My Sprint S4 received the 4.4 update OTA which moved it to version L720TVPUBNAF. I attempted to flash it back to the L720TVPUAMK5 (4.3) version using Odin and the .tar for the stock firmware for this version. Big mistake. Odin failed and now I get the 'Firmware Upgrade Encountered an Issue' upon boot. First I'm hoping there may be a .tar available for the NAF version and I can flash that with Odin through DL mode since DL mode is the only working mode. I have not used Kies so I do not have an image to fall back to. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
at least your not hard bricked..... find a .tar ver. of the naf rom...might be at samsung websight....then Odin it back... sorry i.dont have links at hand, im kinda busy., but they are there... i have not seen naf roms here on xda yet but i could be wrong... im sure it should be here

Just saw you had this thread going too lol hey I know how it is having a bricked phone.
Like these guys said you can ( I guess) flash an NAF based ROM via Odin if you can find one. Or try that other method I linked you to before

I don't see any NAF (tri band) based Roms myself. I don't know IFA NAE ROM would get you very far since it Is different.

There is no full tar file for NAF and probably won't be for several weeks. You NEVER flash older tars with the S4 anymore. Once Samsung implemented the full knox bootloader it prevents you from going backwards. Your best bet if you want your phone to work is to take it to Sprint and tell them the update to Kit Kat failed and they should be able to flash your phone back to NAF, or they will replace it.

I see you were involved in that thread I linked him. That update zip would not help him since the phone is bricked right? I've never gone that route myself so that's why I'm asking. That'd be my take on it right now, I seem to have over looked that when I linked him that.
Also there was a thread on here for the regular l720 that included a couple files and the use of Odin to get people unbricked and then I think able to use an update zip. Have you seen that? Just throwing that out there that's all. That method is a tad more involved but did work for a few people to unbrick their NAE S4's after they tried downgrading to mk2.
Now since that method wasn't for the tri band s4, I think finding the needed files may be hard. Again I'm just tossing this out there to get your feedback.

Thanks for everyone's responses and suggestions. I took the phone to Best Buy and they flashed NAF back on using the Samsung SMART firmware tool they have. As far as some of the other questions, I think a .tar of the NAF firmware would have worked using Odin because I could get into download mode. I don't think a zip would have worked because I could not get into any kind of interactive Recovery mode. Regular boot and attempting to boot to Recovery would take me to the same "Firmware Upgrade Encountered an Issue" screen.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting the followup info after getting your issues squared away. All too often people ask questions and you never know if they got resolved. You also posted HOW your problem was fixed, which can help others in the same boat. Glad to have you here at XDA.

I'm facing the same ordeal oddly enough. Rooted with cf root, Flashed philz touch. Flashed slimkat and gapps, got everything all set up, went to change the DPI with textdroider, rebooted and the phone booted up however DPI didn't change. Tried a few more times with no success and installed resolution change / Density (without reading reviews) and bam! soft bricked. Spent over an hour looking for the NAF ROM and found it on sammobile. Waiting for DL and that has taken well over an hour. Can't believe this ROM is uploaded NO WHERE ELSE. I'll be posted back about results and also if i'm succesful I'm open to sharing this file here on xda so it doesn't take forever to DL!! If someone has a good solution for hosting, i'm all ears
EDIT: Flashing the NAF stock ROM from sammobile worked a treat. However, still kida burned about having to wait so long to reach a resoluton mainly due to horrendously slow DL

There is no original file for mf3. Safestrap is new and I'm curious how you recover from what you did. Hopefully someone else is more helpful but keep us posted on your outcome. It could help someone else.

