How to fix lag with android 4.4.2 roms - Xperia Z General

As you all probably already know there is some serious lag regarding the drop down shade in pretty much every ROM. Over clocking the ROM or boosting your performance doesn't solve the lag. So after all these attempts I nearly gave up but have found a way to minimize the intensity of the drop down shade lag. Its a very simple fix in oder to do it you need a ROM that supports the cyanogen mod theme changer I recommend liquid smooth ROM. All you need to do is download the HTC one theme by thomassfaca from the play store true this isn't a proper fix and will take away from the stock experience of the ROM but i think its better than dealing with the terrible lag that KitKat has brought with the drop down shade
Here is the link to the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thomassafca.theme.htcsense
Hope this helps it has seemed to work for me if u don't want the HTC theme try another one but beware some make the lag worse this is the best I've found so far

And with xposed framework you may download a module to enable custom transitions or If u r using liquid smooth this feature is built in. Using custom transitions will further remove ui lag

i never had any lag with dropdown.

i noticed this too
i had CM10.2 on my htc incredible S with the laggy dropdown notification
then i applied an xperia theme and it went a lot smoother lol
magic.

[Q] Poor image quality in CM7 (Possibly 12 or 16 bit?)

So I recently downgraded to CM7 just because I wanted something more stable than the ICS/JB ROMs I'd been using. First thing I noticed is the horrible image quality throughout the system; stuff like gradients and the overscroll effect look like bad JPEGs.
The only thing I could think of was to enable 16-bit transparency in the CM settings and edit the build.prop to force GPU rendering, but neither of those did anything.
Anyone know what I could do to fix this or do I just need a better ROM?
Thanks in advance.

Understand that the CM roms are run through with a fine tooth comb before they are released ass a stable mod.
Try a diffrent launcher and see if that is still the case .

I definitely understand that. I was running CM10.1 for a while and it was the most stable (albeit unofficial) JB rom I'd had on here so far, so that's why I decided to switch to an official release - and everything's great, aside from the poor quality on gradients.

I noticed it from the beginning on ADW launcher and have since tried out ADW EX, Next Launcher, Smart Launcher, GO Launcher and a few more with no luck.

When i use to run cm7 on thee mytouch 3g there was a surface dithering option maybe that can help tho i did not see the diffrence.Do you have the inferrrior mt4g screen?
try one of thier nightly builds and if that is no diffrent then that is just how cm7 looks.

I've tried with and without surface dithering, still didn't make a difference. I remember looking when I first got this phone and it turned out that I got the good screen, plus I've flashed like 20 different ROMs and the graphics are always great. I actually just downloaded the latest nightly, so I'll give that a try.
Welp, flashing the latest nightly didn't help. I guess I'll just switch to a better ROM -_-
You might have luck by changing dpi.

[Q] Window and Transition animations

The only thing keeping me away from 4.x roms are window, status bar and transition animations.
On some roms, the transition animations are fine, but window animations bug. They dont fade. The zoom out, but dont fade. Its horriffic. I experienced that on NexusHD2 ROMs.
On others, windows animations are fine, but transitions lag horribly. Unusable.
Whats the catch? Lib? HWA? Bad blcks? Framework codes?
The only rom where everything is smooth is Evervolv (4.2.2). But it had bugs, so unusable.
On 2.x roms everything is silky smooth.
For me, 4.0 (ICS) was smooth, really smooth and transition was fine, but about JB I used to have the same question and I thought about it a lot, but I couldn't find an answer. I tried all methods from seeders to overclocking and optimisation to no avail. I just gave up and turned off animation from developer settings. Then I found out that it's just the old age of the device when I tried different devices with android on them. I'm afraid there's nothing that can be done about them, but if you do find a way please let me know.
You can use xui mod xposed module, so you can chose the animations that are more suitable for you..

Thanks, but we are not talking about the kind of animation, we're talking about the animation fluidity.

I used to use NexusHD2 as well, the early versions... I'm not sure if he changed things or not (I don't use my HD2 anymore) and it's been a long time. But it was definitely much better than JB in terms of transition and animation.

