I have a factory cable can i go into fastboot and restore the kindle fire HDX 8.9 to the old system and root it?
It is more complicated than that. You cannot restore the whole system, because the system.img is too large to be flashed in fastboot. Keep the cable handy, I think I've found a possible root method, and you'll need the cable.

Hey XDA
Iv had my Nexus 7 for a day now and am dying to root and mabe install CM10
i currently have a Samsung Galaxy S3 with CM10 on it...thot its extremly buggy sadly... anyways i have been looking up on how to root the nexus 7 but i need to know if i can instead of using toolkit can i instead just use odin to flash stock rom and cwm and so on instead of having to unlock the device?
i am used to using odin for flashing and cwm but here the nexus is close to the same with htc one x in the way it has that fastboot thing and from what iv heard the nexus 7 requires unlock before it can be rooted, also is the tookit the best way to unlock and root the device?
also does unlocking break the warrenty and if i ever decide to return to stock unroot how do i flash stock rom back onto the device? am not sure where i would find the stock roms for it and also can odin be used to flash it...:S
i hate sounding like a noob lol
ok iv used the toolkit 2.0 and its worked great so far...im stuck at not being able to boot into cwm recovery
it installed fine thru the toolkit but whenever i try to hold up and power i cant get it to boot into cwm recovery...
i tryed to reinstall again but still cant get it to boot into cwm am i doing something wrong?
Doing the following won't cause you to loose warranty:
- Unlocking the bootloader
- Rooting
- Flashing custom ROM's and Kernels (however, if you flash a custom kernel that causes your device to explode... I'm somewhat certain this won't be covered)
However, if you are doing anything like that, and have to send the device in for warranty, you "should" factory restore it. Google provides Factory Images for the Nexus 7, which can be restored to your device with semi-ease.
I use this guide to factory restore: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ne...ide-factory-image-restore-your-nexus-7-a.html Some filenames might need changed though since I think that guide is based off an older factory image (instructions are the same though).
There is a good chance a toolkit also has an easy method for factory restoring, but I don't recommend this at all.
Stop using toolkits.

I've never used a toolkit before (until this issue had me stuck). I'm unable to get the Nexus 7 to book into recovery (CWM) after flashing it via fastboot. After giving up, I rooted it using the toolkit.. scariest thing I've ever done.. it did work.. but I'd like to get to the bottom of why a number of people like me seem to be having issues flashing and booting CWM on the Nexus 7.
Did you rename the original system/recovery to .bak first?

No, I flashed it as I normally do.. using the .img file. In this case, CWM.. recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.0-grouper.img
Why would renaming it to .bak be needed?

I had to rename the stock recovery under system to .bak before I could get twrp to work. Or else when I went into recovery it would get stuck on the android.
But I see you are using fast boot it should write over it.

I didn't have to. Flashed twrp and forgot to put a ROM on it and went back into recovery and it was twrp still.

I should of just flashed the image file and flashed it myself but I was in a hurry and used goo im and it bit me in the ass. Lesson learned.
Right just a quick question if I root my nexus 7 just to use stick mount and a OTG cable and add removal. Will I still get the OTA updates from the big G.
I'm a compulsive ROM changer and I have never owed a full Nexus device and would just like to keep it pure Nexus so to speak but with Root.
Sent from Galaxy SIII using Tapatalk
Yes.
Yes, you'll still get OTA updates, but you'll lose root (I know 'cause my old Galaxy tab lost it when it got ICS), so if you want to keep root, use the Root Keeper app in the Play Store. I thing there are ways or apps that do this too, but I don't know.
You will get them but they wont update your nexus 7 because of a custom recovery

Ignore last poster.
You can still get your ota if you keep the stock recovery
You can still use a custom recovery for gaining root by doing fastboot boot recovery.img instead of fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Doing it this way will give you a single boot into custom recovery while Leaving the actual recovery on your tab stock

That's not true. You can root and still have stock recovery. In fact you'll have stock recovery unless you flash one manually. edit: or unless your root tool flashes the recovery.
And to the OP, yes, you sure can have root, and still have updates [but apparently not upgrades], I recommend that over unrooted stock, but I would definitely recommend a custom rom like Paranoid Android [CM10 based]. It lets you choose the layout [tablet and phablet] of any app.
Yes, you will keep root if here is an upgrade. You might not keep it going from 4.1 to 4.2 on the OTA because like then other guy said, he lost root after a big update. If you go from 4.1 to 4.1.1 you should be fine.

