I've been on 4.3 for a while now, hesitating to upgrade to KK because I've read some complaints about SD card issue and battery life.
Just want to ask, are they resolved or have workarounds developed already? Or should I still hold off upgrading?
Edit: Found a list of potential issues w upgrading. Can anyone (esp. SG users) confirm?
1. SD card problems
2. Force close for action menu, handwriting and Samsung keyboard
3. Unable to switch GMS/UMTS in the Preferred network mode menu

that problem is sovled. u should try 4.4.2 and feel it. more comfotable than 4.3
Sorry for bad eng
4.4.2 is noticeably snappier overall for me.
For all who have updated to KK, can you confirm the known issues in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658315) I'm planning on following the tutorial in that thread, or does anyone know of a better way?

I'm in Singapore, but my handset is export set (France firmware).
I was on MJ7 for 1 month+ (non-rooted), and just upgraded into KK 4.4.2 DBT NB7 Germany. And I rooted with CF-Autoroot with Philz CWM installed now.
So to be frank the link you have provided earlier, I have no idea, because I have never got a chance to root before upgrading to MJ7 4.3.
by the time I upgrade to MJ7, then I know I can't root without tripping its KNOX warranty bit.
So I have to bear with non-rooted until I set up my mind to upgrade to KK and finally I rooted my device on KK, and of course KNOX is tripped, but I don't care with it, as long as no other effects, other than warranty...
After using KK - DBT NB7 for 3 days, I can tell you, my SD card has no problem (only when I want to download and save to SD card from Dolphin browser, it doesn't recognize my SDcard because it is read as "external SD" instead of "storage\external SD"). Other than this, my SD card is just fine.
For problems no. 2 also never exists.
my network is running very well in 4G, H+, H, G. No problem at all.
But the happiest thing is... battery much much much better.
It is more reasonable to be used on KK, compare on earlier version of android for the battery.
And in sleep mode, for 4 hours, it dropped only 2%, things which I never found on my earlier device running on earlier android.
Cheer!

If I try to update to KK while keeping root and face problems, I can always just flash "normally" through desktop Odin (no more root) and root using CF autoroot, and everything will be fine, just that root is tripped right?

hi, i just got my note 3 n9005 international a couple of days ago & now its time to root...you can say i am a little new to samsung because the last device i used was an s3 & that was a long time ago.....
i dont have any warranty so knox isnt that big of a concern unless it may cause some sort of damage to the phone...so far i have read..its only for warranty purposes like the flash counter for s3.
i was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to point me to rooting & everything else i need to do to install custom roms including recovery...
i tried to read through the instructions of root de la vega but i find it too complicated...so i was thinking of doing cf auto root....
thank you

