Question about charging. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So hard wiring a charger in my car. I ordered a 3amp one and instead recieved a 5amp one.
So if I go ahead and wire up the 5amp will it be alright or is this putting too much strain on the tablets safety mechanism?

That is the thing I bought. Slightly confused when it says the input side is 12v 3amp with the output side being 5amp? Unsure how this is even possible.

It's a 3 Amp and 5.0 Volt.
Edit: corrected at to and, That dumb iPhone wouldn't let go back in. Kept getting an error with a bunch of numbers.

So... Sounds safe.
Going to be cutting a USB cable, soldering the power wires(will need to Google which ones those are) so will be hard wiring it into the ac side and then directly to the power side of the otg cable. Guessing it's the black and red wire and then short the data wires (2 in the middle) To hopefully make it pull as much as it can.
Can anyone think of why this wouldn't work? Decently sure I am good to go but figured I should ask before I possibly blow stuff up

The red and black wires are positive and negative and the white and green are data if the charger is 12v input and the power is 15 watts then 15w÷5v=3a. The nexus will only draw as much current as it needs (about 1 - 2 amps) . As long as the voltage is 5 then your golden. On a safety note use a multi meter and CHECK the voltage BEFORE plugging in the tablet. The protective circuitry on the nexus 7 leaves a lot to be desired and won't stop a voltage surge. I know this because I'm trying to repair mine just now because of a surge from a faulty charger.

Thanks for the solid response. I have been tossing around throwing a fuse in line after the DC to DC converter. Unsure where I will find a 2amp fuse though.

Since it can draw 3 Amps go with 3 amp fuse. 3 amp fuses are available at most every car store out there as well as Radio Shack! Good luck!!!

Didn't think the nexus could draw over 1.8amps? Was going to put the fuse after the converter as a first line of defense type thing

Bare copper wire in the shielding is? And should I do anything with it besides cut it down?
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk

I cut it off because I couldn't find a use for it. About to connect everything and well if it goes bad I will be posting lots of photos and crowd sourcing where I might have gone wrong.

And so far everything seems to be running correctly. I didn't have my multimeter so not exact numbers but hasn't blown the 2amp fuse and keeps the tablet more or less charged. It's just barely with everything running.

Hi sorry I haven't been on for a while you are right with the wires the copper shielding is only important if you are using the cable for data sync otherwise just cut it away

I just lengthened my power cord

It's been so annoying having the power cord to be so short. And I don't want to spend like 30 bucks for something longer. So, I just cut it up in half, insert in between 6 feet of cable, and voila! Testing it now. Just saw the power % go from 93 to 94. Woohoo, success!
nice! What cable did you use?
I just use a 6-foot one of these to plug the OEM charger into:

I have a kazillion adaptors lying around. I just cut the cord from one of those and insert.

Haha. What's cleaner than an extension cord? Splicing together multiple cords and covering with electrical tape?
I did something similar. Took an old USB cable, nipped the connector and stripped the cables. Used the ground of the USB cable for the ground on the adapter. I ended up using 3 of the USB cables to get some better gauge on the wire to the + of the adapter. Works great! Put some heat shrink on and it looks awesome.

Just kidding -- I know what you're saying. And to be honest, Acer has got to be the cheapest bastards in the entire tablet industry for not adding US$0.20 worth of wire to make the the charger an industry standard length. I mean, c'mon...is two feet of wire really that much of a production deal-breaker for them?
But back on your project, personally, I would only do what you did with an extra or maybe 3rd-party charger -- not the OEM one. But that's just me. I'd rather just use the extension cord until a longer, cheap alternative charger is found.
You still get a "Thanks" from me (if for no other reason than tolerating my smart-a$$ remarks)!

