Iv been playing with my shield for awhile and have had an amazing experience, despite the obvious poor marketing of the product and unnecessary handicap nvidia has added in order to boost gpu sales with regards to streaming(I only buy nvidia graphic cards but it still should not be required).
The shield is the best handheld iv ever owned, I felt compelled to share my experience
1. created a virtual hotspot on my sony vaio duo 11 hd 4000 gpu(most laptops have dual band network cards built in) and connected shield. No router was necessary.(although a router would be a few frames faster)
Loaded Splastop thd gamepad
In gamepad mode you can just easily click any key on your shield and it registers on any game config menu on your pc!! that was awesome.
Played
Metro last night, loved it!
Borderlands 2, Worked Awsome! Im never going near my alienware M15x again. (used fullscaler to run games fullscreen 720p)
2 Loaded PPSSPP on my LAPTOP, streamed it to my shield!! Played Gta Liberty city, crisis core, god of war all full speed! And streamed perfect.
3. Played Fangz HD, Gangstar Vegas, Brotherhood of violence (gets better) all mapped with TinCore keys. Perfect experience.
Why the shield is better than my other devices in MY opinion.
a.Moga pro cannot pull any of this off due to the lag
b.My other devices could stream but needed the 360 controller to be attached to the pc
I felt compelled to say how much i love the shield so I wrote this, however Im very disappointed that Nvidia chose to force people to buy a new gpu to enjoy it when it can easily work with almost any Gpu. I have an Alienware M15x with a 560m which i did not use this time due to network issues.. however Im not sure if I want a new desktop. The hardware limitation seems artificial, still this is the best device iv owned.
My devices
xperia tablet z,iphone 5, galaxy s4 with moga pro
Ps vita, dsi
Hope splashtop THD comes to shield natively)
How did you get Splashtop THD working on your shield? When I look it up in the Play store, it says it's not compatible with the Shield. Really looking to see how this works, because I want to find some way to play Steam games on my shield and miracast stream them to my TV at the same time.
you have to side load the apk file which you can find online. it works great.

can get PPSSPP natively on Shield, works great apparently.
I know how you feel about the shield it's an amazing device with infinite possibilities for example you can play from DOS to PSP emulators you can play real PC games ,Android games , watch movies ,stream movies, browse the web, chat basically this device does it all
you should try Kainy is sometimes better than splashtop http://www.kainy.com/

I only wish I could stick in my sim card and use it as my AIO phablet/gamingconsole. Looking into a micro usb sim modem to possibly get to work.
Im going to try kainy, it looks a bit complicated to connect, I use splashtop thd because the mouse works perfectly on it, it feels its emulating a gamepad. the other splashtop personal is deliberately broken by the company when it comes to gaming because the mouse movement is way off and in most other games the mouse movement is impossible.
forgot to mention the battery life.. it lasts for hours n hours, I can stream all day!
Isn't Lag present ??
Is it almost the same lag you see (See video) & tell
I've taken a video of the same using Kainy.

Streaming from a pc is way smoother, Nativly PPSSPP cant play many games properly on the shield, God of war for example.

No, my lag is nothing like that even without a router, Make sure your laptop or pc has wireless N(you must have a wireless N card) enabled and you are using WPA2 encryption. (you need to use it for high speed access)
and
a. use splashtop THD, gamepad mode .. sadly you cant stream lower than 720p (so there maybe a slight lag barely noticeable)
b..Dont use the touchscreen to control games it wont work well.
c. when makeing a virtual hotspot, directly connect to your pc, do not connect to your router..

Haha yea Iv tried that it still doesnt give you the same feeling as the shield mainly because even the speakers are so good and the battery outlasts everything, but yes there is a flaw with the weight and screen size of the shield.
Iv updated ppsspp but I get 100% speed on pc when I stream to the shield. When I load it on my shield natively it runs around 60% to 65% im sure it will get there soon.
I just tried splashtop THD and Kainy is not even close to the nvidia streaming I didn't noticed lag in splashtop but image quality is poor same with kainy and that one lag as hell
there is no way to show people how much better is the nvidia streaming to the shield until they can see it in person the image is at least 90% of what you see in the computer is almost like you playing the game natively on the shield
More people need to mail splashtop to officially support the shield in the THD version, since the d-pad and left stick are pre locked to WASD
I'll try out how SplashTop does
And post a video if possible soon!