OK let me give you the full breakdown which should hopefully make things easier to understand for everyone
[RECOVERIES AND OTA UPDATES]
in order to flash a manufacturer OTA update you must have the stock recovery on your devices Recovery Partition
you can still use a custom recovery via fastboot boot recovery.img as this doesnt touch your physical recovery partition
by doing fastboot boot clockworkrecovery.img you can then install your su binaries to get root
[OTA UPDATES AND KEEPING ROOT]
there are 2 different types of OTA updates
Incremental and Full System Updates
[INCREMENTAL UPDATES]
an incremental update will just update files on your system partition, as a stock rom doesnt have SU binaries, a incremental update will never
touch them and thus root will not be affected
[Full System Updates]
a full system update will erase and flash a completely new system partition, as such all data on the system partition is replaced including SU binaries so with this type of update Root will be lost
even after a full system update it is easy enough to just fastboot boot clockworkrecovery.img and reflash the su binaries again afterwards so nothing is ever truly lost
hope this is slightly educational for some of you
I just updated and lost root permission.i tried to re-root it using nexus 7 toolkit 3.2.0and failed.now i can't get any usb connection, how can i root it?

thats really weird, make sure you have usb debugging enabled. ive updated to 4.2 but i couldnt re-root using toolkit either but it recognized the usb.
I think I see the common problem here.
Toolkits.
Why are you people using them on the N7? Everything is supported straight from Google.
fastboot oem unlock
fasboot flash recovery recovery.img
Go in to CWM, flash the SuperSU file.
There is no reason to do it any other way.
OP, put your phone in to fastboot mode, plug it in and do a "fastboot devices".
Does your device show in the output?
Either from the bootloader or from the Nexus 7 Toolkit, this stupid thing won't boot to recovery. I flashed from CM10.1 to cm10 after wiping cache and dalvik...now I cannot get to recovery. System boots after going back to stock and even after the CWM flash, but recovery seems to be non-existent. Using the toolkit mentioned I flashed CWM, and I cannot boot to this.
Does adb reboot recovery work
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2
Try downloading ROM Manager from the play store. It will install recovery CMW for you and then you can boot to it. If you are trying to boot directory to recovery using the key press it will not work unless you have the tab plugged into a computer.. the N7 is funny that way.

Have you tried upgrading the bootloader to 4.31? That fixed my problem.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I've already done the upgrade to Android 4.2 when I was on stock. CWM I had from the Nexus 7 Toolkit. Even when I boot to custom recovery via that it just skips over it. When I had CWM installed I could boot to recovery via the reboot menu though so I dunno what the issue is.

What version of CWM did you flash? Perhaps try downloading CWM 6.0.1.9 and flashing it via fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.9-grouper.img
I don't think I need to do all that. Do I need to re-lock the bootloader, flash stock, unlock and flash CWM again or something? Trying to figure out why this device is such a pain in the ass. Even from the bootloader I can't boot to recovery after flashing it!!!

So how do I do this? My bootloader is version 3.34.
Pretty sure I bricked it. Just says booting failed. Friggin overmarketed P.O.S.
Anyone want to buy this?

Dang man calm down before you stroke out. Unless you did something seriously stupid it's not bricked.
And your ROM/flashing problems have nothing to do with the device itself.
Instead of rants, more details would help get you better answers.

It's booting now. Somehow flashing the stock ROM while locked soft bricks it.
So back to the drawing board, how do I get CWM back on here? This whole "adb push fastboot" yaddayadda is Greek to me.

Hi I have just bought my Nexus 4 and was thinking of flashing the factory release. If anyone could point me in the direction of a Nexus n00b guide I would be grateful.
I have rooted and flashed ROMs on my previous android phones but only using Odin to root and then flashing ROMs from the custom recovery and ext SD card. I assume that the Nexus has a different method of flashing files.
Thanks in advance.

With Nexus devices you use fastboot to flash factory images.
Use the guide link in my signature or this one from Android Central which is really good.
Also download the Minimal ADB/Fastboot and Universal Naked Driver packages. Make sure to connect your Nexus while in USB Debugging and get the driver installed correctly first. If you are using Windows 8 you need to reboot in Advanced startup mode and disable driver signature before installing.
Flashing stock images guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Rooting guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179
Also there are a lot of toolkits in original dev section to help you but I won't recommend it as I believe you need to first know how to use ADB. Lastly, if you would just search before making a thread like this...it would be great.

I had never flashed my phone before; never even rooted it but flashing 4.4 wasn't that hard once I got the drivers figured out and the SDK manager installed I used these commands:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-mako-makoz20i.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-mako-m9615a-cefwmazm-2.0.1700.84.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot -w update image-occam-krt16o.zip
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Good luck!

Man simply root your phone and flash a stock kitkat rom.... All of 10 minutes, some people have been having bootloops with images and since your a novice that would be your best bet to getting kit kat. Not that images are bad or the wrong way to go but too me a person like you its easier and better off rooting and flashing stock.
Bootloader and radio not necessary unless you want too
Thanks to all. Got round to flashing the factory image yesterday after reading the links. All went OK noe running kitkat and nova beta launcher.
