[Q] I have a dilemma:

I'm trying to root my Continuum, but I'm having a ridiculous amount of trouble.
I'm new to the android scene, and this is my first smartphone.
I was researching how to root it, and I decided I want to flash CMW on it.
I was using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1057072 for help, as well as http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-samsung-continuum/
I downloaded Odin, PDA'd the tar.md5 recovery, flashed it, and then put the update-i400.zip on my sdcard. I restarted my phone in recovery mode, and I was trying to install the update-i400.zip, and it won't let me. I've done both the tar.md5 and adryn's test4.tar, as well as renaming the .zip just 'update'
I'm lost, and need some help, please. I would've posted this in the development section, but being a noob, it won't let me. If anyone can help, that'd just be great.

Are you rooted? You have to have root access before you can do that stuff I believe, I could be wrong though.

bye the way you can check if you are rooted using terminal emulator from the android market

yes super one click worked for me select universal mode then rage against the cage and then hit root it might hang for a minute but it should reboot then check to see if theres an app called super user. once you see that your rooted.

I used SOC and after phone rebooted no SU app so did again (as per instr. on xda) rebooted and SU installed. Also for CwM Ive had best luck using odin3 1.3, adryns test4 tar, cwm 2.5 update zip, but I still had to use menu softkey to apply zip. Right now I can use rom manager app to boot into cwm, it says 2.5.1 but it has red text?

You can flash the Odin ROM without root. That will root and install the proper kernel for you... then use CWM to flash whatever ROM you want to use.

Or you can flash the complete odin package for 2.2 thats on the Continuum Development section.
Which will also make your device rooted

You don't want to rename the rom zip. You have to use the Cyan CWM update.zip, which is here: http://www.4shared.com/file/cLdwKNsU/update.html
I don't know if the other links posted are for the same file, but that's the one that works with Froyo.
You must have the cwm update.zip on your flash card. When you start up in recovery, you'll need to select apply update.zip. Use the volume rocker to highlight update.zip, and tap the menu soft-key to select. Once in CWM, the power button is select, and the back soft-key is back. You'll want to select the menu option to install zip from sd card, select zip to install, and browse to where you saved the rom file.
If all else fails, I'll be uploading a super-clean debinged ROM in the next few days. Once it's up, just flash via Odin as you did with adrynalyn's cwm recovery image.

[Q] gs4 losses root.

Hello.
Im looking to get some help with an issue i have on my gs4 att, stock + root.
My device keeps loosing root access after a while.
I have unrooted and flashed stock 4 times, but i cant figure out the problem and cant find any information on the fourms.

What version stock?

Here I did it before and I never got a message says root access has been lost.
1. Odin it back
2. Root by using causal method
3. When phone reboot itself into recovery TWRP
4. Don't back up just reboot into welcome screen
5. It should ask you to install superuser, just install it
6. Finally, reboot into recovery and make nandroid back up.
On step four, I back up by using nandroid before superuser install. When I change rom, message always telling me I have lost root access quite often this way.

thats usually what i do, i tried 4 times. It doesnt ask me to install su, its already installed.
i might just have to update and wait for new root method.

Download a superuser/supersu zip file and flash it through your twrp/cwm recovery and reboot.when I first rooted my I337 ATT S4
It would loose just as I would enter recovery and my recovery would ask if I wanted to fix it before rebooting. After flashing the supersu zip file
I have had zero issues with root.

[Q] CMW success, SU fail :(

Hello, first time poster. I recently tried rooting my phone using CWM method. I'm running sph-l720 with software version vpaumf9 and android version 4.2.2. I installed CWM (this version SPH-L720 OUDHS Recovery) with odin with success. Then flashed SuperUser v.099. Everything went smooth until I opened up super user and tried to install binaries and it says "Install failed". I'm wondering if I didnt have the wrong beginning firmware and i needed to (but didnt) install that pre-kernel. I'm also wondering if I have to download the original firmware and have to flash to stock in order to "unroot" even though I didnt finish the SuperUser process, or is their a way to delete the super user app and try to install it again using the same CWM i have already on the phone. I hope this isn't confusing. I'm not a complete novice to rooting, but no expert. I rooted my galaxy s2 but went to Iphone for a while, but now I'm back and a little dissapointed with myself at this fail. Any suggestions? Do i have to go to stock first? Was I using the wrong files for my initial firm ware and need the pre kernel? Am I blabbering on? (yes) Thanks in advance.

