[Q]Should i Buy a Glaxy Tab 2?

Well I recently got a Pantech burst, hence my name. But now im looking for a tablet for personal use and school. Im also interested in the ASUS Eee pad and the nexus 7. Any tips on what to get/reasons to get the tab 2?

I have an gtab 2 10.1 and i have to say that its amazing. Its smooth, has a nice display, good music boxes for a tablet and the battery life is awesome. ( 28 h with intensive use of wifi games and some youtube vids.)
The only thing thats bad about this tablet is the camera, but i think... ITS A TABLET! NOT A CANON EOS!
A little pro for you is the support of the users here in xda

Be cautious when considering the Asus. I bought a new Transformer Prime 64GB, mainly because it seemed to be rated high and was cutting edge. It never worked right. Twice I had to send it to Texas for "repair", the first time when it was only a few days old. Asus has them locked and the unlocking app doesn't work for many, so there's no way to load CWM or a custom ROM. While just under the return window I sent mine back to Amazon for a refund and ordered the 10.1 Tab 2. It may not be cutting edge, but Samsung stuff is solid and there's a lot of support. You might also want to spend some time reading the threads here on XDA about the Asus before you decide. I wish I did. Just my two cents!

I had the 8gb nexus 7 and loved it but not enough storage for me. I have the Gtab 2 7.0 with a 32gb SD card and am very happy with my purchase. If storage isn't an issue for you I would go with the nexus 7.

as much as I like my tab 2, for most folk the 16gb nexus 7 is the better purchase.

Agreed. I've gone through a couple phases with my Tab 2 7" thus far. I was initially a bit disappointed in it as the screen and performance weren't quite as crisp as my Galaxy S2 phone. But after more day-to-day use and comparing it with the hacked Nook Color I'd been using previously it's really started to grow on me and I quite like it now, especially given the price. But if I had to buy new right now I'd probably opt for a 16GB Nexus 7. The extra space provided by an external storage card on my Tab is largely useless as far as most apps are concerned.

I got the Tab2 because it shipped with ICS, has a back camera and expandable storage. No regrets. I am not in the US so I wouldn't have been able to access all the Google services. Tab2 was a bit less ($10) than the Nexus for me.

You should search. You would see the other five threads asking the same question.

Ha good one. Like I would spend my money on an apple product. Also the nexus tablet is like Two weeks? Two days old. I doubt someone compared it to this but thanks for the negativity downer Dan!

I am very happy with my Tab 2, but in the end I think the i-pad is the better choice: many more tablet apps available.

Like scottx said buy an IPad so you can support sue happy Apple. They need more money so they can block or delay us in getting new non-apple products.
Seriously, I would do a lot of research and find local stores that have various ones on display and take some time to play with them. This is a big purchase for some of us. I kind of rushed into it and am not sure I made the best decision even though I am happy with my Tab 2. I had a Toshiba Excite 10 and it was great also with the exception that there is still not a lot of developers making apps that are compatible or support the Tegra 3 processor. And the fact that there was a glitch in the camera (which is better than the Tab 2) that caused some issues.
Good luck in you search and decision.

I'd owned iPad 2 about a year but traded it for Galaxy Tab 2 (5100) so I have experience for both devices.
iPad is absolutely unusable without JailBreak. And you can not guarantee some smart guy will make a jailbreak for new iOs version.
But it is smooth and handy and sweet and yummy. And all girls are yours (if you own Ferrari as well).
SGT2 is scarcely usable with stock Samsung rom. It's sluggish and it lives its own life and doesn't care what exactly you want to get by poking your finger into the screen. Sometimes it may make an exception and mercifully respond to your wishes. May be such an impression comes after iPad since raw android users don't experience anything like that.
Yesterday with help of comrade Endoroid I managed to flash CyanogenMod 9 to my SGT2. And you know what - it is smooth almost like iPad now but you haven't to perform all those Voodoo dance to just put a file on it. So now I have all the mighty might of android swiss knife and smoothness of near of such of Ipad.
As a summary - I would recommend you this device if you can handle flashing a custom rom and don't bother about warranty.

Got my GTab 2 since yesterday. It ran only 1 minute stock (to copy CM9 and gapps on flash) . Now I'm running CM 9 RC2 - CM10 4.1 is in progress by codeworkx. It's so smooth :fingers-crossed: ! Love it! Only thing is, that dock features like audio/hdmi over dock connector aren't supported yet.

