Using Apps2SD>How Do You Know When Updates Come Out For Apps?

I just wiped my phone and see all of my apps there because I installed them before to my sdcard.
But when I go to the Market, they are no longer in "my downloads." So... how do I know if an update comes out for them?

I reccomed reinstalling all your apps as you may have an issue with running them properly. If you paid for an app you can download it again and they will show up in your "my downloads" atrackdog is a 3rd party program that will check for up dated versions of your apps by using a p2p like protocal. It works for apps that you have that are not on the market like wireless tether and g-arcade.
But really reinstall all your apps. Use atrackdog. You can manage them from there.

Just wondering... Won't this happen every time I wipe then? The apps still show up in the "drawer" where all the apps usually are, just not in the marketplace. So... if this does happen everytime you wipe (the phone, ), then what's the whole point of apps2sd? Please clarify. Thank you.

The point is to free up the phones internal memory and keep it from lagging when the free memory gets below 20mb. Also a sdcard class 6 is slightly faster than the internal memory. Besides would you rather have 80 megs total to download programs or 500 megs?I wouldn't want to have to uninstall last.tm to play a game

I get that... but... if I wipe the phone, the apps will show up again once I put the new rom on it. However, there's no way to check if the apps have been updated by the developer since your downloads no longer show up in the market's "my downloads." So... Is there a way to fix that or a way around that..?

Currently there is no known workaround
Use atrackdog. Its available in the market. It won't auto notify you. Personally I run it every few days and it works great. If an update is available you can go directly to the programs market page and install the update.
Edit: you can always reinstall them

start all over i guess.. i do this all the time just to try a rom
format Fat32/Ext2 both it will format installed apps.. ur paid apps will be there regardless

I did this (but didn't start downloading apps yet) and for internal storage in settings>sdcard/storage, it shows internal storage free space is 840mb. Is that normal? Its just reading my ext3 partition as the internal storage,right? I did NOT set up apps2sd files or anything yet, but when I installed one app I looked at the free space again and it went down under "internal storage" instead of sd card. That would be normal EXCEPT for the fact that the internal storage free space is showing 800 something megabytes...

Its a bug in the build. As long as you have a ext2-3 partition. Any Rom that is a2sd enabled should see it automagically.
You did nothing wrong. Install any app and look in your system/sd/app folder and see if it is there. If its a paid app? Check system/sd/app-private

I recommend using the app -BackUp For Root Users- before wiping and flashing a new rom. On the second page is an option to backup and restore your Market Database file. I assume you can probably back up the same file using Terminal but I'm no expert on it, nor do I know the location of the Android Manifest file. If you save this file and restore it after a fresh install it will restore your My Downloads section in the Market and thus show you when updates are available.
As for currently, you'll have to reinstall your apps from the market first.

Using app2sd but get a Low On Space message after installing apps?

Why is this? My app2sd space is 300+mb but why it seems like my apps installed in my phone memory?

A2SD doesn't move the entire app to the SD card, only part of it. I believe that if you are root, there is a method known as A2Ext which makes use of a partition the user makes on the SD card and treats that partition as if it were part of the internal memory, thus making it unnecessary to use A2SD. Can someone with more knowledge on this topic clarify this?

i've had the same problem for the last 6 months, never been able to fix it. I have 20 mb internal storage left, and a2sd is definitely working (partition shows up in Titanium Backup, and i have a LOT more apps than would fit normally on internal). Someone recommended I move my dalvik-cache to sd, never tried it, but I'll look at it soon.

Ive tried typing a2sd cachesd in terminal emulator. But my phone memory are still decreasing after i install sniper vs sniper online from 30mn to 20mb. And now the Low On Space message are back on my notification bar.
And yes, i use darktremor app2sd.
Other suggestions of what to type in the terminal emulator?

You guys definitely need to move the dalvik cache to SD. I forget the exact term to type into terminal emulator but I think there is an a2sd app available on the market which you can use to do it. Its called A2SDGUI

I have installed it. It says my dalvik cache are on sd-ext. Other suggestions?

I had a similar issue..not sure if my solution will work in your case, but worth a shot:
In Root Explorer, go to the "/Cache" folder
Delete all the "downloadfile-(number).apk" files
See if that fixes it
It seems as though the marketplace gunks up that folder whenever it's updating an app, or something along those lines.

I have the exact same issue. I'm always hovering around 20MB

(Help) Insufficient Storage Error!

I have 500MB left and whenever I'm trying to update/install apps from the Play Story it gives me this error!
I tried clearing the dalvik-cache which is like 450MB but it force closes the whole system and apps!
After rebooting... the dalvik-cache is still there! I'm guessing that it's rewritten itself...

