[Q] Force 4G/LTE Mode - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

My house is apparently in between a 4G & 3G tower. I can very rarely pick up 4G, but I'm looking for a method or app that will force the phone to only connect to a 4G tower. Is that possible? Thanks!

So I've actually been doing the same thing. Using my hotspot it will boot me off of whatever is connected when it auto switches from 3g to 4g.. Here's what I do. From dialer enter ##data#
You should see view and edit. Click on edit and it will prompt you for your MSL (if you don't have it there are some apps on play store that will provide it) Once youve entered it scroll all the way to the bottom and click on "more", then click HDR/1X selection, then finally click LTE Only mode. That's it! You won't be able to make/receive calls while is on but when you're done just switch it back. Hope this helps
Sent from my GalaxYs4

Forcing it does not guarantee it'll connect either. You could end up with no service or dropped 4g with no notice. It's a pain if you're downloading a movie that can't be picked up where it left off. Rapidgator etc.

[Q] Disable 1x Data

I use a lot of data for content streaming. At work I have low signal (1 bar) and sometimes the networks changes to 1x Data. (Yes, I know the epic doesn’t indicate it, but I can tell by the reduced bandwidth and about 3 second drop of all data when the switch is made.
I’ve noticed that if someone calls while on 1x data, the calls go straight to voicemail, it does not ring at all.
Is there a way to set the phone to 3G data only? And if there is no 3G available, drop the data connection?
Short recap: I Want 3G Data only. If not available, no data connection at all. Wi-Fi is not an option at my office nor is 4G.
Thanks!
You're going to need your 6 digit MSL (master subsidy lock) code.
Go to phone, ##DEBUG# (##33284#), enter MSL, scroll down to Others, HDR/1X Selection, EVDO Only Mode, Ok.

is this setting like the old school days 6700/6800, where as if you set/force your phone to "EVDO Only Mode", you will lose Text/Voice since those only work on 1x.
Can't really tell, never left my Epic on EVDO only mode (don't need/want to). The Mogul (6800) is one phone i really don't want to remember.
Doesn't hurt to be a guinea pig though in this particular case..
lol...yea those setting were nice if the phone would bonce back and forth 1x/EVDO and you needed EV to stick and did not care about phone calls or also if you were downloading a big file and did not want to be disconnected by a call 8)

How to force LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) or any other Preferred Network Type.

Hello, I have no problem receiving an LTE signal on BCE (Canada) through the Phone Info Menu. I can select any of the preferred network types including LTE, LTE/GSM, CDMA, LTE/GSM/CDMA but it won't stay. Every day I have to go back into the menu and it reverts back to the first selection "WCDMA".
Does anyone know how to force this so it stays on LTE/GSM/CDMA. So it will stay on the LTE-enabled network unless there is a loss of signal and it reverts back to HSPA? It does this automatically when "LTE/GSM/CDMA is selected, but again reverts to CDMA within a day usually.
I did some searches here, but 99% of what comes up is just people asking how to enable LTE or if their network gets it?
Any ideas? Maybe some sort of macro thing.
Regards.
Add this line in build prob
telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1
Save
Reboot
Now in settings/more/mobile networks u will have an option to choose and it will stick. U have to add the line every time u flash ROMs.
But I keep iron WC DMA/gsm for better battery speed is OK on h+
Thanks for the helpful reply man. I haven't edited a build.prop yet, so Ill have to check it out.
Alright thats all done now, works like a charm. Like that I have the option now either way. I typically stick to WCDMA/GSM when on the road or at work where LTE is spotty, but on days off for around town I would rather just be on LTE as I usually just looking up something quick when Im shopping or something.
Thanks again.