I've read in many threads that the build quality of the Nexus 7 is not very good. Asus tried to build it so that it would be easy to tear down and replace parts, and in order to do that, they did not use any glue to hold in the screen. This may been nice for the repair department, but it sucks for the average user constantly getting a loose screen (eventually causing damage to the screen).

Hmm.. and one more thing. It looks like the screen has yet another problem with "ghosting" images.

Oh and also it seems that Tegra 3 chips have a severe "flickering" problem with the display.

There is a hardware problem that affects the flickering in the display. When the brightness level is turned down, the IPS panel is affected when the broadcom WiFi chip receives data. So, if you want to use the internet and turn down the brightness, you will get (from what other people say) severe flickering on the screen. Sounds annoying.

I got myself the galaxy tab 2 and overall well i will say for stock rom it does ok if you are doing light work (surfing,and music) although you do see the screen or tapping of screen lag when you are running more things. However overall rather stable for android os 4.0.3. i think there is an update to 4.0.4 but i guess i will stick with 4.0.3 a while longer before moving on to custom roms.

NO! Don't buy Galaxy Tab 2, I suggest you to buy an Asus Transformer Pad than Gtab 2 because some reasons:
1. It's cheaper
2. It's using NVIDIA Tegra 2 GPU (Transformer) which run graphics very smoothly than Gtab 2 which only powered by PowerVR
3. Asus Transformer's dock is very usable, your tab can transformed into a netbook
4. The dock could extend the battery of the tab up to 6-10 hours as I know
5. The widget and live wallpaper is pretty cool and awesome B)
6. Asus built in apps is very usable too
And the last...
7. It's have good specs for gaming
But I just suggest you and you've still consider which is the best for you

You should install this rom,if you like stock roms. Very nice indeed. Remove the bloatware,install some sort of app that stop apps from starting on their own, and you will see a nice improvement.

Buying a Note 10.1 ?

Hey guys,
I'm thinking of buying a Note 10.1 with the Note 2 in my pocket I find it useful and fun to use, and I perfect selecting text etc with the S-Pen.
However I've got some reservations. I've looked at one 3 times (I know WTF am I doing?) and I've been resitant on buying one as all of them are running 4.0.4 and I'll be honest I found it a bit clonky, and not as rapid as the Note 2.
Now with mention of a possible GT-N8200 which is a possible successor to the N8000 is it wise to buy one? with rumors of the Nexus 10 screen, an updated spec and possible S-Pen improvements I'd hate to buy one and the N8200 pop up 2 months later. One of my reasons for such hesitations is there £379 here in the UK and haven't really dropped in price since there introduction is this because there isn't a replacement or are they just expensive,
When there is the likes of the Tab2 for £265 and the Nexus10 £319 While neither offer the S-Pen I found all in store demonstration models on 4.0.4 are quite laggy and not responsive enough with the S-Pen detection being too slow to realistically use it for drawing I'm finding it difficult to spend more when the S-Pen doesn't seem to work in a way where i'll actually use it.
Can anyone give me a unbiased opinion on how well it works, I know this is the forum for it, but I'm hoping you guys and gals will be able to tell me how it is, as in store demonstrations don't make me want to part with the cash and buying one blind without trying the 4.1.2 up date is financial suicide imho.

so I have only had one tablet, this one and I bought it a couple days after its release. the 4.1.2 update definitely improved just about everything for me. ~10 hours per charge, another after the update, and expanded multi window. I understand your reservations about buying now and having a newer model. The display isn't good enough for some, and adequate for others look for the nexus 10 vs. note 10.1 thread, it is debated ad nauseam. perhaps is because my eyes are beginning to fail me somewhat but the screen works fine for me. keep in mind higher resolution requires more battery and cpu usage. fwiw, this note was announced Feb 2012. and took 6 more months to be released. my honest opinion, you won't see the next note 10.1 till July- August time frame. that's my gut feeling.
I find the s pen to be plenty responsive, there is a thread with art work done in the note 10.1 and I'm amazed at what people create.
Like I said I have only used this tablet and have never regretted my choice. my advice would be to peruse some of the threads reporting problems, but honestly there don't seem to be as many of those threads as opposed to some devices.
don't trust the store displays, watch some you tube videos, I always have power saving on and it never slows down.