Great find! The original charger bought seperately is $14.95 at Walmart, and still only 2 ft. long!
BTW does anyone know if Xoom's charger would work with A500, the plug seems as big as the Acer's?
Does anyone has the exact dimension of the connector ? int/ext diameter ?
Standard one seems to be 0.7mm int and 2.5mm ext, but I have nothing precise enough to confirm
Edit:
as stated by FloatingFatMan, it's 3*1mm connector:

Heh that's pretty bad.. My only problem has been battery drain while running GPS and Pandora simultaneously in the car. The phone is capable of pulling more than 700mA when you utilize all of the hardware, so there is no way to keep a net positive charge current. Also when the battery gets too hot (above 45°C, I believe), the phone will stop charging to prevent the battery from exploding
Geez what kind of USB cables do you guys use? I dont even use the stock cable that Samsung gave me, i got a blackberry one. Works great. Rim isnt dead yet lol

I use the cheap long cables from Monoprice.. or the stock cable, or whatever I have laying around. I throw out the cables when they get flaky -- but my problem wasn't related to the cable like OP's was.

I had the same problem charging in car. if using usb to charge it charges at 300mah but a/c charges at 600mah. so if you are using usb and have an extra cable you can short the green and white wires(going to phone) and this will trick it into thinking its on a/c. have not had any problems since doing this. i can go on a 6 hour drive with gps and music streaming and still arive fully charged.
I would like to see pictures if you have some.
I've seen this symptom with a bad flash. Something was using a ton of charge. More than my charger could put out. Hence, battery drain when plugged in.

i do not have pictures. i use heat shrink on my wires so i cant take apart to get any but if i can find another cable i will modify it and take some. it is a simple modification. just carefully cut the black casing from around wires(anywhere along cable, remove about 2 inches) without cutting wires inside. you should have 4 wires(black ground, red 5v+, white data -, green data +) cut the white and green wires then splice them together(the ends going to phone) seal it back up and your good to go. this is just simulating plugging into your a/c adapter. all the adapter is doing is converting a/c to 5v d/c and shorting data wires to tell phone its plugged into wall. usb is already running at 5v d/c so you just have to provide your own way of shorting data. you can ohm out your cable if you like to verify. 4 pins on conector 2 center ones are for data. they are open until you plug into a/c adapter at which point you will get short.
The cable did the same thing on my girlfriend's phone, too. Phone thinks it's charging, therefor no deep sleep, and it just discharges. It may be the cable/charger combo, thogh, but I KNOW the cable is certainly fault; I tried it with other chargers.

I actually had the charger port on my phone stop working, but Android still showed it was charging. I tried multiple combinations of cords and chargers, only to take it into Sprint for a replacement.
When it first started, it only seemed to happen on certain cords and in certain positions, but eventually, it stopped charging altogether.

Best US Note Charger, Fixed Issues, and Cheap Too!

Just wanted to tell my fellow US Note users that I found what I deem to be a great deal for a fantastic US charger.
I didn't have a converter to use the supplied European charger, so I used my old Motorola Droid X wall wart and USB cable. It worked fine, but I noticed that it made my touch screen a little less sensitive. For instance, it might make my Swypes on the keyboard break into separate lines, confusing Swype. It charged my phone, but the battery got warm; I thought all of this was normal. I tried another charger, an LG one, just to see if that changed anything, but it worked about the same.
Then from reading around, I realized that the standard charger is a 5v 1.0A charger and both chargers I was using were 5.1v 750mA/850mA chargers. I immediately started searching for a direct replacement and only after a long search I found a Palm Pre charger with the exact specs as our Note's.