Samsung issue a 24month warranty on the Note 3 (maybe country specific?) -
If KNOX isn't an issue for you and you do not mind tripping it, the CF-Auto is the way to go.
RDLV is complicated if you're lazy, but it does preserve KNOX status depending on your bootloader version, put in #*1234# into your dial pad and post the results. We can know if you can use RDLV.
However, if you want to flash a Custom ROM, then you will need a custom recovery, which will trip your KNOX (can't be done without) - on the Android dev section and Orginal Android dev section (in this sub forum) are some Custom ROMs and the instructions on how to do so.
I have used X-Note, Crash and am currently using AllianceROM, but there are a few others.
Just be careful with custom kernels until you're pretty confident cause you can bootloop and ruin your EFS quite easily (it is fixable 99% of the time tho, script is on here also)
EDIT : All you need is here pretty much
thank you for your reply & these are the stats
AP: N9005XXUDMJ6
CP: N9005XXUDMJ4
CSC: N9005EVRDMJ4
also RDLV is way too complicated for me & besides i do plan to install a custom recovery so i think that defeats the point ....since you seem to have tripped knox, there hasnt been any kind of system issue i hope? this whole knox business gave me cold feet when i read about it...but so far as i can see..its just a flash counter.... could you tell me the tools i need to get started with? i already downloaded the usb drivers & odin 3.09..is there anything else i should need?
p.s. i was reading about "before or later MJ7 4" whatever...& i was wondering which of these was it refering to? ap? thank you
Once you trip the knox counter it makes no difference to the phone except not being able to use knox containers, and of course the warranty which you know. -- if you have the drivers and odin. Go grab cf-autoroot, run it thru odin and voila all done, similar for twrp or Cwm which ever you choose as your custom recovery (I use twrp) flash in odin and that's it all set.
Just make sure and I can't stress this enough, that you flash the right ROM for the N9005, and N900 doesn't work. - avoid doing restores with twrp for now also when you do a back up, some issues have arose recently and not sure of they're resolved or not yet.
Have fun man, just read everything about the ROM etc before you flash the odd one has FC's or NFC issues
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
ok so backing up & restoring with recovery is, for the time being, a no no? yes i will make sure to see if the roms are made for n9005 only....i will probably start off with omega roms as they are the 1st choice i had when i started modding the s3 ....thank you soo much mate for all the info...1 last thing to clear up is i am reading on developers talking about MJ or MK or whatever it is....are they talking about the build number i find in Settings/About??
1 thing i couldnt get a proper answer for...is how does 1 know they have the international variant of the n9005 anyway? normally if a n9005 is under some sort of carrier...the carrier logo would flash when booting up right? because thats what happens on my brother's note 3 n9005...when he boots up his phone..it shows SFR logo before going to the samsung bootanimation.....but on mine there is no such thing...the simple note 3 n9005 text then samsung boot animation & then straight to system...that means mine is the unbranded 1 am i correct?

Yeah yours is unbranded, only thing that may/will apply to you is region lock (which unless you're leaving the country your purchased your phone in isn't an issue at the start.
Although I see your CSC is EVR (if I recall correctly that is EE UK's firmware on board)
EDIT: Yes MK/ML are build numbers
no i dont have region lock..THAT i checked...so can i go forwards with all the rooting recovery & custom roms? i did find a orange core services apk on my apps manager under ALL tab..... also what original firmware can i roll back to incase anything goes wrong? any specifics?

Yup can go forwards. EVR (EE aka Orange/T-Mobile) have unlocked phones so yeah you won't have region lock. Which means yours is unbranded but carrier unbranded.
As for firmware, it depends on what region you are using? And what country you are in (you could use BTU (also UK, unbranded but EVR is ok also) - You are **now I say this depending on your country/region** OK on MJ7 or MK2 IF you upgrade since you're using a UK based ROM/CSC your network obviously supports it. However battery life is better on lower than MJ6. So it's your choice really.
Most custom ROMs are MK2 or ML2 atm I think, - Not sure if any upgrade your bootloader to MJ7 (if they do, you can't roll back any lower currently)
i just need a stock firmware so as i have a fallback if anything goes wrong...nothing more really as i plan to stick with custom roms...will this do?
http://samsung-updates.com/details/17028/Galaxy_Note_3_Snapdragon/SM-N9005/EVR/N9005XXUDMJ6.html
i am in Bangladesh so i am pretty confident that there isnt any rom for my region
yea i was wondering about the battery life myself...i dont know what version my brother's note is but his battery lasts noticibly longer than mine does....i was even planning on swapping batteries as i thought it might be a cell related issue

As long as your bootloader doesn't go to MJ7 - that firmware is OK, If your bootloader updates ( I think it may with the custom ROM) you can't roll back to MJ6, you can go to MJ7 or MK2 via BTU which will work for you since EVR works.
the latest omega is ML2 so by that measure...i wont be able to roll back to MK2 either & the latest on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459328 is MK2