Grap CF-Autoroot from here
Follow the instructions here:
Boot back to phone. Open up SU and update binaries.
Then
Go to Playstore and download/install GooManager
Open GooManager and then press the 'menu' button (capicitive button next to Home Button) and choose to install recovery (I like TWRP).
Then let it do it's thing.
If you'd like a real easy way to get 'into recovery mode' from the phone I use the Quickboot app
Also make sure that if you are going to flash ANY ROMs you follow the instructions the developer suggests - many suggest specific recoveries be used

thank you! do i need to do anything before i do this? (Like using odin to revert back to stock?)
i ask because i already have CWM installed
I did the auto root, and open SuperSU and it doesnt ask to update binaries...does that mean it is already done. I didnt find the option in the settings.

As long as your on some kind of TW/Stock based ROM you should be Okay.
However if you want to go back to straight (AND ROOTED) stock you can use one of rwhilco12's 'one-click' restores.
The one click downloads as a zip. decompress and then run the one -click. If you've never run a oneclick read here
It will give you a stock ROM, rooted, MF9 Modem, Stock recovedry, and Stock kernel. You'll then have to use GooManger method to get custom recovery.

man thanks so much. so i definitly got super user access. I'm about to do the goo manager. since you suggested the twrp i think i'm going to try that. since i have CWM recovery installed, do u think that will create any issues if I go to install TWRP from goo manager

actually i googled and it seems that goo manager will seamlessly overwrite cwm. sorry for the questions before searching. appreciate the help. i almost didn't come on here, which would of lead me to reverting to stock, doing cwm again, then being upset that i needed twrm for most roms lmao. I owe u one. If u ever need to learn how to make bad decisions, just shoot me a pm. I got u covered.

No it will just replace it.
I actually (and many around here too) prefer TWRP 2.5.0.2.
You can download the zip for that here, boot to recovery you have now (CWM) and then install that. Or use Goo to install lates TWRP and boot to recovery and then install zip and choose the 2.5.02 you downloaded and then save to your sd card

scratch what i posted here. I ended up having to download ROMmanager and update CWM, then used CWM to install the zip you provided me. thanks so much man. Do you have a favorite stable ROM you recommend using TWRP. I value your advice

Glad you got it.
As for ROMs you really have to try them out for yourself. There are some really great TW ROMs ; Sacs, negalite, triforce and others. For CM/AOSP there are a whole bunch to choose from. I mess with just about all of them. But my daily driver has to be one hundred percent working and reliable so for that I'm usually on a stock debloated and modified TW ROM. Take some time to read through the OPs of the devs and just as importantly through the follow up posts to see what works what doesn't ahs how to fix or get what you need.

[Q] Recovery Mode

Long story short: I want cm on the S4 after using it on the HD+, but CWM isn't booting up.
I've seen problems regarding simply accessing the recovery mode like needing to use the buttons twice after powering on, but the thing is that after getting to do this, for whatever reason, the phone boots up with the default recovery option (Android system recovery <3e>).
Some background on the phone would be that it is rooted, about one year ago when I bought it. I fear that I might have flashed something back then, but I don't have any of the files. To add, I sadly don't remember the method, but I can give some device info:

The next and last thing would be that ROM manager says I have CWM installed and even with the reboot option of the app, it takes me to the default recovery.

Any similar experiences on how to deal with this? I'd at least have a means to access CWM.

Are you sure you're still rooted? If you're not sure I would re-flash root using motochopper

Well, yes. I do have things like tethering and su on the phone, plus root checking apps from the store say its rooted.

ROM Manager is crap. It says I have CWM 6.0.4.7 installed but when I boot into recovery it says 6.0.4.4.
I've been looking for a way to manually install the latest Touch version of CWM but so far I've come up with nothing. Maybe if you flash TWRP (via Goo Manager app) you'll then be able to flash CWM back over it. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries for Goo Manager to successfully flash the recovery.