Nice
I keep it at LTE, it does have less bars but quality is same for me, speeds are amazing. Also 4G is only data, not voice, so when u have an active call it will change to 3G.(but that's not the phone it's the network)
don't forget to do it again if you flash new ROM, also Tethering WiFi won;t work, there is a fix but it's complected for me, so I just go to W/G if I need to share connection.
So, my Nexus 4 shipped today, and it'll be in my grubby little hands by tomorrow evening. I, unfortunately, can't activate it until March, as I have to wait for my Verizon contract to end, but I keep seeing this LTE stuff, with no real explanation. I do know that the Nexus 4 has an inactive LTE radio in it, but what's the use of activating it, if T-Mobile doesn't have LTE? Is this only for the AT&T users?

There are other threads dealing with who can access LTE in the USA. I am in Canada and on Bell.
I'm in Canada, using Fido. I activate the LTE on my Nexus 4. It works fine, but I'm not able to share internet with wifi hotspot.
I have Android 4.2.1 (latest OTA from Google).
There is a bug with this version or it's only because I activate LTE manually ?

what is the fix to get hotspot internet sharing with the Nexus 4 ? Do i have to had a APn for 3G and swith that it to share my connection ?
I'm with the original firmware. Android 4.2.1
process com.android,phone hase stopped working
i recently got a rom from revolt on my n4 and i switched cdma to lte gsm wcdma auto
i also went into build.prop and wrote down telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1. i went and to setting, more, mobile networks chose the correct setting. so now i got 4G. great i can make calls. GREAT. but i cannot receive calls...
need help with this. im really choked about this ROM
Even if I select "LTE/CDMA" in the Mobile network settings menu. The settings page keeps displaying "CDMA preferred".
Does this mean it didn't work? In quick settings, I see my mobile data connection as 3G Bell.
LTE only seems to work when using the *#*#4636*#*# trick in the Phone app.

Would you have by any chance the line for the built.prop to stick the setting to GSM Auto (PRL)?
TIA!

Thanks, but LTE doesn't work in my country, its always stick on lte/gsm/wcdma but it doesnt detect my gsm so i have to manually set it on GSM only but wont stick here every time i restart my phone i have manually set it on GSM only otherwise it wont detect my network
Any advice ?
How can I make "WCDMA Only" the default selection?
Where I Iive there is no LTE and the coverage of the service is quite poor, so the phone keeps jumping between E and 3G/H. I have to manually go into the phone app and select "WCDMA Only" is there a build prop tweak to make the "WCDMA Only" the default option instead of "WCDMA Preferred"?
Thank you.

Aah Crap ! Well thanks man saved me from buying on guess i will have to stick with my rezound for now then
fixed it
For everyone still searching for a solution to this problem, this worked for me. Go to phone information and turn your radio off. Then switch to LTE/GSM/CDMA then power down, DO NOT TURN YOUR RADIO BACK ON. Now remove your Sim card, put it back in, reboot and you should be good to go. DO NOT HGO BACK INTO PHONE INFORMATION OR ELSE IT WILL NOT STAY
If it still isn't connecting try fiddling around with your APN settings.

Force CDMA for Network Extender

I had a S3 before I bought the G2. I have a Verizon network extender at my house. I typically get 1-2 bars of 4G, and I had issues with call quality and dropped calls on the S3. With the G2 my 4G signal is about the same. I used an app call Phone Info on the S3 to force it into CDMA while I'm at home, which would give me full signal from the network extender. This app doesn't work with the G2. Any suggestions?

Did you try Settings> Wireless & Networks>More...>Mobil Networks> Network Mode> CDMA w/o EvDo?
Be Sure to Click Thanks
Mobile Networks/System Select (which I think is what you mean) doesn't have an option for CDMA only. Only LTE/CDMA.
I tried 3 or 4 other apps tonight, and none are able to access Phone Info to modify these settings. I'm lost here...

Thanks, but I tried and that doesn't work on Verizon.
Anyone else have any suggestions for me? I called Verizon knowing they probably couldn't help and I was correct.
i still haven't found an app that will work. Looking for anyone that may have another suggestion...

How to make 4g the dominant signal?

