Different charging option?

I'm not sure if this is even possible and sorry if it has already been answered, but is there a way to make the A500 micro usb port actually charge the tablet? I know it doesn't charge thru that port now, but is there a mod that can be done via software tweaking; or is it a hardware issue that can't be changed? It would be nice to charge the A500 with a micro usb cord and especially in the car with my Thunderbolt's car charger.

Microusb does not put out enough juice to charge tablets effectively.

From what I understand, the USB connection won't provide enough current to charge the batteries sufficiently, so I would say no. This is the same on the iPad as well, no USB charge like is possible with the iPhone. The dock (shown on the Acer website) will at least allow another charging option, albeit probably not what you had in mind. Best thing to do is probably just get a power inverter for your car and plug it in.

I don't think there is enough electrical current through the USB port to charge the device effectively. As USB can only give you 5v 900mA, this device requires 12v 1.5A to charge.

Oh, gotcha. Thanks everybody, it makes sense about not putting out enough juice. I wondered if it didn't charge maybe because Acer didn't design for it to, and it was strictly for data transfer; which it is.

I've always wondered why they didn't include one of the double ended USB plugs like DVD burners over USB use. Still 2 x 5V x 500mA(900mA is USB 3.0 only) isn't the same as 12 x 1.5.
Personally, mine gets it's power from it's molecular density's proximity to our yellow sun. I've also named it Zod.

I got this car adapter from Wal-Mart (it's a universal adapter - Powerline Model #90293). It's a 12V 2A adapter (originally bought it for a Viewsonic G Tablet...couldn't find a 1.5A version). It works well with the A500...the adapter plug sticks out a little bit, but it's not a big deal.

As long as the amperage is higher and the quality is as good or better, any DC adapter would work. It just needs to fit in the hole.

No. It's simply not wired to charge the tablet. For the same reason you can't charge your laptop via the USB port.

Ok since USB charging is out of the question I have another. People who have used the Xoom, is the Acer's charging port the same as the one on the Xoom? The Xoom has an official car charger, but just by looking I can't tell if they are the same size ends.

You could probably head out to BestBuy or Staples etc.. and compare the 2. They should be side by side. Otherwise, I'm sure Acer (or some other 3rd party) will probably release a car charger that plugs into the proprietary port on the bottom?

From what I remember, the Motorola charging port is like a little thin nubbit. I think the plug on our Acer is larger. Check it out and post some pics.

My charger's head got broken into half just now ==! Hopefully can get the warranty.

Car charging whilst on GPS

I have used my new Nexus4 on the road with google navigation. I was surprised to find out that the 1Amp samsung charger I have used with my SGS2 was not able to maintain the charge of the phone. After couple of hours of driving my Nexus 4 died ( I didn't start with full battery)
What is your experience? I would expect the phone not only to work whilst on cable for the whole time, but also to eventually charge the phone fully.
Now I am not sure if it is my charger or nexus 4.
I had a look on mains charger and the output is 1.2Amp, is this the problem, that the car charger is not powerful enough?

I currently use CAD300UBE, which is the official i9300 car charger, with a rated output of 700mA.
When streaming over bluetooth using Spotify, and using Google Navigation I can say that this charger does charge the phone.
My old S2 charger, also genuine did not manage to charge my S3, hence the replacement.

My recollection is that Nexus devices are looking for pins 2 and 3 (data) of the charger to be shorted. If they are not, you'll only get 500ma from the supply.

Turn the screen of when not needed in navigation,

I use a kensington 2A flush cigarette lighter so it isn't an issue, the charger is <$15, and it makes life easier when I want to charge my ipad. Only thing I regret about the charger is that I didn't get the dual port version.

I posted this in the GN forum about a year ago when the same sort of problems were coming up there. You need a 2A charger and a data only cable to make you charge like you are on a wall charger. (Charging AC - Check this by going to Settings > Battery, the top shows charging AC.

I just checked my charger and it does say 700mA and also shows charging as AC. But in reality the charger was not able to charge the phone whilst on navigation.

Official HTC car charger charges my N4 effectively despite bluetooth + CoPilot/Google Navigation without issue.

Mine too, but I actually installed a dedicated 2 amp, isolated supply in my truck, shorted pins 2 and 3 on the USB connections on the board with a couple of beads of solder, and get full charging current on both my Nexus 4 and 7.

This was always a problem even on my Gnex, so what i did is i bought a 2amp car charger, no more discharging while using... you can find them at bestbuy or futureshop if you're in Canada.

Slow charging? get a better cable(with proof)

Yesterday I just bought a new 8000mah power bank(ProMini 8000), which has 2.1A output but I still not very satisfy with the charge speed compare to the stock Note 2 lte charger.
So I did some experiments, found out charge speed have A LOT to do with the quality of cables! Going to share the result with you guys.

This app. Lies, I got an poor cable clone for Samsung 10.1 tab, and this app tells my note is charging at 1600mah, while it actually was charging at low power usb mode (measured using an multimeter).
Back on my original note 2 cable the app still show 1600 mah and my note was changing at full 1950mah measured on my multimeter.
Was easy to me coz I have an Short usb extension which I peel ti access the positive wire ( I cut it and connected my multimeter to both segment . in series scheme).
So it easy and accurate way to check if some cable actually charges at full current.
The app offered actually don't work accurately (if it's real purpose is it)

Final proof was my note 2 stop charging with fake cable and only drains about 300 mah and of course never charges, while this app still shows 1650-1680. The note actually don't charges.

