[Q] weird storage problem when downloading - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

i'm having an issue where even though i have 8gb internal storage free, my phone won't download/update anything due to 'insufficient storage space.' i think i rooted by manually placing files and installing supersu. a few months later i first this problem right after syncing 2.5gb of music to internal storage via media player. i've tried deleting all the music, and right after i still couldn't install. so i was looking for stock mja rom to unroot and try again. can't find one however hard i look. another weird thing is that my total internal storage is just under 10gb. shouldn't it be near 16? anyway, if nobody has an answer to the problem maybe someone has a full stock mja rom hidden away somewhere?
edit again - mk5 would probably do as well. i've found it various places but i haven't found a single working download link.

First off, don't install MK5 it is for a different version of the S4.
Second, you can find MK2 in the development thread or NAE which is the newest version for our phone and upgrades you to kit kat. Look for a thread from Random45 for both, 2 different threads, and download the one you want, I recommend jumping all the way to NAE for best results.
Third, listed phone memory in the specifications and actual available memory are 2 different things. The system, android and apps use almost half of your phones memory.

yeah my mistake. but the mk2 link is the rare pokemon i was after. i'll give it a shot and see if it fixes my problem. i've been screwing with phones for a little bit but i'm far from good at it, so i'm scared of jumping to nae atm. thanks also for the insight about the 'total space' seeming off. i didn't know what all it included. due to the nature of my problems, i wanted to include any information that might be relevant even if it's not really. the only help the sprint guy could give me was 'i think it might be (insert thing that they don't support).'

[Q] Error formatting data on CM7 install

Newbie here - used search feature, searched across forums. Did not find my problem addressed.
Putting CM7 on wife's NC 1.2.0. Followed huskermania's steps exactly. Everything installed fine until I got to the part where I selected format data. Then I received message, "error formatting data!" Everything stops right there and I have to power the unit down.
Re-downloaded the file twice - went through the complete process two times across several different times so as to avoid frustration causing more trouble! Using a Sandisk 8g class 4 card.
Using 7zip, cm7.0.3, and win32diskimager, and google add-ons, downloaded as directed by the husker dude.
In one section of his video, Huskermania moves files to the mSD - his files are shown as yellow folders. Mine show up as a small stack of books. When I look at the properties of my files, they are winrar zip archive files.
Please help! I'm so close!!
Thank you,
Jim
I believe your issue has been addressed more than one, maybe not exactly the same but pretty close.
Anyway, your NC is v1.2.0, often called "blue dot" which B&N decided to change the partition mapping, used to be 1GB /data & 5GB /media in v1.1, now be 5GB /data & 1GB /media in v1.2.0.
If you don't have a bootable uSD card with CwM Recovery 3.2.x.x or above, it will give you that error "cannot format /data". However, in my specific case, I did have the issue but my NC actually continued to next step, not hung and no need to force reboot.
I suggest you get the newer CwM (v 3.2.0.1) and give it a try again.
Votinh,
Thank you for your reply. As I learn, I am finding that sometimes I don't understand what to ask to find the solution!
I will try this today and report back.
Thank you again,
Jim
Wait!
I checked the version of the file I had used to install cwr and it is 3.2.0.1 - the same file that I was encouraged to try. To be more precise, it is "recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.1-bravo.
So, I'm still stuck.
HELP!
Thank you,
Jim
Can't offer anymore help, m8 but I don't think you should be panic.
If I were you, I would try to re-partition/re-format to 1GB /data 5GB /media, then using CwMR v3.0.2.8 and try again.
Great! Now, can you tell me how to do that?
Thank you,
Jim
I would suggest reading This first. Important info if you are going to muck around in the internal memory partitions.
Then I would go Here and see if this will help.
If not, This, This, or This might be your next best steps as far as reading and/or trying.
Also, This Sticky could shortcut you to the solution you need.
All these links go to XDA threads here in the Nook Color forums. They aren't all the recovery threads, but most of the more recent ones that could help you.
I haven't had to deal with what you're trying to handle, but this should be a great start/solution to solving your problem.
It's gonna take some reading and absorbing to comprehend what you're trying to accomplish, given the level familiarity you seem to have with your device and it's internal file structure.
(I mean no slight by this, the fact that you are here trying to learn and figure out your issue says much - welcome to the community btw )
Tcandroid,
Thank you for your input. I solved the problem by following votinh directions about partitioning. I'm finally up and running cm7!
Two concerns remain:
1. Do I need to worry about OTH updates from barnes and noble messing up my efforts? My hunch is no, just want to make sure. If so, how do I turn that off?
2. Can I over clock to 950 with what has already been installed, or do I need to download and install something else?
Thank you all so much!