There's just no way to get rid of the lag

I know, it's a 2 year old phone with just 1GB RAM and TouchWiz on top of it.
I've spent the last 2 days trying a LOT of roms to try to make the phone feel faster, because I don't want to buy a new one. I really like this one. The camera is AMAZING, decent battery life, love blocking mode, etc. As a phone it works great: good speaker, strong vibration, great signal, etc.
But there's one single thing that makes this phone feel "old": the speed. Just the speed. If it were faster and more fluid then there would be absolutely no reason to upgrade to the new phones (except, well, maybe more RAM and battery).
Yesterday I tried like 15 AOSP roms: CM11, temasek, ultimaAOSP, NeatROMAOSP, Vanir, AOKP, SlimKat, etc.
Nothing. It's slightly faster, but the problem is the animations. They just look wrong all the time. There's frame drops everywhere. And bugs and crashes, so back to Samsung stock today. Tried another 10 samsung based roms. Nothing new. Speed is still the same and frame drops are still there...
I guess I'll have to end up buying a new phone, but definitely not a flagship. I'm looking at midrange phones that come with AOSP. Found one with 2GB RAM, 13Mpx camera, 2500 battery, 5 inch 720P IPS screen, microSD and dual SIM for 199$. Great price, and comes with 4.4 stock Android.
Tried the phone at the store the other day and it just made my SGS3 look like the midranger, and that with a MediaTek A7 1.3 quad core!
+++
Exactly. Well, animations are smooth on AOSP with right kernel, but still not as it should be. This phone sucks when it comes to UI performance.
Now I even got broken camera and media playback, too, after stressing it with every new test on my phone.
Well, probably this phone worked the best with 4.1.2. I think it's all about crappy processor, called exynos.
EDIT: Btw,you can try archidroid 1x with his boeffla presets, though. After all,it's not that bad.
I think you are just setting unrealistic expectations if none of those ROMS, without TouchWiz, were any good for you.
There is nothing crappy about the processor mate. your case is an isolated issue. If the archi ROM is not smooth for you then there is something wrong with your phone.
it's always wise to stick to ROMs and kernels which are built using proper sources.
Do not restore a massive amount of data soon after a flash. Let the ROM settle a bit. Trim your device memory once in a while.
Also a megawipe is recommended after so many flashes.

I put Cyanogenmod CM11 on mine after updating to stock 4.3. It felt like a completely different phone and brought back the speed. It absolutely flies and battery time is double what it was on stock 4.3.
I tested alot of Roms but regading speed and batterylife i use Temasek with Yank kernel. No OC and de S3 flys.
Oh god, it's like reading a thread I could have written myself. I feel you, mate. Got the same damn frustations sometimes.
It seems that whichever ROM "camp" you choose, you're gonna have drawbacks. Tried so many different variants of TW-roms and i just feel they are all too slow and with lags.
Many of the AOSP-roms are quite fast (using ArchiDroid atm which is incredibly fast!) but then you get the problem of crappy camera, no Allshare, tethering issues, many games that have sound-issues and all those random bugs we all know about but try to live with
Perhaps the new Kitkat port can solve these issues but it seems there is a lot of work to be done still. Still I'm glad there's a community like XDA with such awesome people (Like Kryten who posted earlier ) who put the time into developing these things.. Or we would be stuck with even slower ROM's from Samsung.
Is there any way to get rid of it, or at least reduce it?
Install smart droid, further debloat, run greenify and boeffla, custom launcher and its quick, no lag
Even the s5 can't run without lag using Touchwiz.