You can drop back as far as MJ7 ( I have at least when I've returned to stock due to mess ups) my build is MK2 atm
the bootloader only goes to MJ7 (last I checked, If it has changed then mine still lets me roll to MJ7)
csc seems a very complicated mess...GOD when did the mod friendly samsung go this crazy? the s3 was the most fun thing to mod...now this feels more complicated then Sony's!! :'( since my csc is EVR...is it possible to put BTU? i saw someone post this but didnt get any replies... http://www.usofttech.com/t128991.html
OH CRAP you said this BTU already...sorry my bad.... just trying to absorb all this
1 last query & i think i can start....with my current MJ6 build...can i do the cf auto root? or do i need to be on a lower build? if i can...then i think i will start or should i wait for the MJ7 to finish downloading & root that with cf auto root? & mate...thank you... you helped clear a lot of the confusions stopping me from modding this...now i think i can start things with a bit of confidence...thank you.... MUCH appreciated

You can CF root straight away, - since you're triggering KNOX anyway it won't affect you. Then on with custom recovery etc, just keep MJ7 as your stock back up on your PC just incase. and IF you run into any issues with EFS (bootloops/no signal/wifi/baseband etc) use THIS It has saved me and quite a few others.
EDIT: And no problem man, glad to help, we all start somewhere with new devices
mate....the odin inside the cf root is 1.85 & the 1 got from google is 3.09 which should i use? & is PDA & AP the same thing because they are diff in the 2 versions of odin

I use 3.07 personally - and flash using PDA -- Use the one with CF root if you're unsure
the phone is rooted ahhh feels like home again ....mate you said earlier that restoring backups on twrp causes system issues....i was wondering if this is true for just twrp or ALL current recoveries in general? which recovery would you suggest? also i was wondering about that script you told me about...the 1 about soft brick.... that fixes corrupt efs due to flashes yes? if so, does that mean it doesnt require my backup of efs?

TWRP has issues *sometimes* there's a few posts about it around, I personally have had no problems and use TWRP fine, but I mentioned it because what works for one, doesn't always for another.
As for EFS backup, keep it just incase -- IT seems Android can rebuild the EFS again with that fire script. -- It's handy though, gotten a few out of the crapper including myself
Hey guys i have a samsung galaxy s4 on android 4.4.2 kitkat and i am not happy at all with the kitkat update since it has ruined battery life and is causing many other problems like lag and overheating
So i want to downgrade to the stock 4.2.2. I have never rooted my samsung galaxy s4 and i am still unrooted.
I know knox will be set to 0x1 after downgrading but i do not care about it as triangle away supports galaxy s4 now .
So here is what i want to know
If i download the proper 4.2.2 firmware from sammobile according to my country(India) and install it via odin then will the process work? and if it is the right procedure does it require root ?
Is there any chance that my phone can get bricked because of knox ?
and how should i take backup of efs in case of a possible imei error ?
I know how to downgrade i9505 but i9500 Im not sure about it I never tested it out
I think you can downgrade successfully, I have a thread about how to downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 but its for i9505 check my profile threads
You can downgrade successfully if you follow my guide, but you will lose wifi of maybe imei
So you can solve 4.3 wifi problem by downloading 4.3 kernel
You can use the same way to downgrade from 4.3 to 4.2.2
And for how to backup your imei you will need a rooted device !!
There some apps that backsup imei
Just look for your phone model "gt-i9500"
And you can backup you system starting from imei by having custom recovery like CWM and do Nandroid
And Knox will be tripped
Downgrade or Install Custom ROM

Hey dude,
I don't really understand how the s4 lags - did u try resetting the device?
the battery life is fine with the latest update.
Overheating is still there in i9500 & also it cools down rapidly - I guess its a HW design. Hope it wont be fixed.
I was annoyed with the overheating issue & now i am used to it. It heats while using 2G or 3G Internet & playing games.
Using regular apps it doesn't heats up & now i am okay with it.
Regarding the downgrade, frimware from sammobile will work fine. You will have to install via odin.
no your phone wont get bricked cos of knox - I suggest you to follow a video tutorial and do the downgrade.
But I recommend you to try a custom rom such as Omega, Hassan etc
In my experience the these roms are very good on battery and performance. Pls do note these roms (Omega, Hassan) are based on samsung stock rom.
If you still want to downgrade, I would suggest you to take it to the service center guys & they will do it for free.
Hope this helps!! :good:
Yeah it mostly gets heated while playing games and using chrome
Though i can still live with the heat because eventually i will get used to it after some time
But the lag is killing me
My phone shows lags while entering and leaving apps and camera and gallery too and it was not lagging before on 4.2.2
Also i have experienced significant battery drag
While using the internet it falls of by 1 percent every two minutes
Is this kind of battery drop normal ?
I am really missing the old firmware so i think i am gonna go to samsung and get it downgraded from there
Thanx for the sugesstion bro