This put a smile on my face, i'm glad to hear you got your issue resolved.
Nothing worse then having a wonderful piece of technology right in your hands that you can't use.
I have no doubt you are going to have a blast with it.
Cruise through the 'themes and apps' subforum here in Nook Color Forums, and you'll find some gems that are out there in the market.
I am not sure about the answers to either of your questions, but I do know that:
Some people have had to do some funky things to block B&N updates, and there have been conflicting answers on this. Again, only have seen in passing - so not sure what the whole story is here.
B&N doesn't push updates that often, so it's likely you have some time to figure this out.
I see people mentioning overclocking to 1200 a lot, so 950 shouldn't put too much stress on your machine. Depending on what version of CM7 you are running, you shouldn't use an external app to overclock. I've been using mine at the standard 800 and can play games like Samurai 2 (with chainfire installed) and it's no problem for the machine.
If your CM7 version provides you overclock settings, use those and not an outside app like SetCPU.
Some random info gleaned from browsing through this forum. Not too specific in addressing your query, yet maybe helpful in your continuing Android education.

I help many people in many threads and tend not to remember the OP's original issue, so I have to re-read again
Firstly, congrats to you, do enjoy the NC running CM7. I bet by now, you are not a noob or newbie anymore, experience learnt.
Secondly,
1. since the NC is running CM7 ROM now, you don't have to worry about anything from B&N, even their new release probably won't be as good as the CM7.
2. by default, CM7 comes with kernel that can be overclocked to 925MHz (at least true on the v123 nightly build, not sure the latest) and again, it runs at 800MHz by default. You can set it under ??? (not on top of my head now and I don't have the NC in front of me, will update later).
If you want to run faster than 925MHz, you must install Dalingrin latest work - build on 06302011. Be sure download the "emmc" version since you run the CM7 off the internal memory.

Lost functionality - unable to register - no wifi

Hello, I have a B5510, and had managed to root and install link2sd to free up some space on my internal memory even though I had reduced the phone's applications to the "basic essential".
I noticed that even by moving apps with link2sd, the free internal space was not increasing and was getting an error with the dalvik-cache. I tried to move the dalvik-cache to the sdext2 partition since that is where link2sd was looking for it, however accidentally removed it. Unfortunately with it I must have removed also the links to the apps on the sd card and was left with only a handful of useless applications.
After trying to find a solution for that, it seemed that the only option I had was to do a factory reset, which I did. Despite having regained access of the google market application, I am unable to log onto the internet / wifi, and register my samsung phone. The phone seems to be continuously on standby at "obtaining ip address...". If I try to set a static ip, it seems like the device is connected to the wifi but it actually isn't, or at least, I can't register it to find out since my only application with access to the internet is google market.
I don't know whether the loss of functionality is due to having removed the dalvik-cache or some samsung related applications like samsung apps. In any, I wish I could find a way to restore my phone to what it was before. I thought that maybe I could flash cyanogenmod but didn't find a version for my phone. However I really don't wish to remove the stock OS and would like to restore it as is. Do you guys have any suggestions, experiences, or any helpful advice? I really don't know what to do. I asked for help to samsung but I don't know whether they'll help since the device is rooted.

My suggestion would be to use Odin to flash your original firmware onto your handset as per this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678568
If you cannot find the correct firmware in that thread (most likely as the files have not been converted it seems...huh!) then post in this thread and ask Doky73 very very nicely to convert the firmware files for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678568
You will need to know what firmware you are currently running - you can probably check yourself on sammobile to see if that is available, once you know the stock for your phone you can search google - it may already be out there converted and ready to go!
Once that is flashed delete everything off the SD card and format and repartition it again then start afresh - good luck! :good:

Hello stokey and thanks for your quick suggestion! I've been looking all over the website trying to understand and apparently the best solution would be to flash the firmware with odin 1.85.
I've found the details of my firmware being the Italy version:
Code:
HIDSWVER B5510XXLF3/B5510ITVLF1/B5510XILE1/B5510XXLF3
ANDROIDVERSION 2.3.6
BASEBANDVERSION B5510XILE1
KERNELVERSION 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #103
BUILDNUMBER GINGERBREAD.XXLF3
and it seems I also found a download from sampro.pl
I'm hoping this goes well because it seems like I've only managed to take the situation from bad to worse so far! If you have any experience with odin, do you believe the phone (wifi especially) should work correctly after flashing?

Ok, I've downloaded a stock firmware corresponding to my original IDs, split it up with Ordinatrix and flashed it with Odin and it worked! It's back as new! Thanks a lot stokey and everyone for your very helpful threads, I thought my phone was good as dead!!