So I have been having this problem with my phone where even in areas I know there is a good 4g signal, my phone keeps wanting to switch to 3g. The only way I have found to force 4g is to make a phone call. Once I do that, 4g kicks back in. Is there any settings I can adjust(I assume this would be one of those hidden menu settings) so that my 4g will be the dominant signal that I get? I don't want 4g only but rather when I am in a 4g area, I just want to make sure I get 4 instead of 3. Rooted 4.4.2 sphL720 stock rom
You can do 2 things to help.
1. You can simply every time you get 3g go into airplane mode wait 10 secs and turn it off, when you reconnect you should get 4G
2. You can download an app called lte discovery and it has an option, where every time you get 3g it'll know and it'll automatically cycle to get 4G
There is also a way to do it through the device in the dialer, not 100% how to do it, but I know it scans more often for 4G but it also consumes more battery
GL ether way
Yeah I tried that airplane mode trick, its easier just to call myself to try to force it. Thanks for the reply I'll check into that other stuff!

Verizon users, lend me your ears!

I started out with USCC on this device. But last week I switched ourn lines over to big red. I noticed that big red forces you to use LTE, with no options under "cellular networks" to select CDMA. Here in Maine, LTE drains your battery 50% faster than CDMA, and data is wonky. It tends to be slower than CDMA, or at least feels slower because it is constantly switching between the 2 or hanging in limbo.
My phone was set to CDMA on USCC, and even after switching to Verizon, I'm still on CDMA. My question is, if I return to stock LP will it force me into LTE -with no choice of switching back to CDMA? So far, Marshmallow has been a huge disappointment on my phone.

Just go into hidden menu via dialer and force your phone into CDMA or LTE or whatever you want. It's simple really and will give you what you want.
Well, is there a "new to Verizon" guide somewhere? Verizon didn't tell me about the secret codes. I don't even know how to do an advanced prl update.
I should have clarified that I've only ever been on USCC. I've never used Verizon. But I do vaguely remember reading about a hidden dialer code now that you mention it. I'll look into that.

It's not a that they don't offer that 99% of the time you are better off on LTE so its good that phones prefer LTE. Most likely your other phone simply had that option not hidden unlike on Moto. So that wasn't a ussc feature

Agree to disagree. The data speeds are about the same here, but with the constant handoffs, LTE actually becomes slower and pages won't load because it's switching to 3G and back to LTE over, and over, and over. Plus the added battery drain off having 15-20dBm weaker signal, it's a no brainer. But maybe that's just in our less developed state.
The Samsung phone that I bought for my wife has no CDMA provisions, so it's not a Moto thing, it's a Verizon thing.
You can also download the thunder bolt lte on/off app and you have choices like CDMA auto prl. I use it to force CDMA only on my range extender at home.
Use shortcut creator to link to the hidden menu and your all set

This device doesn't run Verizon branded firmware at all. It's how Motorola provisioned the device to work. Like patt2k said you can change that via the hidden menu and you should be good to go, it won't look for LTE after that.

There seem to be many LTE on/off utilities in the App store. How did you pick this one?
I also have a Verizon Network Extender at home. I have trouble getting connected to it. I often have to reboot or turn the radio on/off to get my phone to connect to the Extender. I would appreciate any advice on how to get my phone to connect to the Extender more reliably.
It would also be nice if the phone would show via an Icon or screen that it is connected to the Extender. Right now the only way to know is to dial #48
EDIT: When I go into the Hidden Menu and select CDMA only, the phone temporary drops the LTE signal. However, LTE seems to quickly come back. Any suggestions on how to turn off LTE when I am home so that I force a connection to the Network Extender?
I can't get the hidden menu to switch from CDMA to LTE. It will switch temporarily, then drop the radio altogether forcing me to restart. Upon restart it's in CDMA only again. Personally, I'm fine without LTE. But I'm not sure why I can't get it enabled at all. I'd like to know I COULD have LTE if I wanted it. So I'm confused why it's stuck in CDMA

It worked with other Motorola devices in the past. CDMA only will fix your network extender issues.
You will have to set it back when you leave the house. Also it will go back to the default settings if you reboot. Works great for me.
