I just recently resigned with Telus on a three year contract that gives me unlimited data for $30/month. Apparently it was offered around Xmas for $15/month. The only restriction is that you cannot use it to tether to your laptop for a data connection through the phone. My question is how do they know? Does the laptop broadcast a different MAC or something that enables Telus to identify whether or not your tethering?

i dont think there is anyway they know besides observing the type of data youre transmitting/receiving and how much. been tethering for a long time now with no problems.
Which plan is it you are on exactly? i can`t find any info on this on the telus website. I would switch immediately if i can find the info.
It's not on the website but if you phone Telus they have it. My Apex rep in Surrey knew about it and set me up. I think it might expire today or tomorrow so hurry. My P4000 was stolen last month and I needed to replace it. I was only 18 months into a 3 year contract and only had a $200 bonus on my account for a new phone and contract. I was able to talk directly to Telus and get them to let me back into that phone for the $199 on a three year contract. The phone is around $550 without contract.
This is the first time I've seen unlimited data for a reasonable price in Canada.
I still think that there is a way they know your tethering. Perhaps the MAC address is the identifier. I hope someone can shed further light into this. It would be nice if Telus is just saying this to stop me but really don't have a mechanism to identify if you are tethering or not.

Select telus smartphones and select the phone you want and it'll show you available plan options for that particular model.
They were offering unlimited internet, email and IM for $15 during the xmas period thru till valentines day, now they re-packaged it for $30 or $45, whatever suits your taste. Way better than any other carrier in Canada.
Funny enough even though it says unlimited, there still is a cap on how much data you can use. It's capped, not quite too sure at how many gigs, but go over that and they will charge you $8/MB. A clause embedded in the plan stating that they have discretion over what they think is abuse of the service.
Only reason I know this is I have a friend of mine who got drunk of the service and used his pda to download content he would normally dl using his home pc, try guessing his reaction when his phone bill came up to $789!! they were courteous enough to send him an itemized bill tracking his usage to fully explain the charges. I thought it was freaking hilarious! I guess moral being If you MUST tether, do it reasonably or don't at all.

Thank you so much for detailed explanation. I didn't know too much about this, but went directly to $45 when I discovered that promo because that's what I need. Comparing with my initial $25 / 4MB, $45 isn't bad.
I believe as long as I stay on email checkup, and news, stock, and weather update, should be safe.
Question is, if this X-Max, the $15 plan comes back again, am I still eligible to change?

Initially it was first introduced for new clients only but then they extended the offer to existing clients, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to sign up when and if they re-introduce it, it was such a huge success. It can be used as an add-on to your existing plan.

I got the $15 unlimited internet plan around christmas-time. The only stipulation was that the voice+data plan had to go above $45. Originally it was just being offered for certain phones, then they opened it up to every smartphone. I told all my friends about it, only a couple got it. Now they raised the price to $30 and the ones that missed out are kicking themselves.

I'd really like to be able to watch TV on my handset and I'm tempted to buy a Slingbox and hook it up to my Sky+, as the prices for this hardware have dropped to around £50.
The thing that worries me is any charges Vodafone might make for data transfer charges.
On another forum Ive seen a Vodafone user claim that he doesn't get any extra charges using his handset to receive TV via Slingbox using 3G, but I'm skeptical.
I know that using WiFi would incur no costs, but what about 3G & HSDPA...
Do any forum members have first hand experience of using Slingbox on the Vodafone network ?
If so, are you charged for doing so, if you are, how much do you end up paying ?
BTW, I'm on the £7.50 Mobile Internet Plan.

I'm on vodafone and use my slingbox all the time. I'm on an unlimited UK data contract, although I try and use wifi where possible.

I'm on the £7.50 'Unlimited' plan, but reading the small print there is a "fair usage" limit of 500Mb a month. Using Vodafones site, this equals about 6 1/2 hours TV a month !
Are you also on the same £7.50 package ? Do you use 3G for Slingbox for more than 6 1/2 hours a month without extra charges ?