Yes there is, activate Developer Options by tapping on the Build Number in About Phone. In there are 3 settings for animations. The 1st thing I do on every rom is decrease them to 25%. On CM11 and temaseks builds you have a slider which allows you to fine tune the settings instead of the picker which you find on other roms.
My personal experience is that OmniRom is just snappier than any of the others, even when I have a whole bunch of apps open, incoming calls get displayed almost instantly, the dialer and contacts open almost instantly. In my case of course. Everyone has their favourite rom/kernel combination. I have also had great success using Yank555's kernel with the default settings (which include a slight overclock with no noticeable battery drain.
So my temporarily solution is to completely disable the animations in developer settings.
It's a good solution, for now.
My combo right now is stock Samsung 4.3 debloated (many useless apps freezed. Other apps freezed also using Titanium Backup) with Boeffla kernel.
It gets annoying when animations aren't smooth and consistent, but I guess it's expected when Touchwiz is on top and just 1GB RAM.
Taking about RAM, this phone has almost no multitasking also! It's impossible to keep one Chrome or Internet tab open in the background while you do something else. When you go back to the Internet app it has to reload again.
And no custom rom can fix this either. I spent one week with AOSP Vanir rom and didn't had multitasking there either.
What I'm trying to say is that this phone has turned old faster than it should have, precisely because of a bad 4.3 update by Samsung and also just 1GB RAM.
And talking about speed and lag again, trust me, I've tied all the good roms available. It won't matter if you install a custom kernel. If you overclock the phone then battery will last even less than before, and it doesn't make a huge difference in speed animation and fluidity.
I'm sure AOSP roms like CM11 and others do work faster and more fluid in newest phones like G2, SGS4, HTC One, etc. It's because they have a better processor and 2GB RAM.
In the end I think it's the hardware that's to blame for the lag (and bad 4.3 update by Samsung too).
The phone is great otherwise. I love almost everything about it, like I previously said. Most times I can't believe how good the camera is, the screen is enough for me (no need for 1080P), size and weight is perfect, etc.
I would have preferred to own the US SGS3 model with it's 2GB RAM than the EU model. In the long run I think it's better.
But anyway, the lag is not huge, just annoying. And I only notice it when opening and closing apps.
Try entering development settings and change the animator duration scale to 0.5 the transition animation scale to 0.5 and the window animation scale to 0.5
It will make anything faster

You don't understand it.
It doesn't matter the scale animation (just tried with 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 again), there's still frame drops everywhere.
It doesn't make anything "faster". It's even more annoying watching the frame drops at 0.25.
It's not a solution. There is NO solution to the animation frame drops, not even on custom roms...
Only "solution" is to turn animation scale completely to 0.
I have sgs3 intl and I had a lot of lags and frame drops and I switched to CM 11 nightly and it's became faster and no frame drop and it's like new.
What Android version do you use?

Alright,my last bet will be to go on Archidroid stock based ROM,use it's own boeffla preset setting and turn animations to 1.5x. Animations will be smooth all around, only custom launcher is needed, because when opening or closing apps on touchwiz,it's still stuttery. I'm still using touchwiz launcher, though (lovely animations all around!).
I noticed 1.0x is the worst speed for animations on stock ROMs. I mean, with 1.0x,I notice some fps drops much more when opening a new windows with animations. Like it's too fast for CPU to tune right time for speed and animation and that makes it laggy. So it's all about wrong timing,as 0.5x also feels much more smoother,it's noticeable.
But the 1.5x setting compensates that. No more stuttery animations at all and it feels pretty beautiful. This was my last solution for stock touchwiz ROM,and I'm pretty happy. Try it yourself.
EDIT: Btw,if you also want to keep touchwiz, try xposed app settings, find there touchwiz launcher and tick the checkbox for "resident" option. That way it will keep the launcher in memory hardly,so when you will go back to launcher , shadows under the icons won't redraw and thus stuttery animations will be reduced and will happen much more rare.
On multitasking, try maximising your swap. Never have problems going from Chrome, email, FB etc. Also try removing apps 'receiver' settings, so they don't open on unlock, wifi connect etc..

There have been a select FEW roms that solved most of the issues you talking about, but they mostly old and the developers have moved on. The truth is, AOSP kitkat isnt optimized for our phones and you most likely wont find a stock based ROM that doesn't lag. I think the main culprit is Jellybean + Samsung together. I don't ever recall ICS having frame drops or lagging really. Samsung did a crappy job optimizing jellybean for our phone. Jellybean is hardware intensive, more than ICS and Kitkat. Seems like it was a temp solution while Google worked on KitKat and now our phone is unfortunately stuck there.
Do yourself a favor and don't get a Samsung if you want proper performance.