Please don't trust a unit in the store! When I went to worst buy to play with 1 the screen was covered in jelly lol. I love mine & could care less about retina displays. Whenn they come out with the note 10.1 2 I will buy it but until then I'm happy with my purchase. There will always something else newer coming out when you buy a tablet. Hell I bought the galaxy note 2 & now they already talking about the galaxy note 3

Thank you for taking the time to give me an idea what the Note is like.
I will go get one based on this new information, I really wish stores would update the devices they sell as Jellybean seems to have transformed the Note by what I can see, meanwhile the general public see them and obviously prefer the iPad, is it any wonder when some of the Android devices are running so badly.

Even on ICS I was impressed at what this baby could do compared to my old transformer prime. Jellybean has turned this baby into a multitasking beast! Thank god I didn't get the Microsoft surface. Lastly the speakers on the front of the tablet is something I've been hoping a company would do forever. There's nothing worse than having to cup your hands at the back of your tablet to get the sound to fire in your direction

EDIT: as far as becoming obsolete soon, Verizon just began selling these on this side of the pond, Sprint as well I believe. and the 8 inch version hasn't even been released yet. read into that how you desire. enjoy!

I love my 10.1. I did however buy a different stylus (the Wacom Bamboo feel) because writing with the original stylus can be a little awkward due to its size and shape (for me, anyway). But for school, it's been a great alternative to carrying around multiple notebooks, and I can use my Note II hotspot to easily connect to the internet when not near a router.

I think the note 10 is the most underrated tab around, I had the original n7000 and this is considerably quicker, I even like the touch wiz implementation (mostly) on it, something I never thought I'd say...
It also made me realise I didnt really need a phone with an spen, as I used this one 100x more than the note one.
Use it for drawing all the time would like a higher res screen though.
They have been reduced btw, argos were selling them cheaper, and Samsung were doing a rebate on top of that for uk purchases.

Not sure when I'm down in London next, other wise I'd say you're welcome to try mine out,

It looks as if that Wacom stylus has a button, if so, does it behave the same as the stock s-pen?

I highly pecommend this tablet.
It is very fast, Well built and can be used in an office as well as in the field.

Own two of em for about 4 months and just bought 1 more. finest tablets of my collection. They hold there price and with 2 gigs of ram, pretty sweet device. I own several 10inch tabs and this is the best. Running stock no root and zero problems.

Quite outdated. Wait for the announcement in June. It is already June anyway

A reasonable assumption is that the next generation will be an incremental upgrade, faster processor, more pixels in camera and screen, question you need to answer is that something you NEED or is it something you WANT? I use mine for note taking, surfing and some posting on fora. So in my case those improvements won't really matter, my choke point is the connection to the net, hence the truth is that while I might want those improvements I don't really need them.

I bought this one just a week back .I waited till google I/O to find if the announce a new Nexus 7 - as I wanted a rear camera.Then note 10.1 was the choice ,although more expensive than nexus 7 3G (I paid ~ $465 in Dubai), Its worth.It is with future proof spec .A full HD screen would have been a plus point , But most apps / videos are at HD level (720P) , So I don't see much difference.:good:

I doubt that anyone NEED a phone or a tablet to survive.
However I am looking forward to upgrades such as
- Higher resolution screen. Don't give a dam about retina or apple, but my note 2 has the same resolution as my note 10.1. and it just feels blurry on my tablet relatively. Inking with lecturenotes and ezpdfreader don't seem to have smooth edges.
- Can someone please explain why it takes an hour to transfer a 200MB video via bluetooth?
- Occasional choppiness and lag compare to note 2. A faster CPU should help.
- Out of RAM (Don't know why, but 2Gb isn't enough for me)
- Laughable camera
- I think having NFC will be cool, especially for simple stuff like bumping to transfer a photo. I like the Sony idea of pairing with portable speakers too.
- Further reduce weight? Prefer as light as possible as I commute with it every weekday. (well unlikely that Sammy cares)
- Better S Pen API and developer support. Most third party apps with digitizer are honestly disappointing .
- FIX S Note. Stop crashing. Stop sync erroring. Stop locking up half of my notes for no reason. Stop losing my notes. Stop zooming with the touch of my palm even though I selected pen input only. Stop changing to default background when I add a new page. Stop all sorts of irritating garbage that forced me to use lecture notes.
- Multitasking works now and is less buggy. But demanding applications do significantly slow down and become less responsive. like officesuite. Faster CPU should help