Hey guys, like you, even though we have to manually do alot to get our HD2's in perfect condition. I wanted to hip you all to something that I'm currently taking advantage of, which is saving me major money each month.
Went to Wal-Mart on the lauch date of the infamous HD2, and paid full price for one, thinking that it would end up saving me money in the long run, because I had my own equiptment, therefore, I wasn't under a 2 year aggreement for T-Mobile.
Went to the T-Mobile store to get setup with service. Deciding on getting the T-Mobile unlimited everything plan (voice,sms,data) it ended up costing me around $92 a month (including taxes, fee's, and the $5 discount). So, I began thinking, "this is not the significant discount I was looking for". I asked the salesman what was the benefit of me purchasing this phone outright, he told me that if I got the same package and features, with the phone discount, under contract, it would cost me around $120-$130 a month. I began to seek other options to lower my bill. However, I was hesitant to lower anything, because I did one time, and got fuked over with crazy overage charges! I even thought about switching it over to AT&T, but then realized I'd be loosing out on the high speed data, because of the incompatibilities of the 3G radios between the 2 networks (and who wants edge speed on a smartphone these days!).
Then I did some research and found out about Simple Mobile, this is a Virtual carrier of T-Mobile (like how Virgin is to Verizon, and Boost is to Sprint). Anyway, after a couple of emails, and phone calls, I decided to make the switch. I found a nearby retailer (or u can check them out online) And I never looked back!
I now play EXACTLY $60 a month, for unlimited everything (voice,sms,data). And I was able to port and keep my same number. While this is truly great in of itself. Another great feature is because it's still a subsiary of T-Mobile, I didn't have to software unlock the HD2 at all. It was literally a matter of taking the old Sim card out and putting the new one in. The only thing that I did have to reconfig was the internet settings and the MMS settings to be able to have those 2 things function correctly. (which is very easy, I provided a link to the instructions below)

The internet is exactly the same, I'm still getting the H icon at the top, with about 4 MB sec speeds. Call quality and range is the same, and so is the txting features. Because it's using the same T-Mobile towers as before. (which T-Mobile is very good, in Costa Mesa, CA )
Don't know about you all, but especially in these times, when money is tight, I have to really buckle down to budget and plan for big ticket items. So when I spend $400+ on a device. I truly want to be able to see more of the savings, in the long run. And thats how I cut my bill in half! They even offer plans at $30 and $40 if you don't want or need unlimited data for your phone, therefore saving your even more money.
This may not help some of you guys out there, but if your like me, and not in a contract, or you may be in a contract, and thinking this may be a better route for you in the long run (make sure you do your math beforehand, and make sure your savings outweigh your ETF from T-Mobile) I just wanted to let you know, that you do have an option out there.

Yes sir, I sure am, it displays the H icon, so I know its the HSDPA speed, which is alittle faster then 3G...however, i'm not sure if its the new HSDPA+ that you might have been hearing lately. I say that because, I dont believe WM have a status icon to show you that (because the technology is so new), so my theory is that, IF the HD2 supports it, AND its is getting the HSDPA+ signal, it'll still show the H icon at the top right of the device. But to answer your question, its DEFINITELY gets the high speed, because its still using the same towers!
I have friend that works in one of those smokes, cell, and gun stores and he has been trying to get me into this program.
It's good to go and legit.
Unfortunately I am only 6 months into my new 2 year contract...had to for my $190 Leo.

Simple mobile does not provide unlimited data. I believe it's still capped at 1GB/month. Which is a big no no for people who like to tether and abuse the network.....