Where are you lagging? You could try bootng into safe mode to see if it's an app causing it, or backup and flash the stock rom and see.

not true.. the notification panel has no lag whatsoever.. and the recent apps doesn't have lag, it just has low fps. it is supposed to be that way.

major stuttering on MM?

So, i've been having some stuttering problems since the phone came. i know it's not a hardware related issue, because i can play some heavy games like nova or late game sim city (damn there's buildings ) and i just face some heatings, which i think is fine, especialy because of where i live. But for most apps (i.e. chrome, twitter, whatsapp... i didn't have it on facebook, and i don't have it on instagram, launcher, mail apps) i'm facing major stuttering, like a pc without proper gpu drivers. it just drags and cuts the screen around, it's so annoying. Is anyone facing a problem like this? workarounds?
yes i have this problem too(bad scrolling (some lag) ) , i hate when i scroll my Instagram feeds , anyone have a solution ?

i don't experience lag neither, the overall experience is smooth, apps run faster than my finger can click, the phone is truly responsive. i'm talking about scrolling smoothness, reading through a page on chrome, scrolling instagram... those things are really sluggish.
Snapchat, gaming, typing, tweeting... everything else that doesn't require scrolling is smooth af.

What kind of problems? i'm thinking of a rom to avoid moto update bloat with those pesky wakelocks, but i can't find a rom that works on my br xt1572.
I didn't believe it at first, but I am too getting stuttery scrolling when using Chrome on stock ROM with stock kernel. I frequent a few sites a lot, and noticed it right away on them, even when cleared of ads. A supposed fix is to disable some apps' services turned on under Settings > Accessibility, but that fix is no good for me since I don't have anything set to on under there.
I would love to go back to Frankenclark, but we have to wait for Moto to push the update to GitHub.
There is definitely something wrong with stock MM & web browsing & I've noticed stuttering in animations all throughout the MM OS. I didn't experience any scrolling lag or OS stuttering when I tested Orion rom, I only experience this annoying problem when I'm using a stock rom or a stock-based rom regardless of kernel whether it be stock or otherwise.
Spastic, strangely I had a greenify thing under accessibility, unchecked that and (some of the) smoothness is now back... I mean, it's still stuttering, but way better than before. I need a cientific explaining about that lol.
Now I gotta found the next option to uncheck, so I can unlock full smoothness
Moto voice seems to cause a lot of these issues on mm
I've been complaining about the stutters and lag since MM was released and everyone said I was crazy! Even with a custom kernel you cannot completely rid the device of the stutters, but you can reduce them slightly. Stock Lollipop with the custom kernel that is available for LP was super smooth for me. All of the custom ROMs have the same stutters accept OrionOS. But it's severely lacking in features ATM.
---------- Post added at 11:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:55 AM ----------
My suggestion is return to LP stock with that custom kernel, and be happy with it. The theme was the only thing I hated on LP, and MM could use layers to change the theme which was cool. But MM is just too laggy.

Ikr, every post I've seen you in, you were complaining about it, but I didn't had lag at first, so I think is some app or function that is causing this stutter. Everything is super smooth at first...
Yeah, I wiped and went to LP then took the update to MM, and didn't install anything, and it seemed better. I installed just Pandora, and it streamed fine. So one of my apps, or app data must be breaking my ability to stream music on stock MM. Maybe Gravity box.

idk about you, but when i installer xposed, i faced major lag, sutter, 3~4 seconds to open apps, random fcs... i uninstalled gravity box and most of these issues were solved, but the lag was only solved after i completely removed xposed framework. Strangely, this has already happened to me with a Sony xperia X8, Galaxy nexus (maguro), and motorola defy. i'm never lucky with xposed. But with the nexus, most of the issues were solved by removing gravity box. i know a whole lot of people like too much gravity box and see it as a must have, but it has been the source of many issues i had in the past, since i've never make it work properly, i don't miss the customization.
Not saying GB is the root problem for your streaming issue, but i would avoid it.

I'm not, I'm on custom ROMs now that they have working camera and flashlight and pentiful ROM options. But I would be interested in running MM with my full set up, and no Xposed to see if it works fine. Just sucks, because with LP I could use gravity box and it was still smooth.
