Have updated my Tmobile LG G2 to Kitkat and want to debloat it (as I actually like the LG UI). However everything I google about Rooting just links to Kitkat being available but not how (or if) you can root it.
I assume that IORoot22 will only work with 4.2.2, and vroot/kingofroot don't work either, so does anyone know a way to do this?
Thanks in advance

there is currently no way of rooting T-Mobile's Official KK update.
your best option at the moment is to flash back to 4.2.2 via KDZ > Root + Custom Recovery > Flash SmiLey's Stock KK ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2664652 ) > Flash SuperSU zip before rebooting (Recovery will be lost after reboot).
or wait until an exploit is found, there are at least 3 threads discussing this exact thing in the G2 General Section
edit: This thread seems to be the most promising so keep an eye on it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2667227)

Must have been moved it was originally in the Dev Section.
Okay, I somehow rooted my tmobile LG G2 with Kitkat, ran for awhile than did something (don't know what) that removed okay google function from home screen and slowed the google search to a snails pace.
So, like an idiot, I thought I'd just put it back to stock with the D80120a.KDZ. rebooted and restarted everything. BUT the phone still shows rooted in download mode, but rootchecker says I'm not rooted. Also tried to run SuperSU but it says no binary and won't load. Tried Flashify (to try and flash the SU zip) but it also said I couldn't flash because I'm not rooted.
So I ran LG R&D, none of my phone info shows - ran upgrade trying to return it to D80110c/g, but each time it says I'm current and nothing happens.
Have googled every possible search and can't find a fix.
No longer have recovery, because of the stock flash... So I'm in dire need of assistance. Can anyone help me?

OK. So, The LG G2 Forums are a little crazy.... Basically, I Need someone to direct me to the appropriate places to get the right root and recovery.
I'm assuming that TWRP is the recommended recovery?
Thanks.

Depends on what your G2's carrier version is, and the software version you are on. If you're on KitKat 4.4.2, there hasn't been a straight rooting method YET. Devs are still working on that.
In case you are still on JB 4.2.2, you can root via IOroot22. Just search for IOroot22 on xda and oyu will find it. Pretty clear instructions as well.
Good luck.

I wanted to start a new thread since i havent had any luck finding an answer to my question. Basically i need to know how can i unroot my LG G2 LS980 from Sprint. I just want it back to stock. I have tried a few ways (threads in the forums) but after trying fro a few mins they dont seem to work. then when i go to the end of the thread it says these way no longer works. The last one i tried made me download firmware and use the LG Flash tool and change the megalock.dll but after checking all the settings and launching the tool it just sits at 0% forever. I even tried the turn off and put back on download mode again while not closing the tool and it still does the same.
my phone is still on stock recovery, running android 4.2.2 and software version LS980ZV8
I tried doing the OTA that pops up on my phone every other day but it fails to update halfway thru it. Now i want kitkat and i cant update it. I guess worse case i would like to flash a stock rom with kitkat (stock) and still keep it rooted but my issue is im still stuck on ZV8
Well you can easily unroot from inside supersu but if you have modified any part of the system/xposed/removed bloat you will not be able to update unless you flash back to stock

Honestly the only help I can give you since I'm using an AT&T version is this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg693AYgoTo
I know it's for AT&T but for AT&T and Sprint you use the same method to flash. You just have to replace the .tot and .dll for your sprint phone, because the ones included are for the AT&T version. Other than that the steps are the same.
PS the Development forums are not for Q&A, it's for development and feedback (Like logcats and bug fixes, etc).

Guys, my phone just told me there's another upgrade for the lg g2 D803 variant....Anybody seen this yet?
I'm wondering what the upgrade is, seeing it's 1.5 gb.
It's gonna take me to D803B20G. Not sure if the current rooting and autorec recovery method will work on this new firmware, sceptical about installing it......