Find it fine, as was stated before you need to eventually bite the bullet and get something or you'll be chasing the bigger better tablet forever....
In this day and age 6 months is obsolete, if not faster, so waiting for a new thing to come out, then waiting so its not too expensive means that you will never get that tablet you want/need because there's always better on the horizon...
What's the saying, give them bread today and they're happy today but promise them cake tomorrow and they'll go for another day...

Let's talk about the price, the Note 10.1 3G I have found is about 500$, what do you think would be the price of a future Note is it's first weeks?

I see it as improvement every year, which is a good thing for the customer. Rumours suggest the successor of 10.1 will be announced in June. So chances are people are patient enough. Of course it is your right to buy it now and feel obsolete within a month. Usually I am happy to wait between 1-3 months. More than that I will just buy it now. No regrets and no hard feelings.

Widgets accumulate quite a lot. Live Wallpaper. Kaspersky is another ram hogger. Launch a few intensive apps and try multitasking, there goes my 2 gb ram. Why do you seem so surprise when one game on Google Play from Gameloft could be 3 Gb in total size and take proportionally significant RAM?

I think that is the price point Sammy gona stick with. That is, sell the new 10.1 for 500 dollars (if that's the price for ur country) and bump the old note price down

haha, indeed. 2GB is more than enough. Sounds like that Note 10.1 has some problems, because I don't recall any lag nor crashing on my device. S note works very well and camera is also usable, much better than Note 8.0, which is weird.

Forget $500 now, what was the price back in August last year? That's what the price will be for the new Note.... I paid $800 for a 32gb N8000... Was the best price around. I don't know what the price for it would be now as the ONLY versions left seem to be the 16gb N8000.. They're around the $500 mark but were $650 when 1st released....
Wifi only different prices again....

It is outdated but still a better tablet than many others on the market. The main thing is a low res screen but given that cpus at the time could not support 1080p properly , 720p screen was the right decision.
Another thing I find is that 16gb internal memory is not enough (and I believe there were no other options at the time of release)
Cant wait to upgrade though.

Following samsung 's pattern though, the 16gb will be released and the 32gb will be released about 1 - 2 months later... 64gb is a myth....
What these manufacturer's need to understand is that because of the extras they throw in, the OS is using more and more space. My SGS3 used up 5gb for the system os but the SGS4 is now using 7gb... I know its only 3gb more but when memory is an issue that is huge....

Who knows what will be introduced (not released) in June. If there is a tablet, everything I've hear says that it will be a Tab 3 10.1, basically with a slightly faster CPU than the Note 10.1 but with a slightly lesser camera and the same resolution. Hold me back. While I'm lukewarm about the resolution on the Note 10.1, and its camera pretty much sucks out loud (what Sammy tab cameras don't?), it's still a great tab and not at all "outdated."

Yes why can't they put better cameras on tabs. Anyhow, I find Note 10.1 camera fairly usable in good light and for Skyping no problem. But in the new Note 8.0 is much worse...

I bought the note 10.1 and a week later returned it. On a stock Rom and custom one I felt the performance to be sub par especially when compared to an iPad. Scrolling through apps was often choppy and I felt like for the premium cost it should be smoother plus a lot of the apps I used aren't optimized for tablets. So I'm waiting to see what's going to be released in June but in the meantime I'm seriously considering the Surface RT

lol. there is nothing choppy on 4.1.2 . smooth as butter and nowhere behind ipad, surface or any other tablet. screen resolution is subpar but you have an active stylus.
best tablet ever for productivity !
maybe the new windwos tablets are going to be better since they support active pens and you can use onenote, mathlab and other important apps. however these windows tablets cost twice the amount of money in comparison to a note 10.1

Yeah dude I dunno, I'm a fan of Android for sure. I got a Note 2 and love it, and I thought I would love the 10.1 but compared to the experience I get on the phone and what I get on the iPad (3rd gen) the note 10.1 was choppy even with 4.1.2.
I even rooted it installed a rom and it still felt choppy even within native apps like the calendar. I choose it over other tablets because of the S-Pen but honestly as much as I think I would use it, I never do.
So now I think I would value the Microsoft office suite and a desktop class internet browser found in the surface over an android tablet, especially when android system updates rarely happen and most android apps are not optimized for larger screens.