I'll be glad to make comparison videos if someone will be able to port the Shield streaming app to other device removing the chipset check
Splashtop 2 is the last version I used to stream. I will agree that the quality of the stream is very low in comparison to what I was actually on my pc.

Yes the compression quality between splastop personal and THD when hooked up nvidia gpu's is on a very noticeable level, Im not sure what they are doing with THD tegra to nvidia streaming but its got some sort of specific coding maybe someone can find out since it works with all previous gen nvidia cards.
I'd like to jump in with some newb questions:
If I download splashtop THD and combine it with Tincore, I can mimic using the shield game streaming? As in, I can play something like FFXIV from my computer to it and be able to control it properly?
THD is on sale right now 50% @ $9.99 Do I buy it even tho it isn't "compatible"?
Hello everyone! Seems like this is the only place on the web to discuss the mojo.
I've been trying to build a flawless XBMC/Emulation machine for quite some time now. I had previously been using a very powerful windows pc running xbmc with advanced launcher. However I found that there were just too many things that could go wrong. Too many scripts to write to combat the misshaps and overall it wasn't the best solution.
So I ordered an ouya. Now I have my Ouya hooked up to the tv and it runs xbmc fairly well. It also runs most standalone emulators quite well, such as the broglia ones. But when compared to my Nvidia shield the video output doesn't look as good for some reason, retroarch doesn't work nearly as well, theres no play store, no sd card slot. Now I got it for 79.99 with free shipping so I'm not complaining, it does much more than I ever expected it would for that price. But I wanted an experience to rival my shield, but permanently connected to my tv. So I ordered a Mojo when they announced ouya app support and the price drop.
It hasn't arrived yet but I'm getting anxious.
Current plans are to run TvLauncher as the main launcher. Or create a custom setup using something like zooper widget and nova launcher.
The main screen will feature XBMC, the ouya app (whenever its available) Gamestream (whenever it is available also), as well as Nostalgia (an ouya app) or some other emulator front end.
Possibly I will add youtube and netflix (if an hd version becomes available) to the launcher.
I've order a 1tb WD Passport to connect to the USB 3.0 port. This will be a rom and save location mostly. As all media playback will be done from my home server.
Also going to be using retroarch with crt shaders as the main emulator.
Roms as well as game saves will be synced between my shield and mojo via dropsync, so that when I exit the game on my shield I can resume where I left off seemlessly on the mojo and vice versa.
I will likely be making some videos of how it all works if I can get it working the way I want.
My question is, does anybody see anything glaringly wrong with my approach? Is there anything I'm missing? Any app that might work better than the ones I plan to use. Or any tweaks or hacks that I'm going to have to do to the mojo to do this kind of thing. Anything specific I need to figure out regarding the 1tb hdd I plan to use? Any input or interest would be greatly appreciated.
Hi and welcome to the MOJO side :silly:

You sound like a launcher fan, but it's really not essential, you might want to try MOJO without it just to see.
Experiment with the CTRLR in gamesmart mode (so you don't have to switch in/out of mouse mode).
the start button = mouse click

The USB 3.0 port is recommended for the BT4 dongle (which is need to use the CTRLR until kitkat comes out).
And MOJO has readonly access to NTFS and no access to exFat.
But rooting it and install (don't know the name) app fixes this, just go through the threads here, you'll find it (not many).

Nice! what a great idea!
The broglia emulators for ouya work fine, just need to remap the controls.
The official XBMC apk works well with CTRLR.
Ouya games don't map to the CTRLR very well.. some let you configure the controller, but most don't (find the thread).
So I wonder how ouya is going to fix that? I bet they wont and make the poor devs fix it :crying:
I recommend rooting it for full access to google play, and it's easy.
I can't see you having issues doing what you want, it'll work more or less like your shield only with a better controller and no setting up
Let us know how you go and looking forward to your videos :good:

There's an app to enable rw to ntfs or to exfat?
I'm hoping to run retroarch with custom borders and shaders (not graphically intensive ones, just crt style.) but retroarch has been giving me nothing but problems on my shield while i've been trying to get it working with dropsync. It was working fine just syncing the saves but now I'm having it sync roms as well and its causing all sorts of havoc.
As for ouya games, honesly i haven't played any but ittle dew. and that one i played for only 30 minutes. I've been using it entirely for .emu emulators and xbmc. Thats the kind of experience I'd like to bring across to the mojo but I will need a proper front end for the emulators. Is there anything resembling the ouya app "Nostalgia" currently available for the Mojo? The author of that app has mentioned a play store version but I fear it will be some time before that materializes.
EDIT:
Ok I think I've found it. The paragon app.
Will definitely pick that up when my mojo arrives.
So I've configured my shield with a folder called "dropsync" on the sd card. Everything in that folder is instantly synced to my dropbox and other android devices. I had retroarch synced but it's been giving me problems. The snes works fine but the core for GBC is a dog. So I decided to also sync all the saves from my other emulation apps. They're actually working better than retroarch so far. Going to load up dropsync onto the ouya tmrw to see how well save file syncing works between those two.
Drop sync is amazing. Also check out the thread here for folder mount. It is a great little app that will help with big games.
I too like gaming. Had the ouya and dunno what I'll end up using that for now since I have the mojo and like it more since it has play store access. Might just be a paperweight or travel companion tho honestly that's what I got the mojo for too.
I'm going to have to check out that launcher you mentioned too. Been looking for a cool launcher for the mojo to coincide with a console feel.
Also I use a moga controller with the mojo too. Works real well with games that support it better than the mojo controller.
Anyway I'm rambling lol

From what I've tested the ouya is the premiere low cost xbmc device on the market. I've tried the pivos and its horrible compare to the ouya and has no extra features. The black box costs more than an ouya and has terrible reviews.
My ouya will likely go to my mothers hdtv for xbmc purposes. She currently has a boxee box which is absolute garbage compared to the ouya and cost my more than twice as much.
I guess I need to do some more reading and possibly some YouTube watching to fully understand that xbmc is all about. Maybe then I'll be like using that app all the time

You and me both. I've downloaded the app to my MOJO and use it sparingly to watch the limited content I'm able to get to (all available elsewhere btw) using it. Most of the add-ons I've tried don't work. I've found it easier to download specific apps and/or bookmark network websites (then create a desktop shortcut) for content I'm interested in. Perhaps you intend use xbmc to watch content you already have stored locally? Maybe I need to study up on it myself to fully understand its utility.

Watching content stored locally is the point of XBMC. I have a 14tb home server with sickbeard (automatic tv show downloader) and couchpotato (same thing for movies.) It organizes all my files with a wonderful interface with posters and cover art and episode synopsis. It's how I watch all my television content. I don't stream (terrible quality usually) and I don't pay for cable or satellite service.

Thanks! A few years ago I used to do the same thing manually with Agent, but I have long since let my 3rd party Usenet server subscription lapse (ATT is my ISP now, I have no idea if they even provide access to Usenet anymore). It just became more trouble than it was worth. I don't have cable anymore either, and other than a few shows on AMC and Discovery Channel, I'm able to find everything I'm interested in watching. Hopefully I'll find a source for programming on those two networks.
I guess I'll have to check it out more tho don't really need to use it much since my pc is hooked up to my big screen anyway. Will Def use it when I am out of town for work tho. Thanks for the insight

Up until I bought the MOJO, I've had a PC connected to my TV since around 2001. I far prefer the MOJO for a multitude of reasons including its small size, no noisy fan, no spinning hard drive, near instantaneous boot, no bloated OS requiring constant update, availability of a huge amount of no/low cost software and excellent graphics capability. The fact that it is also a powerful gaming console with a BT4 controller is just an added bonus. Worth every penny of the $249 I paid for mine.
Wow