Even better, I figured out how to flash CWM touch. The loki_tool downloaded here can patch any compatible img file and then flash your recovery directly.

Nvidia SHIELD Portable Root

Hi everyone!
This morning I woke up to find my SHIELD with the so waited notification of Lollipop update. I'm really happy to finally have lollipop running on my device, but sadly I found a problem after the update. I was trying to re-root my device, but neither the SHIELD RAM tool or Root Genius could do the trick. But I didn't gave up, I searched in Google any way to root my SHIELD with the still fresh update, and found that the Kinguser app can root it without trouble.
You just need to download the apk, install it on your SHIELD and open it.
Btw, the old recovery isn't working anymore, you can flash it with the RAM tool, but the device will reflash the stock recovery.

Downloaded and it's says shield portable android 5.1 not supported...

You need to turn on USB Debugging, and then run the app.

Old recovery is working for me - it's CWM 6.0.4.4.
I had to flash it twice, first time it was reflashed to stock.
PS: TWRP 2.8.5.0 (unofficial) is working too.

Look if you have your SHILD's bootloader unlocked, that may be causing the problem.

I wanted a full restore/clean version of the ROM without waiting for the factory image to be updated.
I flashed the 101 Factory Image from here. I notice that 103 is there now so just skip this step and flash that now.
I noticed that after flashing the latest SuperSU the device would never boot.
So I had to use KingRoot but for me the apk method never worked so I went with the desktop version.
To get Root I went to KingRoot's XDA page and downloaded the Desktop version.
When running the program it is all in Chinese but is thankfully idiot proof with its one big button on it. Just make sure that USB Debugging is turned on and wait for it to finish, it will reboot during the process.
KingRoot installs its own version of a Super User advisor so it will prompt when something needs root access and for most people that would be enough but I prefer SuperSU, Thankfully KingRoot has a set of instructions, follow these to the letter and it will guide you through removing KingRoot and installing SuperSU. During that process you will get a lot of errors saying that files are no longer there, just ignore them, that means the initial uninstall got the files.
Once I was able to ensure that SuperSU and Root where staying after a reboot I re-installed TWRP (for some reason I couldn't get CWM to stick after a reboot but oh well I like TWRP more >_>) and made a backup of my stock rooted device.
I then went to this page and grabbed the Unofficial Xposed 5.1 .zip and went to this page and grabbed the Xposed Installer.
Rebooted and waited for the App Cache to re-build as the Xposed framework nukes it then installed my mods as normal.
Took a little bit longer than normal to update but oh well, Everything is working smoothly and I'm happy with it.

Rooted my Shield two times wth CWM without problems.

Which cmw did you use and where did you get it? I tried using flashify with twrp and it says boot failed when booting into recover.

Here we go. I've flashed and rooted my SHIELD successfully after OTA upgrade - and today again after flashing the clean 103 factory Image.
SHIELD-Portable-Recoveries.zip
Update: I've attached a ZIP file with 4 different recoveries. Simply execute the Batch file I've included (if you're on Windows) and select 1-4.
stock KitKat recovery (from update 101)
stock Lollipop recovery (from update 103)
ClockworkMod recovery (CWM) 6.0.4.4 (somewhere from XDA, but couldn't find the link)
TWRP recovery 2.8.5.0 (from here)

From @Steel01 The TWRP located here may give people problems and we should be using the one in the MultiROM TWRP located here.

EDIT: I will test tonight and see what happens when you image with the factory image and just install MultiROM's TWRP and then try SuperSU's latest BETA.
I was trying to use the other TWRP before and could never boot which is why I did the KingRoot method.

If you wanted to change Kinguser to SuperSU all you have to do is download any "Control Rotation App" and set it as Portrait Mode (if it didn't work make sure that the Nvidia Shield Portable is in a sitting position and flip it , It should work , If not try installing other apps), Install "Super-Sume" , Then touch the big blue button , After that wait until the process is done , You should see SuperSU, In the other hand Kinguser has already vanished (I'm not sure if SuperSU will open automatically or not), Install the binary, Reboot, Done.
