I use TomTom on my Touch HD with a car charger.
The first charger I used was fine but since I lost it I cannot find a charger that works properly... At first I thought I was just using faulty charger's but as I have now tried 3 different ones I am beggining to wonder if the problem is with my HD!
The funny thing is that on both the main screen and in TomTom it is showing the status as 'charging'... even the light on the top of the phone is lit to show it is charging but the battery level is still going down all the time!
The only thing I can think of is that maybe the chargers I am using now are not as powerful as the first one I used? Or are all car chargers standard?
Either that or my HD is broken!
Can anyone please help me find a solution?
Ps. The phone still charges fine through both a wall plug socket and a USB connected to a PC.
The car charger I use I bought for my old Tytn 2 (original HTC one), works great for the HD and Diamond, even when the battery was at about 20% left on the HD, TomTom 7 running, screen brightness max, the battery was almost fully charged within an 1hr.
Think it's rated at 1amp, you might want to check the power rating on yours, anything under 1amp and it's really going struggle to charge while using it.
Unfortunately its not printed on any of my chargers what amp they are... I actually thought they were all the same amp but if some are more powerful than others this could be my problem.
What does concern me however is that even when the HD is switched off it is still not charging (even though the light at the top of the phone shows it should be!)
There are plenty of tools around (HTC's battery.exe, acbpowermonitor, battlog, powerguard, etc...) that can show you charge/discharge current. If your car charger gives you less than the unit is consuming, battery will not be able to charge.

I had this problem and found it was because I was charging through the usb socket on the stereo which always worked on Polaris but not with Blackstone. If I charge from the cig lighter socket it works good.

First I used my original HTCTyTn carcharger by trial. But he has not
enough power to charge and run TomTom at the same time!
So, i bought this new one (more powerfull) for the Touch HD.

I bought a cheap and cheerful universal usb charger from tesco's for a couple quid. Works great and no problems with power whilst running TomTom
Hi, first post here and rather than start a similar thread so soon, i thought it best to post here.
Is it possible for car chargers to over-charge the device? I bought a cheap and cheerful car charger off ebay but was a bit concerned some of them are listed as having overcharge protection and this one wasn't. Wouldn't normally be bothered but its a £550 handset!
Cheers!
Anybody ever hear of this?
Started intermittently charge/stop charging.. Then just stopped.
Rebooted? Nothing.
I have an extra battery...tried that....same thing!
Finally I wiped everything and it charged again...all night (thank God... I was at 15%)
BUT....checked just a bit ago and it was intemittently charging and stopping again...now I'm back to no charging. WTF....lol.
Only other info I can offer is the that at times I've used a second nonNote android charger (meant for my hotspot device...that does output to 1.2 but I don't think that would do anything..I used it on my Galaxy 2 Touch for months.
If anyone can give any insights I'd greatly appreciate.
I cannot charge my Note at all rights now.
Have you tried a different charger and/or USB cable?
Regards,
Dave
Thanks...yeah 2 different chargers. USB...you mean charging via PC right? You know i haven't tried it believe it or not!
I'm sure i could wipe everything again and it'd work again..but...big pain!
Right now I have to wall charge the battery itself.
Hey OP, any updates on this??
After I flashed Abyss 2.5 on top of Cassie's V3 on my Note a few days ago it started doing the charge/stop status and I could ONLY charge it while off and even sometimes it was awakening it self up!! And finally it gave up to no charge at all.
As from yesterday is officially "dead" since no recovery/download mode can be entered because of low battery. "Download" mode say's too low battery and it can't download.
Hey guys I really need some help on this. NO external battery chargers are available to try and no one I know has another Note to ask to charge my battery..
What do you thing? Faulty hardware/micro-usb port or something? I'm NOT blaming anyone since it's not a widespread issue but this DID happened ONLY after flashing Abyss 2.5 from CF KKA.
Thank you for your help guys in advance. Please let's try and resurrect my NOTE!
P.S: Also I forgot to add that immediately after flashing Abyss 2.5 I lost USB functionality in any way while power on.
I also tried:
3-4 different wall sockets.
2 different working cables. Original and one SE brand. Both working on other devices.
Tried removing battery MANY times.. left from 20sec to 1-5minutes etc(despair yeah).
PLEASE any info/help would be GREATLY appreciated..

