Hi!
I'm suffering from reboots on my Note (also on my S2...). I call them "black" reboots because the screen becomes black, there's no start-up animation , I only hear the sound, and the home screen don't comes up, or it do it after a long delay. So, the screen is mostly black. Until 2-3 minutes pass, and reboot again.
-Sometimes occurs simply starting up the phone in the morning. I'm advised of a slow launcher load (Go Launcher, but it can occurs on TW).
If I go to System Monitor (System Panel app), I see the 2 cores working hard, toghether or alternating. The "System" app goes mad. The battery drain becomes quick, and the phone back around the camera begins to warming...
After 2-3 minutes with this behaviour, the "black" reboot comes up. Often, after rebooting, the message "Unable to run System process"- Force Close-Wait (or so) appears in the black...etc
If I force shut-off, then I wait and then shut-on again, all things seem normal, until...reboot
-Factory reset (through Recovery, of course) seems arrange all things, until I load again the apps. I've unistalled all "tweaking" apps for overclocking, Ram managing, etc. I only have Root explorer and Speed Boost as Root operating things...
- My Rom is an odex Pre-rooted XXLC1, Modem XXLB2, but the multiCSC is not from it.
How the phone can become so unstable with only the half memory app capacity occuped? (800 Mb or so of 2GB)?
And how can it often occurs on updating apps from damned Google Play Store?
Is worth to flash another Rom (not ICS...), or re-flash same with its CSC included?
Sorry if I've been too long. In my searchs I only see things about bricks or another type of reboots.
Thanks for read me!
i get these once every two weeks or so.
I also get these type of reboots, I get them on RocketROM and on previous roms I've had installed the only way I've found to get out of them is to boot into recovery and wipe the caches. Before I was rooted I removed some of the apps I'd moved to the SD Card and that sometimes stopped the boot loop. I now only update apps one by one someone suggested it was to do with the amount of apps moved to the sd card and the multiple updating of them. I'm still not sure of the cause I know its the only flaw on my Note that I'm fed up with.
Im running stock ics rom straight from samsung only with root and getting the same behaviour as yourself. About 2 to 3 times a week...

Ive posted a poll as i also experience this issue. Can you vote on the poll here please with how many reboots you are getting etc - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706343

Guys, i don't know if I'm going to cry of pain or to laugh of huge joy, after seeing this is almost ..."normal"
We have a beautiful 500€ plastic and metal block which is unable to perform the half of things it's supposed to do! And we don't know exactly why...
Sure I do wipes, but most of times this fixes nothing, and the reboot returns.
If I re-install with Titanium, I am very careful unsellecting into the batch which things can cause problems, installing only a few apps.
After some days, I go on installing manually some others.
The Play updates are critical, as I see... Why? How it's possible that this "beasts" with so much RAM and so much App Memory (2 GB on S2 and Note!) fail down handling its management, with their super 2 core CPU's?
It's too serious. How we can live with a 500€ phone rebooting bad 2 times a week?
Can you imagine that on your computer, forcing you to re-install OS and apps once or twice a week? It's crazy. Is Android going crazy?
Maybe Samsung don't like Root users? Have HTC same problem?
There's someone with a non rooted phone with same problem?
Are you guys running stock? Had custom rom installed or still have?

I have this Rom, based on strict stock, but rooted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24690725&postcount=154
Mine is the XXLC1
No tweaks, no overclocking, no CWM...
I had the same problem when my GN was on rooted LC1. I disappeared after I made a factory reset and let my apps reinstall by Play Store.
Yes me too got out of this strange reboot by a factory reset today morning.
Something is messed up .....
Very difficult to find that something ...
better idea would be a factory reset .....
I think the problem is with the Stock Samsung Rom, it doesnt happen in CM9 Roms. I had this problems wen on ROcket rom, but vanished when on Asylum Rom.
go wild...

Yesss, very difficult. I'm not on advanced technical stuff, but my intuition says that is something deep inside the Rom, something that is related to CPU-Memory management.
By the way, do you have/had many apps (250+)? Have you made recently massive update and/or installing apps, or massive "App to SD" moves?

You are pushing me a little step more to the wild side of Android.... Here I'll go!
It seems to me that the Note is a strangely different phone of, say, S2. Some apparently "simple" apps that I carry on from 2 years ago don't run right.
And the little lags that sometimes appear on touching icons, never, never appear on the fast S2.
Lol be carefully factory on ICS resetting...
Try and official rom, haven't seen it myself

Hello everyone,
I just got my note 4 last night and I saw that it freezes all of a sudden when using it heavily. To restart the phone I had to press and hold power button + volume down button or sometimes remove the battery. One of the examples is playing a movie via Samsung's video player. Also while having torrent pro working in the background and using the phone. I thought it is a software issue but I think it isn't as I've reset the phone two times then later got an update from Samsung. Any advices on that? Did anyone face this sort of problem as well? Can it be a hardware issue like the processor over heating? I am using the Exynos version N910U.
I have the same model as you and I didn't face any freeze.
Never happen to me at all since i doubt to use torrent on my phone, so not too sure. But have noticed any overheat or something?

