Formatting a phone without access to the touch screen? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, so I recently broke the screen on my g2 and as you all know this has pretty much caused the touch screen to go non-functional. I was wondering if there was a way for me to format it via a computer of some sorts? If I could at least get access pass the passcode screen I could maybe connect a Bluetooth keyboard and navigate it to an extent but the screen won't let me put my password in. Any info would be helpful, thanks!

If you enabled USB debugging before the touch stopped working, you can use "adb tap x y" commands to get around and wipe it. I'm not sure how flashing recoveries works on this phone yet, but if it doesn't require you to use the screen, you can do that and wipe from there.
If you have a swipe lock screen enabled, you can use "adb swipe x1 y1 x2 y2".

Just put it back to stock with this.

Screed died. Need pictures.

So, the screen died on my Vibrant yesterday. I am going to get a warranty replacement, but I need to get the camera pictures from the internal flash card. It still responds to touch, but the screen is black. What would be the easiest way to get the pictures off? I had it set to prompt on USB connection, but I can't seem to hit the USB Storage option.
*EDIT*
I managed to tap the USB storage button.
You just randomly tap until you hit it. ._.
^ use your... sensory?? skills????
Tap where you think is - i don't even know.
Use vibrant AIO tool box you can download anything you want off your phone l.

Remote wiping my broken N4

Sadly dropped my Nexus 4 and cracked the front screen on Xmas eve which also made it unresponsive to touch. Have luckily got my HOX to fall back on but would like to wipe my N4 before sending it back to my mobile phone insurance firm. How do I do this without being able to use the touch screen?
Thanks guys. Shall we start taking bets on when I get my replacement?

If you have ADB access and can turn on the phone, try using the Nexus Root Toolkit and flash stock/lock the phone. At least that's what I'd try. Only problem I can foresee is you not having USB debugging enabled.

Can you not get one of them Plan B remote wipe apps? The ones that are usually used for instances such as when your phone is stolen?

You can, but if it requires the user to interface with the program to set it up, then it won't work.
If the insurance firm doesn't care if the phone is rooted or not, you can unlock bootloader (with fastboot, from the command line) and flash a custom recovery. Most custom recoveries use the volume up/down keys and the power key to navigate, so you don't have to use touch at all. Then, once you are there, you can wipe it. (You can even get a nandroid backup, transfer it to your desktop, and then do the wipe)

This. And you can lock the boot loader with adb as well, and probably unroot it too, just in case.

Yes I think you are as you would have to first enable the developer options and that requires long pressing the build number in the about phone settings. Once the developer options are unlocked you can enable usb debugging. Don't know of any other way to do it though I'm not an expert on adb.

You are never screwed if you can get into the bootloader screen. You can format and return your phone to stock using fastboot from the bootloader screen, dont need usb debugging for fastboot. Hold down power and volume +/- to get into bootloader screen.

[Q] Nexus 7 password lock/crack screen workaround please?

I cracked my Nexus 7 screen on the left side and that cracked side no longer accepts touch input. Three letters of my password are on that side and I had orientation locked to landscape mode in my previous use before I cracked it. If I could somehow get to portrait mode I would be able to input my password and use the device with the only limit being my having to flip the device around all of the time when I need to touch the screen in that area.
Anyway of resetting the password or reorientating it from the lock screen? I won't have the money to fix it for about a month and a half and I don't want to factory reset and lose all my data.
I searched for ways to reset password and found nothing useful besides factory reset. I also searched for things I might be able to do by hooking it up to a PC via USB but not one search item turned up was even closely relevant no matther how I phrased it.
Thanks.

I've definitly thought of that I won't have any money until next month sometime.
There is a thread on xda that tells how to remove the lock, and it works. Do a search.

boot to recovery and make nandroid backup (if you don't make one yet) then factory reset. You can restore backup later on, easy as pie.
Fix with broken screen and lock
Hey guys,
This will not work for all broken screens. i had the pattern lock and broke 3/4 the screen was not responsive to touch. i was able to use google play store > manage devices. Then change password. this changed it from pattern to a password field. i was able to set a new password that was accessible in the small section of screen that worked.
I was then able to flip the screen in any direction to access what i needed including the usb debug so i could use OTG and get a mouse to control the whole thing. also i was able to get the Bluetooth connection going and control it over my computer and do anything i needed.
Hope this helps someone.

[Q] Unlock screen without touchscreen

Hi guys,
I've got a problem. My Nexus 4 fall on the ground, and the touchscreen is broken. The phone works, I can got to the lock screen, but then I cannot selection anything to unlock it. I know the schema to do. Is it possible to change my finger for anything else, like mouse? Or find another solution?
Then I could unlock and try to get something from it.
Thanks
Do you have debugging enabled? You can use adb to pull whatever you need to get from it

What kind of lock screen do you have?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I don't think USB debugging is on, and I can't verify directly on the phone. is there a way to look that with the computer?
The lock screen is a scheme with 9 dots
. . .
: : :
, and I have to unlock it with a Z scheme from the top left corner to the low right corner. there's only a little part of the touchscreen working, which include the two down dot at the left.
Just type
adb devices
Into cmd/terminal, if you see your serial number than good, if you see a blank line than try again from recovery. If you get an error than adb is not functioning on PC and this needs to be fixed

Touch input broken- alternative input methods?

I was given two Nexus 4 units with fractured glass to tinker with- I'd like to use them to just run a data processing app as a lower powered server. The problem is that the touch input appears to be completely dead on one unit, and only 30% of the screen responds to touch on the other!
I can't even get past the welcome screen, which is problematic. Can someone help me come up with a way to get an alternative input? I just want to get in far enough to install the app and run it, I'm thinking either via remote desktop or keyboard/mouse via OTG cable.
Both units have stock roms, which means USB debugging is off and apparently OTG support doesn't exist either. I'm feeling like I hit a brick wall here. Is there anything I can do, or are these units useless? Can a custom rom with OTG support be installed perhaps through recovery? Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful, thanks!
Try the phone which works 30% screen by rotating in 90 degrees or 180 degree and then try to select the menu options. If it works then you can try for something.

Problem is that the homescreen doesn't rotate. I needed to click "next" in the bottom right corner to advance past the welcome screen, and I couldn't!
But I was able to pull down the top bar and get into settings from there, and turn on USB debugging. Once I did that, I downloaded and ran a remote control app that I could sideload with ADB and set up what I wanted to run there. So at least I got ONE working. But the other one which has no touch input working at all, I'm just hitting a brick wall with that one.
Is there no way to install a custom rom with a non-functional screen?
Similar problem
Hi Dishe, did you find any solution to this problem. I'm in a similar situation but worse since my phone was encrypted and some points does not work on screen. If you've find any alternative please let me know.

Have you tried BT mouse?
Unfortunately the device cannot boot up since it is encrypted, so cannot make any connections.

Can you format the partitions through TWRP and upload the new ROM?
Or try the following:
fastboot format userdata
Thanks for your concern. Meanwhile, I've installed the stock rom via fastboot cli and phone works now. I've lost all my data and touch panel is nonresponsive on the right side of the screen but at least I can make calls now.
Anyway I need to replace either screen or the phone itself.

Replacing the screen may be unprofitable. It is better to buy BT mouse and use the N4 for special tasks. Anyway, you yourself decide.