Galaxy S4 LTE (i9505) - Issues After Upgrade to 4.4.2

Hi!
Just a few hours after upgrading to 4.4.2 (OTA official) I started to notice some "flaws" in the new OS. Of course there are lot´s of new good things too, but wouldn´t be better if we could eliminate some of the flaws too?
That´s why I´m creating this thread - with the purpose of exchanging experiences regarding the issues and solutions found in order to improve 4.4.2 usability.
I´m starting by sharing my experience with one of the most annoying drawbacks (at least in my opinion): the way external SD card is being used. 4.4.2 simply doesn´t allow data exchange between user installed programs (and data) and external SD card. I´m an user of FX File Manager (in my opinion one of the best file managers I ever seen).
When I opened for the first time in the new OS, the following message appeared: "Your SD Card may now be read only. This device is running Android 4.4 or later and appears to have both an internal storage area and external storage. Google imposed new restrictions in the Android 4.4 KitKat Update: applications that you install yourself ar no longer allowed to write to the "secondary external" storage (the MicroSD card). Applications installed by Google, the device manufacturer, and/or your mobile carrier ar exempt from this restriction. Only applications you choose to install are restricted. Some devices may not enforce this restriction, and other may have a means of disabling it. If you find yourself unable to write to your external SD card, please contact either your mobile carrier or device´s manufacturer support. This problem can be worked around if you have superuser access. Please refer to websites/forums related to your specific device for information."
Awkward!!!
I tried to move some files from my internal download to external SD card and no transfer was possible...
After searching for some workaround, the only way I could manage this situation was by installing ES File Explorer, which found a way to overcome this limitation for file transfer. Of course it solves the issue very partially, since no other programs (including photo / film software) will be able to overcome this problem.
I invite everyone who have/had an issue with 4.4.2 to use this as a way to exchange information, creating a single thread that will make easier to find issues and solutions (if available).
Fixing in general section. It was bug in leaked version but never thought they didn't fix it in OTA version? Flash 3rd kernel would pretty much solve problem I guess. But either way needs root access which means probably avoid warranty due to KNOX
来自我的 GT-I9505 上的 Tapatalk
1. Worse battery management than JB
2. More lagging in games and UI
Generally much ado about nothing imho
I am not installed yet the 4.4.2 update in my GT-I9505 because my carrier sure be the last one to adjust the base to post the update. (Venezuela - DIGITEL).
Regarding some of your issues, particulary the access to the SD Card, I recently read in one post on Questions section with two alternatives to activate the access to the card.
Check it and let us now if reallly working before the rest of the members take the adventure to install the 4.4.2 Kit Kat version.
Good look
what's up igruberger
I use X-plore on my S4, I can transfer files but I cant read newly transferred Mp3's from my external sd since kitcat 4.4 why has this stupid restriction being put in place!!!!! royally pissed off!!!!! and are you aware of any work around yet?? its not the phones manufacturer that can fix the problem, its the android software developers as its a software issue not hardware.
Problem whit my LTE
after the update i could not receive 3G or H or H+ or LTE only Edge someone know how to fix this i'm living in Belgium my carrier is Proximus
build I9505XXUGNF1
Baseband-version I9505XXUFNBA
Thx in advantage

[Q] Lost files after upgrading to CM.

Hey all,
I upgraded from TW to CM a while ago and I lost some files, I've been reading about the duplicated files for multiuser support and such but i haven't figured out how to recover the data. I know for a fact that the data from TW is taking up space because the "Total Space" on the phone shows as 23.40GB when its a 32GB phone.
I am running CM11 4.4.4 right now and I kind of want to get those files back.
Here's how "Storage" looks:

Go to a repair shop & let them JTAG to retrieve the data.

You are meant to do a CLEAN FLASH of a custom ROM on top of a different ROM. Losing files is natural.

Need Christmas Miracle, Trying to Root Encrypted Note 3.0 to Recover Deleted Files

Hello,
Last week 16 Gb of photos and videos (the last 3 years of my life) suddenly disappeared with only the last 6 pics I took in the gallery app. Stupidly I did not back anything up. I realize that the data is still probably on the phone, however to get to this I need to root the phone. The phone is running 5.0 Lollipop and is encrypted because I had to instal mobile iron. for my job. I have tried Kingroot, Kingoroot and several other methods but keep failing. I have not decrypted the phone as I believe this will make the data inaccessible unless there is some way I can get the encryption key off the phone. Any advise of method to use to root or how to extract these files given the current state of the phone would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Sean

Post a screenshot of file systems,DCIM especially and if using microsd to see where data went.Possibly root is not needed.
Where did the files went?
In case of root i suggest using ODIN software and flashing twrp.tar file. (just in case u havent tried that already).

I am not using a microSD
From what I have read the disappearing of photos and videos randomly occurs to some people on the Note 3 and the file data if not overwritten is still present. XDA wont post let me a post a link but there are several threads elsewhere on this issue.
XDA also wont let me attach photos until I have 10 posts. Ill see if I can bump this to do so.
Please don't bump multiple times. Bump once in 24hrs.
Have patience. XDA is a global forum so every member is with various time zones.

You must Odin back to 4.4.4 to root.
I would make sure those photos weren't backed up after all. If you just use google+ for example they are backed up by default.