Dude you sound a lot like me and if you are be prepared to be disappointed. XBMC works great on the OUYA but I wanted a smoother experience from my movie collection. I have a synology 1812+ with (6 3Tb and 2 2TB HHDs) with my entire movie collection with files ranging from 5GB+ for 720p to 10GB+ 1080p DTS files and the ouya did a good job, especially with hardware decoding on xbmc v13, even the ouya xbmc version did a great job but they lost DTS support so I had to use an older version for most of my movies to play audio. The biggest problem is that on the Mojo xbmc doesn’t hide the navigation soft keys so that means you watch those three buttons on the bottom of the screen the entire time you’re supposed to be enjoying a movie, the only way to remove it right now is by rooting your madcatz mojo but that requires a USB a to a cable that most people don’t just have laying around. You can also cross your fingers and hope that the mojo gets 4.4 kitkat soon since that adds immersive mode which xbmc just recently added that allows the application to take on the whole screen without the navigation soft keys appearing. The improvements that I thought I would see are just not there to justify paying twice the amount of an OUYA. Don’t get me wrong I think the Mojo is a great box but it’s not worth twice the price for performance that, at least to me is not noticeable.
P.S. the mojo is quite when compared to the Ouya (Loud Fan)
The thing will be rooted before I do anything else. I'm sure it will be easy enough to remove the navigation buttons. Also Xbmc Gotham nightlies should have support for dts (though I don't have many dts files). Xbmc runs flawlessly on my shield so km expecting it will perform similarly.

I find it sad that Mad Catz M.O.J.O. has no DTS working in XBMC, when that is working on other Android TV Boxes (MeLE, VidON, and MINIX) for many mounts now, and also do not have the navigation buttons on the bottom of the screen.

I can confirm, HL2 is working on the TegraNote 7 with a MOGA Pro controller attached via Blutooth
Not working on Nexus 7 (2013) and Galaxy S5 (native and with GLTools).
has anyone tried it on a Tegra 3 Device? Ouya anyone?
Just ordered a Shield anyway but it won't arrive in the next 2-3 weeks. (Shipping from Hong Kong) ...
They ie.portal/half life 2 for tegra 4 are a waste of time for now on the mad catz m.o.j.o,they are not telling anyone next to the game icon on the list that they are only useable with android 4.4 kitkat, therefore i bet loads of these upcoming and current games are, also the shadowgun deadzone game i tried and says only for tegra 3 devices,it's a right @rse to list games but not tell you what they do/do not work on,bounty arms isn't working with the m.o.j.o controller either,so it does beg a big question that is why are mad catz selling the C.T.R.L as an android phone controller as a seperate item if the compatability is all but none existant in the current games, they really need to get to it and release 4.4 kitkat for the mad catz m.o.j.o and a controller compatability update to flash with software via the usb port under the batteres.
A friend of mine is supplying me with Portal from his Shied to test on the Mojo tonight. I will let you guys know if it works...I am very curious.
any chance for this to run on a non tegra device?

running kitkat and no luck on mali 400 gpu
so surprisingly borderlands 2 gets ported to the vita but we cant run HL2 on a snapdragon 801 ?????
hmmm seems like a driver hack should do the trick
The problem is that Nvidia worked on it and optimized it for Tegra 4.
I'm not sure whether it performs just an GPU ID check or it actually does require Tegra 4-only features/extensions.
I don't think we can get it to work on other devices without a wrapper.
I tried Half Life 2 on my Tegra Note 7, but my game crashes when i try to load the first level.
The main menu works fine.
I am using an EVGA Tegra Note 7, Android 4.4.2 and a Xbox360 Controller.
Any tips?

Sadly have to confirm this...
First part is working, but as soon as Freeman is fleeing from the Combine and the second part is loading it crashes.

Can anyone confirm if the crash is due to lack of RAM? Remember our Tegra Note 7s only come with 1 GB of RAM while the SHIELD and M.O.J.O come with 2 GB. It could be crashing because it couldn't load the entire level into memory.

Well half life 2 doesnt load maps like that. Its loads it section by sections so i seriously doubt they changed it for android to load the entire level that would require regretting alot of the engine. Online multiplayer games it will load the whole map but for the single player it did not thats why you got that loading bit while running or driving around.

Um.. maybe? I think it requires Android 4.4 too
I'm thinking about buying either an Ouya or a Mojo as an emulator machine but i have a few questions about the MOJO.
To make it simple.... I love the Ouya and it would be perfect for me, i only wish it was a little more powerful... (for more fps on PSP games and San Andreas in high quality etc...)
So can i expect the Ouya on MOJO to run like a real Ouya and even more? Or is it only partially working?
Is there any way to hide the navigation bar when running an app or will there be soon? (maybe a Ouya app update or something?)
What would you guys suggest?
I'm really torn between those 2, some advice would be greatly appreciated!

no not all ouya games are in mojo shop towerfall is not in the ouya everywhere shop
well i guess as long as all the emulators on Ouya work.... shouldn't be a problem sideloading any other app

Emulators and media is about all its use full for so ur in luck me man, however I have had massive issues regarding storage space which might restrict how many ROMs u could use. Tbh ur better off getting a reliable tablet and a TV out cable
well a good tablet is expensive and ressources are wasted on battery saving etc....
i'm probably going to get a MOJO, but only if i can get rid of the navigation bar while running an app...