I think dalvik cache rewrites itself after it's wipe

Where do you have only 500mb left? Meaning /data/media or /cache (not /dalvik-cache).
Try going into Setting>Apps> Gallery, Playstore, video player, music player and wiping the Cache there. Gallery is a cache hog, so is Browser and Playstore.
Once you get that cleaned out, you should be able to download something from the market. I suggest Cache Cleaner NG. It is a cache cleaner that you can set to run everyday, week, month. I have mine set to run every morning before I wake up so my tablet is fresh and clean and ready to use.

I have 500MB left from 16GB (Internal Storage) and for some reason it's 300KB now!
I cleared all the cache from the recovery...

happened to me before. reflashed and it fixed. should have use root explorer to check which directory is used.

So now I have 400MB on the internal storage and I've cleared all the cache!
What should I do next?
The error is still there!
I can't even install apps to clean my system!

Clearing cache from recovery is not the same. Go into those apps and wipe them there.
Also, take look in /data/log and see if anything is in there. I just read about someone yesterday that had 11gb of useless entries in there. If there is anything in that file, just delete it (it isn't needed) and the set the permission to User-R and the rest blank and you would get those files anymore.
If all else fails, just delete something from your internal that you can replace later on from your PC (like some music or video) and that way you'll clear out some space to download a cleaner from the market.

Yeah... I checked all the apps and cache was deleted!
There's no "log" at all!
Also why would I need to delete something from my internal?
I deleted a lot from downloads...

Your internal and /data/media are the same thing. If you said that your internal is almost full and you are getting the error,....

But I deleted a lot of stuff! and now I have 400MB!
400MB should be enough to install an 800KB app!

Just trying to troubleshoot here man. Use a file explorer and look around to see if anything sticks out.
Might be time to do a factory reset and clean house (as a last resort) unless someone else has any ideas.

You need to have at least 512MB on your internal memory to be able to instal more programs. There is no fix for that.

I've deleted a lot of stuff and apps and now I have 1.2GB an I installed couple of apps successfully!

He is correct, 512 is the limit, you will also notice the system slows ALOT after this point, I like to use my MicroSD for alot of things for this reason.
Also glad I read the 'log' tip, I had a 600Mb log just sitting there. X.x

I get this insufficient space error when titanium backup runs a scheduled backup. I have 18gb free and when I manually do a backup it works like a charm. Odd behavior. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions; just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

I do use a 16GB microSD BUT the problem is that I have 10GB of apps/games! -_-

Try Apps2SD or a similar app.
I know for sure that the huge amounts of resource files used by games like Shadowgun and GTAIII can be stored on the MicroSD, freeing alot.

Probably /data is on the verge of running out of available inodes, do you have a lot of small files on it?

Note: I am NOT referring to the /system directory. I'm referring to a section of memory on my internal storage literally labeled "System data". See the first attached screenshot.
I noticed earlier today that I have way less space remaining than I should. I used DiskUsage to look at my internal memory, and a ~3GB chunk of it is taken up by something labeled "System data". It doesn't let me view this data and I can't figure out where/what it is. It's always listed as "other" when I view the used space in Solid Explorer or Airdroid. What is this space, and how can I reclaim it? My storage numbers also don't add up.
Stock rooted 4.2.1, 16GB.
Edit: I think it might be due (for the most part, at least) to CWM backups. As stated in ROM Manager: "In Android 4.2, backups are placed in secure directory, inaccessible to other apps." This was also speculated in a few other threads I found.
Edit 2: I deleted one of my 2 backups and the space used by "system data" was cut nearly in half, so I'm pretty sure it is the backups. However, the space used is not exactly the same as the size of the remaining backup, so maybe there are a couple other smaller things contributing to it as well.

Well the name of it is usually a hint... its the "System data" of your Android System.
You get it back when you delete it...
Unfortunately the phone wont boot anymore because it wont have a system on it...
No idea why you have 3 GBs, CM10.1 only has 0.5GB, I guess you use stock.

I was under the impression that system data was stored on the other ~3GB that I don't have access to (16GB - 12.96GB out of the box).
Are you saying that I'm now losing more space to stuff I have no control over? And if so, is there a way to figure out what is using so much space?
And yes, I said in my post that I'm running stock rooted 4.2.1

Assuming that Ivan Volosyuk's (the developer of DiskUsage) post in 2010 is still correct...
System data consists of several things:
1. Unpacked dalvik bytecodes corresponding to your installed apks. If you install app on external storage, it still consumes space on your data partition.
2. Crash dumps stored in tombstones directory.
3. Any other data or settings android store on your device.
This data is hidden and DiskUsage can't easily identify how much space each of this consume. Usually (1) consumes most, so if you want to cleanup some space you may want to delete apps on external storage.