1. wrong place to post this.
2. general rule of thumb - if you like having root and recovery, NEVER take an OTA from the manufacturer EVER, until it's confirmed that it doens't block root / recovery /bootloader exploits (like the 4.4 ot'as blocked loki)

Q&A if you're asking a question about it, General if you wanted to let people know about it..
yes probably in q&a or general maybe, like stated above please dont install on your phone if youre rooted with a non stock recovery otherwise you will mess up your phone big time! really not sure if its possible but if you can, switch off firmware updates as they are not compatible with the custom recoveries and whichever rom you are using will update soon enough anyway if your on stock rom the same applies if you have a custom recovery

I have stock Rom rooted and twrp recovery that's all.
Avoid the update.
However it has the knock knock code addon. Or, as far as I've heard, that's the only new update LG had planned for the LG G2.
Do not install it. If you REALLY want to try it, make a backup, store it on your PC, OTA. If you lose root, you can revert to stock, get a recovery, put your backup back on your phone and restore.....but that's honestly a lot of work just to possibly get the knock knock code. (I know turning on is knock on, but for the "code" you knock more than once minimum, so I call it knock knock).
You can also force supersu to keep root, but last time I tried that for an OTA I got stuck in a bootloop.
TL;DR: Might be knock on/knock knock code. Not sure what else. You can backup and try to OTA, but no one can be certain what will happen. Expect to lose root. You can force SuperSu to keep root, but you may bootloop.
I'd just wait for more info.

twrp recovery is a custom recovery, so never update.
I'm pretty sure there is an app in /system that you can freeze to stop push updates. Sadly, that is the only info I have. It may have been carrier specific and I haven't been on stock since the first week I had the phone. Haha.
Guys I already know all what you just said......I've done this loads of times. Just wondering if I can uninstall custom recovery without re-installing stock firmware?
I know I can take my chance and try the OTA but not without recovery gone first.
It's a lot of work to just flash stock firmware, install update and if there's no big change, flash stock again.....
Thats why i was wondering if the only option is flash stock to get rid of recovery

I think its possible, (but it should be really hard to do so) but the easiest way is to flash a .kdz file And you should not take the chance to update when you have recovery, it just isn't worth it. Anyways I would just have sticked with a custom rom which gets updated regulary..or flashed a kdz and get back to stock.
Btw can the good judger @Judge Joseph Dredd move the thread to q and a section? I think that it is even more help to get there
OP Moved out of the Development Threads, since this does not belong there....Please read the Forum Rules on posting.
Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well.
I purchased a used G2 a couple weeks ago and activated it on the Sprint (Ting) network. The previous owner seems to have made a failed attempt at rooting the device; There is a SuperSu app in the app drawer but it doesn't work (missing binary) and RootChecker fails.
I've tried using StumpRoot but the "Grind" button is greyed out, as well as IORoot but the flash fails.
If anyone has any tips I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise, if you need any more information about the device just let me know and I'll be sure to post it!
same problem
Android Noob
I just got my g2 ls980zve 4.4.2. My device is not rooted but stump root keep saying your device is rooted. And i couldnt find a proper root guide for this update. Help...!
Best solution: use one of the ZVC tot files and take it back to pure stock, then do the OTA upgrade to ZVD, then ZVE, and use Stump Root nice and clean once you're back on ZVE.
That's my recommendation. Yes it's a bit cumbersome but if you're going to be pure stock (rooted, of course), that's the why I would suggest it be done properly. Trying to "fix" a busted root or one that didn't get done properly could cause more trouble than it's worth. You could do the reflash to pure stock ZVC in a matter of minutes, then the ZVD - ZVE update in a few more and have zero issues whatsoever.
Or flash the zve tot and then use stumproot.