The SafeStrap instructions CLEARLY state to not touch the stock ROM. So now, you have to treat it like any other bricked MF3 S4. You can try putting it into download mode and then manually canceling out to see if it will boot, but you probably will need to go to a Best Buy and see if they can re-flash it for you.
Take it to your local Best Buy that has a Samsung Experience kiosk. They can restore it to MF3. Tell them Samsung tech support told you to go there and if they have problems to call tech support.

i attempted this guide:http://www.androidrootz.com/2013/06/how-to-unroot-unbrick-galaxy-s4.html. says "failed" everytime. trying a new .tar file
Samething happend to me and best buy n my area doesn't have samsung expereince so I'm trying thngs out my self if anyone happens to have the mf3 update.zip that would be very helpful

Well I'm not an expert here... but if you have MF3 baseband which one from here http://www.androidrootz.com/p/galaxy-s4-stock-firmwares.html are you trying to flash because I can't see the MF3 ... And that could be the reason why it's failing
There is no ODIN/Kies for MF3 unfortunately. This has been discussed for the past weeks since MF3 came out
Your only option now is either take it to a Best Buy Samsung Kiosk and get it flashed to stock MF3 without the need to warranty:

If you're on the mf3 firmware you are not going to be able to flash mdl. When the firmware is updated a qfuse is blown on the internal circuitry which will not allow it to down grade the firmware. You're just wasting your time. Take it to best buy.

I'm having a similar problem, i went to best buy and told the samsung guy that my phone won't boot after kies tried to update and if he could flash the firmware for me. He put it into download mode and tried something and said it wouldn't go through. Then he tried to do a factory reset through recovery which i told him i have already tried and it didn't work. Then i asked if he could call samsung for assistance, after doing so he put it back into download mode and was asked by samsung to read the information in the top left corner, after he read the part that said custom the guy at samsung said there was nothing that could be done because its rooted... The guy at best buy obviously had no idea what he was doing, should I try a different best buy and ask them specifically to flash the mf3 firmware? (I rooted my s4 and accidentally wiped the stock rom, now it wont boot past the samsung logo with the unlock icon underneath. i'm able to go into odin mode and recovery mode but recovery shows android with red exclamation mark. I tried recovery through kies and that failed also.) If best buy is able to flash the mf3 firmware update would that fix my phone?

how it
I'm not exactly sure, but this sounds similar to the problem I had. You can read my post here to see if this is the same problem. I solved my issue via this post. Downloading the files took a couple tries (the website kept freezing), but flashing them through Odin worked the first time. Turns out AOSP-based mods won't work with SafeStrap, and you shouldn't write over the stock ROM. I made both mistakes. Here is a thread with a list of ROMs working with SafeStrap.

Shockndrop got all the MF3 files to flash with Odin from a Best Buy.
Make sure to thank him if you use it. He saved a lot of people by taking the risk getting that.
Here's the story:
I got my S4 late last year, and decided to use qbking77's root technique to root my phone. After the 4.3 update, I no longer had root. Also, I had the wifi issue plaguing many S4 users at the moment. So I thought maybe re-rooting would solve my problem, but apparently qbking's method no longer works. So, being a crafty individual, I decided to revert to 4.2.2. I downloaded L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_L720VPUAMF9_HOME.tar from samsung-updates and used ODIN to load it. Soon after starting the download, I received a FAIL notification in ODIN and an error in the download screen on my phone as follows:
SW REV CHECK FAIL : FUSED : 4, BINARY : 1
I have tried many versions of ODIN but cannot get the file to load. I really don't want to deal with Sprint over this matter, so any help would be appreciated.
[I am also downloading the 4.3 version from samsung-updates at the moment, but I have to get to bed, so I will try tomorrow.]

Grab the MK2 tar (OR MJA) - THERY'RE HERE LOOK.
Flash that in PC Odin and you'll be fine
Spend some time and read and you'll be Okay.

THANK you for reporting back! That is what this community is all about.
Since you have the lates firmware (MJA or MK2) you can now go root, install recovery (via PC Odin or goomanager) and then flash what you wish.
BUT please take some time to read through the developers OPs and followup posts - different ROMs require different recoveries and wipe methods. Recoveries can be switched in recovery too.
Good luck
Hi guys,
I came across this post while searching XDA as I am getting the same error (SW REV CHECK FAIL : FUSED : 4, BINARY : 1) when I try to install "L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_L720VPUAMF9_HOME.tar" via various versions of ODIN.
A little background on my phone:
Sprint GS2 L720 that I bought used. The phone gets stuck on the yellow Sprint screen during boot-up. I don't have the whole story but apparently he tried to flash the phone and did so with the incorrect ROM. Rather than try to fix the phone he decided to sell it for cheap so he found a sucker (me) to buy it hoping that I could fix it. I don't have a problem getting the phone into download mode, just can't get the TAR file to install correctly. Since I've never had this phone in working condition I don't know what firmware is on the phone.
I'm sorry if this is a dumb or basic question but I'm completely new at this so any help you can give me in laymen's terms (or links to threads I should read or files I should install) would be greatly appreciated.
LeaderBuilder- You mentioned installing recovery via ODIN? Would you mind elaborating on this. I Googled "Install Recovery with ODIN S4" and came up with videos and links using ClockworkMod and TWRP but I'm not sure if this is what you were referring to. I just hesitant because I don't want to make matters worse or hardbrick my phone.
Anybody willing to respond and help me out- THANKYOU!!!