I think there's apps that removes it after rooting it.. it doesn't bother me so I haven't checked.
Re ouya everywhere, people where saying the frame work crashes, it might have been fixed, I don't like ouya so haven't checked.
well ouya has got some really cool stuff for emulators, like the Nostalgia app regrouping all your emulators etc... and it's nice to change from the stock android, but the specs are really ****ty... anyway, i found some ways to hide the navigation bar and stumbled upon your website where you shared your thoughts about the MOJO while google-ing and it pretty much convinced me to buy one... the ouya won't last long with specs so low
MOJO or Fire TV
Should I buy a Mad Catz MOJO or Fire TV? I'm a android enthusiast and I own an OUYA. The Mad Catz MOJO would be a perfect device for me having all that power inside. Tegra 4 with 2GB of ram sounds impressive for a Micro Console not to mention the nice controller. Now I've noticed the Fire TV is able to install the Play Store which basically solves the problem of not having to buy all of my apps again. Fire TV from what I've seen is pretty powerful, but you don't get all that Tegra goodness. $99 plus controller vs. $199 with controller. We need more Mad Catz MOJO videos on Youtube because there are some more games I want to see running.
well you can install google play store on the MOJO and it's only 150$ now, plus you can install the Ouya App so you get the best of both worlds!
@Energizing, yeah the ouya 16GB compared to the MOJO is a no brainer IMO.
The Amazon fireTV compared to MOJO, could ague either way..
The biggest draw back on the mojo is not having kitkat, which means we're stuck on late 2013 game releases instead of having the newer games like shield1 has.

Been playing a bit of oldschool OpenArena (ouya apk version), I got GTA 3, just ran out of ideas, I'll do a video or two!
So this device apparently starts shipping tomorrow right? When it does can someone please download some emulators and try them out? I would like to especially see the performance of PPSSPP, the PSP emulator. I would be eternally grateful to you. If you have access to various Bluetooth controllers I would like to hear about the compatibility of those as well if possible
Yes, If this product can smoothly run some of the games I have downloaded, then I should be picking one up. I'm sure it going to be hard to download games with such limted storage, but hopefully someone can showcase some quality android titles. It basically has OUYA specs; however, with a more powerful CPU. I want to buy one, as it would be my first Nexus product. Some cool titles I would want to see runnig: MC5, GT racing as Asphalt 8 I've seen, and Need For Speed Most Wanted.
As a regard to emulators, It has 8gb of storage, good luck!

Yeah if this had a Tegra K1 chip in it I would've been there Day 1 no questions asked, but as it is standing I'd rather wait and see some impressions first.

I would hardly say the ouya's GPU compares to the G6430.

Yeah, definitely. It outscores the GeForce ULP in the Tegra 3 by 2x-10x depending on the benchmark, and specifically handles the higher resolution (like the 1080p at which these devices tend to run) much better. Given the fact that even the Ouya was able to emulate up through the N64 reasonably well I think that the Nexus Player will make a great emulation device.

I believe it was the Ars Technica review where they had the N64 emulator running on it flawlessly. Seems emulation will be great on this box (seemingly one of only a few strong points).

Oh man, thanks for the reply. I was looking to emulate PSP games more than anything but I guess up to N64 and maybe Dreamcast is fine as well.
I use my N64 and SNES emulators and they work great!! It runs better than my Xbox one which sucks at most things.
Here are some pictures of it on my TV using Super GNES and Mupen64
The pictures I took aren't the best but it runs great. You can map the buttons on the gamepad however you want which makes it great and my wife loves it
Just wanted to chime in here and say that it works perfectly fine with the Wii U USB adapter and a Wii U Pro controller. Just make sure the adapter switch is set on the Xinput setting

how many controllers does the adapter support at one time?
I'm using the PCE.emu and Neo.emu and they work fine. Only thing that makes me crazy is that sideloaded apps are too large for the TV display, some menu options are difficult to read. Does anybody know if there is a way to adjust the resolution for sideloaded apps so they fit the TV screen properly?