Both reported and the end of July of this year.... so unless something has changed in 3 months time, NO it is not unlimited.
I was suckered into a new mobile phone plan with a new company called Simple Mobile. They are a T-mobile MVNO (essentially a reseller) claiming to offer UNLIMITED talk, text, and data for $60/mo.
The reality is... Their $60 plan is NOT unlimited. When you hit 1000MB in one month your data service is simply terminated without warning.
They will offer to sell you an additional 100MB for $10. This policy is not stated anywhere on their website. If you call or write and complain, they will simply tell you to go elsewhere and will not provide any refund.

I mean really............. just think about it for a minute, do you really think T-Mobile is going to allow another company to use their network and infrastructure all the while having them undercut their own prices too.....not to mention the toll and expense of all pushing out all that bandwidth at "unlimited" rates.

All I can do , is speak from my experience. Since having this service, I KNOW that I used more than 1GB (stream music all day, watch YouTube, use it for general internet browsing, and logging into my Orb media server at home, and streaming TV from my PC). So I would definitely consider myself a above average data user, and have not once, been capped or throttled (trust, I would be *****ing and complaining, with everyone else). I've even checked my usage online to see it and its a little under 2Gigs of data transfer, and everything is ok. I not sure if maybe I have a magic bean, VIP, IMEI on my device (joke-e-joke ) , which is given unlimited data usage, without penalty, or maybe they've modified their contract and upped the data usage cap or something. Again, I can only speak from my personal experiences, within the last 3 months, reguarding my device and service. I don't use my phone for tethering, but I do consider myself a heavy data usage user and not had any problems regarding their quality of service thus far.

You can cut your phone bill even more sharply. I'm paying about ~$20/month right now depending on my voice usage when out and about.
Wasn't planning on it being my main connection, but my cable got cut off a few days ago, so I got my wireless router to pick up my phone wifi that's broadcasting 3G, and I'm getting speeds ~130-300kB/s (kiloBYTE) which isn't too shabby.
Streaming videos, webpages load up quickly, I don't even notice unless I go to download a large file. Just curious if anyone else is doing this.

All of us that are irritated at verizon for taking away the unlimited plans are going to be showing up at your homes soon (rotaryboots, POQbum... looking at you).

But for those who haven't figured out why unlimited data plans are going extinct... the topic of this thread is the reason. Myself I've only done it temporarily one night, when my wired connection went down. I usually get my phone data from the wired source when possible, not the other way around.

I'll go further and better describe the setup, sometimes I use the wifi on my phone to broadcast the access but more often than not I plug it in to my old laptop which is plugged into my router via LAN cable then bridge the connections so that my wireless router uses the phone's internet and I can connect all my computers to my home network....winning

I've had to do this a time or two when my main internet went down. Worked great. Now, however, I have my phone on prepaid network that offers very little data so it has to be basically an emergency for me to do this now. Still, love the fact that it can be done.

I agree a little. Here's my problem I am a husband and father that is having a hard time finding work right now. I have been with Verizon or Bell Atlantic since 1992. It costs me $200 a month for our two phones and has ALWAYS been in the extreme high side. Cable package after a year is also $200 a month. Something had to go. So we now watch HD broadcast TV and get our internet from our phones. I figure after 19+ years and some roughly $45,000 of my hard earned pay, I will use my unlimited data plan the way I like. You (Verizon) have been more than willing to take my money all these years and raise the rates every time you needed to. Well now its time to give back to a loyal customer.
So yes I do use my phone(s) internet as our MAIN INTERNET! And yet I think I have only been throttled one month. Which means that even as our main we still stay under the 5gb each.

But since you are getting all delusional... and self-righteous...here's some TRUTH.
You can rationalize that paying X number of dollars to Verizon in 1995 entitles you to whatever you want to. It entitles you to nothing. It was payment for service that was rendered back in 1995. If the price was too high at Verizon, you could have gotten your service elsewhere or decided to have no service. You are explicitly breaking the contract that YOU agreed to and currently have. Rationalize whatever you want... it doesn't make it true. And now other Verizon customers are getting their prices hiked even more, to pay for your dishonesty. Please rationalize how this is fair...I want to know. If the way you deal with Verizon is typical of the way you deal with other people and institutions, your unemployment situation is... justice... in a karma type of way.