And risk of having my 2year warranty thrown because of root or custom rom which they can blame for my problem? I think otherwise.
When I manage to charge the battery I might put everything back to stock and take it for a check if the problems continue.
Btw, you response: "...Instead of asking people here..." got me thinking a bit.. It should made you think a bit too.. Why?
Because 95% of your problems can be solve from online research. Relatively speaking of course. The ONLY times I couldn't fix something by my self(speaking for electronics, but can be applied on many other different occasions) was because of soldering needs which then I have a certified friend with good soldering skills and he does the job for me..
Example: One Acer 7736Z I was repairing had a blown/dead power ic chip. I ordered it, my friend soldered it since I never messed with soldering and all good. Done.
Another example: I have a Sammy 59D550. I had some problems.. Should I every time that I have a problem find a car to transfer it to the repair center/shop or do some research online which in the end I fixed my problem with a simple firmware update..? I prefer the latter.
Please excuse the comment, I meant it in a more generalized way, not directly to you, but that "...Instead of asking people here..." got me a bit going. No offense meant.

A little update on my "situation".. Phone is charging and ALL thanks to ephestione. Also I followed the video below and did exactly on my note and it's charging as we speak..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pYcgmLhUcQ
Procedure: As it might help future visitors.
I cut a mini usb since as I have many spare.
Attached only the red(positive)/black(negative) wires to the phone's corresponding battery pin.
Forced the battery in to secure a good grip between them.
Connected the other normal USB end plug to my Note's original Samsung USD charger.
Phone is successfully charging for now.
I believe what I did was wipe all and reflash, ...and all was well.
I have found my Note and SGS2 to be pretty sensitive to chargers. What do you mean outputs to 1.2? You need it to output at least 800mah, probably 1000mah. I would expect the Note to draw more power than the SGS2 but I'm not sure. I bought a Rocket Fish (good quality usually) charger from Best Buy. It didn't even say on the box but output only 600mah and the phone acted just like you are saying.
One charger I bought from Walmart, if I plug it in the TOUCH SCREEN STOPS WORKING!! Crazy!
I have had good luck with blackberry chargers. Make sure the USB cable you use is good also. I have had some that worked great with other phones and not with Galaxy phones, even some that worked great with my SGS2 don't work so good with my Note.
wipe battery stats
i reckon you hard reset and stick to OEM batteries, and buy an external charger on ebay!
I am also having a charging problem but it is because any charger that I plug in is loose in the phone and only having it in the right position works. I have tried many different chargers but my port on the phone is just too loose. How do I get it to a Samsung repair shop? I called samsung and they told me they only fix phones that are ment for the US and my phone is an international version.

Unfortunately, Samsung does not service international note in the states. They do not train as their product is not officially sold.

So am I just out of luck getting my charging port fixed?
My note did the same thing. I took some compressed air and sprayed the micro usb charge port with it a few times. Worked like a charm. Remember if any of the pins don't make contact then it wont charge.
Know this might sound goofy but same thing happen to me.
2 things that im pretty sure in some combo, was the issue
1. USB port got dirt/debris
2. The kernel I was running. Im 99% sure this was the issue all along. I was running abyss or something like that.
Galaxy Charging Current:
* Please do not re-upload the apk. Link to this thread instead. *
I've made a simple app that displays the three values related to the charging current that are provided by Samsung:
current_now: I think this *always* shows 999 on AC and 466 on USB.
current_avg: Not sure about this one... Usually is the same as current_max (at least after some seconds)
current_max: This is the most important one, since it defines the maximum charging current. In other others, the phone will not get more current to charge the battery than the value displayed here. For example, on an S3, if this shows anything much less 1000, the device is charging slower than it should/could.
The app also comes with a simple (and ugly :cyclops widget that shows the current_max, so that we can easily check weather the device is charging at the optimal current (1000mA on the S3) or not.
If you find the application useful and want to contribute please buy the Pro version from Google Play.
The Pro version also has some extra features like auto-refresh and an optional dark theme.
Pro version on Google Play: Galaxy Charging Current Pro
Lite version on Google Play: Galaxy Charging Current Lite
The application is compatible with non-US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2.
It was not tested on the Galaxy S4 yet. If you have a Galaxy S4 please report if the application works.
Background (why I made this app and why you should check it):
I've started to notice that when I use a USB extension to charge the SGS3 it charges *really* slowly.
This only happens sometimes and the problem does not happen in other smartphones I've used. Also, it's not a cable fault, since I've tested more than one cable.
After some "research" I've found that the file /sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_max does not show 1000 (1A) when using the extension. Instead it shows much lower values like 200, 300 and, sometimes, 600. Even when using only the stock cable *sometimes* it shows 900 or much lower values like 600 (when it should show 1000), thus charging slower. Disconnecting the cable and reconnecting usually updates the value to 1000.
It seems that the current_max file shows the current limit at which the phone is charging, and if it is charging at less than 1000mA, it is charging slower that it should/can, since the stock charger has an output of 1000mA.
Does anyone know why this happens? I *think* that the battery/charging driver does some checks when the cable is connect to find the maximum safe current and, due to signal noise that occurs when the cable is being connected, it sets a lower maximum value. If this is the case, the driver should periodically repeat the test to update the max charging current.
By the way, I've seen this behavior on rooted stock 4.1.1 and also 4.1.2.