Not in normal use, just when I tried ART because of adapting all the apps.

i think u shouldn't use ART yet coz may be some of your apps are not compatible with ART, try to change back to Dalvik and see does it still happen or not. Otherwise factory reset then.

I was talking about the process of switching from dalvick to ART. But I came back to Dalvick cause of some lags.

Oh, my bad I never switch to ART, so can't tell, but may be later on when Android L comes will solve this problem.
i reckon now is not a perfect time to try ART.
So, it lags when u came back from ART to Dalvick? The system lags? Or when u using some specific apps?
ART promises a performance boost in applications, better battery life, and lower memory utilization, so while waiting for root figure I'll try this out.........
The first thing you're going to need to do is enable the Developer Options. Go to Settings> About Phone, and scroll down to Build Number. Tap on the Build number 7 times until a notification pops up and says that you've unlocked developer options.
Press back to the previous settings menu, where you should now see the Developer Options menu. Jump in there and tap on Select Runtime. Select ART, and you'll receive a warning asking if you would like to switch from libdvm.so to libart.so. After tapping on Yes, your phone will reboot.
Your phone will reboot, go get a cup of coffee or something cause this will take awhile. Mine sat on the Sprint bootscreen for a full five minutes ( don't panic ), next you'll be presented with a screen that says Android is upgrading. This is the longest part of the process, mine ran a full 20+ minutes but after it's done, you're good to go.
Everything seems to be running fine but if you're running into issues with the new runtime, you can always return to Dalvik by using the same method above. And remember try this at your own risk, there's a reason it's hidden deep inside developer options................
I just switched to art today and no issues so far. I'm thinking since this will be here official sooner then later that most of the bugs (or slacker developers) should be all caught up.

Yeah I've been running it for over 2 hours and haven't seen any issues, yet...Has stuck through several reboots, though I reloaded a bunch of apps from the play store and on another reboot I got another long agonizing Android Updating again......
Ok, so ive been toying with my...toy. After rooting I rebooted and its "optimizing" like 60ish apps, and continues to do so after every reboot.
- Switched back to Dalvik and it reboots fine.
ART Loop
I have an ATT Note 4 and came here to find out if this is an issue, as mine is doing this too. Everything is fine until you power the phone down, and it optimizes the apps again.
My phone got very hot after i enabled ART

Same here
Undid ART And it returned to normal temp right away.
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
On first set-up this is very processor intense, after it finishes the phone does settle down and the heat issue goes away. After running this for 24 hours It seems the phone "feels" a little sluggish, not really seeing a performance boost. Biggest problem is the optimization on every reboot. Yesterday I had 71 apps that needed to go through this on every reboot but as the apps are getting updated through the playstore this number is dropping. Guess we are seeing the app developers getting ready for the Lolipop drop soon, but I wonder what this means for those that have a few legacy apps we still run. Will we be seeing this issue in the future with older apps? ART it seems has no benefit on Kit Kat, yet....
After a couple of reboots the updating stops. If you are sluggish, did you root? That could also be the issue.

No root, went back to Dalvik, just feels smoother, maybe placebo effect. I'll just wait till there's official root & recovery before I jump back into ART and can tinker around......
Actually, art won't stick. It resets to dalvik on reboot.
Just wait for an Android Lollipop build. I believe ART will be standard.

From starting iwth over 200 apps to optimize, I now have under 100 after my 3rd reboot. They also seem to be optimizing much faster.

Now it went i uninstalled xposed, and tried again. Now it seems to be upgrading the apps. I'll see if re-installing xposed after its done trips it or if you just have to uninstall it before you switch.
I had forgotten xposed isnt supported on art yet, but didnt know it would prevent it from running / switching. I thought i had been using both on CM on my note 2, maybe i wasnt.
does this perform a hard reset?
Just wandering how good is ART on the Note 4, I haven't received my Note 4 yet but I would like to use ART when I get it.
Hi all
Like the title says, do we think Google will release a fix for the laggy performance on the nexus 7. My wife's nexus got the update a few weeks ago and since then it's been almost unusable. She is not rooted and we don't want to go down that road
My Nexus 7 2013 has not got the update yet so I'm hoping they are working on fixes.
Any thoughts?