Galaxy Note 2 and now 8.0 overkill?

I've been looking at tablets for the past month as I'm taking college courses (yes I'm 40 but close to being done) thus fall. Like all over you I feel I've owned almost every tablet other than the Windows platforms.
My desires were nice screen, note taking ability, nice sound, expandability, and some longevity.
My favorite of the ipads androids was the Galaxy Note 10.1. The wacom stylus and speed were super. I got rid of it because it felt a little big and I would forget it when I needed it.
I thought hard about the Surface especially with the price cut, but I have an i5 laptop so it seemed redundant. The new Nexus sure has a great speed camera and sound. But no expandability and not feasible to take notes. But it would do nothing more than be an entertainment device and I own a Galaxy Note 2 that does that pretty well.
So last night after weeks of reviews and pluses and minuses I found a GN 8.0 for 300.00 with free ship and brand new in box. I just jumped on impulse and bought it.
My issues with the 10.1 was it was large and a fuzzy screen. So I am thinking the GN 8.0 the screen should be less fuzzy as less real estate but big enough to take notes and hopefully small enough to remember.
Then this morning I woke up and realized I just spent 300.00 on a 3 inch bigger Note.
The deal itself is a good one. The question is after this long story is Have I over killed the Note by getting just a little bit bigger???

I think the Note 2 and 8.0 compliment each other nicely. I currently use both, and despite what some think about the "phablet," it's definitely a phone. Reading, web browsing, video watching, and many other experiences are much better on a larger display. You made a great choice IMO.

I sold my note 2 and ipad 4 and replaced them both with the note 8 n5100 with sim, so far im very pleased the note 8 does everything, ive got a 64gb sd card, my vodaphone sim so i can surf text and take calls everywhere on just one device, without tethering or messing about, i swapped to the note 8 as one device as a test, but even with some great phablets due out at the end of this year surrendering my note 8 for a smaller faster phablet will still be a hard to do.
My previous favourite was also the note 10.1, but i now prefer my note 8!

I believe as long as you do some mods to the note 8.0 its worth keeping. First change the layout to tablet not the phablet form it comes with. Then a nice change of launcher and I believe its very useful. Synch them both up to each other and you have a useable note taking tablet with lots of memory. I have imported 4 school books into Snote and works very well. The screen is a good enough size to do reading and the note taking is much better on the 8 then it ever was on the note 2. I use note 2 to take down numbers and little hints but as a study instrument the note 8.0 is only choice is you need stylus.

Changing mode to tablet mode? Is thus a setting or a mod which you need to be rooted?
A lot to catch up once I get the tablet.

Most apps see the note 8 as a tablet, but if you get apex launcher it has a setting to turn the launcher into a tablet layout

You change the dpi in the build.prop to 160 (and below) and that kicks the tablet UI into play.

Totally agree. Lol, and I did the same as the OP, bought my note 8 on a whim because I found a good deal, then wondered if I had made a mistake 2 hours later. I can say I don't regret my purchase one bit. For me the note 2 is a PERFECT phone. Great performance, great battery life, and what I now consider to be an ideal size screen for a phone. That being said, I find the note 2 useless for taking any kind of notes. The only time I use the spen is for annotating the odd photo. I just find it a little too small (especially for a lefty) to be as quick or efficient as a pen and paper. When I tried a bit of note taking on the note 8, it was a night and day difference. As far as the screen, it won't make you say "wow" like an htc one , but you probably won't be disappointed with it either. I would describe it as perfectly acceptable. I don't think you'll regret your purchase.

Note 8 and note 2
I have both and am very happy with them. I use the note 8 to take notes at lectures and my note 2 for calls and entertainment.

Thanks to all. After thinking it to death and obsessing finally some common sense crept in. I love my Note 2 and use it all the time but mainly for texting and looking at fb and YouTube. I may use the stylus once a month but wouldn't trade my phone. I have a 64gb sandisk with tons of movies yet never watch them. Oooh. I love taking pictures with this phone. So easy and good quality.
I am so thinking the movies ebooks and stylus use will increase with the Note 8.0.
Thanks for talking me off the ledge a bit. The one thing that resonated from people here and other threads is the nexus 7 is solid but almost too small while the 8.0 was bigger but not 10.1 or notebook big. That's kind of what went through my mind when I made the purchase.

