AT&T S4 on Tmobile - Custom Rom? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello,
I have an AT&T S4 that I want to run on Tmobile. It was running Android 4.3/MF3 baseband so I was able to install safestrap and root it. I am running the stock rooted ROM (with SIM unlock via region lock away) and the QCN file update to get 4G LTE/HSPA and 3G.
I would like to install a custom ROM but each time I do I get a bootloop. I am installing via safestrap in a slot I created NOT the stock rom slot. But as I said each time I try to boot I get a boot loop and have to return to the stock rooted rom via the stock rom slot. I got wicked rom to load but Wifi didn't work.
Am I able to install tmobile ROMS on this device (I want to be able to tether)? How do I do that? Which kernel do I use, the ATT or tmobile kernel? Do I install the ROM in the stock slot or the safestrap virtual slot?
I don't want to wind up with a device I cannot use on tmobile. Also, my computer does not see the S4 any longer. It sees my Note 3 fine but when I plug in the S4 it doesn't show as a device.

Which custom rom were you attempting to install? Was it a 4.2.2 touchwiz rom?

I'm running 4.3 so does that mean I can only run 4.3 ROMS in the virtual slot?
My baseband ends with MF3 and my build number ends in MK2. What are my opitons?

If your build number is MK2, you're on 4.3. You need Safestrap 3.71, and you can only run other 4.3 Touchwiz ROMs. Kernel doesn't matter because Safestrap does not flash kernels. You should be fine flashing any TMobile 4.3 TW ROM.

You can flash ROMs from any variant, they just may not work as well and you have to make sure you flash a kernel that matches your phone afterwards (Tmobile rom, but kernel from AT&T section)

But right now I have a T-Mobile kernel and it runs fine. When I flash an att kernel my MMS stops working.

[Q] S4 / can I downgrade?

I have a S4 on MK2 on AT&T
The fact that I am stuck on TW is depressing. And to top things off AT&T has disabled WIFI tethering, which I was using occasionally.
Is it possible to ODIN back to stock and the firmware the phone came with a year ago?
Is it correct that the originally firmware would allow me to flash Cyanogen / Task etc?
What firmware do I need to get? I understand MF3 is also bad?
You cannot downgrade.

As stated above, you can't downgrade. You can enable tethering by the thread in the general section and use Safestrap to change to other TW ROMs like Foxhound which has AOSP theming.

You could only downgrade from 4.3 if you were using the leaked 4.3 ROM with the MJB bootloader. The official OTA 4.3 updates cannot be downgraded as Samsung blew a "qfuse" with this major (4.3) update preventing reversion of the bootloader.
However, you can change or downgrade the actual ROM filesystem, provided that you keep your MK2 boot loader in place. That means that you can't revert to a pre 4.3 stock ROM but you can use custom ROMs that are 99% stock while restoring the functionality that you'd like to restore.

[Q] Q.vzw rom on sprint GS4

As I know both variants of Verizon and Sprint Galaxy S4 are the same.
Can I flash stock VZW GS4 ROM onto Sprint GS4?
You can flash any ROM that is for Verizon. But be sure you back up your APNs (if you don't know how to do that search your answer is out there). And have the correct spornt kernel. If its a TW 4.4.2 ROM download the corresponding kernel. Its its 4.3 TW then download that one. Etc.
You wipe data, install ROM, wide data again then install sprint kernel and reboot.

Sorry I misunderstood your main question. Tars I am not sure of.
Why would you want to Odin a Verizon 4.3 tar when we have 4.3 and 4.4.2 tars?

vzw gs4 accept foreign SIM and RUIM even mk2 update, but sprint is locked and cannot unlock on mk2, must be mdc or mdl baseband and impossible to downgrade.and I just think this could solve the problem!!!

[Q] How do we install a custom recovery now that we are running stock 4.4.2 (rooted)?

I am running a T-Mobile variant (D801)

KK and custom recoveries are not compatible just yet. At least for the ATT versions, you have to go back to a previous JB version, root, and then add KK. But custom recovery is lost in that process.
That is where we stand at the moment. At least for ATT.
There is a method in the T-Mobile subforum that will give you what you want. You will have to revert to 4.2.2 first

Thanks for the information. I want to wait then if I have to go through all that. I wonder when they will come out with a compatible custom recovery
With at&t the only way to have custom recovery with kit Kat is to go down to 10d(First version of 4.2.2 on it) root and then install Gary's modified kit Kat which is a mix and match of 10d and 20c which will be the same thing that will be with other models just have to wait for a)kernel source(each model has a different kernel so they have to be built with the specific kernel for it) and b)for someone to build the Rom(yes many can do it but it's better if they phone model to test on)
Edit:here is thread for you to get it in d801

No lollipop will work until it's released officially for the ATT S4. Then safestrap will needed updated to work. Then you'll have a custom ROM with lollipop.

What about a port from the 9505? I know I cannot get the official Lollipop, but something that looks similar.

No. There doesn't exist a lollipop tw kernel that will work with your bootloader.

There are GPE lollipop ROMs for the s4 (I'm using both) but they won't work on safestrap.

So far the closest thing I can find to Lollipop is Goldfinger 9.0. It is a pretty nice ROM and WiFi works as well!

Custom ROM

Please friends am very new here and I want to flash a custom ROM but don't know which rom to go for, I rooted my phone with kingroot, I don't know whether flashing CWM/TWRP recovery will be safe, my device is Galaxy s4 att baseband UCUFNJ5 am stocked at 4.4.4 KitKat Android stock rom and am tired of it.
Please friends guide me on what to do, I am tired of KitKat and am not receiving OTA update from att
The phone has a locked bootloader. TWRP/CWM/Philz cannot be flashed to the phone. Don't try because you may hard brick the phone. Safestrap is used for the ATT s4.
No custom ROM can be installed unless the ROM is based on a stock Samsung ROM.
The phone cannot receive an OTA update to 5.01 because the phone is rooted.

Did you have an AT&T sim in the phone? I'm not sure but you may need an ATT sim in the phone and connected to at least wifi before OTA updates would work.
You'd have to update the bootloader and modem to work with custom stock-based LP ROMs. I recommend looking here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
