According to this review, the T-Mobile SONY Xperia Z1s has a glass front, but a plastic back panel...is this correct?
I thought the Z1s was the same as the Z1 with both front & back glass.
I understand that T-Mobile requested a change to the frame which are molded in plastic instead of aluminum, but nothing about the back.
Can someone confirm this?

It's glass. That's the only review that says that...I wondered the same thing.

It's hard to tell due to the ASF installed over it...could be mistaken for being plastic.
Wished that T-Mobile didn't decide to change to the plastic frame...feels less top tier.
I guess having better reception is worth it. :victory:

Yeah, I was going to say, it's for reception. And it really doesn't make a difference anyway. As long as it's not shiny plastic, I'm fine with plastic.
I dropped my phone and cracked that plastic going outwards out of my usb port so I'm kinda wishing it was metal lol

Do you mean under the glass? i don't have this but there is dust between the glass and the cover

Problem is I'm not sure what autor of review mean I think he mean under front glass (in housing) but on the LCD screen.
What you mean between glass and the cover, what cover? Forgive me please my minuteness, but I really hate dust inside my phone
As you can see I own (like you) Nexus One and like this phone. Have it rooted and little moded. What is better on Nexus One compare to Arc, what I will miss?
No dust on mine at all, just lots of grubby fingerprints where everyone that notices the Arc wants to hold it.
I was originally going for the optimus 2x or the SGS2. But my girlfriend said "if you hold that in your hand you are saying to people that you wanted an iphone but could not afford it".
Talking of iphones... after plugging the Arc into the TV and going through the photos using the TV remote she wants to swap her iphone 4 for my Arc. No chance!

The arc screen is made with a ' no air gap' system, so you won't get dust between the glass and the screen.
Sent from The Arc!
It's what Iceman said, so maybe he is talking about dust between the screen protection film and the glass, but i don't see that in my Arc.
Perhaps its a post-production model.
I never had dust under screen with phones, perhaps with 5800 but I can't really remember, somehow I had some of them with a Sony Walkman A1000 5 years ago
Thank you all for reply. Now I am peaceful about dust
No dust on mine too.

I must say, i dont agree with ur gf
A SGS2 will be much better then the Iphone4 and a SGS2 is not cheap. 600 euros is not really cheap don't you think?
I have bought the Arc though, because i like the design of the Arc
There is a very (and I mean VERY) small gap between the glass screen and the plastic casing, however like I say this is tiny. I have a little bit of dust in that gap, but I had to look close before I could even notice it. This gap is to the top bottom left and right of the screen, and not underneath it. As stated above, SE have implemented a "no-air gap" which not only means no dust under the screen, but also has other perks, such as being able to read your screen clearly in bright sunlight (trust me, this is so great it's annoying!!)
now, i thought the z1 had some sort of toughened glass, i noticed this morning that my display has a chip in the screen
i thought it might be something stuck, so i gently ran my fingernail over it and it's as though a tiny chunk has been taken out of the glass. wasn't there before, and i haven't dropped it or knocked it against anything (to my knowledge)
now that sucks, especially as i know it's there!
whoa that's hard..
but you sure it's not the anti shatter proof sheet that got chipped?

don't think so, running the fingernail on it, it feels like a chip in the actual glass
wasn't there when i got it, because i'm pretty precise about these things - i tried putting the screen protector on it when i got it but messed that up, so no external protector on it...

Is it front side? If yes could it just be the screen protector which every device has? My protector already has countless scratches, some pretty deep. Seems to be low quality for original sony...
okay then last question...
do you still have that Sony logo infront of your phone?
if yes, then it's the anti shatter proof that you chipped.. a pretty common case if it does
so if you remove it, you will get the bare Dragontrail glass but no oleophobic coating
getting a tempered glass screen guard is still the best choice as of now

yeah, the logo is still there, i guess it's the antishatter screen, i'm not going to remove that for now, will deal with it
will consider the tempered glass screen guard for now
i have no idea where or how it could have happened!
Isn't there any warranty covering something like this? Sony has been saying removing the asf voids your physical / cosmetic warranty for the screen. Doesn't the fact that the asf is still on and there is no evidence of dropping the phone then cover the damage under warranty?

WOAH! I don't want to freak anyone out, but this has happened to me too. Sony will fix it, but your warranty doesn't cover it
Is the chip a funny colour? As My screen was fine, then a chip has appeared, as if overnight, with a coloured hue to it :/
Freaking. Spooky.

I agree. When I tried to remove the ASF, it started to chip at the corner too. At first I though it was the screen itself but, if you look at it at ~175 degree angle, you will notice the crack which is on the ASF. Then I carefully remove the ASF. Once you remove the ASF, the screen will be all clear. I then put my screen protector on that I purchased from nillkin. Of course, the Sony logo will be gone, but IMHO, the phone will look more sleeker, have less fingerprint smudges, and less glare.
Let me guess, the chip or scratch is located a bit to the side of the screen.. More likely on the place where you place your thumb the most..... Because a repeated nail friction could damage the sheet pretty fast...
It happened to my Z1 too, but applying a screen protector on it helps hiding the damage quite a bit

i spoke with sony who asked me to send it in
so will send it to them and see what they say - me being me, i can't stand to see that little chip in the screen!!
when i get it back, i'll put a screen protector on it - now to find a screen protector which doesn't take away from the good looks of the phone!

Let us know how you get on mate, I want to send mine into Sony, but A) I'm scared it's going to cost £60+ to fix and B) they want £10-£15 to send the phone back to me :/
I've got a tiny piece missing all of a sudden. I swear it's been treated with love but I think it's the ASF. Very disappointing from Sony on a premium product.