16GB is unformatted storage. (Usually counted with 1000 bytes =1kbyte.)
You will loose storage for formatting (1024B=1kB), then there is the system.
That is also counted in the "16GB".
the system also needs some more space for cache etc.
With root you can view it, see the attachment for what I have there.
As you said you have root, why can't you view it?

Yes, you have misunderstood me. Look at the DiskUsage screenshot I posted in my original post. I'm not referring to the /system directory, I'm referring to some directory called System data that shows up on my internal storage, but it only shows up in DiskUsage. The space is shown as used in file browsers (such as Solid Explorer), but I'm unable to view what is actually taking up the space.

99.99999% sure it's your backups, as you edited your OP to show. No such space hog exists on my 8GB N4... 5.67 GB total space, currently have 4.09 GB free... bone stock 4.2.1

That's definitely a large part of it. I just deleted one of my two backups and the "system data" space was cut in half. It's still not exactly the same size as the remaining backup, but perhaps there's some other stuff in there as well.

But the other guy is right, Backups of custom recoveries are are stored there.

Same issue
I find the same directory "System Data" but it is in system directory, data even in the sd card, i got a rooted Huawei y200 and i need free space but how can i gain some space? if these "System data" goes from 5mb to 70mb that in my device is critical cause it have a limited space memory.
Even a clear the applets used by busybox using this file found in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1853419, works fine but only give me some kbs, so i want to try with this.
I will appreciate your help.

yeah i got installed some biggest games up to 45mb but they are in the ext partition with their dalvik and libs apps bigguest than 4mb on sd and i alredy done a cleanup of stock apps and provider apps, i tested many apps and later uninstall it and clean with sd maid, but I'm newbie and i dont know if some files still keep in memory after that or if this "System data" is like an recycle bin or something like that.

look in the android folder in your storage, it has a data and obb folder. thats where your "system data" is. you can look and see what it contains. for me it has some of my big game data, my music that i store on the phone for google play music, and other such stuff

I did it, and only found the data folder with media, maps and other with up to 2mb size between the 3 folders and no obb, where else can i search?

have you emptied your cache(s)? it can take a lot of space if not emptied every so often. also, the browser cache.

btw, are you sure your android folder only takes up a few mb's?? mine takes 3.4gb..

Try looking in /data/media/ and checking them folders.
Don't check the 0 folder as that is your sdcard

I clean cache 1 or 2 times a day for the same reason no empty space and the cache & data partition share this free memory for sure because always have the same amount and only are 15 to 20mb, the android folder is in \HWUserData\Android and \sdcard\Android both have the same files custom.dat, data folder and inside this 3 apps folder com.cooliris.media(52kb), com.google.android.apps.maps(1.07mb), com.google.android.apps.translate(24kb) and a file .nomedia.
Sorry for cant put some screenshoot but wont work fine the app and i dont understand the sdk method

you dont need any broken apps for screenshots.. its native to your phone
power button + volume down takes a screenshot, hold them down for a second or two.

I cant did it, wont work or this device is a diferent way, but i find an trial app that work...

Link2sd is not fullfilling my all needs.. After getting 190 mb internal full.. I want more.. Plz tell me any rom with this facility.. Or any tweak or technique?? I badly need it..

Make a partition of SD card and link apps to SD
Just Google how to link to SD
U will get hundreds of results

jonny789 I would love to know how you managed that if you are properly using Link2SD - just how many apps have you got installed?!
If you partition the SD using CWM recovery and choose 1024mb and 0mb at the two options (after backing up all data to the pc of course!) then reboot the phone when you open Link2SD it should ask you to confirm the type (EXT2/3/4 or FAT etc) - I pick EXT3 or 4 cos sometimes one won't work and I get an error so just use the other.
You will now have a second (hidden) partition and if you set your default save location to "External" all the apps you install will go to the main partition on the SD card. From there you can move them to internal storage (widgets, system apps like keyboards etc) or (preferably) link files to SD which will move a good chunk of the data to that hidden partition.
I have never come even close to using that 1gb of extra app storage and my internal memory is currently 61% free (73.04mb used, 117mb free). Of course lots of games and apps work just fine from the external storage anyway so you can just leave them there instead of linking them - really it is up to you.
The other way to use link2SD to free up internal memory is the system apps - you can uninstall a fair few of these to free up system memory which you can then use by converting non-system apps to system ones - this moves them from the "internal memory" to the "system memory" and hey presto you have more internal available. NOTE: Uninstalling system apps can bugger up your phone - search and read about it before you do this!
If you have already tried all of this then I apologise and humbly ask you to post a list of your installed apps so that we may all wonder at just how you managed to use all that internal memory lol