Hey bro,
In my experience with the S4 on Stock ROM I never experienced a lag.
Please check on the settings - switch off the gimmicky features such as Air View, Air Gesture, S Beam, Air Gesture, Motion, Palm Motion etc etc.
Settings --> Connections Tab --> NFC, S Beam, Nearby devices, Screen Mirroring
Settings --> My Device -->(scroll down) motions & gestures, smart screen, air view
Turn locations off
Check the battery graph - see which app consumes more
I had this issues when these features were on.
The phone will be always hot, battery was draining like 1 % for 1 to 2 mins.
There is no lag with camera and gallery.
Battery drag is bit similar that I lose 1% for every 3 to 4 mins on 2/3G Internet. But on Wifi battery is solid.
In my opinion battery is very solid in S4.
The latest firmware is very stable. The performance has increased from old firmwares.
If you hv rooted the device, and got custom recovery just try a custom rom.
Okay i think it would be good to try the custom rom
So i am gonna try that and see what happens

As I know, if you download an official firmware of samsung from sammobile, you can downgrade/upgrade your firmware without rooting, just flash via odin. Maybe you can uninstall KNOX first before downgrading, open KNOX mode and press menu and click uninstall KNOX. I hope this helps. Good Luck
Okay guys, this is not first thread about this subject but give your thoughts please.
I have:
Note 3 (SM-N9005) running some JB 4.3, unrooted
Note Pro 12.2 LTE (SM-N905) running KK 4.2
So far I haven't got any problems with Note 3, so kinda no reason to update it to 4.4, but does that update do more good or harm to me, since no way to dowgrade back.
About ext. sdcard writing problem, I haven't noticed anything that differs between my JB Note 3 and KK NP 12.2
Main reason why I would want KK on my Note 3 is Samsung SideSync feature (works only on KitKat devices) that I could use my Note 3 through my NP 12.2..
But is that really that good reason to update fully working phone (if there comes some problems with KitKat)??
Please help me with this, thanks

For me personally, I don't see more harms compare to the good parts.
I understand so many ppl do complain about KK firmwares. And to be frank, those problems stated, I have never experienced on my N9005 device (**touch wood**)
My ext. sd card writing also has no problem eversince I upgraded from JB to KK for the first time.
S-view cover, some also stated they experience problems, but my S-view is working just fine. And I have a fake S-view (made in China)
But all is your decision to make. My only advise is... if you really want to upgrade, after the upgrade is done, no matter you still can go through the homescreen, try to do factory reset from stock recovery. This step is very simple, but do help a lot to avoid future unnecessary problems (example : battery drains, FC, freeze, sudden reboot, phone very slow, etc).
So, my suggestions is, do backup of your important data (before upgrade) to your external SD, or to your laptop/PC.

Please help me with this, thanks

yeah there few changes in KK update of N3
few GUI improvement
reason u may like to update is RAM management that is in native KitKat codes that of course others implements it.
:good:
Thanks, both of you..
I think I'm gonna update when I got some time to make all backups of my phone.
But let's see if this get some more replys and maby some pros/cons about KitKat
I have original S-View (which I do not use, since it makes phone too bulky for me), so I'm not worried about KitKat affects to those covers.
On my NP 12.2 running KK I haven't seen any issues with external sdcard so that should be fine.
(Possible??) battery drain issues don't scare me, and of course if I update, I'm going to make factory reset from recovery to make "clean" install
Last time I updated my phone, a day after I found URDLV, way to root without tripping KNOX. But obviously it was too late since that update patched bootloader, LOL.
I bet this wont most probably happen when going from JB to KK, that someone finds a way to root JB without tripping KNOX, but not for KK.
KitKat makes device faster/smoother (I've read somewhere, don't know is it really noticable on daily use?)
So what else you people have noticed running KK versus JB, any other cons and how about pros?