I noticed the same. But even before the update my N7 was having performance issues. Things got better after a Reset. But then I decided to try the Encryption feature and that is when I got stuck. Now it has been 15 hours and the device is still stuck on the startup screen. I don't think encryption takes so long....

Are u using more then one account on it? (I think that switching between 2 accounts affect performance)
Done a factory reset.. Seems better
I turned on Develop Options then scrolled to the bottom and checked off "Kill all activities when you leave them" and I really don't have the lag anymore.
I as well am experiencing major lag with 5.0 on my 2012 nexus 7. I flashed the image when it was avaliable so a fresh start. I'm not rooted and also tried clearing cache via the recovery menu. I really hope there is a fix in sight or I'll be going back to KK or custom rom like cyanogenmod.

I had not previously tried that because I was not sure if the system is meant to run continually with that option enabled. It's more for testing I thought. However I did enable this option and rebooted. The result was an increase in performance but I think it only acts as a band-aid. We (users) should not be forced to take such measures after installing a fresh image or updating to the latest and greatest from android. I still hope there will be patch to resolve whatever issue seems to be causing the lag.
On a side note after disabling the Dev option and rebooting I'm noticing better performance. Not sure if this is a fluke or what but I thought it was with mentioning.
Thank you.
Something has happened. They've pulled the OTA. I've got 2 N7 2012s. One has been updated and is useless despite any cache cleanup and factory reset. The other is still running 4.4.4 and does no longer offer the lollipop upgrade to brick status.
I cleared cache and did the 'Kill all activities...' without any success. I don't want to wipe the device because my wife uses it and it is setuped the way she wants it... but is unusable right now. Will wait for 5.0.1 if that doesn't do the trick will restore 4.4.4

I have hesitated updating my kids N7's for the time being but you really should try going into Developer options and do two things.
Change Transition animations to 0.5
AND
Kill all activities when you leave them(that might not be the exact wording but you can't miss it)
My tablet is very useful at this point but knowing Google is pushing 5.01 to other Nexus devices I will hold off for my kids tablets.

I've tried every tip I've come across including cache wipe, factory reset, developer options and stripping the system from everything that isn't strictly necessary. None of this makes noticeable difference. I've even seen people suggest hardware failure, but I find it hard to believe that a tablet that has shown no symptoms at all in the past should break the minute it is upgraded.
I've updated to Android 10 recently and, while I enjoy the improvements to the performance, I have been far from impressed with the phone's RAM management. Sometimes, the phone would just randomly fail to launch any apps. I would just tap on any app I want to launch from the home screen or in the app drawer and the phone would just stall. Maybe after quite some time, the phone would initially launch the app but at crawling speed and fail to completely load it. The only way out is to tap the home or the recent apps button multiple times. Also, when opening the recent apps view, I don't actually find the app that failed to launch in the recent apps at all.
Is it only me or is this a known issue? Will formatting my phone do any help?
I am having a similar issue. It occurs randomly, and I have to reboot to fix it.
Same here.
The only way to recover for me is to reboot.
I am hoping the October release will have a fix.

Yes, hope we get those fixes also (though only mentions security ?). I also hope the sensor calibration fix might stop phone waking up when in the car and we hit even a smallish bump, it never used to happen on 9.

Damn! I thought it probably would not be fixed as I believe we only get they security updates fast each month. We'll have to wait & hope we get the fixes soon. I haven't even hand chance to update yet! Lol
Sitrep: updated successfully to the latest update (October security patch). 41 hours of uptime have just passed as I was writing this and so far, I only had a similar issue with Google Chrome (failed to load any pages) but as soon as I opened the App Info and cleared 2 gigs of cache it went back to normal. Didn't get that freezing issue anymore. Looks like it was fixed indeed. Awesome!
I'll still keep an eye on it.
To my shock, it appears that the October security update didn't fix this issue. It may have taken more uptime to occur but it is still there. I think at this point I'm better off switching back to Android Pie custom ROMs.
October version seems better to me. Not as good as Pie but the freeze is not permanent to a point where I have to reset to recover.
Now, when it freezes, it takes about 3-5 seconds to recovers.

Just in the midst of switching between tasks or starting a new app.

I had similar issues when I dirty flashed from P to Q.
Although there are defo some Audio HAL issues on Q as mentioned in a previous post, noticeable when trying to play music through the dongle.
Sitrep: switched to AOSiP 10 (20191012 build), never had a single RAM management issue since. Not sure if it's because of clean flashing the ROM, switching to f2fs or whether it's the ROM that has some fixes. But, well I'm a happy man now
