? thanks

i recently cracked my front display, but it still works fine. i'm looking into replacement options and i don't believe the suggested link you posted is a good choice, because the front panel + digitizer + lcd are all fuzed together and i don't have a heat gun...
http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-lg-...nd-digitizer-assembly-with-front-housing.html
this option is probably best at 120... but then i just read this on ifixit:
"The battery is stuck to the frame with a lot of adhesive, so removing it without puncturing the battery can be difficult."
so... looks like the 160 pre shipping/taxes is the best choice

just as an fyi - lg is saying their repair cost is from 40-150 dollars approx... i might just go this route since it doesn't void warranty and i won't screw anything up myself

Thanks buddy,
The same happened to me. But unfortunately i'm located in India.. Is it possible to purchase this Display assembly from India..
I'm really worried..
Hi,
I'm sorry to dig out the old thread, but i'm trying to fix my N4 of similar problem but i have a question:
Is there a way to separate the LCD from the digitizer? This way i can keep the LCD and get only the digitizer to save cost as my LCD is still working perfectly. In ebay, an OEM Digitizer+LCD assembly cost USD100+ (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Touch-D...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3cd597ce9d) but the standalone digitizer only cost about half of it (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-TOUCH-S...er_Cell_Phone_Accessories&hash=item43bf9536ff).
All the instruction that i can find so far on the internet involve replacing the entire assembly.
Battery bending under removal
I'm also sorry to have to reply to an old thread, but I am in urgent need of an answer.
I recently cracked my phone's screen. I ordered a screen+frame repair kit, and got repairing. However, when removing the battery, When prying it from the phone, I realized that the battery was soft, and my tool I was using to pry it off was actually bending it. The battery seems to be curved overall, and slightly pushed on some edges. Also, a weird "sweet" smell came from the phone. Perhaps the smell is the adhesive that sticks the battery to the phone; I do not know.
Will it be safe to use the same battery again? Or should I go ahead and purchase a new one?
Wouldn't a hair dryer work as an alternative heat gun

I wouldn't recommend doing so as a LCD+digitizer assembly cists around $60USD I did not think its worth seperating them but you can use a hairdryer to soften the adhesive

[Q] Glass on top of digitizer? Need a new one!

Hi guys my S4 was dropped and when I tried replacing the glass I found out the glass under that one is also broken, the touch worked perfectly everywhere on the screen but now I need the glass between the outer one and the digitizer. When I took it out it kind of looks tinted, sorry but that's the best description I can give. Anyone know where I can get a new one? (Im asking about the glass between the top outer one and the digitizer)
Normally you need to replace the whole digitizer and outer glass. Its one part and costs a lot to replace. I learned the hard way fixed the screen on my note twice and now I bought an s4 and never take it out of my otter defender case.

So I basically broke the digitizer along with the already broken screen and have to spend $250 for a whole new digitizer?
EDIT: I think you might be right because when I turn it on the screen doesn't work, theres a faint line of light in the left corner and the notification light (blue when turning the phone on) and the menu and back buttons work.
I cant stress how good my otter defender case is. It saved my phone so many times. They r a bit bulky and ugly but it beats fixing it too much$$$. Especially the s4 it is a weak phone.

[Q] weird lines on screen

This is a chinese s4 phone, after dropping it glass broke and screen displayed these lines as shown in pictures. What i want to ask is should i change the glass only or does it need a new digitizer? touch screen responds well, no problem there. just these lines. anyone have any clue if this can be fixed without changing the digitizer?

It's clearly that both are broken - and the digitizer is glued to the display, so you must change them both.

Since this is fake Chinese S4 it's a real miracle to find part which is for your phone and one that works. LCD and Digitizer (glass) are not laminated in your case, so replacing them should be easy.

Don't think there would be a screen from a chinese knock off, and furthermore most of those parts aren't even genuine Samsung parts.
so not worth repairing a fake phone assuming you even can. buy something half decent at a 2nd hand store. hope you looked for malware on that phone before you started using it...
The glass might be glued to the digitizer, but it can also be unglued.
Take a blow dryer, set it on hot air and blow dry the phone. The glue will heat up and become liquid again. Use a guitar pick and try to pry the glass from the screen and slowly pull it off.
I've seen this being done once (on an original S4), so yeah, I'm sure it is possible.
After the glass is off you should see if it still has those lines or not.

It is hard make they believe that. But you should have a try.
The glass, screen and frame are glued together tightly. It is a hard task to replace one part only.
Although you send it to repair store, they only help you to replace the whole display assembly for avoiding risk.
If you want to repair by yourself, I don't suggest to replace the glass only.
Separating the glass from screen, you have to keep heat gun on 80 degree. It is a very hard task for a freshman to separate the glass from screen and keep the screen prefect. It needs the professional skill and tools.
You can try to replace the S4 screen with glass and frame by yourself. It is not a hard job and will save a lot of money. BTW you must get the correct version of screen with digitizer and frame replacement part for your S4.
You can get original spare part from witrigs.com which offers repair guide.