But it happens to me when using the wall charger. No problems with USB charging. Haven't checked the file mentioned in the first post for the charging values, but the slow charging problem exists exactly as mentioned in the OP. Again, disconnecting and re-connecting the cable solves the issue.
Happens with all ROMs and kernels.
Using the original Samsung cable and charger. Don't have any other cable.

It would be nice if more people checked this behavior so that we could find why it happens.
To make things easier, I've attached a simple app (with widget) in the first post that displays the charging current values, so that everyone can check if the device is charging at full current.
The faster your battery charges, the faster it wears.
I set the current to the minimum using STweaks and Siyah Kernel.
Also I don't know what is your problem and why you are in a hurry to charge your batteries with the maximum current supported by the charger? That's nonsense.

Well, first because when I use a USB extension the current is so low that it charges like 10% in 8 hours (once again, this does not happen in another HTC smartphone, with the same charger+extensions).
Second, because even when using the stock cable I don't like to wait 4 hours to be able pick the phone and go out (usually it takes only 2 and a half hours, but sometimes....).
Understand that each person has different habits and needs. Maybe for you it is nonsense that a person wants the phone charged fast, but for me it is nonsense that you want your phone to charge slowly. Right, if I'm spending a whole day at the desk I don't mind the phone taking the whole day to charge, but that is not always the case.
I've updated the first post with a new version of the current check app that fixes the widget not updating bug (for those who like to use the widget).
I've got an old Samsung wall charger (think from my Omnia HD days) with an output of 0.7A. That charges mine in about 2.5hrs from dead. Only use that coz I've noticed that charging from USB is majorly slow

I always check your app as soon as I connect my phone to the charger. I ensure that the current_max is at 1000 before leaving the phone alone to charge in peace.
I usually wake up with just enough time to fully charge the phone before leaving for work. So, your app is a God-send. :good:
Does this apply for USB charging too??

I changed it to 700..
I see a little difference in the rate of charging..
has it something to do with it??

Yes, you can check the charge current both in AC and USB. Connect the cable and check the current_max value (or use the widget), and see if it is set to something near 700.
How did you set it to 700 on USB? Using a custom ROM?

Holy crap. It's literally IN THIS THREAD.
Leave it on your charger for several hours and see if it boots. If not, it's probably RMA time.
It's plugged for about 10 hours and nothing.

I was just mentioning other options just in case someone couldn't get into the bootloader. What if you send the phone to lg because you couldn't get into the bootloader to reflash and they can by disconnecting the battery and find out that you are unlocked and rooted when the phone boots back up, which would also void your warranty. Although I would not take the back cover off if the phone was stock, might as well send the phone back if you can't get it to boot.

You seem to know very little about how chargers, batteries and charging circuitry works. To put your mind at ease, a USB 2.0 port is rated at 5V DC, 500mA. That will charge a Nexus 4, albeit slowly. Your 0.7A charger isn't going to fry anything, as there are multiple safeties built in, unless something is SEVERELY wrong with it, meaning faulty construction.

So you are telling me that, unless there is any issue with the charger (faulty construction) there is no reason to worry about that it will lead to this "Red light of death" or any other issue (lowering battery lifetime for example)?
This is totally off topic but, Do you (personally) think it's true what people say that charging a cellphone with a lower output charger increases its battery service?
Quick question:
Does this red light issue appear when battery is drain to 0% (among other factors)

There is no reason to worry unless the charger or your phone is faulty, in other words, hardware failure on either side. Unfortunately there would be no easy to foresee that.
The charging circuitry will only use what it needs to do it's job. As long as the voltage is within range and the current is not too LOW, you're OK. The N4 is rated at 900 mA to perform a standard charge. It will accept as low as approx. 500 mA to charge in USB mode. That idea is rubbish.
I have had the phone for a few days now. I have tried 3 different charging bricks as well as a new Samsung charging cable. No matter what I do, I only get "charing USB" and using the ampere app, it never hits about 4volts on charging and says "normal" as charging state. I'm using a galaxy s6 fast charger and tried 2 cables and 3 bricks and still just "normal" mode. Any help pls?