You are trying to install an older version of the stock tar. Once your phone has been upgraded to MJA or newer you cannot install older tar files. You can download the newest stock tar for are phone from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601443
Install using odin 3.07 or newer. Good luck.
Thanks Cruise,
I read through all of the posts on the link that you sent and according to the original poster, flashing that TAR will trip the KNOX which sounds undesirable and potentially dangerous (at least according to the second poster). Is this my best best or only option? Sorry if that's a dumb question but like I said, I'm new to all of this and I really don't want to hard brick my phone. Ideally I'd like to get this to boot properly and bring it back to stock but it sounds like bringing it back to stock might not be an option at this point. Thanks again for your input and the link!

And it will NOT trigger Knox because it is a stock unmodified tar straight from Samsung/Sprint.

I got news for you, your Knox is already tripped. If the previous owner had already tried to root and install a custom rom that ship has sailed. Installing a stock tar does not trip Knox, installing a custom recovery does.

Hey guys,
Just wanted to follow-up and let you know that your suggestions worked and that I'm now up and running. THANK YOU ALL for your help and suggestions!
Background.....not new to flashing and used to be a flashaholic but I am new to flashing Samsung.I never saw the need to root or rom my S4 because well, it's a good performer for me, unlike my previos HTCs which I flashed to hell and back.
I am on stock MK2....no custom recovery and never rooted. Took the new KitKat NAE update this morning and it failed in recovery and rebooted. Downloaded the NAE.zip from here after that to manually flash in recovery myself. Update failed again but was able to see why this time....failed signature verification... Phone did reboot successfully again and functioning well, but if this isn't fixed I'm gonna be stuck on Jellybean....
I believe a previous update may have been corrupted....may have been from MK2 or even MJA. Since one of those 2 updates "Help" (system app InteractiveTutorial.apk) force closes upon start-up every time and when opened. Even tried a factory reset with same results. I believe this to be the culprit.
My question is where do I go from here to be able to install stock KitKat? Can I reflash a full stock MK2 in Odin to cure the obvious corruption? If so, which version of Odin would you suggest? Any special instruction?
Any help is very much appreciated.
I really need to know if you can flash back to mk2 after taking the 4.4.2 update too because the update didn't flash the new modem on my phone and wifi isn't working so I wanna retry it lol.

Wow. BTW, after spending about 3 hours trying to navigate XDA's notoriously horrible search feature, I did find my answer. Yes, 3 hours.....
Churchey, I hope you find your answer as well. From what I have read, it works fine for MK2 and MJA but haven't read anything pertaining to going back to MK2 from NAE

Thanks guys
my Computer crashed on me a few weeks back and I lost pretty much all my files. Thankfully my personal files were all backed up, but none of my phone modification files survived. I meant to post here to ask for links and such, but couldn't remember what exactly I had. Then an update hits my phone. Never ever had luck updating a rooted phone. Always just ended up ignoring the icon until I got a new one. Well now there's TWO updates that I've fallen behind on......Better figure it out. So. Please. Help.
Info on phone:
Sprint L720T on MK5 Rooted stock rom.
My Question(s)
How to either un-root to get the updates OTA,
OR
How to flash updated stock roms
I've used odin, obviously, to flash the rooted stock. Pretty sure I used cf's autoroot. I just need a Link to Odin and a brief run down of what I'm trying to do. I may fire back a question or two.
I saw a post on flashing what I believe was a stock 4.3 and then up to 4.4.2. Well that's awesome, but I've TWO updates. Is 4.4.2 the newest? And why am I seeing numbers for jellybean, when I typically see things like "NAE" or "MK5".
And why is it sooo easy to root a bloody phone, but a nightmare to UNROOT said phone? Would think that "click, click....and bam. back to normal". Unfortunately, either I'm looking at the wrong things or I really do have to track down stock files for my specific model to re-flash with odin, then accept OTA, then re-root....?
If so, that SEEMS simple enough, but finding stock for my SPECIFIC model is....frustrating. So please, kind folks, help me out with some direct links to what I need?
Pretty sure answers to the question posted above exist on XDA
Use odin to flash L720TVPUAMK5_L720TSPTAMK5_L720TVPUAMK5_HOME.tar.md5
Use the stock recovery to factory reset.
Phone is now unrooted.
.
This^^ there are tutorials and videos on YouTube that show how to use Odin. All you do is place the tar on the PDA section.