Didn't realize there was a proper ZVE tot file available, would have suggested that if I did but yep, that's even easier and the best solution overall.
Neat...
I am having the same issue, glad to see a solution.
It may be a stupid question, but since I do not know the answer... Where do I find the ZVE, or ZVC files to load? If someone has a link for a thread kn this subject that would be very helpful. In the mean time I will be doing some more searching.
Thanks!
Thanks for the responses guys, really appreciate the pointers!
I'll definitely be trying some of these suggestions when I have time First week back at Uni is kicking my ass so far lol!
Rynglade there is a guide to restore to factory in the lg g2 general section at the top. Internetcommand. if the previous owner attempted root then failed, stumproot will not work as it still detects the phone as rooted. the only way to get it to work is to do a restore with lg flash tool.
@broadband and rularn
Thanks dudes
Hey guys, quick update as I've finally found time to try working on this:
The only issue I'm having right now is that my phone will NOT go into download mode. I've tried several times and nothing seems to get through.
I really don't know what to do from here since I can't flash a stock firmware without going into download mode...
Not sure what all information you will need but ask and I shall gladly supply
Got a LG-ls980
Running stock lollipop 5.0.1 on ZVG update or w/e
Rooted using LG One Click Root (program never said it finished but checked phone and root is verified)
Used autorec to get TWRP v2.8.6.1 (seemingly worked fine)
currently trying to flash the latest nightly of Cyanogenmod
Receiving errors like
assert failed: run_program("/system/bin/loki.sh") == 0
E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/pathtopackage/packagename.zip
can no longer boot normally "security error"
I've done some looking around and tried a few different things but nothing has made any changes, any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thanks
I was told something about loki needing to be unlocked but haven't made any progress as this is my first LG style phone
I'm sure the solution has probably been posted somewhere and probably isn't that difficult but either I couldn't find it or I didn't recognize what I was reading

Doesn't the 5.x autorec install the 4.4 bootloader? You need a 4.2 bootloader to flash cyanogenmod 12 at the moment, because it still uses the loki exploit, instead of the bump provided with the 4.4 bootloader.

Are you planning on running lollipop? I'd suggest keeping the 4.4 bootloader and flashing a CAF-based rom, not only they are much less hacky, they're pretty much stable now.
I'd only flash the old bootloader if I were to install kitkat. Current CM12 sources are VERY outdated.
I was trying to find you the jellybean bootloader but since I don't own a ls980 and I don't visit the section too often this was the closest I could find http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627765

My goal is to have CM12 Lollipop but with a working radio (so a KK bootloader but LP rom?) Reading around I've seen people who have successfully done it but I've got no luck. I'm willing to start over and reflash everything needed, I just need the files and order to flash.
If i could find out how to fix this Loki issue i could finish this easy.

Can you link me to the rom thread?
If everything else fails, there's always the Kitkat KDZ -> Kitkat autorec (which installs the JELLYBEAN bootloader, the one you're looking for).
Otherwise, have you considered maybe using a 5.1.1 lollipop rom?

My pleasure, thank you for using the Q&A section instead of spamming the development threads like users usually do.
While I can't recommend any rom personally (this leads to uneasiness between developers, publicly saying a rom is better than another is frowned upon and for good reason, as they all bust their asses to deliver something for -free-), I can say that anything that has [CAF] in the title is a green light for you.
You can check here or here. I personally use Euphoria-OS as it's basically what you probably think of cyanogenmod with extra customization, but RR, blisspop crdroid and others are really good, too. You just have to look a tiny bit into it. Many if not all of these threads support multiple variants, just search for ls980 and you're good to go.
There are also developers like @zg85 who have done an amazing job both contributing to the CAF-rebase and building several roms for the d802, although practically none are posted as a thread on XDA. While they're not for your variant, there probably is at least a single developer who doesn't post his builds to XDA for the sprint version.
Lastly, as soon as the CAF rebase is complete (as in completely stable, as at the moment there's a bluetooth bug and some connectivity issues), rashed97 himself will post a CM12.1 build and many other roms will pop up (as the device source will be stable, porting will be really easy).