Good emergency replacement Cable are the ones for HTC Sony and those charging cables that comes with power banks and which uses multiple interchangeable tips to match different connectors, my note 2 think it's an true usb Samsung cable.

I just bought a Note 2 recently, T889 (T-mobile). I noticed it charges alright when plugged into my comp with the stock cable.
Now I use the stock AC adapter near my bed, but I attached a extended USB cable (10-15ft) and connected a USB to MicroUSB after that. I noticed charging my Note 2 that after 8 hours, it only charged from 60%-97%. Ridiculous. If I turn the screen on while plugged into that setup and not do anything heavy tasking to the phone, my battery would drain down even while charging.

I'd guess this is normal. Basic facts : ÜSB is a 5V-powered bus, and a 1.1 port pumps out 500mA (to all the devices connected to a same root hub on the motherboard), and the USB3 norm raised this current to 900mA, not even half of what your wallcharger provides.
I seem to recall the USB2 spec. sheet only guarantees a 500mbits/s data throughput if the cable is 1.5m or smaller in lenghth, because of inline losses. and since a datastream is nothing more than waves of current pumped into a wire, the same applies to the current a USB lead provides : the longer the cable, the more current will be lost along the way, until there's nothing left to provide.. Low-voltage current is absolutely not transportable over long distances, that's the reason why we have hi-voltage lines all across our landscapes, and the reason why you see hi-to-lo-voltage converters at every streetcorner in the US and not in europe : european 240V current can be transported (once 'downvolted' from 20kV,5kV or 380V) over up to 100m without inline losses becoming too high, US 110V current barely over 20-25m... So a 5V-powered cable, well you do the math m8

It has nothing to do with the cable. It was a rom issue. I changed roms and have not had the same issue.
I went from same charge setup (while able to drain while plugged in and phone in use), switched roms and all of a sudden it is able to charge up even while in use.

Not trying to be a spoilsport, but this has already been extensively discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2112811. So there isnt much use for this thread.
As for the OP, the cost/quality of the wire doesnt matter. What matters is that the wire should offer less resistance to the current, or in other words should be as short and thick as possible. Check page 6 of the link above. I brought a $5 generic cable and it has been working perfectly for me since...full charge in around 130-150 minutes.
The app simply copies information stored in sys/class/power_supply/battery/current_avg, and if the app is wrong then that means that your system is giving you wrong information.

Z3C Battery Charging Thread

I' hoping this is the right section to post this in.
I don't have my Z3C yet, but I've been searching for information on charging speed, charging current etc. - and there is barely anything to be found. What seems to be consent: A full charge (0-100%) takes about three hours. But then, some people say an almost full charge (0-90%) takes much less, as charging current is greatly reduced for the last 10% to reduce stress on the battery. Sony itself also claims that a small charge (something like 0-10%) should be quite fast as well.
Then there's some speculation about QuickCharge 2.0 being used or not used, that you could use a Motorola 2.0A charger to charge it faster than with the provided 1.5A Sony charger etc., which also brings up the question which resistor values on the D+ and D- wires are necessary to toggle different charging currents. (Or I might be stupid and there's a standard for that by now, which is the same for all Qualcomm devices.)
To cut it short: I'd request those who have a Z3C to post some comments about their charging times, and at best even their charging currents. I used an app called BatteryMonitor on my Desire HD, I'm sure there's others around now that give the same information. If someone could try out different chargers and record charging current over time, maybe even with a pretty graph, it'd surely help all future discussions about chargers, docks, modifications, DIY charging issues etc.
[EDIT] I've created a similar thread over at the Z3 forums, as many things (such as resistor values and charging tactics) should be similar.

With the 1.5A charger it's almost the same speed as other flagships: about 1% per minute or so.

Because it's more difficult for me to get the Moto Turbo Charger from where I live, I ordered another quick charger on the list and will see how it works.

Sorry for the delay. It's obvious that QC 2.0 works only when battery is really low. Not sure it's Sony's control thru hardware, or kernel, or charger's control.

My Galaxy Note charger + magnetic dock charges pretty fast.

In europe (France), i can't a site for buying one :s Can anyone help me please?

Superfast Charging 2.0 adapter. Alternative to the Official one

Afternoon you lovely lot!.
Just sharing a decent little find nestled amongst all the Amazon prime day tat, that's flying around.
If anyone's looking for an alternative to the official Sammy 45w superfast charger, i grabbed this one yesterday and got it today.

Just ordered one of these to boost my Tab S7 or S20 Ultra when needed.

I am curious how fast it charges? I have the 25W samsung from my Note 10 plus. It's also displays super fast charging and charges the s7+ quite quickly.

This charger shows Super fast charging 2.0,
Twice as fast than the 15w charger.
30 minutes gets my S20 ultra from 0->88%, it then slows to protect the battery.

Good as it gets; any faster is going to degrade the battery lifespan more rapidly. With the 25 watt brick it knocks some of the lifespan off even you practice conservative charging cycles.
Just replaced my 1.5 yo Note 10+ battery. It was swollen and pressing on the display.
I was lucky that it didn't damage the display.
With a battery failure there's more to lose than just the battery. Higher temperatures and charge rates increase the risk of a problematic failure

No issues with my Note 10+(also got on day 1), battery still good for a day+. No swelling.

It happened suddenly after a 100% charge one night. After which fast charging became erratic.
It was well over a month later that the swelling was spotted as it lives in it's case.
These bag batteries are scary fragile
Take one apart to see what I mean.