I have a verizon note 3 I ordered from insurance when my last note 3 finally bit the dust. My previous phone was running jasmine and stock using safestrap. I strove to do the samewith this phone. Instead, when attempting to use towelroot, it said my phone was no longer supported. I tried to find a viable nc2 and couldn't for the last week. Most links on this website are dead because note 3 is hardly supported anymore. I finally found one, one developed by hrsbad or one someone claimed was, the custom note 3 nc2. When I flashed it using odin, i get an error that pops up with Samsung splash screen, "kernel is not seaandroid enforcing" It then takes me to a yellow exlaimation point with "system software not authorized by verizon wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest verizon wireless store for help. Is there anything i can do? Im sure there's a wiz out there who knows an easier solution.
I would appreciate your help very greatly, and if you could explain to me why i couldnt; use safestrap and even suggest how i could root an alternate way that would be super amazing. Thanks for any help you might be able to lend.
I have attemtped to flash all the nc2 and nc4 finally succeeding with one that had previously failed. The kernel error no longer appears and my phone is behaving normally. I have 4.4.4 and would like to root it, are there any options anyone knows of? Towelroot does not support my version, Im open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Thanks for your reply again, but I was wrong. I didn't try any of these because all the links I'd be interested in are no longer being served. Is there anywhere else I can get this at, or anything else I can do. Thank you again I really appreciate it.
thanks for your reply. did try the nc2 in AP spot of odin and it bricked my phone temporarily. Did I use the wrong one? or should I have used multiples of those to do it properly?
do you remember what firmware you were running before going full root? you'll want to get that img to flash. maybe nc4?

I have put nc4 back on. This is how the phone was shipped. But I was unable to root with towelroot, I am still without root. And that is the crux ofmy questions now, is where can I get nc2 so I can use towelroot, or is there a better method than that?
what I have tried
nc2kernel.tar.md5
VZW-N900VVRUCNC4-20140512165349
n900v_kk_firmware.tar.md5
It has been very difficult finding these files online, sammobile is where I got one of them, the other two were from a hsrbad post, a comment from "Dutchboy" who still hosted these files lead me to them.
it's hard to say if those work, what I'm trying to determine is the original firmware your phone was running before all of this. I'm not super good at this just fyi.. haha. i usually look for the modem and firmware for the "original" firmware from before rooting.

Sorry for the late response. School and work are kicking my butt. The original is hard to say, I attempted like five different roms after noticing that mine could not be towelrooted. all of these romsfailed, and one finally raised an exception with the security that temporarily soft bricked my phone, I found a nc4 on sammbile that was able to remedy that, but I'd like most of all to get this rooted and safestrapped again so i can dualboot as i had previously. I'm also pretty novice but i enjoy the attempting to do this stuff, even when it ends in me bricking my phone for the day :good:
so have you been able to get your phone running?

Towelroot was supposed to work on NC4.
You can not flash any ROM lower than NC4 due to bootloader. There is also supposedly a rooted NC4 here that you can flash...but towelroot should work.

Thank you both for your replies.
Towelroot had previously worked , this is an insurance replacement as mine bit the dust. I went to towelroot and to my great sadness does not work. I am using:
4.4.4
sm-n900v
n900vvrudnj6
kernel 3.4.0
Truly I'm novice so Im not positive if any of this can help or not, but do you know of a way I can towelroot?