I have internet at home, but I'm on the road most if the time, hotel internet sucks, and I have to log in everyday, so I'm using my phone internet over 95% of the time also to get my moneys worth out of Verizon.
I work two full time jobs and on my breaks or when it's slow, I am on my Incredible utilizing the Internet. I have the unlimited access plan which gives me peace of mind knowing I will not be paying more on my monthly bill than what my plan is set up for. I don't do Pandora or hotspot. Mostly forums, Google, and YouTube. Great way to kill some time when it is a slow night at work.

I only use the internet from my phone when my internet goes out. Right now i am looking to get a 4g phone and will use that a lots since i have a slow connection and 4g is a lot faster.

Just wanted to say that Verizon's decision hardly comes from this, they make billions every quarter.
Their goal like every company is to make as much money as possible, and to get more investors they need to continually be making more profit every quarter. To make sure that happens they will raise prices and cut costs, including things like capping unlimited plans. It's not others peoples fault if they use what they're paying for, even if Verizon doesn't like it, you're still ultimately paying a premium price for cell service that well covers what you're using.

Ehh, depends. If you are in a VzW 4G|LTE area I would definitely consider it, I get faster download speeds on that than my home's Cablevision connection.
I voted eh, because I use it as the main source of internet in the truck. I do have cable at home for my missus and kids, but since I am only home a few days a month it is hard to count that as my internet. I often get 1.2 MB/s down and .1 MB/s up. i normally use 2-4 GB monthly. it might be more now that my co-driver watches jetflix from his tablet through my hotspot (opengarden rules...)
I do. Use at least 20gb a month, use tv out with netflix, use a vpn to watch foreign tv, and download magazines, ect. When I need a java browser I use Alwayson PC, no video/sound but when works for what I need it for. Would love to upgrade to 4g but won't give up my unlimited data.
Luckily we got my wife's thunderbolt a day before the unlimited plans disappeared. Without a cable connection to the house yet, the two phones are our sole connection to everything. Between us, we use about 15 to 20GB per month. When Verizon starts throttling her data, I just switch my hotspot on instead, and we keep going. We've even ran torrents through our 3G connection a few times - boy is that slow! But when there's nothing good on Hulu, we can download a 700MB movie in about an hour and a half. Watching the superbowl that way was a big disappointment though - no commercials and no halftime show? Were they kidding us?
Dont use it for my main net but I have used it a few times to get back on World of warcraft and it works decent to play and be on vent when my main net goes out in the middle of a raid which has happened quite abit lately. Small town sucky cable internet company, a small breeze in the wrong direction can knock out the net for hours lol.
Also I do have a question do you use any specific program to usb tether? Currently using PDA.net wondering if there was a better way.

I've used it on my T-Mobile account. I'm technically not allowed to tether. If I tether with my laptop and watch an HD video it gives me a warning that I need to buy a tethering service for use on external devices. If you use a browser make sure you download some kind of user agent switcher and set it to Android. T-Mobile seems to use that as an identifier if you're tethering a PC. I mainly use it for online gaming on my 3DS. I live less than 1700 feet from the tower, so I have excellent ping and reception. Never had much of a problem tethering aside from the warnings. You just have to make it less obvious that you're using a PC and not download large amounts of data.
I've been tethering with Three UK for a couple of years now. On the One Plan. Totally unlimited. I prob do 50gb+ a week in films, games etc. I think they've stopped it now though, so I don't know what I'm gonna do when my contract ends in March, as I can't get Broadband where I live currently.

You can stay on the one plan and keep the unlimited tethering when your contract is up, mine is up in feb and i plan to keep it going as long as three will let us. I don't see why they have to stop the tethering. Unlimited data on your phone is fine, but not with your PC? I'll download just as much on my phone through torrents etc. I spose that's the next thing they'll stop us from doing.