I assumed it would charge faster being a 1A charger, and it does, but what I didn't expect is what pleases me the most: the screen sensitivity when charging is immensely improved (Swype is exactly like without the charger in) and the battery stays dead cool! It is around 5c cooler according to SetCPU. Just awesome!
I'm so pleased I wanted to share. I hope this helps others who may have experienced similar issues.
The link is below (not sure if I can link directly to an Amazon item, hope this isn't against the rules.) It's super cheap and the quality is top notch! Soft touch plastic on the wall wart and also the USB cable! I just bought another as a backup. It's only 3.49 w/ free shipping!
BTW I bought it from "BobTronics" because some reviews said they got what might not be genuine Palm USB cables from other sellers. Mine is legit; it has the palm cable tie and feels high quality.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002ITKQKU/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
P.S. I am in no way affiliated w/ the item or the seller. Just wanted to share a good buy that others might be interested in.
As a Palm Pilot -> Tungsten -> Palm Pre ->-->Pre 2 user I have to agree.
I have numerous chargers, some even labelled at 1.0 AMP, but none as good as the Palm charger. Just well built, FULL 1.0 Amp, and so pocket able.
Now if only I could put my Note on my Touchstone - I find the Samsung Dock and connector sooooo clumsy after the Touchstone.

I wonder if that causes any unnecessary stress/strain on the battery or the phone itself. I was worried about the heat that came off of my phone w/ the Droid & LG chargers, probably more due to the 5.1v rather than the amperage though.
I have the same chargers that came with my HP Touchpad during the fire sale. They are excellent chargers and I also use them on my non HP mobile devices as well.

Note's circuit limits the charge current at 1 amp.
2 amp Improvement is imaginary/placebo as charge times are exactly similar to 1 amp.
I have a Galaxy Tab charger rated at 2amps and it takes exa tly the same time to do a full charge as with the bundled charger at 1 amp.
Hence, no need to worry about temperatures.

Volt stays the same, amp changes. It's a USB port charger, it'll always be 5V. You could plug in a 5V 2.1A (meant for tablets) charger into your Nexus 4 and it won't charge any higher than 1A or so. These sort of protections have been in phones for awhile now.
For directness sake, my Motorola Droid chargers (plus 1 car charger) worked with my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4. I am still using them in fact, along with the Samsung charger that came with the GN and the LG charger that came with the N4.
And what you're looking for is a plug type converter/adapter. Looks like

You can use any other adapter. The Nexus will only draw the amount of power it needs to charge so don't worry about it. It won't overcharge or anything.

Note 4 WIRELESS CHARGING Pins

Any ideas which are the wireless pins on the Note 4? I am asking because I don't want to wait for the wireless pads to show up on Ebay... I am planning to modify a similar wireless pad and adjust it for the Note 4 in the meantime...lol (I did that already with the Note 3...by using the Note 2 wireless pad inverted...)
My guess is that the 3 pins in vertical alignment in the upper right are the pins...

ATT is fully behind PMA now, so they requested their version of the LG G3 to not have Qi charging pins, instead opting for PMA pins. This meant that even if you bought the Qi Charging back covers for the LG G3, it still wouldn't be compatible with the phone.
While I'm super hopeful that the Note 4 will retain the Qi Charging pins, this agreement was only very recently, so we can't rely on the same treatment that the the S5 was given (allowed to keep Qi pins).

I went ahead and purchased a receiver coil that is designed for the S5. The pin layout looks the same as the Note 4. It only cost $15 so its no big thing if it doesnt work.

Just received my wireless charging pad and tested out the pins. So look at the picture above... there are 2 pins that needs contact. The first is the top pin (the single pin) on the right hand side. The second is the second pin down on the left hand side. Hope this helps. It should be pretty self explanatory when you receive your charging pads as there are only a few possible positions, so even if you don't know the pins just move it around and you'll find the right pins.
I have the T-Mobile Note 4. The charging pads I got were from Ebay. They were about $10 each. Good quality, very thin, and is working fine. Shipping took awhile, about 2 weeks. Hope this helps.

Could you just edit the picture in paint to show the pins and the polarity? It's just more helpful. Thanks

also says - here i found on a video from a cover that works
at 0:21 you can see the pins. 3 of them are being used so i guess nfc is included in this cover.
PS :it would be great if somewone who has already this cover can take a multimeter and measure to see wich are the pins with the voltage out.