Once leaks started to surface of the z3 i noticed that the corners were seperate and that the plastic inner frame i hated on previous xperias has been removed, so i assumed these corners were made of plastic replacing that frame, HOWEVER according too sony they are nylon and they are there to protect the phone, so then how did they solve the reception issue? theres no plastic lines anywhere on the phone not on the back not on the side, every non plastic phone has plastic lines for reception, z z1 and z2 had a inner plastic frame, iphone 6s has plastic lines, htc one m8 has plastic lines, but xpria z3 could be made without any plastic for reception how did they do this?
I also figured out why they wen't with that ugly speaker design, which is a step backwards in my opinion, the z2's subtle speaker were in the same location as the z3, but the plastic frame was there to cover it up now that the frame is gone the speaker had to be put right in the glass instead.
Glass isn't going to block radio, and I can't see them bothering making the back metal if it's under glass, what's the point if no one's going to ever feel it? It's probably all plastic back there to let the RF through. And the nylon corners are probably RF-transparent as well.
I'm so glad they got rid of the injection molding around the glass too. It started out nice looking but was the only part of my phone subjected to scuffs, dings and fading. Made the phone a little cheap looking over time. I told myself I wouldn't buy the Z3 if it was built the same way. It was the only thing wrong in an otherwise perfect phone for me.

Please, the PC term is "polycarbonate"
But yeah the idea was to have a non stiff material that could flex and act as a shock absorber. Glass shattering is what happens when the glass has to flex and absorb the shock because everything else (like metal) is harder.
Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
Not sure it's pure polycarbonate tbh. To me it felt more like 10-30% gf nylon, just as strong but about 10% of cost.

I just got my amazing z5 graphite black and it really feels good in my hands! My first impression it have a very good screen saturation more than another xperia smartphones more smooth and look so classy! Anyway I really enjoy with it. Anyone love the back frosted glass like me? Does it will get scratch easily or not? It seems like it hard to scratch it i don't want to use the case or screen protector on the back! And in the front i already got tempered glass screen protector!

So the Z5 isn't slippery?
I think not easy to slip off like older xperia
So how is the frosted back holding up being naked? Scratches galore like the Z3 or no?
An I the only one who doesn't like the displayaat all? Just because the blacks doesn't look black.
I wish it had super AMOLED panel.
Held one instore, still feels quite slippy
I've been running without protection on the back for almost two weeks now, I see no scratches and quite impressed, admittedly I've been conscious not put it in the same pocket as my keys though it has happened. I have back cover coming so it will be protected soon.
I also suffered a drop yesterday the screen held up unlike my Z2 which cracked and made half the screen unfunctional, but I still put faith in Sony and got another Z when this came out.

Well I have only had mine for a few days so it's a little too early to tell, but so far so good.
I had the gold version, and it looks amazing. I went for gold this time as all my previous Z phones (Z,Z1,Z3) have been black.
I had to get a case for it, but I wanted to still be able to show off the phone, so I got an ultra slim, clear gel case from eBay.
The gel case doesn't crack and fall apart if you drop the phone, nor does it mark the phone casing, so it's great.
You can hardly tell I have a case on it.
I do very much like the frosted back, it does look really smart.

Nope, unless they were lubricated. Only ever owned an Xperia SP and I found that absolutely fine. Might be quite close to an iPhone 6 - I'll compare tomorrow (iPhone 6 at work).
EDIT: Z5 rear confirmed slippier than iPhone 6 rear.

No scratches so far but then again it doesn't go into my pocket with anything metal. Seems resilient though.

Bingo.
The back does not scratch very easily on a table like the z3,
I think its because on the z5 the metal frame of the phone sticks out past the frosted glass, so on a flat surface it does not touch the table.
We will have small accidents for sure and this issue the remaining gripe before buying this phone. Any thoughts or experiences?

I use tempered glass front and back protectors, from devilcase.
Together with the grey devilcase aluminum bumper which is rock-solid.
The tempered glass protectors won't scratch as fast as foils; i use them for almost a year now and no single scratch even when looking thru a magnifier.
The aluminum bumper will prevent bending in pocket when something heavy lands on my phone in my pocket.
They are quite expensive (for a case) but in my opinion definitely worth it.
Google it, devilcase

Did all your devices, with or without any cases, survive drops?
i have dropped my z5 a load of times by this point and i have yet to notice any damage on anywhere but the metal band around the edge of the device
also i use my phone without a case so i have to say the z5 is way more stronger than my z2
Mine fell 2 times on my hardwood floor from 1-1.5 m, not even a scratch. Then I bought and used this spigen hybrid case, never dropped since.
alrightie. I might get this phone over the XPerformance before the end of the month. Cheers!

hi fellow pinoy hehe
yeah get the z5, i have it for 3 months already and dropped it several times and thankfully no scratches or whatever. It looks so nice I sometimes just look at it and hold it for a whole minute haha
I use a case though, just in case (pun heavily intended hahaha)
I wish I had the same experiences everyone else here did. The day after I got my z5, my phone slid off a very very slightly tilted work surface (the back of the phone is extremely slippery) and it fell about 3 feet onto a linoleum flooring. The back is now all cracked. Found out afterwards that lots of people recommend tempered glass front and back for the z5. I have them on now haha
I think back panel is not that much weak the problem is camera lens side of back panel. it straches very easily as Sony used very poor material at this part

indeed, it's stupid considering that plastic scratches that easily and is that vulnerable ( /me squinting at the LG V30 with its reinforced glass lens)