I was on the wall for 20 days thinking should i buy the note 8 when i have the note 2....lol... At last got it. .... But I would have loved only wifi model... It would have been cheaper, here in India you only get the 3g+wifi model... still, no regrets

That's quite weird, coz the 3G+ Wi-Fi model seems to be as rare as hens teeth here in the UK, at least it was when I got mine a couple of weeks ago, the one I have now was imported from India.

I have an OG Note and the Note 8, and I can safely say it's not overkill. I love both, and there is some overlap, but for the most part, I use the devices very differently.

I have both the Note II and 8. The Note II has always been handy in my daily commute, and the Note 8 when you sit to do a bit of work or at home.
At times needed, I connect the II onto a projector, and with RemoDroid mirror-cast whatever I have on my Note 8's screen. It's great for presentations and drawing demonstrations. There's a bit of stutter, but it works.
Android is so much better than the competition.

Well you can either change the DPI or tablet or just download the app note 8 mode switcher and use that its pretty simple and straight forward its In The boards I think under apps and themes.

I've got a 6 inch phone too but I use the note 8 more. When on wifi I use it as my phone as well to make calls and text. I don't mind having both. My son is happy because he can hog my phone now though. If you're wondering I imported a pantech Vega 6 from Korea.

guys..i noted that my note 8 does not get charged with my note 2 charger though it works the other way around...i get an X on the battery symbol and the battery in settings shows discharging status..

Check the current rating on the chargers, though it's interesting that your note 2 charger is different from your note 8 charger. The ones packaged with my devices were both identical 2a Samsung units.

I'm thinking about it.
This is the 1st Samsung tablet that I've been interested in in quite some time. The glossy plastic finish, relatively low resolution and the high price kept me from even considering the previous Note 10.1. The 2014 Note 10.1 has already addressed 2 out of 3 of those negatives. Price is the last detail I'd need before taking the Note 10.1 2014 seriously.

Let me make my home here, I'll be getting this. Looking for the 64GB version.

Definately getting it, just not sure which version to get. 4G is no big deal to me, so it will all come to CPU/GPU performance between the two versions.

I bought mine back in March and it's the 2nd most expensive gadget that I own... I can't justify buying a new one at the moment. Not a huge fan of the new aesthetics, though; the home button ruins the flush design they had going, and they should have left the front-facing speakers! But the 2014 version's hardware specs are sooo much better, gahhhh! Glad to see that Sammy is also coming out with a 64GB version with expandable memory.
I'll wait one more year or so and see what happens, especially now that Wacom is coming out with their own (highly overpriced) tablets to compete.

The new cpu and gpu is impressive and the screen resolution improved but i just bought my note from about 6 moths and it is expensive and it is performing well ... I may change my note with nexus 10 and may not and i want to know how the new nexus would look like and its specs , only one situation 100% i would change my note which is if it not get updated to 4.3 + the new note 10.1 design i dont like it only its leather back and its sides

Although I really like the new specs and goodies, I just can't get over the home button. And, if our notes get the software and s-pen oriented improvements via updates, then I'll happily keep mine.

It really boils down to price for me. If they don't make the price too high then I will get this, otherwise I'm going with the new nexus 10.

Definitely getting it! The only complain that I had with the current version is the screen resolution (especially if you zoom in to any S-Note files), and the new screen will be perfect for notes, drawing, etc. The new design looks a lot better than the current one (I don't mind the home button and losing speakers to the sides - at least they are not at the bottom or in the back). This definitely looks more refined.

Yes hope they actually relese the 64 gig version this time, the custom sketchbook pro app and screen res make it great for art hard to beat that.

I'm leaning toward getting this.. looking to replace my Asus TF201. I like the specs on the Samsung.. but I'm not pulling the trigger until I can play with one and see how I like the feel of it and its screen, audio volume, etc.,..

Im getting it as soon as I can find a 3g 32GB model. Hope they release all sizes/variants together. I always wanted the 3g 32GB version of this note, but never found it in stock anywhere...