it is noticeable

Yep... So I pulled the trigger and updated my phone.
First impressions:
-It's a lot faster
-After update my USB 3.0 connection works no more to my PC (My NP 12.2 USB 3 connection also don't work, now I found what's the reason.. KitKat)
-My favourite internet browser force closes when trying to open it (I loved it since it was like ICS stock browser, got those must have fast button when you slide from edge of screen, it was fast and always on fullscreen exept when you opened adress line from fast button Does any of you know any similar browser working on (non rooted) KitKat?)
It takes 100++ years to get phone back to "usable" state (All settings, homescreens, app drawer, apps and they're settings, WIFI settings, paired BT devices...etc..etc....)
Let's see what else time shows me
Has anyone used the towelroot method to root? I'm still on JB firmware (BTU MK2) with root and knox 0x0, im wanting to upgrade to KK but im not sure of which course of action to take.
I'm thinking of installing a pre-June KK firmware but im not sure which one to install (region doesn't really bother me as long as it's english and not AUS). What do you guys think, any advice?
I'm tossing up between flashing the XSP NE4 rom or the BTU ND3 rom and then rooting using towelroot. Has anyone had any issues with these 2 roms, especially battery issues?
Towelroot preserved Knox 0 for me and it was pretty painless, twice already, MI7 to NF4 and now to NF9, so yes it works great at least for me. In my case battery sucked really bad after each update, but it was suggested to me to do full factory reset, as this supposed to work for many. Instead I decided to do exactly what I root my phone for, freeze/delete useless factory bloatware. It worked after first update, I'm still working on it after second, since I just did it couple days ago. On the other hand I'm not sure those updates are even worth the trouble, not much new that I can see, mostly internal stuff. Also originally I SIM and region unlocked my phone using Chainfire program, but I think all that is gone now and I don't think there is new unlock method, so I may regret this update in the future if I travel. And then there is this SD card nonsense that can show up with older programs, so frankly I don't know, choose your poison, but again, towelroot works fine, the question is: is it worth to upgrade.
Greetings
This is the last resort as I know there is plenty of info on here for everyone's questions but at the minute i'm boggled!
I have the note 3 / gt - n9005 UK version.
I went from stock 4.3 to 4.4.2 then to the more recent 4.4.2 update a few weeks back.
I subsequently rooted the latest 4.4.2 without hiccups.
So this activated the Knox 0x1 warranty issue ( no big concern right ? )
I found 4.4.2 to be problematic i.e unable to write to SD card without the SD card write app from google stores.
Also I found I couldn't transfer folders or files from the root of the phone onto my desktop!
So in my moment of wisdom I chose to try and downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3
Having downloaded the original stock 4.3 rom from sam mobile I tried to flash to the phone using odin............no joy
Having done some more research I read that once you have updated to 4.4.2 there is NO going back.........true or false ???
So remembering how clever you boys and girls are on here I decided to read a few threads and came across:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2461929&nocache=1
Pretty amazing stuff.....however I tried both options using the stock rom pre rooted with no knox and for phones knox 0x01 and then also tried the philz flashable zip roms.
To no avail, none of them worked for me personally and I wanted to know why ?
I go to recovery mode having installed philz touch latest version and clean and wipe the personal data and dalvik caches. Tried to install the zip from sd card, it installs and says enjoy.................but doesnt boot up ?
The odin version installs and then gets stuck in the recovery booting mode ??
Can anyone clarify any methods to remedy this method to downgrade to jelly bean 4.3 on a note 3 having already had kit kat 4.4.2 rooted ?
Many thanks for reading and any help in advance

100% you cannot downgrade to jelly bean. you are stuck on kitkat forever.. :fingers-crossed:
As far as I know, only Canadian version can downgrade. For some reason that I didn't really care to research.
I did the same thing as you. I didn't like KitKat and tried to downgrade.
It doesn't work. We are stuck on KitKat. . .