The listing on Amazon says that it supports up to 4 controllers with the 'direct input' mode, however I tried using the direct input mode and it seemed to not want to use the d pad and all of the buttons performed the same action. Using 'xinput' (I think this just emulates the Xbox controller input) everything mapped perfectly and all was well, the bad news is that it can only do 1 controller at a time using this method, so you'd need 1 usb adapter per controller. Also I have only 1 Wii U Pro controller so I don't have any way to test if multiple controllers even work with the direct input mode, it's worked perfectly with 'xinput' so I haven't moved it from there.
Its hard to see there but on the side there's a toggle switch that lets you pick between 'dinput' and 'xinput'.
How does one install the emulator? Do I need to do this over adb ? If so, how can I download an apk from the play store?
I can't get Super GNES to work. I install it and it says there is a new version on the play store and for me to download it. Well I downloaded it from the play store so I don't see how its not the newest version. Where are you getting your version of Super GNES?

If the app you want to "sideload" is in the normal Play store, all you have to do is load up the Play store on your computer then click install and select your Nexus Player as the device. That simple. You'll also want to install Chainfire's Sideload Launcher app from the Play store as well, as that makes accessing non-android tv optimized apps easier:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.tv.sideloadlauncher&hl=en
If you have an apk you'd rather install manually, you'll have to use adb and an a cable or use ES File Explorer (or equivalent) to transfer the apk from your computer/etc over wifi. There are already a few topics in these threads that discuss how.

I got the same error with the (non-free) non-lite version of GNES. Tried the (free) lite version and that works fine (version 1.5.4). I'm not too experienced with sideloading, but perhaps the non-free nature of the full version of SuperGNES is the issue? The free version sucks though, since you can't load saved states, so it seems I can't continue my progress even though the ROM in question has save functionality.
Just wanted to share my experiences so far, since this is one of the bigger reasons I bought the NP. I've managed to load NES.emu, 2600.emu, MAME4Droid (0.37b5), and Mupen64 AE so far.
Installing apps:
Like many have suggested, I was able to load a couple of apps like ES Explorer and NES.emu through the Google Play web site and selecting the NP as the installation target. However, MAME and a couple of other apps would not install this way, so I have to sideload Aptoide and use that to install the remaining apps. Note that since no web browser is available, I had to use another tablet to identify the stores where apps could be found, and add them manually before selecting apps and installing them.
Navigation:
For the most part, the remote suffices, but it's not perfect. I installed ChainFire's Sideload Launcher, as only NES.emu shows up in my apps menu on the home screen. However, I happened to own a Nyko Playpad (not the Pro) from a while ago that I never really used. While I can't recommend it as a great gaming controller, it does have one key feature that turns it from run-of-the-mill control pad to ultimate NP utility. It contains a switch that allows you to switch between HID, iCade, Mouse, and App modes. It's the Mouse setting that makes this controller truly useful, because without it, I couldn't navigate around MAME to set up my control pad, or navigate around Mupen64 to quit out of a game (how else are people achieving this? Just quitting out?) Basically, to really set up many of the emus properly, you need some kind of mouse input, so it's nice that I can switch the Playpad back and forth between HID and Mouse modes as needed.
Performance:
Obviously, NES.emu and 2600.emu are not really demanding, so they work "flawlessly" (as in, any problems are due to the emulators, not the NP.) I also chose the smaller MAME, and nothing in there really pushes the system too hard. Street Fighter II Turbo ran as fast as expected. The only really challenge to the system was Mupen64. I'm happy to say that it ran everything that it was capable of running at full frame rate, and the only hiccups were related to the emulator itself. It successfully ran Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and Mischief Makers. It could not Blast Corps or Bomberman 64.
All in all, I can say that things work well, provided you have the right equipment. For me, the mode switch feature of the Nyko Playpad is indispensable, although if you have a bluetooth enabled mouse device, that will suffice. Things can only get better. I haven't tried PPSSPP yet, but that will be my next test.
Thank you so much sjj.
